401  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Can i place a S7 miner in a normal fridge or freezer to cool it down in silence on: June 23, 2016, 06:08:33 AM
As it turns out, a refrigerator isn't designed to actually cool things off, for the most part. It is designed to KEEP things cool. That's why there is such a focus on the insulation to minimize the heat that penetrates inside the box, That's also why the old advice about minimizing opening and closing exists.  A refrigerator is NOT designed to REMOVE heat from an active source inside itself (i.e. a miner).
402  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: June 22, 2016, 11:52:35 PM
Holy balls, you're right. Coin's down like $80 (a solid 12%) from looking at it last night. What's up?

If you can live your life entirely within the "Bitcoin Bubble", this is of no importance. For the other 99.9% folks that have to deal with actual fiat money, then I have but one word that you should never forget related to Bitcoin:

VOLATILE
403  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Community Miner Design Discussion on: June 22, 2016, 07:52:52 PM
Actually I should probably delete my previous comment. It's really not in keeping with the point of this thread and forum. I would say that goes as well for some of the previous comments (IMHO).

I am not generally one to pretend to be a "Forum Moderator" type guy, this discussion seems to be very close to leaving the rails, if it hasn't already done so.

Just a thought.
404  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Community Miner Design Discussion on: June 22, 2016, 07:46:52 PM
Assuming you want to make a "non-currency blockchain" it would seems that several of the existing Bitcoin mechanisms don't make much sense or have a lot of utility. For example:

1) Would there be a block reward? For what purpose?

2) Is there reason to have a difficulty adjustment mechanism?

3) Would the "Transaction Processing" (aka mining) essentially become a public or "free" service?

4) It wouldn't seem that there needs to be a massive mining infrastructure as has developed around BTC. A handful of distribute machines would do it, wouldn't it?

405  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread june 20 to july 4 -picks are yet to open!.... prize = $50 usd on: June 22, 2016, 01:38:24 AM
While it's way too early to make a pick, I am expecting another increase in difficulty, and don't mean just 1%. Isay this because BTC is price is higher than most of the current year. Yes it's lower than a week ago, it's still much higher than it was for the first 4 months of the year. That will delay the exit of some less efficient mining hardware until after the halving. You can also be sure that all the S9's, and even S7's that Bitmain ships will get deployed.

To me that all adds up to another noticeable jump in hashrate and hence difficulty. In my opinion, the only thing that would limit the increase is a substantial "collapse" of BTC price, say $400 or less.

While BTC is above $600, I think the plan will be "Mine while the mining is good".
406  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: June 21, 2016, 09:22:47 PM
I just checked my two s-9's coming on weds well they are now coming on thurs and both have a line I have never seen.
I bolded the line below.

Shenzhen, China   06/22/2016   1:00 A.M.   Export Scan
Shenzhen, China   06/21/2016   10:15 P.M.
Your package is in transit. We're updating plans to schedule your delivery. / The package will be forwarded to a UPS facility in the destination city.

Lakewood, NJ, United States   06/21/2016   7:08 A.M.   The receiver must pay the duties or taxes due on the package.

.....

I wonder if maybe this happened because you have two S9's as a single shipment, and the total value exceeded some threshold. In the past haven't you had "single miner shipments"? Perhaps in the future it might be worth considering staggered orders which become staggered shipments?
407  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread june 20 to july 4 -picks are yet to open!.... prize = $50 usd on: June 21, 2016, 09:04:22 PM
Thanks for keeping it going, Phil.  Last one before the halving?  Let's do it!

I'll 2nd his comments.

As I do the math, the CURRENT adjustment period will have all 25BTC blocks, and will complete before the halving. The NEXT adjustment period will have the halving contained within it (and have a mix of 25 and 12.5 BTC blocks).
408  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread june 20 to july 4 -picks are closed!!.... prize = $50 usd on: June 21, 2016, 06:10:37 PM
A minor suggestions for Phil:

Maybe the title should say "not yet open" rather than "closed" prior to block 1116. It might be a little more descriptive. Obviously "open" when we pass 1116 remaining and then "closed" when we are down to 716 remaining.

Just a thought.
409  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread june 7 to june 20 -picks are closed!!.... prize = 0.20 btc on: June 21, 2016, 06:00:19 AM
Looks to me like it's Kexkey

Jun 21 2016    209,453,158,595    6.83%    1,499,324,110 GH/s

Obviously Phil is is the final judge.

Unfortunately, it looks like BTC price has tumbled a bit, down to about $700. Sad

While I don't know how to capture the fragment of the bitcoinwisdom graph, it kinda looks like maybe the "spike" is over for a bit. The Grey line looks like it has peaked. In a non-graphical form:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    196,061,423,940
Estimated Next Difficulty:    209,476,355,740 (+6.84%)
Adjust time:    After 50 Blocks, About 7.7 hours
Hashrate(?):    1,601,862,310 GH/s
Block Generation Time(?):
1 block: 9.2 minutes
3 blocks: 27.8 minutes
6 blocks: 55.5 minutes

411  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Anybody has the 14nm-miner in hand? on: June 20, 2016, 08:54:00 PM
Hi all,
has anybody the 14nm-miner from Lketc in hand and can report how they are doing?

To the extent it's useful, there was guy that reported, with a picture, that he had some LKtex 14nm parts. This was in thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1487358.0

Take that for what it's worth in terms of actual availability, and actual progress on a miner that's using those chips. Right now, Bitmain is the dominant player in the 14/16 nm space for actual miners that run, and are for sale to normal humans. Their pricing seems reflect that situation (IMHO).
412  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: is there any Antminer S9 group buy shares on: June 20, 2016, 04:30:00 PM
what you rekin? wait for a price on 1200 +/-?

While everyone is expecting a decrease in the price of mining hardware following the "halving", that's not absolutely guaranteed, nor is it's timing. The price of an S9 will only fall to the extent that demand declines at the price that Bitmain states for a particular batch. If for example, Bitmain were to put up a "Batch 4 $1800 S9 miner shipping on July 8th" (my purely hypothetical example), if they sell out that batch at $1800, don't look for a big decrease in Batch 5 pricing. If you want to wait for $1200, there's no way to accurately predict when an S9 might be priced that way, either in Batch number or date.

Maybe I'll be wrong on this, but Bitmain crafts their prices very carefully and you should NOT look for any stellar pricing "deals" unless they have competition, or demand for their hardware declines.
413  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: what will i need to make an asic antminer s7? on: June 20, 2016, 04:18:43 PM
From looking at the images and description on the product listing, there are a few hashing boards (3) and a control board (apparently a composite board in its own right), and the mining boards are connected with 18-pin ribbon cables. Each mining board contains supporting electronics and a bunch of BM1385 ICs that do the actual hashing.

My personal interpretation, which might be wrong, is: "What additional items do I need to install and properly use an S7?".

I assumed it was more a non-English speaker, than a literal interpretation of the words as stated.
414  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: what will i need to make an asic antminer s7? on: June 20, 2016, 04:15:07 PM
i just want t know the components.
like the power supply.

In addition to the S7, you will need a Power supply with 10 PCIe power connectors. You can order an appropriate power supply from Bitmain, if to have 208VAC (or higher) power in your country. You'll also need an INTERNET connection and associated Ethernet cables.

Do you have any experience with a miner previously?
415  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: can you profit from S7 with 1kw power miner = 0.2 USD ??? on: June 18, 2016, 10:08:58 PM
While it should be possible to turn a small operating profit (i.e. income is greater that expense to run), for about 3 weeks starting today, that likely won't last after July 10th with $.20/KWh electrical cost. Unless the S7 is free, you probably will never pay ff the cost of it. The reason for the July 10th date, is that is when the current 25BTC reward per block will be reduced to 12.5 BTC (aka "the halving"). This also assumes that the current $750 BTC price remains intact.

Your $.20 electricity cost is about 3x too high to have a long term mining future.
416  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Hacking the S7 - improving efficiency through minor hardware manipulation on: June 17, 2016, 06:31:01 PM
Say, possibly dumb question. Where's the kernel log on these?

On most Linux based systems, /var/log/messages is it. That would have Kernel and possibly other messages. I expect cgminer to place it's logs elsewhere, though I don't really know.
417  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs [UNMOD] on: June 17, 2016, 04:22:44 PM
Interesting press release out of BTCS:

Quote
ARLINGTON, VA--(Marketwired - May 25, 2016) - BTCS Inc. (OTCQB: BTCS) ("BTCS" or the "Company"), a blockchain technology focused company which secures the blockchain through its transaction verification services business, increased its Ethereum-mining hosting business to approximately 150 kilowatts ("kw"), up from approximately 50kw announced in March 2016.

"We have gained valuable expertise since launching our Ethereum pilot program in March," stated Charles Allen, CEO of BTCS. "Ethereum has rocketed to nearly 20% of the market cap of Bitcoin in less than two years, led by rapid adoption and growing support from major players in tech and finance including Gemini and Coinbase (which just rebranded to GDAX). We believe our experience, in connection with additional capital, should allow us to further expand our Ethereum mining and hosting businesses, to diversify our exposure to bitcoin, and to use more of our available power capacity."

There goes the neighborhood ...

I just noticed that BTCS is trading for $.022/share. I personally don't think Etherum will save them.
418  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: June 17, 2016, 04:20:21 PM
For those that are interested, it appears that BTCS is now at $.022/share. I have watched this because I was foolish enough to purchase some BTCS last year. I had forgot the phrase "due diligence"....  Cry
419  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread june 7 to june 20 -picks are open!!.... prize = 0.20 btc on: June 16, 2016, 08:42:11 AM
Not a lot of choices left at this late hour.

+6.1 = alh

I hope it isn't that high, but with S9's being deployed, the hash rate won't decline. My best is that somebody more in the 4-5 range is most likely. In any event, thanks to Phill for continuing this!
420  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Post-mortem interview with KnC Miner founder Sam Cole on: June 15, 2016, 07:42:16 PM
Don't be looking for any apologies, or too much history. It's primarily about investors (not customers), and how KNC saw their future unfolding. No technical details, even the details of BTC that folks might be aware of (e.g. Difficulty adjust, Halving), were largely glossed over or cast in a different light.

While I was never a purchaser of KNC hardware, it does leave a foul taste regarding their pivot from "selling miners to customer" to "self mining with investors". This video is unlikely to change anybodies mind regarding KNC (IMHO).
