4001  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: USDT to Bypass FX Control in China on: July 10, 2020, 01:16:48 PM
What's the reasonable premium of buying in P2P market vs exchange? That's would be the transaction cost. I would expect BTC or tether price higher in foreign exchange controlled countries like China or Argentina.
With P2P marketplaces, you can choose offers you like (mk4 told you already) and you can choose the marketplace that gives you cheapest fees for your trades (as I know, fees tend to be different for buyers and sellers. Usually fees are more expensive for sellers, and fees for buyers almost have free of fees with trades). For bank transfers, there are additional fees and determine by the bank you use to transfer your money.

Have free rights to choose offers and marketplaces, banks, etc. You will be almost get freedom on P2P marketplaces but be aware of scammers on such. Don't be attracted by any words, any promises from anyone to trade off Escrow. Don't release your bitcoin if you don't get your money from your trade partners.
4002  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies are free to choose the journey they will go on: July 10, 2020, 01:02:34 PM
Not!. The first thing a newbie should do is go read the forum rules. After that if you are free to do what you want.
Intention before joining anything is important. Read rules is a next step of intention identification of one person. Without clear plan on what you are doing, you will not be able to do something good and well planned.

Rules are important and must read but it is not the first thing to do.
4003  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the difference between a bitcoin address and a bitcoin wallet? on: July 10, 2020, 11:57:02 AM
Isn't the address is same as wallet?
No. Wallets have private key and many public addresses. I don't promote for Bitamp wallet but you can see my posts on Bitamp as an example for bitcoin address types.
It is your key, it is your bitcoin. Secure your key.

With Bitamp wallet, from a single private key, you can have three options to get 3 types of receiving address list, for: standard(1xx), segwit (bxx), and P2SH (3xx). You can choose which types of address you want to use, from the Overview tab or from the Addresses tab. Choose it from the dropdown menu.

The wallet supports change address too.

Additionally, you can import BTC address you get from Bitamp to other wallets, such as Electrum.

On Bitamp, with each receiving address, you will have the key icon, click on it to get private key for that specific address.
Below is an example for you. You should never disclose your private key like that.

On Electrum, click on File > New/ Restore > Import Bitcoin addresses or private key:
- If you copy and paste your BTC address from Bitamp, you will get an imported, watching only on Electrum.
- If you copy and paste your private key from Bitamp, you will get an imported wallet on Electrum.
Name your wallet file and set up a good password on Electrum when you import it.

For more generic info, you can read the book:
Specifically the chapters 4 (Keys, Addresses) and 5 (Wallets):

Private and Public Keys

A bitcoin wallet contains a collection of key pairs, each consisting of a private key and a public key. The private key (k) is a number, usually picked at random. From the private key, we use elliptic curve multiplication, a one-way cryptographic function, to generate a public key (K). From the public key (K), we use a one-way cryptographic hash function to generate a bitcoin address (A). In this section, we will start with generating the private key, look at the elliptic curve math that is used to turn that into a public key, and finally, generate a bitcoin address from the public key. The relationship between private key, public key, and bitcoin address is shown in Private key, public key, and bitcoin address.

Quote
Wallets
Bitcoin wallets contain keys, not coins. Each user has a wallet containing keys. Wallets are really keychains containing pairs of private/public keys (see [private_public_keys]). Users sign transactions with the keys, thereby proving they own the transaction outputs (their coins). The coins are stored on the blockchain in the form of transaction outputs (often noted as vout or txout).

I don't understand why we need to uninstall and install windows operating system just to install electrum wallet?

I am also having electrum in my desktop but I never done this, can someone explain what is the reason behind OPs action.
It is for people who don't have a personal computer and have to use computers on Internet service store, and such computers are public ones and are used by so many people. There are risks of malwares, spywares, virus, trojans, etc. on such.
If this is the case then its better to install electrum wallet on their smartphone itself so they can access their funds with convenience.And I do wonder computer in a public store is allowed to alter operating system on our own. Roll Eyes
No I won't. Smartphones should not be used for important storage, personal info, and our money. If I use smartphone for such goal, I will use it to store my few dollars, not more than $100, just to use if I am in a hurry and don't have connection to my computer.

On smartphones, you can more easier make typos, wrong enter, many more.

P2P marketplaces can help you. There are some for you to choose but I advise you to choose LocalBitcoins or Paxful.

Paxful: Either create a listing/ trading volume >1500$

I noticed below news looks like people are using tether. Anyone has experience buying USDT in China then exchange to BTC then to USD in US?
People like Tether USD because it is a stable coin. For money transfers, people like it because they can move money fastly with Tether USD on ERC20. Remember it is only faster on ERC20 (or TRC20) but it is not faster on OMNI layer. With OMNI layer transaction, its speed will nearly the same as when you move your fund with bitcoin.

I don't know where your idea comes from. You move your funds from your local money to BTC, then to USD, and don't have to use Tether USD. With P2P marketplaces you can do that fastly.
4006  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies are free to choose the journey they will go on: July 10, 2020, 04:09:51 AM
Well, you are right and as I have observed recently, most newbies are spammers they are spam their referral links in the forum and using different accounts to post on the topic aside from the OP. They deserve to get a reward, all of them have been nuked.
Such ones choose to use the forum in the shady and negative ways. Let they be what they want to be.
Quote
Perhaps there are additional options aside from what you gave in the newbie's journey, --[1] -Fraud victim asking for help and [2] -For business purpose establishing ANN thread. Not all newbies are here just to be a good member, there are various reasons why they are here and indeed, the most common reason was already you have stated.
Fraud victims and crypto entrepreneurs are truly good members (if they don't start a project to scam). Their projects can be successfully or failed, but their contributions, their projects help the crypto to be spread wider globally.
if they choose the fourth -good member- and not having the enthusiasm to spare head it, can leave them in the remaining three especially the second -spammers-
In a short summary, -newbies- work and the rest is history
If they want to be good, and start their works, don't give up, they will become good members definitely. I don't see why they will become spammers.
I don't think that new members explicitly choose to be spammers or bounty hunters instead of being good members, and as for scammers, those people aren't actually newbies, they probably have dozens of other accounts, some maybe even with higher ranks.

Some users who started as shitposters eventually changed their ways and became very valuable users, this is because when you posts are good, they will get merited without people going through your post history to check if you are worthy.
Scammers can be experienced scammers or newbie scammers. Newbie good members, newbie scammers like so. Shitposters and scammers can change to be good members, I agree with you on this opinion. However, scammers don't change to be good members. They love the ways the live as scammers and love the way the earn money by scam the others.
Quote
You shouldn't encourage newbies to earn merit via creating educational topic posts, because they are newbies, they will often fail to do so properly and will only introduce misconceptions.
No. I don't encourage anyone. If you check my threads, some of them are simply questions when I needed help for my needs. Some questions are truly come from newbies. Anyhow, you nailed a point that newbies don't need to replicate anyone else. Just choose the things they like, have interests in and keep up their good works on such.
Spam is usually a direct result of the first; bounty hunting especially when it's done with no regard for the forum; enlisting multiple accounts and posting simply to fulfil your post count can cause a serious spam problem as is seen in some boards.
The position one takes is really down to how the forum was presented to them when they learnt about it and also how much they are willing to read and gain knowledge.
~~~
Forum members would likely transition through various stages. Scammers however, could be bounty hunters, spammers or even high quality posters, and are usually unrepentant.
There are many different reasons why members join the forum and spam. People can change from bad to good but not all of them will change like that. Indeed, very small percent of them will change positively like that.
The choice is indeed in their hands. But being a good member will have a more positive impact to be able to achieve a high Rank and be able to participate in the BTC Signature Campaign which has more potential to pay consistently. At the moment I am also focused on developing my account and becoming a good and useful member of this forum.
Knowledge is what most important good members will get from their good works. What are good works? Such works can contribute good information, are helpful and users will spend decent times and efforts to build up their good works. From such journey, they learn more. After that, other members will contribute and somehow help them to learn more. More knowledge will be gotten for good members.
I rarely see someone really new on this forum, even rarer to find a new guy who acts like a normal member to learn about Bitcoin.
Likely similar as people who consider themselves as bitcoin investors but don't know any basic about bitcoin. Some consider themselves as bitcoin enthusiasts but don't know how to install and use a bitcoin wallet. What they care indeed is money.
I wouldn't put bounty hunters & spammers in the same pool with scammers. I would expect very new members to believe BitcoinTalk is a literal job and a way to get a Bitcoin in no time, just as I probably thought when I first registered on here. Even for older bounty hunters the reason why they aren't seen as normal/good members on here is still a question mark.
I put them into different groups but there are some of users will do multitasks: scam, spam, bounty hunt. Your other words are true, I agree.
Everyone has the right to choose their own path in the forum and will never be forced. Being a good member who contributes is a choice and those are things that are highly recommended by the forum and users because that will make us individual who have benefit for the forum and users.
Totally true. Your destiny is on your hands, your mind and your decisions.
Quote
I would never agree if all those bounty hunter are spammer, because I can also find them as good quality poster that also contribute. But many of the bounty hunter are spammer who in turn are those who post lots of low quality and useless thing.
You are right but most of bounty hunters are spammers. I guess 80% of bounty hunters are spammers.
For sure this kind of decision was only common when there are a lot already using bitcointalk to some campaign of cryptocurrency projects like altcoins who starting their ICO in this forum, but for sure way back 2010 - 2015 maybe, those time is only for Bitcoin knowledge that wants a newbie need, since way back being a bounty hunter is still not so popular.
I don't know because I was not here in 2010 or 2015.
Almost every Newbie is here to earn money through Bounties. Earning in bounties is not that good nowadays therefore they resort to spamming and when they get caught and get banned they would create a new ID to scam other members.
Good earnings from bounties or bad earnings, it does not matter. You can earn thousands of dollars from bounties but you won't get any far and wont' get rich with it.
I like how you separate the other 3 from good members. My favorite type of member is the Builder. Someone who creates something, the more innovative and existent on the blockchain the better.
It is.
I used to be a newbie and my age is not too old on the forum. I registered the account on April 28, 2019 and my first forum-versary is 3 months ago.
You will not read if I write something too long as tl;dr so I will write it too short for you.
As a newbies, you have to choose the journey you want to go:
- Bounty hunters
- Spammers
- Scammers
- Good members.
There is nothing needed to say if you choose the first three. If you fortunately and bravely to choose the last one, and want to go as good members the next thing you have to do is choosing the area you have interests in. It is important because you will more easily spend more time for that, and you will feel more comfortable to do so. It is your interests so your works with it will bring lots of fun back to you.
I chose to focus my time on the forum with security and privacy and wallet's features and usages. You can see it in my first thread I created to ask about Brave browser - What's wrong with Brave browser?. Unfortunately, because of privacy problems I stopped using the browser months ago.
Is life Fair to us or do I say life isn't balance?
Balance is not often found because there is very scarce times when we can see two people do same things at the same period and get different results.
Same things are somewhat similar effort levels they put in their works.
Same period means there are nearly same risks and opportunities for them.
If two above are nearly the same but the last one (results) are different, you can say something about fairness, balance of life. If two above are different, very different, no need to say anything for the last one (results).
I've always heard and read that I must disconnect from the internet when creating Electrum Wallets, to keep away from hacks, viruses, malware or having my bitcoins stolen.
Electrum: You must download Electrum wallet from official website, and must verify wallet. See the guides below to understand how importance it is to verify your wallet and how to do so.
Electrum wallet - Update safely and avoid phishing wallets?
Verify wallets before installing & using. You'll lose fund if you don't verify
5. created Electrum wallet, write the seed in a paper. save the wallet file in my usb.
No, you should not store your wallet in your USBs. Because you can lose your USB to someone else. It will be sucked if you don't set up a password for your wallet.
But even if you set up a password for your wallet, how strong it is, I don't know and people can crack your password.
[GUIDE] How to Create a Strong/Secure Password
If your demand temporarily is not to move your bitcoin, and your demand is only to observe your wallet balance, I advise you to more safely use Bitcoin block explorers and  use Watch only mode in Electrum wallet, like this:
How to do?
Import Bitcoin Addresses or Private keys. Choose to import your Bitcoin address to have the Watch Only mode. If you import your Private key, you will have a full wallet, not Watch Only one.
With the Watch Only mode: after import your bitcoin address you will get a pop-up box like that
Quote
This wallet is watching-only. This means you will not be able to spend Bitcoins with it. Make sure you own the seed phrase or the private keys, before you request Bitcoins to be sent to this wallet.
No worries. I'll keep the sig on for a week or so, hoping it'll continue
I think you should not because if all participants keeps wearing signature and avatars as well as keep posting actively as previously when then campaign is on, the Bitamp company will not see difference when they run or not run the campaign.
Why not automatically temp ban people whose topic titles are similar enough to the ones OP mentioned, and have it expire for a week or so? Most scam topics have something like "[WORKING]" or "✔️Verified" or "Earn up to {x} BTC" so an automated banning bot can look for those key words.
Only theymos can do so. Last year he did it with Yobit.
That aside, bitcoin core is the most secure and the original bitcoin wallet for computers, it connect users directly to the blockchain. And thanks for your corrections.
It is your another misconception too. Bitcoin Core and Electrum all connect your wallet to server and nodes. The difference is what they store on your computer. Bitcoin Core (full node) store all things, entire blockchain; prune node store all things of each transaction but in limited period by personal setup. Electrum as SPV wallet, only stores block headers, not entire blockchain.
1. Where do the topics go? after a Minute I set my eyes on it and I come back again to check for that topic I won't find it
There are two destination sets for topics: Trashcan, and any board in the forum. We as users can not delete our topics to trashcan. Only moderators can do so.
Quote
2. Who has access to locked topics in the forum apart from the creator of that topic?
There are two types of locked topics: Locked by creators; locked by global moderators or admins.
The first type: it is clear that creators can have access to their locked topics when they unlock those topics.
The second type: only global moderators or admins can have access to such escalating locked topics.
People who have userscripts can get access to those locked topics and can quote. A kinda shitty script for quoting posts in locked topics
4019  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: old blockchain.info mnemonic (passphrase) - I LOST ALL? on: July 08, 2020, 12:12:22 PM
I decided to stop using the blockchain.info (before they bought the domain blockchain.com and directed blockchain.info to that one). I did not have much bitcoin in my old blockchain.info wallet and I was a newbie. It is my fault sure when I did not carefully back up my wallet password and my 2FA secret code for that wallet.
I remembered I only backed up wallet ID, and believed that I always remember wallet password. After months I did not frequently log in wallet, I forgot the password, that is so stupid.
Another stupid thing I do is my phone got technical problems and need to recovered to the pure status. I lost both password and 2FA secret code. I lost the wallet.
I read that people can brute force wallet from wallet id and some good combinations of characters in password.
From the lose, I decided to use non-custodial wallets only.
Oh Dear,
I really forgot to celebrate my second meritversary?
28 Jun 2018 - 28 Jun 2020.
Two years and 3,500 merits later I still thank you for every single moment, discussion, exchange of idea, lesson and of course merit we had in this forum.
I shall update the op with a few details, but I think my ego is pumped enough for the moment, I will do whenever I will feel down.
Thank you all guys for the support!
Two years and 3500 merits. I do a simple math and you earn 5 merits everyday in average. Such a merit earner.
From my side, I earn 131 merits in the last 120 days. A simple math shows I earn 1 merit every day (a little higher than 1). Your quality is 5 times higher than mine. It is my shame to compare with you.
Congratulations for your second meritversary.
