Try blowing the dust out of the heatsink with a can of compressed air, but anyway, to answer your question...

I did this once with a compressed air line ... cleaned it REALLY well, until it shattered.. oops. I'm more careful now Cheesy

A free item if the seller is short-minded and sends the item before the cash is on his bank?

Or, the scammers favorite, the chargeback or paypal dispute

Okay, so 'BFL-Josh' says 'There was a flaw in the chip that needed to be addressed' .. and now there isn't? Get on the same page, people.
To someone like me, there's a very small difference between "Engineering oversight" and "Design flaw".

Yea.. and as someone else said, they really need to be careful about what they say. BFL people may moan that everyone is deriding them but then they bring stuff on themselves with half-assed 'press releases' that seem to only serve to stir up worry and/or confusion.

Hi Everyone,

We've been very busy recently, unfortunately I couldn't catch up with the forums. There is a correction to be made: Chips are not and were not flawed. We decided to add certain clock buffers to improve noise-resistance and possibly increase frequency even further. The improve in noise resistance was our real goal (average frequency increase across a full wafer can be a bi-product). The decision was made to increase the near 100% chance of success even more. We'll keep you posted. If you had any questions, please let us know.

Regards,
Nasser

48  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL to not match competitors products not shipped on: November 25, 2012, 04:58:18 AM

It's not uncommon for a product (of nearly any type) to run well below peak performance for extended lifespan ...

But this is the race for GHash my friend. I doubt that anyone (BFL, Tom, Avalon, ...) care that much about things like lifespan ...

If BFL is offering a lifetime warranty on their units (I believe they are?) then they would be foolish to jeopardize the longevity of their hardware by clocking it too hard, since they would foot the bill. Add to that I'd rather have something that runs cooler and for longer than a unit that is producing 0GH/s as it's being shipped back to the manufacturer for repair/replacement.

Looking forward to testing stratum to Bitminter for a while to make sure things run well then that will be one less thing to worry about with ASICs arriving (whenever they do).

I do hope the luck gets better though. it's been kinda painful over the last week.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving ( that celebrate it ) Smiley
50  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Tax Man on: November 18, 2012, 07:31:07 AM
Maybe you should read this. Looks to me to be a big can of worm for IRS at present though.

From the article: "The lack of response by governments at the moment could be due in part to the relatively small bitcoin market, which hasn't reached a critical mass yet. However, all that could change once the number of coins derived by mining drops by half in November, which, in Elias's opinion, could create a huge spike in value, perhaps reaching as high as $1,000 per bitcoin. "

That would be frickin awesome Smiley .. Goodbye mortgage .. lol.
51  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 21 Millions... on: November 14, 2012, 03:29:10 AM
Bitcoin will always go up over time. That is not to say that in the short term it wont go down for a while, but overall, as bitcoin becomes more popular, the price per bit coin will go up.

You can think of it like gold as most people have and do. Other currencies will devalue and more people will want that gold or bitcoin and the price overall will go up.

There is no way to speculate as to how much it will be worth once all 21m coins are in circulation though. There are just too many factors involved. But it's safe to say that it will always go up in the long run.

Such is the way with a deflationary currency  Grin
52  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER GPU FPGA overc monit fanspd RPC stratum linux/windows/osx/mip/r-pi 2.9.3 on: November 14, 2012, 03:09:29 AM
It's not a mistake. Previously cgminer did not check the backup pools were working. Now it does check them even if not mining on them.
I know that, but Mt. Red couldn't possibly be going down as often as cgminer is saying. Also, I'm pretty sure us1.ozco.in is currently running just fine.

Mt Red has horrible, horrible 'uptime'. I gave up mining with them since they seemed to be inaccessible lots of times at different times of the day, sometimes for hours.

Does BitMinter support the stratum protocol yet? Sorry if that's been answered in the 100+ pages before this one  Embarrassed

PS: bitcointalk's search function is horrible.
54  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BitcoinCard - Are you buying one? on: November 12, 2012, 04:08:03 AM
I watched the entire video and it never mentioned bitcoin once.

Other than that, there are some problems (which I suppose can be overcome):
1. The video said that in order to be connected to the network, you need there to be a few people on every block with one of these cards. How long will it take for the card to become that popular?
2. I don't want to be tracked.
3. I don't want to be bombarded with ads.

Yea, it's a marketeers wet dream (time spent at a store shelf? wtf?) I'm sure many large corporations would love to tag us and identify us when we walk down the street or into a store (Seen Minority Report ?)

I don't see anything I really want to have over the Android phone I've already been using for nearly 2 years.
55  Other / Off-topic / Re: TOWN HALL (prep) Meeting: Butterfly Labs on: November 12, 2012, 03:10:28 AM
Expanding on camosoul's essay and just a main point we should all just deal with:

It's a personal choice if you want to pre-order from BFL, then it's a choice if you'd like to cancel your pre-order or demand a refund if you feel they are taking too long.

Everything's voluntary. Just wait for new information to come out, it makes no sense arguing at this point; everything's been argued already.

Yea, so much BFL hate but noone is forcing you do business with anyone.  Huh
56  Bitcoin / Hardware / ASICs to use USB 3.0 or 2.0 for communications? on: November 10, 2012, 10:49:42 PM
Hi, I am getting a small computer ready for handling a few ASIC devices (just a few BFL Single SCs and a bASIC). I am wondering if they will use USB 3.0 or 2.0 for communication. Does anyone know? I am wondering about just building something that supports USB 3.0 anyway just in case but I was curious if anyone knew for sure.

58  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I just preordered ASIC chip, now what? on: November 10, 2012, 05:12:53 AM
Once/if they come out, will the current software have to be modified in order to use it?  Do they have software they are using already to test this stuff?  I'd like to see a youtube video at least with actual performance results.

It would be nice if ASIC providers were even releasing protocol specs for communications. I know Con Kolivas (cgminer) was complaining that they haven't yet. That to me is troubling.

I don't want all the new hardware to turn up (when it does) and not be able to use it.

Is there a UI upgrade in the future plan?

Hello deadweasel yes there is Smiley.
Finding a web designer with the talent and the time to spare that matches our budget has proven hard, but we are still looking Smiley

Curious to know if you've found someone since I do webdesign and graphics and have done for more than 10 years.
