Researchers with Beijing Normal University this year found “several cases of possible technological traces and extraterrestrial civilizations from outside the earth,” according to a report published Tuesday in Science and Technology Daily, the official newspaper of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The original report, however, appears to have since been deleted from the Science and Technology Daily website, according to Bloomberg.

Bitcoin is useless and will never serve as a store of value or even as a payment system at a large scale. Not one regular person I speak with cares about it. Institutions have it by its balls now. Wouldn’t surprise me to see $18k within the next couple weeks or sooner. Long term we are heading to 10k and below.

[discussion of moderation and merit]
The merit system was supposed to be natural: You see a post that looks to you like a substantive contribution to community discussion. You hit the merit button. Accounts that make good posts rise in rank. Nice theory! It rapidly devolved so that you need to hire a private investigator to do a background check on an unrecognized account before sending it merit. Well, I exaggerate—but not by much. That’s sad, but it is inevitable. The bounties subforums are, in essence, dedicated spam support sections for spamming other websites. (Though I doubt those social media sites much mind; some of them are corrupt as hell.) They are a magnet for abuse. Add the general problem of paid signatures, and you have a recipe for problems that cannot be fixed with any kind of rank or merit system. You, Jay, contribute hours of your own time and effort to writing substantive posts that help people. You don’t even wear a paid signature to get some compensation for your time, as would be damn well justified in your case. Don’t feel bad that you sent some merits to Blue King. You were acting in good faith. The problem would be solved by deleting the bounties subforums, and banning paid signatures. That will not happen here, so it is anyway otiose to worry about the few merits you inadvertently sent to a spammer. Don’t batslap yourself. Some high-merit WO regulars (not Jay) habitually send large amounts of knee-jerk applause merit to groupthink preaching-to-the-choir posts saying things that hatters want to hear. That should change, it’s not going to change, and I will not waste my time quibbling over it. Merit giving is discretionary. Stop whining, you have your own discretion

8.1% from the perspective of some other countries seems quite harmless, so I wouldn’t get too upset about it. SourceYeah but inflation is really about 25% in the UK according to my real life calculations

No world policeman can stop freedom-loving nations – Putin
The Russian leader made the remarks during a plenary session of the Eurasian Economic Forum
Western nations that are trying to punish others with economic sanctions are overestimating their strength, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the Eurasian Economic Forum on Thursday.
“More and more countries in the world want and will pursue independent policy,” he said at the international event. “No ‘world policeman’ can halt this natural global process. No one is that strong.”
“They face challenges inside their nations, and I hope they realize that this policy has absolutely no prospects,” the Russian leader said, referring to the US and its Western allies.
