4041  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin's name and Logo Registered in Spain. on: June 24, 2020, 12:24:22 PM
Quote
Also, Spain won't be the first country where Bitcoin is a registered trademark, but nothing big came out of it - no one tried to claim ownership of Bitcoin's protocol or software,
Because no single entity 'owns' or can 'own' the BTC protocol or code. Both are Open Source and were developed as a collaboration between many different people.

But can a single entity own the name of that protocol or that entire project? Or its logo?

I have no idea on the bases by which trademark registration applications are granted but this particular decision appears questionable to me.

There was a similar post posted yesterday pertaining to this event but I think what he only owns is the logo and the name of Bitcoin in Spain. If someone tried to use it, then he could use his power to get profit out of it. He can't control the entire project as like said in the above post, it's an open source and anyone can use it.

And we also have this one: https://trademarks.ipo.gov.uk/ipo-tmcase/page/Results/1/UK00003279106 and https://trademarks.justia.com/861/35/bitcoin-86135516.html.

But in Russia, it was denied, http://www.rapsinews.ru/arbitration/20160321/275664290.html.

And we all know that Bitcoin's BTC logo can't be patented, if it is, then we might as well patented, Dollar or Yen.

This man in Spain probably got away as their law probably doesn't see Bitcoin as a currency but as a piece of technology. I'm not sure though.

It'll be that they can protect misuse of the name. It's going to be similar to how you can use other logos in an appropriate space, a patent just blocks misuse of a name and logo if it's actively enforced.

For the enforcement part, I think these were all just registered so no one else did, it was 2011 so it was hopefully someone close to the space....

The EU considers bitcoin money as a whole, is the dollar sign not protected? Can you not claim a piece of paper is a dollar without problem (just curious)...

4042  Economy / Economics / Re: Mortgages are getting margin called in the shadow banking system. Repo market. on: June 24, 2020, 12:15:16 PM
Is a fall in property prices that much of a detriment at this stage? It's annoying markets get done like this but it's better than what we saw in 2006...

I don't think it's unreasonable to think the riskier loans are moved to a different fund (I'm assuming it's a fund and not an individual mortgagee) they've probanly called for that themselves and traditional bank accounts don't make much in interest...
4043  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why is Bitcoin volume so low? What effect on price? on: June 23, 2020, 11:14:26 PM
If the buy and sell walls are pretty big then it might just be the price temporarily stabaliding/consolidating for a few days. It's moved from 9400 to 9600 recently so it might just take a break from. That movement and remain steady at this price.

If it stays like this for too long then a breakout is likely because a divergence could be formed...
4044  Economy / Economics / Re: What if this pandemic persists till the end of the year? on: June 23, 2020, 11:06:30 PM
The socioeconomic impact of this crisis could be felt for a lot longer, that's how crises work...

I think we could see a trickle down affect occurring a lot of the time so the working class will probably be the worst hit by this as a lot of engineers may be unemployed. If unemployment rises in Europe, a lot of money could be lost by companies due to paid severance that's required for every worker (not sure about other continents)...

The impact of every crises lasts a very long time, it may take up to 3 years for a lot of people to find work or some may never since automated systems may have taken the place of staff during this time.
4045  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin's name and Logo Registered in Spain. on: June 23, 2020, 03:39:04 PM
Is there not already an EU wide patent? https://trademarks.ipo.gov.uk/ipo-tmcase/page/Results/4/EU010103646 (apparently registered in Germany in 2011)...

I mean it's a step but I don't know if it'll stop people relating scams to the name...
4046  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Beginner's needs directives from seniors. on: June 23, 2020, 03:25:47 PM
You join the forum because you want to be a part of the community imo. If you have no interest in cryptocurrency then you have no interest joining here. What else would you be here for?

How can we support also, information is generally readily provided and to gain notice from other members you have to exert yourself to write something other members are going to recognise you for... The isn't greatly inviting for newbies but this is a large community so what do you expect you have to exert and asert yourself somewhere. Rank is fairly meaningless anyway, this forum could be gone tomorrow only stay here if you're wanting and willing to contribute.
4047  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin address with 31 characters on: June 23, 2020, 04:34:30 AM
I think it's just that the 0s at the start are compressed into nothing like you do with numbers.

It's more logical to write 5462 than 00005462 unless you're using a screen or memory system that specifically implies its usage.

It's probably possible to get a 1 character base 58 ripemd hash too which is potentially still secure (I haven't looked into anything other than sha1 and 2)....
4048  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitpay money lost on: June 22, 2020, 09:46:49 PM
If you know it definitely wasn't you, you could ask them to forward any identifiable information onto the relevant authorities/law enforcement.

Is there a reason you left your funds on here, if 0.35btc is a lot to you then you might want to empty your wallet into a computer or hardware wallet more often.
4049  Economy / Economics / Re: An interesting case of a widespread misconception on: June 22, 2020, 08:15:37 PM
Yeah if you imagine you could but something with a half pence in the 80s and a pound was considered a lot in the past I'd agree with this... Also people didn't have many possessions in the past (some of this could be related to globalisation though like bananas and pineapples used to be ornaments - now they can reach you in 16 hours by plane)...

The advancements in technology are quite considerable since one person used to control everything thst happened in a town in the past (a lot of the time) and now multiple parties can compete... If air shipping went up in price for example, a passenger jet company could take over.
4050  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Avoiding/Detecting/Removing Viruses on: June 22, 2020, 05:45:46 PM
I think also if you have a preexisting virus an AV can't remove, you might have to get a boot able disk which you can either get a computer store to run or run yourself using the tools it has to run more advanced forensics and remove them from your machine. I haven't actually done this myself and the obvious next step I have done is just put a new drive in and start again from scratch (copying stuff across with an AV that can detect problems where necessary)...
4051  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do not be deceived by sending PM. on: June 22, 2020, 05:10:56 PM
So what you're saying is there's a scam trend where the scammer sends you an address to send to someone else. So that person attempts to impersonate you by doing this.

So if someone sent it to me and I sent it on the person it was sent to would expect to be dealing with me? Would uou not say something like "this address was sent to me via telegram by user @" with an optional (this isn't me you're dealing with but tbh this should be implied).
4052  Other / Off-topic / Re: What you should know about Hackers on: June 22, 2020, 02:44:35 PM
I'd lump gray hat and black hat in the same black hat category.

White hat and red hat ha e approval of the software owner and blue hat have assumed permission.

The best way to protect yourself from hacking is by doing research on the vulnerabilities you might face or by hiring a consultant to take you through them. You can't expect people here to know everything as most people will cover the major parts and then parts specific to their applications only..

Can you define forking a bit more? I'm not sure if this refers to repository forking or something else.
4053  Economy / Economics / Re: How in the world we going to restart the world economy ? on: June 22, 2020, 02:29:24 PM

On the contrary I also believe that people have lost nothing since as whole world was stopped at one point. This means the whole chain from producer to middleman to consumer was halted. Thus the loss which is being hiked so much these days doesn't really exists.

It's just that we have lagged behind a lot and it won't take much time before economy resets itself.

Yeah I think there is a point that if one country bails out the weak companies during a pandemic like the US or China may have done to an extent then other countries have to do the same to remain stable.

A lot of economies are propped up most of the time by a constant income supply from pensions into companies so that cash flow being hit will probably cause additional issues..  Although companies should've forseen problems since December.
4054  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Estonia Tightens Checks on Crypto Firms, Cancels 500 Licenses! on: June 22, 2020, 01:32:17 PM
The cost increase from €345 to €3300 sounds very high though for a startup to pay although is probably in line with other licenses (or still a lot cheaper)...

And yeah trying to take out money laundering is good for them to do unless those people are just going to move elsewhere but just shutting those firms down could send a positive message to other (1) crypto isn't just used for money laundering (2) it's being more actively regulated than it has in the past...
4055  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to accumulate activity? on: June 22, 2020, 01:46:36 AM
You can only gain activity through posting. 1 post = 1 activity point and you can only gain up to 14 in every 14 day period (they start on a Tuesday of every other week).. You're better off looking in meta for the stickied threads than asking here though...
4056  Other / Meta / Re: Trust System on: June 22, 2020, 01:20:30 AM
The trust system is used as a way to judge others. You're advised to read people's trust before you do trades especially if you haven't interacted with them before.

It's mainly apparent on the marketplace boards though where you can trade with other users. The # symbol means they're either a scammer or are highly likely to scam. The - += scores just tell you how many of each the user has based on the people you trust (by default you trust defaulttrust but you can change your trust list in settings by clicking your own trust link on your profile)..
4057  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I have a business idea Crypto4Gold on: June 21, 2020, 11:19:19 PM

One of the biggest problem whom i do see that will really be hard to get rid of specially when dealing of with precious valuable metals.Tendency of theft is there unless if theres insurance with full value declaration but
that will surely add up on the cost or expense.

This idea would work but it would really need to have lots of works to arranged first. Why not try to do it first locally?

Yeah I can imagine insurance outside of North America (ex Mexico) and europe for expensive goods would be very expensive. Most things travel through the EU without insurance or with a very cheap insurance because they're rarely lost and normally covered by the shipping firm anyway but that's just speaking from here...

And yeah the suggestion to op of doing it locally is something I'd support as well as seeing if they could team up with a jewelers or pawnbrokers to offer this stuff..

Trying to run something like this sounds like it could become very costly given the pumps in gold recently...
4058  Economy / Economics / Re: How in the world we going to restart the world economy ? on: June 21, 2020, 09:00:41 PM
Not including furloughed staff, unemployment rates are at 8%.afaik which is 2.5x the standard 3% thst was expected. So yes more are without funds but at the same time more aren't spending money on things like restaurants and pubs so they should still have funds for a while....

A lot of unemployed staff will probably refind employment within the next 3 years if they don't find it straight away as the economy recovers. Already the stock market seems to be reaching higher on whole world indexes and Europe ex UK (the UK is taking a bit longer to grow but I think that's due to airlines and travel companies based here).
4059  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I have a business idea Crypto4Gold on: June 21, 2020, 08:26:07 PM
You could start by trying to do a by gold by post for crypto? I don't know if anyone's on that yet and it might be pretty easy to do with little investment if you find a reputable 24 karrot/.999 seller/minter...

It might be hard to work out what's legit and what isn't and will take time (you might also have to process impure versions if you choose I've heard of black and white gold at least....)
4060  Economy / Economics / Re: Rise in US unemployment. Thoughts? on: June 21, 2020, 07:13:16 PM
I doubt they'll suspend all visas at once, they may attempt to stop travel in or out for a while (if they haven't already) which would be reasonable if not a bit late...

A lot of high skilled labourers will see mass unemployment from places like aeronautics and security industries as money dries up. These issues will probably funnel down to lower skilled jobs too as higher skilled labourers like engineers may move to more application based roles (ie an engineer may become a freelance electrician to try to keep getting an income and take some clients off another one in the same area)... I don't think high skilled people have as much of a problem finding jobs as lower skilled employees will still - even if they cost more to take on. Consumer electronics could also see a spike as aeronautics dips and scholars can probably just go elsewhere (especially for science - Europe, Asia and Australia are pretty good choices afaik)... There looks to have been a massive dip in PhD opportunities everywhere this year though.
