I like e5 because if he doesn't play Nd4 he will have to retreat his knight at f6 to some position where it doesn't do much or else we take it. Also contrary to Ne2 it still leaves the door open for the Nxb5 plan dre1982 suggested.

Your e5 move just made me think of something! I now have a guess why he played h6. Maybe black would like to play e5 but after our Qb3 move he was worried about Ng5 attacking our f7 pawn with both his queen and knight! His h6 move obviously stops us from playing Ng5.

If I am right about his reason for h6 (planning e5) then your e5 recommendation would stop that plan.  I am not saying that e5 is the best move because both Nd5 centralizing the knight and Nd7 attacking the e5 pawn seem like good options for black. We also need to think about who is helped more by the h1-a8 diagonal being opened up.

However we should compare the of us playing e5 to what happens if he plays e5 locking our d3 and e4 pawns in place and taking total control of the d4 square.

I am sticking with my Ne1 vote for now but I admit e5 is at least interesting.
402  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lets play a game of Chess on: September 30, 2015, 08:46:33 AM
I am looking at Nxb5 for trading the Knight for 2 pawns and after that we can build up pressure at the c5 pawn to even win this one.

After
19.Nxb5 axb5
20.Qxb5 Ba6

We have to move our queen and then he can take on d3 next move. So we would end up trading a knight and pawn for just two pawns. After we lose d3 our e4 pawn would become weaker also.

How about the Ne1 recommendation you made last move? I think I like that idea of yours better. It would add another defended to d3 and allow our f2 pawn to advance to f4.

I think more people from Monero have noticed us lately.

Lets do them a favor and help with this vote:
https://tutanota.uservoice.com/forums/237921-general/suggestions/9968298-accept-monero-xmr-for-donations

Similar to when Cryptsy added Monero, maybe it will take Tutanota accepting Monero before they will consider us.  We seem to keep emphasizing our technical differences (and official GUI) which are important. Unfortunately I think merchants may care more about the size of our community.  If a merchant adds Monero and is happy with the result then maybe they will think about adding us too.

Lets work together to support the CryptoNote community.

Suggestion for accepting monero for tutanota has been made:

Please support it, if you want.

28 votes and counting.

150 votes already.
Hopefully we can get to 200 :-)

162 votes now

I also asked the Boolberry community to help vote for Monero!

406  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lets play a game of Chess on: September 30, 2015, 07:33:41 AM
One problem we have right now is that our rook on a1 is stuck defending a5. If we could move twice in a row Qa2 and Rac1 might make sense. However after we play Qa2 he can play Nb4 attacking our d3 pawn and after Qb1 to defend it our rook is still caught in the corner!

I am trying to figure out why he played h6. Ng5 and Bg5 for us did not seem like anything special to me.

I have no move suggestions yet but give me some more time to think.

Hello,

i tried downloading the wallet (windows, full installer). The wallet seems not to synchronize with the network. Next i downloaded the blockchain file and placed it in the right folder. After starting the wallet again, a certain amount of blocks have been loaded, anyway there is no progress in synchronization.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Right-click on the shortcut and add this after the filename

Code:
 --add-priority-node 66.228.33.249:10101 --add-priority-node 59.120.166.36:10101 --add-priority-node 62.201.213.25:10101 --add-priority-node 95.85.21.33:10101 --add-priority-node 107.170.97.197:10101
I'm not sure how many of those are still around. It's just what I've been using forever on my nodes

That worked for me. Thanks!

The more nodes we have the better. Of the major CryptoNote coins, the BBR rewards are still relatively attractive. Maybe that will lead to more more nodes and an increased hash rate
408  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lets play a game of Chess on: September 28, 2015, 03:18:08 PM
The knight is pinned to the queen as of now.
What are you talking about? The queen is on b3.

After Bxd4 cxd4 Ne2 he can play e5 and lock up both of our bishops rendering them useless
Both of what? We have one bishop, after trading the other for Black's knight.

I will also vote 18. Qb3

18. Qb3  Nd4
19. Bxd4 exd4
20. Ne2

Things are not perfect, but I don't see many attractive options. Black cannot play 20..... e5 yet because of our knight on f3. Once he prepares e5 we can move our f3 knight and plan f4 to try to get things going on the kingside. We can also move a rook to the open c file. Our queen seems to be better placed on b3. Material remains even and we would be on move 20. Things could be worse.

18. Rd2 Nd4
19. Qd1  lets us keep both bishops but we have no space and seem completely defensive.

I will be lecturing about investing to the junior college students in a few weeks. The course is all about investing (and maybe some entrepreneurship). Other guest lecturers are from banks.

I had thought to start the slideshow from a mock-up of a generic bank presentation, with title "diversification" and then 2 classes: stocks and bonds. Then the next slides would zoom this out so that eventually the listeners would realize that what was presented to them as the extent of diversification by the banks, would fit in a tiny corner of mainly-correlated instruments with mainly the same risk profile and total loss profile.

Nice job helping to redefine what most people consider diversification.  Please share your slides with us afterwards.

I vote for playing c5 (sicilian defense)

Same choice for me.

1.e4  c5
411  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lets play a game of Chess on: September 28, 2015, 10:34:44 AM
I would go here for 18. Nd2.

This will be a extra defense for our queenside and it also activates our bishop on g2.

If we play Nd2 black can play Nb4 and capture our d3 pawn on the next move.

18. Nd2 removes the d1 rook from the defense of the d3 pawn

A good candidat for OP is Giri Anish.

Young (21yo) from Netherlands where Bitcoin is quite popular there. He played many times Magnus Carlsen when junior, >2700, is very deep now in the Baku Tournament... and lived in Japan during 2002-2008 Cheesy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anish_Giri

I'd like to thank whoever it is because this thread is highly valuable (OP is world top best player !!), due to this thread for a week now I'm learning from zero Chess and it's a real blow, I like it very much spending a lot of time to learn openings and play. I was also digging a lot of information about the best players, their games, the history of Chess and when doing this I fell on this player and thought... well it could really be him !

BTW, the best free and ad-free chess website I've found is http://www.lichess.org have a look (they also have an app).

Nice find!

I did not know any of the current top players had a positive record against Carlsen
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?pid=107252&pid2=52948
LIFETIME RECORD:
Classical games: Anish Giri beat Magnus Carlsen 1 to 0, with 9 draws

Even Kasparov was LUCKY to have a positive record again Carlsen based on 2 rapid games in 2004 when Carlsen was 13 years old! Carlsen was easily winning the game they drew
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?pid=52948&pid2=15940

Eljanov has not played Carlsen nearly as much
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?pid=49456&pid2=52948
LIFETIME RECORD:
Classical games: Magnus Carlsen beat Pavel Eljanov 2 to 0.

Nakamura played Carlsen a lot with a horrible record (based on his rating)
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?pid=10084&pid2=52948
LIFETIME RECORD:
Classical games: Magnus Carlsen beat Hikaru Nakamura 11 to 0, with 18 draws.

Anand may have played Carlsen the most (because of WC match)
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?pid=52948&pid2=12088
LIFETIME RECORD:
Classical games: Magnus Carlsen beat Viswanathan Anand 10 to 8, with 37 draws.

Can I make a recommendation? Maybe instead of just talking about the technical differences in BBR and XMR you can compare CryptoNote solutions to the bitcoin fungibility issues described here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1190707.0

You could also compare and contrast CryptoNote (and the differences between XMR and BBR) to other existing and future alternatives such as Coin Join, Coin Shuffle, Zero Coin, Confidential Transactions and so on.

I will not be playing chess for either side in this game (visit https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1148538 for that).  I am here because happy to see more people interested in chess and because of my interest in privacy.

My primary goal is to promote the adoption of bitcoin. I do not own any Monero or Boolberry.

I am interested in hearing some technical debate on the advantages and disadvantages of CryptoNote versus some of the alternatives mentioned and what BTC could potentially implement.  Please remain as unbiased as possible. If I can acknowledge that bitcoin has some potential weaknesses you should be able to do the same.

If you can provide sources to support your arguments that would be ideal. The more technical the better.

Has anyone seen Pawn Sacrifice yet? What did you think?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596345/releaseinfo

Parts of it are not accurate but I expect that with most movies.

Thanks for visiting this thread letsplayagame! If you are still playing in Baku, good luck in the remainder of the tournament! The developers of Monero and Boolberry can address any technical questions you may have.

I have not seen that movie but plan to eventually (not in the theater).

As a member of team Boolberry I am eager to start helping once Monero has chosen its first move.

Chess problem time!

This was the position after you played 15. e4

If instead of 15....Rac8 I had played 15....Nb8 How should white proceed?

Some of you will see the answer immediately. Please give others some time to think before responding.  I can make more difficult puzzles on another occasion.

I love puzzles! I can see the answer to this one right away (hint = white can win material by force) so I wont answer.

If you have time, additional (harder) puzzles would be wonderful. It would be even better if they came from actual GM games!

Your guess is as good as mine. These are the clues I have seen so far

1. He is not Magnus Carlsen:

3. He is not Bruzón Batista (impossible per #4)

I prefer not to confirm or deny every guess or I may reveal myself quickly.   However I can deny in this case since I already provided a clue that eliminated him as a possibility (based on current ratings):

4. Rated over 2700

Yes I am a GM and ranked on that list.

5. He won round 1 in Baku

I don't plan to announce my results from my round 2 match because that would significantly narrow down the number of people I could be.

We don't know how he did in round 2 or 3 but most (maybe all?) people rated over 2700 were paired down in round 2 implying he had a >50% chance of advancing past round 2.

6. He is not Viswanathan Anand because he decided not to play in Baku

7. He is not Gata Kampsky (upset in round 1) but his current rating is below 2700 anyway (impossible per #4). From the top of my head I am not aware of any more major upsets of people in round 1 or people over 2700 who did not show up (aside from Carlsen and Anand already mentioned).

8. He is not satoshi (we don't know if Satoshi is a chess player or not but it would be funny if letsplayagame and satoshi played each other and were unaware of each others identities):
https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3lj2t9/long_term_goal_promoting_bitcoin_usage_for/cv757pc

that even a child can exploit.
well i think the "GM" have the advantage in here.
since he can read all of our discusion in this game.
and even 1 person saw the best move but the others,
cant see the objective of it. it will be useless
since this is a majority votes where common moves
are following with common thinkers.
like if ones says i want to move e4. well others will just follow it.
even its not the best move.
i cannot see now the real purpose of this game for the "GM".
well ima out here. Goodluck guys.

Black may have an advantage but the game is far from over!

Why not try harder to help if you have better ideas?

I feel like Nakamura would be the bitcoin contender on this list. I don't know if that's our secret grandmaster, but I can hope Smiley

Instead of Nakamura why not his opponent live right now?

Some evidence:

Exact same opening today in Nakamura vs Eljanov except he played Bd7 instead of Nbd7 on move 5?

If he afraid Nakamura is reading this thread and getting all his ideas (and switched his 5th move to throw him off)?

Will many GMs start following this thread now?

WTF!
