How is the performance in a moderate temperature environment?

eg  -6 to +6 deg C

It improves slightly, and  it does not like a 35c room it does a little worse.

I keep my noisy miners in an outdoor shed. Are you saying i will get better than the advertised 1700ghs at 0deg C ?

If so, thats great. any way to get group buy price without rewarding RS? Not interested in supporting people or companies that feel the need to troll others` threads to promote their own products, that behavior reeks of insecurity about something.....

looking for about 16 new miners

no above 1650 is redlining the miners.  and it burns a ton of power.  efficiency drops like a rock.  If you have them in a good room and you have cheap power

run around 1500gh  check power draw. then try 1550gh check power draw. then try 1600gh check power draw.  decide if adding 50 or 100gh is wroth the extra watts.

Hint it really is not for almost all of us.
40902  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Bitmain Antminer S5 - A wonderfully modable and well performing miner on: January 02, 2015, 12:18:54 PM
Great review!
Care to mention what fans did you use. One looks like Cooler master, but which model?
In addition, how do you power them up. It looks like you don't power them off the miner connector itself.
Using a Thermaltake for push, and an Antec for pull (the Thermaltake fans rub up against the mounting screws when used for pull).

The Thermaltake fan has an adjustable RPM knob, and the Antec is a 3 speed adjustable fan.

Powering them via Molex adapters - Not connected to the S5 controller at all.

Antec pull fan : http://www.amazon.com/Antec-TriCool-LED-Cooling-3-Speed/dp/B00066FHEW/
Thermaltake push fan : http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Blue-Eye-Adjustable-Control-AF0026/dp/B003IWN23O/

Thanks for this Xian01.  We have had similar mining hobby tracks and I have always kept an eye on your posts for up to date info.
I ordered 4 of these but given the noise I'm sending two into my datacenter cabinet and will play with the other two in my office.  I ordered two of each of your fan recommendations.  I love philipma1957's tinkering, but trying to pull the best single solution out his review is challenging.
I am glad to hear from everyone that the first batch appears solid from a performance spec standpoint.  I'm in batch three and hoping for an ontime ship date of 1/4.

I agree with you the review got too long and has more then 25 pages of info.
I am going to lock it over the weekend.
Frankly I am still not happy with any set of fans I have used.

these come on monday I suspect they will be the best fix.

Thanks for this

Will the EVGA 1300w work for this or is it too close to being maxed out all the time

It will work fine.    do you realize the sp20 works far better at 1200gh to 1400gh hash rates?

If you run at 1350gh it costs 750 to 800 watts

If you run at 1650gh it costs 1200 to 1225 watts

Even if you are a free power guy.  try running them at 1400 to 1500gh  as  the 1650 to 1700gh speeds are redline speeds.

I run 8 of them in my home all around 1200gh. They use under 600 watts at this speed.
40905  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: January 02, 2015, 03:56:18 AM
I acknowledge this is an extremely stupid question, but its so stupid, I'm wondering if I'm just missing something or have just been drinking too much watching New Years college football.

A PSU like the EVGA 1300W SuperNova G2 has 8 - 8 pin ports (listed as VGA & CPU) and 6 - 6 pin ports (listed as SATA & RERP).  I understand the S5 needs 4 - 6 pin connectors as does the SP20.

So how does the math work here?  For the SP20, you just use the 4 SATA ports and you've maxed out the power.  But with you've got enough power for 2x S5s but only 6 - 6 pin connectors?

that unit above can not do what I wrote below.. you need to repair it.  btw it was most likely melted by using the 2 head pcie cable incorrectly. thus pulling too much power from that plug.

on the s-5 if you plug the two heads on the double cable into one board.  a board pulls 300 watts.  and you melt the plug.

okay I am a bit buzzed but here goes

the s-5 has a pair of pcie jacks. on the left board

it has a pair of pcie jacks on the right board

at freq  350 the unit pulls 600 watts.

each board pulls 300 watts

(shame shame shame on you for bringing up anything but pcie cables> buzzed humor at its worst)

so take 1 pcie cable  color red plug it into a red pcie jack on the evga plug it into the left board. (use a single red pcie cable)

so take 1 pcie cable color red plug it into a red pcie jack on the evga plug it into the right board (use a single plug pcie cable)

now take  a double  plug pcie cable.  plug the single end into the psu. then plug the double plug into the left and right boards of the s-5

so three cables plug into the psu pcie jacks and  feed into the s-5.  if you do it the way I say the s-5's power is divided to the  three cables equally.  since 1 s-5 pulls 600 watts each cable is doing 200 watts.

run the 1 s-5 at stock 350 freq feel the cables a few times all should be okay since the cable are load balanced correctly.

then do the other 3 cable the same wat to the s-5.  the evga 1300 g2 will be doing about 1215 watts at a kwatt meter.  and each cable will pull about 200 watts.

I am a bit buzzed so test this very carefully . and check it every hour or so  for the first 6 hours at least.

something in me wants to see +20% diff and btc under 300$ Roll Eyes

The way bitcoinwisdom calculates the estimate is quite odd. It's almost always completely wrong within the first week. I think they are just taking the timing of the last 2016 blocks, which in this case includes the quick blocks achieved at the previous diff. And to be fair it's impossible to predict anything this early in the cycle.

I'd wait at least until about 1500 blocks remaining, then look at the 504-block average, that typically gives a better indication of where this might be going.

Either way it's safe to say its a positive not negative change.  Some numbers look not so great on change.  We will see hopefully not the 10+ percentage.

amen to under 10+..
40907  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S5 Batch 1 Unboxing :) on: January 02, 2015, 03:08:19 AM
mine has been stable with fan mods and underclock to 325. in a fairly cool room.
Testing out a theory that board temps <60C is required for stable performance.

Have mine overclocked to 375 and running @ 55-58C for about 6 hours now with no problems.

Tinkering and testing continues...

yeah if you use the stock fan as a push and add a loud fast  pull fan you can do  387 to 406. staying close to 60c in a cool room

 Insanely loud close to 78db.

which means testing overclocks  while the wife takes a shower so I don't have her complain about the noise.

If you have a cold place and loudness is not an issue the stock will run close to 4000rpm add a fast delta as a pull and good over clocks will work.

I used the stock to push running at 4000 rpm the 3 pin 148 cfm delta to pull at 3000 rpm.  this setup could do 406 freq in a fairly cool room.  If you had a cold room I think the unit could clock to 412-425.
40908  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S5 Batch 1 Unboxing :) on: January 02, 2015, 01:46:30 AM

Overnight, one of the blades curiously went xxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxo running at stock 350 with the temps at 63C. Rebooted and it's working OK again.

Hmmm.....I got back from New Years Eve celebrations earlier and noticed the same thing with mine, but all X's. They all came back after a reboot also, but it is a little worrying..... Tongue  Anyone else had this?

EDIT: Also at stock freq with temps @ 65.

Loud fans and now this... Waiting on my S5 to show up but someday I will learn not to order from the first couple of batches like I did this time and in the past.

mine has been stable with fan mods and underclock to 325. in a fairly cool room.
40909  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S3 Fan Speed on: January 01, 2015, 11:23:51 PM
Happy New Year All.

Despite living in a cold room here in England my anminer is insistent of mostly spinning the fans at 1680rpm. Temps are fine, 40/38 never higher. Frequency is kept stock at 225 but the noise is so loud from the fans. Is there a way to spin them down to perhaps 1260ish - it seems possible as they perhaps do this maybe briefly one an hour. I thought about maybe underclocking the unit? Played around in the terminal but couldnt find and fan settings etc.

Any bright ideas?

 Huh

http://www.directron.com/zmmc1.html?gsear=1  connect this to your psu  then connect it to your fans it should run the fans at 5 voltt

they have  a   4.52% jump   so 6 or 7 is in the middle.  I would love to see a solid drop in price to 175usd  this would scare the shit out of the big miners the dc's even make knc and bitfury sweat.

Thx guys, one cable end is fried, other 3 are slightly scorched.

shes running slightly better with offending cable removed, but the melted shroud is stuck inside the sp20 connector so i cant plug in another cable...

will have a proper fiddle later - 0230 here.

confusing as psu was pulling <900w while previously running MUCH higher watts without issue. (>1150w)

i'll upload pic in a minute.  meh. you all know what scorched connectors look like

the melt was on the sp20 end?

I sometimes see my last loops run higher watts.  your last loop burned?

let me show an example of what I mean  the last loop pulls 165 or so the first 3 pull 135 or so.  I get 1180gh but the high last loop does show on most of my 8 sp20's

does it here also

40913  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: January 01, 2015, 07:17:12 PM
I am going to lock this thread and lock my sp20 review thread maybe on monday.

I am going to sell this to a forum member that lives a few miles from me along with a sp20.

I am done testing it and will give it to him with the stock fan on the side.

I will install my delta 3 pin and run that .  it is louder then the noctua - silverstone in use, but it cools better.

I have the 4 pin deltas coming to my house  on monday.

I will give him a pair and ask him to test them.

I would buy these if I needed miners. (I have 8 sp20's)

I may buy 2 of these in a bit if the price drops.

My home is suited to run 7 to 9 sp20's and 1-3 s-5's.

If you are an established miner that has used s-1's or s-3's and you want to upgrade I suggest
2 s-5's and 2 sp20's.  I think that would be 900 for a pair of s-5's shipped to the usa and 1020 for a pair of sp20's shipped to the usa.

To bitmaintech thank you for the miner  and it was a pretty good miner,  but better fans would have been smarter for you to do.

532 watts 1073 gh  = .496 per gh

clock at 325
push noctua 2640 rpm  pull silverstone  1800 rpm.--quiet

 a little bit warm.
hw's good

40914  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3+ Discussion and Support Thread 0.26$/G Free Ocean Shipping on: January 01, 2015, 06:56:23 PM
Dogie. Why are the fans on the S3+ so loud when Bitmain markets them as quiet miners? It seems like a little more money could be spent on getting a high efficiency fan that runs quieter so we don't have to go buy aftermarket fans to replace the stock fans on the S3+ units. Bitmain needs to start considering things like this and provide a better quality product for the end users.

the s-3 fans are quiet compared to the stock s-1 or the stock s-5

just downclock the  s-3 to hash at 425gh and they work fine.  I have 2 in my friends office batch 1 been running them since july 22 2014.

If you want to complain about s-3's you can  but they are way better then the s-5
40915  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: January 01, 2015, 06:50:07 PM
your cable on the psu may be bad

your psu can't provide all the power needed to mine.

it looks like you have 3 good cables doing 315gh each

1 cable with no power doing zip.

your watt settings are 215 a  board   what psu do you use?

check cables.

try clocking lower if cables are good.
40916  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Dec 29 to Approx Jan 12th diff thread (4%) to (7%) on: January 01, 2015, 05:05:42 PM
I say with Bitmain whole selling "used" S3's at 500 units a batch it tells me they have switched out their farm of S3's to either S5's or maybe something even newer ?? Not sure how many batches of 500 they have to sell but each equals @250TH/s which if they switch out to S5's they pretty much double their hash rate.

Edit: I do know they will let a person order up to 2000 units per order.

yeah and if you can run 250 th at 6 cents a kwatt it could make sense to buy them.  they do .8 watts  a gh or 800 watts a th

so 250 x 800 = 200kwatts

cost for them is about 65000 add psu's building etc 20000 = 85000

and after 1 year the 85000 = 92000 you make 7 k

40918  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Better Luck? on: January 01, 2015, 01:17:01 PM
Since this is a pool for solo miners, I would assume that you would have better luck here then if you truly solo mined. Is this true? My thought was because the work is split between all the workers instead of all of use doing the same work.

No.  The only benefit of this pool is that it is well connected to other nodes and you can check your hashrate online.

How about you save power because you just run a miner and don't run a server for the blockchain as a very important benefit?

I point a sp20 here. No muss no fuss.  I would need to run a server 24/7/365 with a decent net connection certainly costs more for me if I solo mine at home using a  PC to run the blockchain.

@ Ck what type of server can be used?  What does it cost to build?  I know that running a weak pc won't cut it.  Not sure how good the physical  server needs to be.

40920  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: January 01, 2015, 06:34:42 AM
For those looking at aftermarket fans, the Silverstone isn't the only 140mm fan with 120mm fan holes (although it's the only one 38mm thick and probably the best), there are a few others.  Those will move more air at a lower RPM causing less noise.  One thing you may need with some aftermarket fans though that I've learned is that the screws sticking out of the front and back can cause interference with the blades, so something like these can help.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NODDHLY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here are a few of the fans I've found.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q8RLCBU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  shipped from China so they haven't arrived yet.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0078IWS6Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  white LED and good airflow but not as quiet as others.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B1WQ4VA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 if you happen to need a shorter fan, not high airflow but pretty quiet.  Optional Static Booster:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HRJ550W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  which makes it as thick as a typical one so this option isn't really useful.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G8GUE74/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  Similar to the Prolimatech above but spins a little faster.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835856013&cm_re=140mm_fan_120mm-_-35-856-013-_-Product  Quiet but not a lot of airflow.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835856015&cm_re=140mm_fan_120mm-_-35-856-015-_-Product  Same as above.

Some of these are right up to the bottom of the network port on AntMiners, so you should use network cables without boots / connector sleeves like these:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E5I7VJQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Or you may have to shave a bit off the fan frame.

yeah it will be a guessing game to get the correct   fan/price/sound/cfm   frankly bitmain had them before us and could have done some more sound tests.  the stock fan has no marks.  it moves a ton of air (150 cfm or more)    but runs at 3600 to 3800 rpm.  it is fine in a garage not attached. or I guess use a speed controller on it.

push noctua is 2700 rpm pull silverstone is 1900 rpm -  not quite cool as I would like. considering I am letting outside air at -5c into the room via the window,  but 381 freq is giving 1250 gh at 621 watts plus powering the 2 fans. Sound is really good. cost is too high 24 + 16 = 40 and it went up  to 24+20 = 44

HW's are decent.  Would I run this setup 24/7/365  yeah if I was running 1 or 2 s-5's   but if I had 20 or 30 no.  I think I am just a bit too hot see below.
