Glad you got it back. I recommend staking your Bitcoin address in this thread to make proving identity easier in future:

407  Economy / Collectibles / Re: how to sell loaded physical casacius 1btc? on: December 30, 2020, 04:51:28 AM
I don't know of any exchange that would allow you to buy/sell these physical collectibles. You can however redeem the private key, deposit the BTC to an exchange like Coinbase/Gemini/Kraken, and sell it there. I would suggest against doing that though because you will get more bang for your buck if you sell it as a collectors item. Don't peel the hologram though if you do plan to sell it as a collectors item. Cheesy

Perhaps you could post a sales / auction thread here with a price you have in mind and go from there.
408  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Missing funds on Electrum, unauthorised transaction on: December 29, 2020, 11:29:54 PM
Thanks.

History shows I visited electrum.org.in   so Beware!!!!!!

I ran some antivirus software and deleted Electrum.   Is there anything else I should do, or anything else that can be done?

Thanks

It's safe to assume your BTC is gone. I hope it wasn't a big amount. Your machine is also likely infected.

I would recommend:
  • Marking your seed as unsafe (but don't actually discard it, in case you need to reference it in future).
  • Format your hard drive and do a fresh installation of your OS.
  • Change passwords on your email addresses and any other accounts you logged into on that machine. Enable 2FA whenever you can.
  • Start fresh. Don't re-use any of the old seeds or private keys. Don't re-use any passwords.

Most importantly, pay close attention to whatever you're downloading and where that download is coming from.

If you hold any BTC (or any other crypto currency) in any other wallets that you accessed on this machine, they could also likely be compromised. I would transfer them to a secure wallet ASAP.

One lesson to be learned here is to always verify the GPG signature of the tool you are going to install or run. If it doesn't match, don't open the file. Electrum's official download page links you to resources on how you can verify the signature: https://electrum.org/#download

410  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: BLOCKCHAIN.COM STOLE MY BTC: OFFERING REWARD on: December 29, 2020, 07:23:26 PM
Ok.

Another idea....

So I now have 2 Wallet IDs and ONE PASSPHRASE... right?

Ok.  So when I attempted  to "recover" my wallet via Blockchain.com I used my one and only 12 word PASSPHRASE... and it gave me a warning that a new wallet would be created.... oof.

Whence recovering my wallet it gave me access to a what looked like a new wallet and a ZERO balance....

So when I then go to access my OTHER WALLET ID from the one they sent me via my phone number back in 2013 it asks me to put in my password and then tells me to verifiy via email.... in which i NEVER receive an email.....

So... I've deduced that I have only ONE EMAIL, ONE PASSWORD, ONE PHONE NUMBER, ONE PASSPHRASE, and NO 2FA.......

Is it possible that when I "recovered" my wallet with my passphrase that it created a new wallet with that ZERO balance.  And I'm just not receiving verified emails from the WALLET ID that I have from my phone back in 2013 and it's not ACTUALLY RECOVERING MY COINS FROM MY OLD WALLET??

I've contacted customer service..... and it's a joke.

So any thoughts to this??

So help me understand this. You have the wallet id and password that worked for blockchain.info and the same credentials don't for blockchain.com. And you also have access to the email address associated with your Blockchain account?

This is where I would start:
Can you go to your email and search if you received any email having the title "Wallet Backup" sent from "no-reply@blockchain.info". That should have your wallet backup. Using that backup, you should be able to recover your BTC.

What happens when you use your old wallet id and password on blockchain.com? Does it not log in?
411  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Carolina Panthers - Russell O Kung Receives half his salary in Bitcoin on: December 29, 2020, 07:08:02 PM
From one of the articles I was reading:
Quote
Technically speaking, Okung is still being paid in fiat. Behind the scenes, however, is Lightning Network magic: Strike receives a direct deposit from his team, the Carolina Panthers, and then swaps dollars for bitcoin. That bitcoin is then sent to a cold storage wallet held by Okung, Mallers said. (To recap, Lightning is a secondary system for sending bitcoin in a cheaper and quicker fashion compared to using the Bitcoin network itself.)

So Panthers are sending half of Okung's paycheck to Strike, they swap it to BTC and then that BTC is transferred to Okung's cold storage address. Interesting. I wish this was more widespread. I for one would love to opt in to something similar if my workplace offered such an option.

415  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are people buying BTC @ $27000+ idiots? on: December 29, 2020, 06:06:21 AM
DCA my friend. Buy a certain amount at regular intervals. BTC is at $4000 USD? Buy. It's at $27,000 USD? Still buy. And as is the rule, don't invest more than you can afford to lose.

If you believe Bitcoin will have a much higher price in long term then no price is a bad price. I would perhaps re-consider my stance once BTC crosses $100,000 USD. Right now, at $27,000 USD, I don't think anyone is an idiot for buying. I personally am buying as much as I can every month.

Doing a systematic investment plan (SIP) is a good way to do investment in cryptocurrency. But along with the SIP, you need to have a systematic plan to book the profits, after a certain amount of time. Profit booking is also quite important, when you deal with a volatile asset such as Bitcoin. Having a well defined plan will protect you from panic selling and market volatility.

I think that's a sound advice, I have seen a fair few people get burned because they buy at a high price and then panic sell at a loss when the price falls. These are the big mistakes I see that many novice investors make: 1) Buying into the hype without understanding the technology or previous market patterns 2) Putting money they shouldn't be putting into BTC (like emergency savings) 3) Investing more than they can afford to lose

There are many of us who invest wisely and don't need to book the profits yet though. If there is another bear market we can push through for several more years before having to book any profits.

417  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Defi Change the People Prospective? on: December 29, 2020, 05:16:37 AM
The DeFi space in its current state is an abomination. There is too much "rug pulling" going on in the space to take it seriously. Gives me flashbacks of the 2017 ICO craze and it's not going to end well. I don't think any of the current DeFi projects are viable long term investments.

Anyway, I have sent "cmr" a message. Hopefully the message triggers an email alert.

I happened to find the private key to these coins, and Google led me to this thread.

I am unable to PM you, as the forum says you are not accepting PMs from Newbies.

Send me a message if you're still around, and we can work out a transfer to a new wallet.

Good on you if you really mean to do this. I see the original poster "cmr" hasn't logged in since late 2017. Sad Not sure if they is any other way to reach out to them. I think your best bet would be to hold onto these coins and hope they log back in some day. Or reach out to theymos / someone from moderation team and see if they can contact "cmr" on the email address on file.

I am sure this would be a life changing moment for the OP if you are able to return the coins.
420  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why 24 words? on: December 28, 2020, 11:00:43 PM
12 words are secure enough on their own. But keep in mind, 24 words provide 256 bit entropy (vs 128 bit entropy that 12 words provide). I imagine that plays a role in 24 words being more preferred, because greater entropy is always better right? But like you mentioned that comes with greater inconvenience.

I wonder if there's a reason behind that other than just 256 > 128 because 128 bit entropy is very secure on its own. IIRC Bitcoin's 256 bit ECDSA signatures also have 128 bit entropy.

One scenario I imagine is if you split your seed into three to store as 2 of 3 factors of authentication, in case of 24 words, attacker would have to crack more words if they get their hands on one copy versus if you were using 12 words.

But then again. If you use a passphrase to secure your seed, then 12 words should be more than enough even taking my above point into consideration.

I myself use 24 words because I am simply not knowledgeable enough in cryptography and don't wanna leave anything up for any potential future risks. I am all for greater security even if it comes with a slight inconvenience.
