With all due respect to Guy, this will never work for a simple reason that there is absolutely NO incentive to EVER use mining contracts vs buying bitcoin outright (in OECD countries). With the price of bitcoin approaching the cost of production for marginal players, all profit of such contract will be retained by the cloud mining company. I looked at every single cloud mining operation, and basically it is just a license to lose money (for buyers of such contracts, of course).

In theory, cloud mining has to prove that buying such mining contract will result in the GUARANTEED lower price per BTC acquired than could be obtained by buying bitcoin on the open market. However, such proof does not exist at the moment and is unlikely to exist in the future as well. Case closed.

People say the exact same thing about buying miners and have been saying it since GPU mining. Cloud miners have lower up front costs involved due to not needing to ship all around the world and they generally have cheap electricity decreasing running costs. In that scenario, if cloud mining is unprofitable, then buying miners is even less profitable for the majority of people.

Cloud mining will attract a different breed of people than mining with physical hardware. Cloud miners will be less hardcore and more likely to jump ship at the first whiff of unprofitability. They would probably have no notion of the concept behind p2pool and would have no qualms about pointing their hashes at the most profitable pool even if it were the largest pool with over 51% of the overall hashrate.

While I agree with you about cloud mining and I think it is bad for the industry it looks like it is the same as the weather .

We can talk about it as much as we want but we can't change it.

GO GO GO DIFFICULTY GO ...... down!!!

nice one I am on board with this!

Grin and as well as we need the prices of BTC to go UP UP UP!!!

Honestly seems too low at the moment ... not trying to go to deep on price speculation in this thread but just my opinion.

Although surely everyone wants the prices to be as HIGH as possible Tongue

If we strung/or averaged   -1% from now until my birth day in late Jan.  the price could stay at 350 usd.

40644  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How to change the Hardware miner SHA 256 to scrypt Algorithm on: November 26, 2014, 04:22:05 AM
Sorry in advance if this question does not make sense.

Antminer s3 + = OS Linux version 3:10:12 (XXL @ ubuntu)
Dropbear SSH include.

The question? :
What can we replace Antminer s3 + of the SHA256 algorithm into scrypt Algorithm, (using software CGminer instalation)

thanks a lot Kiss

good luck with that.

It would be interesting to see if you could do that.   but lets say you do.    a gpu that would do 600mh for btc would do 500 kh for ltc

so for the sale of argument   lets say you get the s-3 to do 380mh that pulls 350 watts

one 250 usd  antminer would make 750 dollar profit in 90 days.     no one in there right mind would let anyone know they are reprograming the s-3 into a ltc miner.. not when they can make a 750 usd profit on each and every s-3 they have.

40646  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: - negative diff hike - on: November 26, 2014, 04:06:47 AM
well the diff. went to -10, cold season + dropping of difficulty. A nice season it is Smiley

this is a big point for me.

the   winter power cost drops from 16 cents to 13 cents.

saving on the heat drops me to 10 cents.  At 10 cents my 5.6th uses 4k and will make 575 a month

in the summer 313 a month.

but there were times last year I was making 2k a month mostly nov dec jan 2013-2014.

unless we see a decent price jump mining may end for my tis spring.  these  -1 and -2 diff jumps or drops will help for a bit. but I can't see me mining past may 1 - july 1 of 2015

and I have sp20's and s-3's I am doing just under .7 watts for all of my gear combined
40647  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: November 25, 2014, 10:38:41 PM
I got 2 new antminers today and they have the latest firm ware. this inlcudes under clock freq and under volt numbers . has any one been able to get the undervolts numbers to work.  I keep dropping the undervolt and don't seem to use less watts.
40648  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: November 25, 2014, 09:45:04 PM
Great writeup Phil.  Having owned an SP10, and dealing with the ear-piercing scream it put out, how do the fans on the SP20 compare in pitch to those fans?  I don't mind something a little loud as long as it isn't that awful screeching whine.  Don't suppose you could grab a quick audio clip of the fans at a few different speeds and post it could you?

They are just as loud, but personally speaking the pitch on the fans is much more tolerable than the SP10.
Thanks Bob.  Like I wrote, loud is OK as long as it's not screeching.  The miners are in the basement.  With the SP10, I could hear that thing throughout the house, even with the fans on their lowest settings.  I had an S2 and couldn't hear it.  I've currently got 8 S3s and can't hear them either.

You'll hear the SP20

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdkCxfn6W0c

Don't get me wrong, I think its one of the best miners out there and I'm probably going to get another one soon, but don't think that its quiet like an S3 or a Jupiter.
What level was the fan in that video, 80%?  Definitely not anywhere near what the SP10 was.  Loud, but low-pitched enough that I wouldn't hear it from the basement.  Thanks for sharing that video Biffa!

Yes 80%

Heres one with the replacement Scythe Ultra Kaze fan: http://youtu.be/ddyps5nf9LA
yeah that is a lot better then 40 or 50 setting. I can get away with it as it is in my garage but if you have an apartment not a home the sp20e is loud.

gotta say what a nice piece of gear compared to the asicminer prisma.

comparing this to the newest ant miner s-3+ that has voltage and freq settings is tough.  you can argue a lot of ways as to what is better.

since the sp20e uses 1 ethernet wire cost shipped to the usa is about 910 usd power settings allow for 750 watts and 1350 gh fans is loud.

the s-3  4 of them cost  1034 usd you can set them to do 4x 450 = 1800gh and 1350 watts.

both are under clock under vote options.

if you have a lot of room and cheap power the s-3 may be your choice.

if you are tight on space and power costs more the sp20e is better.

a blend of the two may be better for some.

I think these two are the best gear around.

s-4's and or sp30's have never entered my testing space. so tough to say what I think of them.

as a 2.5 year miner my choice today is an s-3/ sp20e mix.
40649  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: November 25, 2014, 07:02:27 PM

Thanks. I am a bit overwhelmed at the moment with everything so I was surely gonna miss that.

Look at the SP20 for example. At 1152 W, you'd have the following costs for electricity:

I stopped reading your post here because:

so far the  sp20 has done 747 watts and 1353gh on under clock

Miners have the advantage of being able to underclock their gear depending on market movements as opposed to cloud mining so please go and count your recently div satoshis. It will be a better use of your time.

many people don't understand the many pluses of home mining, but as time goes on and the network grows we will get squeezed out due to power limits.
40650  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: November 25, 2014, 05:28:52 PM
still looking for the db meter.  getting too much gear in the house.

I am running 10 s-3's  and 1 sp20e

I have 9 s-3's in the garage near the work bench and I have the sp20e

Figures I set the gear all up and temps jumped to 74f .  making the attached garage 92f and making the house 85f had to shut gear off over night to be able to sleep.

Today is cooler around 62 f house and garage are both better.

 I will photo setup.

@ sbogovac    raskul was helpful in selling it to me.

@ raskul    thanks.  and I am send some more hash at mmpool

3 s-3's and 1  sp20

they stack well and air is feeding out my garage's back door 2 quality psu's the egva 1300 g2 and a seasonic 1200 watt plat.

my garage can safely do 5k watts I have 5 20 amp 120 volt  circuits  into it.  when i am running all 10 s-3's and the  1 sp20 I am at 4.kwatts

for now the issue is heat since it is about 57f the garage is warm but my entire home is also warm.  So realistically  I am close to max. my hashrate is 5.5th .

 I could fit 2 more s-3's or try to arrange a few more sp20's .  my 10 s-3  to 1 sp20  =  5.4th 4kwatts

should be  5 s-3's  to 3 sp20's  = 6.5th same 4 kwatts.

3 more s-3s'  they are above the fist photo

Woooooooooooooohaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

 Cheesy   Cheesy  Cheesy

Thank the gods that's over.

Well done everyone for sticking it out.

 Cheesy

better yet 6 confirms

now to all those happy ones.  I will mention a pool a while back had  .99 and .99 cdf back to back.

So our .98 while brutal  could be followed by a few .91's in a row.  Or we can rip 3   0.11's

Anyone that has trouble grasping this  get a pair of dice.  Toss them over and over for 360 tosses.   mark only snake eyes.   you will find interesting patterns .  you should get 10 sets of snake eyes in 360 tosses.   1 set around every 36 tosses.  you will find you may vary far from that.

this round of shit luck would be like tossing 150 times before snake eyes turns up
40652  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: November 25, 2014, 03:38:39 PM
excellent post Mr Ph.
I have 2 S3's and 1 SP20 on it's way, I may just go with getting another SP20 (if mmpool ever finds this block!) and do the same as you have done. I've got 1 x AX1200i and 1 x EVGA 1600 80+ so it looks as though I should be able to replicate your setup.

looks like SP-Tech have delivered on their expectations once again  Wink

yeah looks like east meets west is a match in heaven.  the newest s-3+ has volts and freq control the sp20e has the same. pairing them on the evga 1300 g2 has me fairly happy about extending the mining time with the gear.

My goal is to continue to tweak the two.  I know evga 1300 will put out 1200 watts day in and day out.

I am hoping to see if the settings of the two will give me 1900gh on 1150 watts.

Guys, do you plan to open cloud mining service?

Please god no.

Going by what has evolved in the rest of the 'cloud mining' market...

i agree. They should stick with building and selling hardware, it's what SP-Tech are good at.

the only worth while cloud is renting and point it were you want.  nicehash + westhash  and a few other companies come to mind.  standard cloud mining is meh at best.
40654  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: November 25, 2014, 01:32:10 PM
Good price and good power consumption of SP20 - imho it's better then S4 and Prisma
Guys, do you plan to open cloud mining service or own hosting service? I had bad experience with one of you hosting-partners, so don't want to repeat a mistake. Shipping fees and electricity price make me sad Sad

it is way better then the prisma .

the best i got my prisma to do on under clock was 1000 watts and 1300gh

so far the  sp20 has done 747 watts and 1353gh on under clock

if you do the underclock and set fan to 40 it is not as noisy as the prisma.

40656  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: November 25, 2014, 04:21:08 AM
okay I add an s-3+ newest version it also arrived today.

the sp20 = 1323 gh  1)fan set to 40 2)volts to .62 3) watts to 175   = all low settings

the s-3+ =   430 gh 1) freq set to 212.5   and  2) new option volts I set to 0.68  also lower then stock.

total gh     = 1753
total watts = 1035 to 1055    That is well under the evga 1300 g2's limits   it comes to  .59 watts to .60 watts combining both pieces

you get max value on the evga  .  my guess is I can go higher but with the unusual warm weather I will have to wait until weds to try over clocks.

VERY HAPPY WITH THESE RESULTS.

size is close the sp20 is longer leaner.

both units under-clocked it starts at about 1035 watts on this meter and 1055 on my other meter

pretty small foot print and you can also stack

40657  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: November 25, 2014, 04:07:01 AM
Is there anyway to cut the fan speed to less than 40?  I plan on under clocking and am interested in reducing noise.

edit /etc/mg_custom_rate via ssh

looks like this is a new file

miner-FL1444045011# ls mg* -1
mg_custom_mode
mg_custom_mode_sp20
mg_custom_mode_sp30
mg_disabled_asics
mg_disabled_asics_sp20
mg_disabled_asics_sp30
mg_generic_psu
mg_psu_limit
mg_try_12v_fix
mg_work_mode
miner-FL1444045011#

What is the format to include the 30% fan rate?

My bad. Check mg_custom_mode. It's human readable.

Edit:
Just note that under very low fan settings you might stress the back side of the miner and it can cause termal shutdown.  Theoretically it should work since the system scales on both dc2dc and asic temperature. be careful when touching the back side of the miner - it can become very hot

do you mean this set of numbers?

Temp Front / Back T,B
38 °C / [b/74,71 °C[/b]

if so what is low enough?

right now my room temps are very high due to 74f temps in Howell NJ USA
40658  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: November 25, 2014, 03:04:35 AM
I have now set 1 sp20 and 1 antminer s-3  one 1 evga 1300 g2

pulling 1043 watts for the two units 426 gh for the s-3 and 1322 for the sp20   so 1043 watts gives me 1748 gh .

I was thinking 1152 watts and 1650-1700 gh using an evga 1600 p2

this is much better.
40659  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: November 25, 2014, 01:20:30 AM
Is it really 60+ db?
not under clocked see my settings above

I spend 746 watts and I am getting  1350 gh  or 0.55 watts per gh this allows the lowest fan setting  40..   give me an hour to find my db meter.

right now I love this piece of gear……….. 746 watts for 1350gh   out fucking standing.

That is pretty damn good my friend.

Yes it is, but it actually matters most at the "final stretch" of the miner lifecycle.
Unless it is a hobby, which it IS admittedly for most of us at current BTC prices, then don't you want to try to produce as much as possible as soon as possible?

I would and I will but with my sp20 using 746 watts from an evga 1300g2 if I add an antminer s-3 clocked to freq 243 or 250 it will do  490-500gh

 and burn 380 -390 watts.

thus the evga 1300 g2 will do 746+ 390 = 1136 watts and give me 1350 + 490 = 1840 gh

grand totals of 1136 /1840 = .61 watts a gh.   and only 1 psu  and I can manage sound levels

to do max hash for both units. I need a second psu .

I could come close to 2150 gh vs 1840 gh  but the extra 300 gh would cost 1 more psu and close to 450 more watts.

with current prices for power and btc I am better off with underclocking.

don't have a smart phone I am stubborn about it.  still looking for the metere.

at fan setting of 40 the gear is about = to an s-3

at fan setting of 80 the gear is about = to the asicminer prisma.

frankly for me I have to do settings of 40 or 50.  as an aside it got to 74f in New Jersey today.  My wife and I went to walk on the boardwalk at the Jersey shore which is nice.   But my house is hot really hot right now 84 F

I expect my numbers to improve on the sp20 once it cools back off on weds.

nice numbers for the btcguild  over 1400  for now it will be under clock maybe on black friday I will see if  over clock works well

40660  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: November 25, 2014, 12:53:26 AM
Is it really 60+ db?
not under clocked see my settings above

after much testing and firmware down to fan speed of 20 the machine is 67 db.

with super underclock to 1025 gh and 477 watts.  fan can be set to 10 or 15 vis ssh.  It is still not a quiet miner.

I spend 746 watts and I am getting  1350 gh  or 0.55 watts per gh this allows the lowest fan setting  40..   give me an hour to find my db meter.
