The other part of the decision not to use bounties is that the incentive is to do the minimum required to collect the bounty with no further development or support.  This isn't always the case with the windows GUI being one example.

I have input on this, but it's quite late so I'll have to save it for later.

My opinion is still a ''kickstarter'' campaign like protonmail.ch did, another privacy oriented "service", it was very successful and funded it with hundreds of thousands, the only "requirement" for it is having a fancy website with all the goals and working functions of monero so a random person can decide and with their freewill give (or not) to monero project.

Anon136 said he would host it. How would we promote it? Here? Reddit? Other? What kind of marketing materials? A general announcement with a link? A promo piece in some crypto-e-zines would be nice--Other?

I think coders see coding solutions, engineers see engineering solutions,  investors see investing solutions, altruists see altruistic solutions, and these are all represented well. But do we have marketing solution? Do we have marketers?
4042  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] Moderated Monero General Discussion Thread on: September 26, 2014, 06:32:02 AM
So, in any case, to break the ice, I think exhausting crowdfunding via Kickstarter and Anon should be a priority and DEFINITELY precede any further discussion of more controversial funding methods.

My offer stands.

+1

Also, is there a game plan on marketing for when the GUI comes out? I was thinking a "got anonymity?" image with a link to the GUI download. Could post them over the reddit boards (dark web, cryptocoin, and any bitcoin boards that don't insta down vote all things alt). Anyone else have any thoughts on marketing?

Edit: And bitcoin gambling sites, duhhh. That's first Shocked

A post mine is completely out of the question in my book.

Jesus. This isn't the USD where the government just tries to solve it's problems by printing more money. I mean wtf.

The only option is to change the emission schedule.

What is the problem with price going down for now until more adoption? If the coin is legit it will succeed. As i said if someone believes that the price will fall then sell now buy back later.

Adoption should increase with the GUI, so if a post-mine is the road, we should go down it prior to the GUI. Not siding here, just pointing out the time frame.

I think your entering very dangerous territory by suggesting changes to core features of the coin. MEW will have significant power over the DEV team since holders can effectively collude to blackmail DEV's into following their suggestions since other wise they can dump coins and slash market prices.

MEW's role should be in helping the economy grow and business' develop not in suggesting changes to the core fundamentals of the coin. For better or worse the emission curve and block rewards are what they are and that is how they should remain.

To counteract this shouldn't a place for the miners and exchanges be given special consideration? At the very least the miners; they run the network and keep the coins secure. The Devs should always have full control until the coin is in fact decentralized. Just thinking out loud, so forgive if I've got it wrong.

What's the update on funding efforts? (This is for Devs and MEW). With the effort that was put in over the last few days and continues to be put forth, I think some people might want to give back  Smiley A thank you can only go so far.

Sign of times to come...

lol

Nice job, but I think you need to adjust your 24hr volume to the moon launch setting.

This isn't photoshopped.

This will happen more often in 2-3 years. The volume will also match.

We can all hope.

Good blog post with recap of recent XMR "attack": http://bullbearanalytics.com/2014/09/23/whats-going-monero/

Enjoyed! Much better than the piecemeal story I was envisioning from the forums. Would be cool to see a write-up of this posted on one of the crypto-news agencies.

he is claiming to have started the time warp attack and that it takes a couple days
not sure if he will be combining TW attack with anything else
so stay vigilant and dont assume silence means all is well
dont assume silence means anything is wrong either

James

Thank you for the good advice James. We're vigilant.

Hi guys - just a note that we have asked exchanges to suspend XMR deposits/withdrawals for 24 hours. Trading is not suspended. This is a precautionary move.

So in essence you're locking people from sending coins to the exchange... So even if someone wanted to sell now they cant unless the xmr is already on the exchange..

OMFG...

This is gonna be some serious butthurt!

You guys are criminals....

Price will go to zero and now people dont even have a last shot of saving some of their investment..

You are a royal fuckup along with the rest of the monero devs.

Bob, do you need a hug?  Cheesy
4052  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: September 23, 2014, 08:51:19 AM
So here's an exchange between myself and a betting site:

-------------------------
With all the conjecture about FBI surveillance of BTC, would you guys ever consider offering bets in XMR? The Devs are discussing a plan to gain additional funding on Bitcointalk and gambling seems like a natural fit.
-------------------------

Hey xxxxxx,

Sorry about the delay, no one on our team could answer this so they left it for me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe XMR price is is not pegged to BTC. Assuming it isn't, the issue with accepting any alt or other cryptocurrency solution is that it segregates our betting volumes. For example, if you're a heavy BTC guy, you will want BTC back, not XMR. Likewise, you'll want to know that this bet pot has a pot of 5 BTC today, and will have a pot of 5 or more BTC tomorrow. If we allow bets in XMR, then the pot value will fluctuate and as a BTC holder you may feel it is too risky to bet within it if you're unsure about the XMR price. Eg: You'll want your 2.2x payout, but will actually receive 2.05x if the price of XMR drops heavily within the 3 months the bet goes on for.

I may be wrong (haven't looked that much into Monero) with how it operates, but that's our issue with accepting anything that has a smaller market.

If we hear more demand for it, we can easily do something like xmr.betmoose.com or betmoose.com/xmr and have an xmr-only section. Our exchange is quite flexible in that way. Link to the devs discussing that plan?

Best,
xxxxxx
-----------------------

Seems a fair hold-off point. Is there a market solution?

how many hours until we know for sure? would now be a good time to buy shitloads of xmr, are we going to see big rise after "nothing happened"?

I think 29 hrs from now.

thank you

Not sure if XBC made this or what, but i found it on some (this?) thread a while ago...

I disagree with the self moderated thread.  Several other coins are specifically NOT open to negative discussions and become a blind group circlejerk.

While I have no fear of that happening to XMR (at least to the extent I've seen in other places) I feel leaving the main chat thread unmoderated speaks volumes about it's legitimacy.

In online forums, there are little ways to differentiate legitimate speaking from malicious. Established members recognize each other (reputation) but occasional lurkers do not have this guide. It is easy to affect the quality of discussion, and even the perception of community opinion, by cheap methods that are difficult to thwart. This is why they are so commonly used.

There is, for example, no realistic reason for any actual cryptoperson to hate let's say Monero. Yet by reading the forums, there is a perception that there is a large anti-Monero crowd there. In actuality there is not. The number of Monero users is over 10,000 and they are happy with their using. A small number of accounts is spreading their negative view.

This could be mitigated by making the posting costly, by instituting a minimum reputation threshold, by making a per-post fee, by making it needed to show that the poster actually has Moneros if he is going to talk about it, etc. These measures have not been implemented. The only way to deal with trolls is deleting their posts, which angers them, or ignoring them, which leaves the main problem - affecting the perception of the lurkers - uncured.

We in the Monero community have not yet reached the consensus on how to tackle this angle of attack. Some members have hinted that dedicated forums are coming. This is definitely a good development. The "insiders" of the coin need discussion channels where there is no interference. Yet, the importance of Bitcoin Forum > Other > Alternate cryptocurrencies is really big and there are no plans to leave it.

There has been talk about Monero having more than its fair share of threads and activity in this forum. Now that is complete bullshit. The Alternate cryptocurrencies main (without even the [ANN] and others) has 31,440 threads total, of which the 20 or so Monero threads that are started by Monero supporters are hardly an excessive percentage. That many of the Monero threads are in the first page, speaks about the vitality of the community. Monero is a new coin, and ranks about TOP-5 in $ value of emission per day and trade volume. Also it is very easy to not see Monero-related stuff - just not click those threads!

We believe this multi-pronged attack has gone a little too far now, and there might be retaliation coming.

The issue is fighting stupidity with censorship in an area dedicated to total anarchy winds up getting you labelled with the other moderated regimes.

I would have no problem moving to alternate forums but on bitcointalk I think non moderated helps the image.  People can create whatever stupid threads in the main area they want even if we do moderate the chat thread to try & make Monero look like a fool.  Which is what they've done.

Locking down and moderating this thread is a largely defensive move that I think would backfire.

+1

Why not make the reddit forum the official discussion (without the trolls) page;  open for new users without being open season for trolls.

I am not here to bash or so, I just want to know if the exploit is real or not because i can't follow it anymore. If not then is perfect buying time.

Cheers

Right now it's indeterminable. There have been no specifics given to us, and given the contradictory and nonsensical nature of the breadcrumbs we're leaning towards it not being real until demonstrated otherwise or given technical details we can follow.

Way to show some confidence in your coin! Don't you get it? XMR will always have this dark cloud over it. Just like VRC, just like DRK and just like Cloak.

There is no coming back from this one.

Stealthcoin is the true anon winner these days and I'll be putting my btc there.

Now just admit that in one day and a few hours XMR can implode and all that money would be lost forever. I mean, you do realize that if BCX can steal coins then the exchanges will be forced to shut down trading while leaving anyone with xmr in their wallet out 100%.

I've got my popcorn ready!

http://itsalmo.st/#timetokillxmr

More discounted XMR! Thanks, Bob! Keep up the good work!

Thanks what everyone in drk and vrc and cloak were saying at the time too.. Go check in on them and see who they are holding up.

LMAO.. I've seen it 100 times and L'll see another 100 more time.

You clearly know the future Bob. So tell me what I'm about to write next? Or even better, tell me why someone with your vast expertise in picking winners is trying to convince others that he's right when, if he is correct, everyone will know in two days? If you're smart you are converting XST at the high price into XMR at the discounted price. By the way, all your hard work, mainly motivating me to purchase XMR at a discounted rate, is very appreciated. Every post you make is a BUY signal for me.  Grin

Good I'm glad you keep buying.. You're giving the devs and rprtila or wtv his name is the opportunity to get out on your back. (which is what they are trying to do anyway) Go check the cloak thread and ask how many of them were saying the same thing as you and thanking people like me for getting them cheap cloak at 100-50-25-15K. LMAO... Like I said earlier. I've seen this 100 times.....

And this forum has seen its share of trolls with doom and gloom predictions that never come true. Appeals to history without acknowledging other histories is a good way to arrive at myopic conclusions.

So get used to seeing me here for a while, well... a day and a bit. Then I suppose this coin will be locked on all the exchanges and I'll just be sitting back with my popcorn watching all you guys freak the fuck out! I'll have to make a new profile.

Never make a new profile.. Are you joking.. I dont run from my account and use shills like all the rest of you. I say what I got to say and if you dont like it.... Fuckoff.

I dont hide behind a fake twitter account and I wont be leaving this account even if BXC is wrong. I happen to have some inside info though. I guess it's some of the perks with working with 30 traders and market-makers on a daily basis.

Wait, hold-up! So you have inside information? Aren't you trying to save all the investors from the Big, Bad Monero Devs? Wouldn't that mean you'd share every piece of information available to you? Bob, are you holding out information that's damaging to Monero? Why would you do this Bob? Bob, why?  Huh
