401  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 15, 2013, 11:35:26 PM
I wish you all luck, my 4 module miner I purchased in october is probably going to pay itself off by beginning of January worst case feb-mar, and should mine a good chunk of dust for a while afterwards. As soon as I got my unit, I put in a 1200w power supply that I already owned, updated the firmware, set --avalon-auto and it has not stopped since. No errors, no problems.

I have my unit "open" with a fan blowing in from the side. Keeps the unit around 40-44 deg. Getting between 110-116gh/s stable, relentless. Very dust free, cool environment.

Maybe their current systems are more stable? Better equipment?

I was even running at 375mhz but noticed I was getting better rates set to auto. Too many hardware errors at 375mhz. It hovers between 345-355 in auto mode.

I've looked around inside, nothing smells, no burns, no weird glue problems. The case seems bloody bullet proof.

Again, good luck.

I'm sure some of us got lucky and ended up with Avalon's that are worth a shit but I'm not real pleased with the 4 I got. 3 out of the 4 of them have issues, one so serious that I cant use it now. Pretty piss poor quality but at least they shipped when they said they would.

So far the restarting cgminer and rebooting the avalons seem to be helping quite a bit. I rolled into 2 coins yesterday and am almost at .7 on my next coin in about 24 hours. Not bad all things considered.
402  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 15, 2013, 05:06:27 PM
I'll tell you that I got really tired fucking around with my 105gh (32 module)unit crapping out no matter what firmware or script fix. Bought an electronic timer and it shuts the fucking thing down every 2 hours for 1 min. This has been the most reliable solution. Not perfect as I catch it down 1-2 per week in between the 2 hour interval but much better than being down for longer periods. Power-cycling  might be wearing out my Avalon but I need it to mine now not in 12 months from now so to hell with it.

Honestly even though BFL is a shit company my other 3 miner units have been rock solid compared to my avalon unit.

I'm with ya on the timer idea. I've got some Z-Wave parts that I can remote into and kill outlets and what not at work from anywhere I have cell service. I'll probably go with that if the built in timers dont work.
403  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 15, 2013, 04:33:40 PM
So it would seem that connecting the Avalon to a WinPC is not as easy as I had hoped. I really wanted to get this HASHED out  Grin before I go out of town on Sunday.

Hmm...

Zadig fails to install any driver (I figured I'd try the WinUSB driver first).

Ideas?
404  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 15, 2013, 03:13:00 PM
If you have 1 of 4 Avalons working incorrectly, you could try exchanging the tp-link board. But I can imagine you want to hash and not fiddle with the correctly working one.

I compared your cgminer log with mine (Avalon batch2), the only difference I see is

 [USB Pipe] => 1 0/5/0 1384515510 (yours)
 [USB Pipe] => 0 (mine)

Have a look at the other 3 Avalons to see what you have there.
Second suggestion is to remove --quiet (I don't have that in my more options field) I do have a limitation of the frequency: --avalon-freq 325-375 and the machine is doing 350Mhz +/- 3Mhz.

Heres what I have.

4 Avalon 60GHs unit (2 modules each). One of them gave me grief out of the box so I disconnected its miners from the controller board and plugged them into another Avalon, so I basically have 2 2 module units and 1 4 module unit. The newly created 4 module and 1 of the 2 module units are the ones that give me all the hard times. The final 2 module Avalon has been working great since day one.

I'll remove --quiet from my config file and see if that helps. I'm also still going to try to interface one of these things with a PC running the latest version of cgminer just to see if I can get some sort of stability out of them. So far my PC miners are all working fine. Its these stand alone Avalons that are sucking the life out of me.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions all.
405  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 15, 2013, 12:10:00 PM
If the restart cgminer and reboot the Avalon methods work and keep this stupid thing hashing then I guess I'm OK with that. My last ditch effort would probably be to connect these Avalons to a PC running the latest cgminer and call it a day. Thats of course taking into assumption that the miner boards and FPGA controller boards are not my problem. I think its the suck ass TP-Link boards myself because one of the 4 Avalons that I bought wouldn't connect and mine out of the gate.
406  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 15, 2013, 12:03:46 PM
So it hasn't been an hour since my last post (and last power cycle of my 4 module avalon) and here I am with the 120ghs avalon mining away at 5ghs. WTF is wrong with these things?

I'd be better off with 400 Block Eruptors.
Make a screenshot of your Cgminer Configuration page, Cgminer Status page and copy/paste the contents of Cgminer API Log page. We need more information  to help you.

Thanks for the offer to help Ben. FWIW, I have also tried to set the clock speed to the slowest setting and this thing still craps out.

I entered the restart cgminer and reboot the Avalon methods mentioned above in this thread into the Avalon that keeps crashing so the API log probably isnt going to show you anything since it was up and running when I got up this morning. Here it is anyway.

So it hasn't been an hour since my last post (and last power cycle of my 4 module avalon) and here I am with the 120ghs avalon mining away at 5ghs. WTF is wrong with these things?

I'd be better off with 400 Block Eruptors.
408  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 15, 2013, 04:21:38 AM
Is there an easy way to schedule auto restarts on these things? Be it restarting cgminer or rebooting the Avalon I dont really care. One of them was hasing away at 3ghs (yes, 3GHS) this morning. Another quit at 3AM. I reset both of them when I woke up and one of them later decided to hash at 8ghs.

These things are currently exposed to outside Dallas temps (high 50's mid 60's today) and get down to the upper 30's at night. I doubt its an ambient temp thing. The highest temp within the web interface is around 47c.

Thanks for the help guys!

The more I play with these things the clearer it is to me that they are junk. I've got two Avalons that I have to manually restart cgminer on about every 4 hours otherwise their hash rates drop to under 100 mhs. As soon as I restart cgminer they go back to their advertised speeds. Also while they are running slow the web interface is SUPER choppy.

Is there a way to force cgminer to restart itself every 6 hours or so?

Oh, all hardwired not wi-fi.

I guess I'm not totally surprised that they are shit.

you can give this a try:

1. log in to your miner via it's IP address.

2. go to the 'system' tab.

3. click in to the 'scheduled tasks' tab.

4. under the existing commands paste these commands in.

0  */4 *   *   *     /etc/init.d/cgminer restart

0  20  *   *   *     /sbin/reboot

5. what this does: have the device restart CGminer every 4 hrs (change the '4' value according to the frequency you desire) & have the device do a full reboot every 20 hrs (change the '20' value according to the frequency you desire).

please let me if this has helped you - this has fixed a lot of my issues with my minis (i have 6).

You already asked the same question and it was already answered.

I must have missed the question being answered. Thanks for reposting it.

In your pictures...

Provide connectors 1 and 2 with 8 pin PCIe power. Connectors 3 and 4 are 8 pin (or 2x4 pin) CPU power. They are pinned and keyed differently so you can plug them in the wrong sockets by mistake.

I only have 1 8 pin CPU connector and 1 4 pin CPU connector. So, can I use a 4 to 8 pin adapter to make it work? Or I can just use the 4 pins and it's fine.

The point is to get the most amount of current that you can on that board for the mining modules. It will probably work but isnt the best case scenario. Try it, give it a few hours and then see if your adapter is getting warm. If it is then its not going to work. If it isnt your probably OK.
411  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 13, 2013, 11:42:15 PM
I'm utterly baffled here...

This is the EXACT problem I was having with one of my Avalons. Initially I was able to make it mine by changing its IP protocol from static to DHCP (so that it would get an address from my router). Dont know why that worked but it did for a few days then stopped working. I've since disconnected the two hashing modules from the controller and plugged them into another avalon thats wasnt giving me any crap.

The three that I have left working now still give me random grief though. They will either stop hashing or slow to a snails pace. All I have to do is restart cgminer and all is well though.

These things are a PITA.

sounds like this is your problem. put dns as your router ip. or try 8.8.8.8as dns on a compuer and see how well it connects to websites. (pinging ips will work)

Tried that. doesnt seem to change how these things behave. FWIW, the computer works fine with the routers IP as the DNS and with 8.8.8.8 as the DNS.
414  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 13, 2013, 08:55:28 PM
Why don't you restart them via crontab ?

You'll have to forgive me, I dont know what crontab is but I will look it up. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yup, thats them.
418  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 13, 2013, 02:17:45 AM
Why is my miner losing connection? I have only had it a couple of days and haven't tampered with the hardware. Sometimes when I come home after college my miner has stopped mining and the orange light is on, so it is losing connection, yet my internet has been on the whole time. Can anybody help? Thanks.
~AvalonMiner
p.s. My miner is an AvalonMini 60Gh.

you connecting via wifi or physical ethernet cable?
ethernet cable is always much more stable than wifi.
So I could just unscrew and remove the external WiFi Ariel and plug it directly into my router with an Ethernet? Would that require me to change any settings?

You would need to change the Avalon's ethernet port IP address to something similar to your computers. For insance, if your desktop/laptop is something like 192.168.1.100 change the Avalon to 192.168.1.(pick a number between 10 and 254). Keep in mind that there might be something on your network with the number you might choose so pick something odd like 177...

Remove the antenna, plug in an ethernet cable and you should be good to go.
419  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 12, 2013, 11:34:06 PM
dns?

All four of my miners are using 8.8.8.8 as the DNS entry. Only one of them would not connect and mine about 90% of the time.

I've decided to NOT use that bad miners controller and just plugged the two modules into another Avalon.
420  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 12, 2013, 11:16:10 PM
which screws are you referring to specifically?
can you show via a photo?

thanks mate, i would like to try it out.

I didnt take any photo's (although I should have). The screws I'm talking about are on the small rectangular plates that secure the ASIC boards to the heat sink. With those screws as lose as they were the ASIC's would not have been able to transfer heat properly to the heat sinks and most likely would fail prematurely.
