1 modules = 8
2 modules = 16
3 modules = 24
4 modules = 32

Yeah, that makes more sense. I wonder why my 2 module units are set to 24? I wonder if I should try setting them to 16 to see if they behave any different. The reason I ask is because when my now 4 module Avalon was set to 24 it would only hash in the MH range. Never would reach a singe GH.

Thanks for posting that.

Anyone know the tweaks needed for what would be a 4 module Avalon?

Nevermind, found it.

Change the number of miners from 24 (for a 2 module unit) to 32 (for a 4 module unit) and restart CGMiner.

120+GH's now.  Cheesy
423  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 11, 2013, 09:23:57 PM

You need to stop confusing the working Avalon's with the non-working. That's now how to you do basic troubleshooting.
1. Is the Avalon that is having the problem setup on static IP or is it getting's its IP through DHCP? You can only be using one of them...
2. When you plug your PC into the network to test it are you plugging it into the same network cable you have plugged your Avalon at it's new location?

You can only SSH into the Avalon but you have to make sure SSH is enabled.

Oh trust me, I'm not confused by the working/not working Avalons. I know I want to take a hammer to the one that doesnt work! LOL!

1. Right now, its static. Its been DHCP as well but that did not change the fact that it wont hash. For the record, I know it can only be one or the other.
2. Yes, same cable plugged into my laptop (pulled out of the port on the Avalon) and it works fine. Yes, at its new location. (up a 10 foot ladder thank you very much  Cheesy )

So... From my 30+ years of troubleshooting (albeit a completely different industry) I've deduced that there is something wrong with the network controller on the Avalon that wont connect. Since my other 3 are working I decided to give something a shot.

I unplugged the ribbon cables from the FPGA controller board in the BA (Bad Avalon) and plugged them into one of my GA's (Good Avalon). I also moved the fan connector from the BA to the controller in the GA. Obviously the temp sensors cant be fooled with but these units "should" heat up about the same so the GA should be able to keep the modules in the BA cooled down. The power supply from the BA is supplying current to the 2 hashing modules so theres no crazy load on the other units supply.

I think I have some tweaking yet to do in CGMiners setup as I'm not getting the 120ish GH's that I should be getting from 4 modules clocked at 375. FWIW when the BA was working I was getting right around 63GH's out of it.

Anyone know the tweaks needed for what would be a 4 module Avalon?

When you connect your PC into the Avalon, are you giving your PC an IP address on the same subnet that your Avalon had?

Did you initially set up your Avalon on a DHCP or static IP address?

When you plug your PC into the wall were your Avalon will plug into in the new spot can you get onto the internet and surf websites?

I'll answer as I was asked.

Yes, the Avalon and the PC are on the same subnet. PC's address is 192.168.1.xxx and the Avalon is 192.168.1.206.

I've tried to configure the Avalon in both Static and DHCP. When in DHCP it moves to 192.168.1.12 (I made a copy of the MAC address so I could follow it though my router if it moved).

Yes, the PC can browse the internet just fine. There are three other Avalons that are connected to the same hub/switch as this one. They all work as advertised. I even tried moving network cables and ports on the switch and only this Avalon fails.

I think my bigger issue now is that CGMiner is missing from the Avalon in question. Or at least it looks like it is.

Anyone know how to telnet into these things? Is that even possible?
425  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 11, 2013, 07:20:34 PM

Are you connecting to the same network after you move it? Are you connecting my LAN or Wifi?

Yup, same network. Same Ethernet cable too. Its on LAN.

But, this has taken an interesting turn (for the worst I'm thinking).

When connected to the Avalon via a Win7 PC if I click on the CGMiner configuration screen I get an page not available error instead of the cfg screen (it was there this morning).

Also, in startup services CGMiner is no longer there.

This thing is possessed! I've already tried re flashing the firmware and that changed nothing.

My other three avalons are working fine. This one just doesnt want to go...  Huh

I'm still fighting with this one Avalon unit that I dont dare power cycle.  Angry

Well, I tried to move it today. It had been mining for the last two days without any issues. I move it to its new home, and it wont connect and start mining. I can connect to it via the web browser but it keeps giving me the "connection refused" error.

Any clues? This thing is pissin me off.

Thanks!  Grin

The only real way you are going to cool the mini's is to stick them outside or close to a window if you live in the north, or put them in a freezer like a walk in one because there is very little room inside a mini to add things to make water cooling or anything fancy work.

Theres always the possibility of removing the hardware from the Avalon enclosure and putting them into something else. He's going to look at them next week and see what he can come up with.
428  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 09, 2013, 09:27:24 PM
Now that these things have been up for about 12 hours I've got some more data.

On the first one I unboxed, I opened it up and found all those screws that needed to be snugged on the heat spreaders. Now, its the coolest one of the bunch and also has the highest hash rate. TEMP2 (which I'm guessing is on one of the boards or the heatsink) is 46C on this until and the others are all over 50C. Also, the fan speed on this one is around 2500 whereas the others are all at 3200 and higher. Hash rate on the miner I popped open is just south of 60GH's and the others are all hanging at closer to 57GH's. All four units are clocked to 375.

Seems to me that I need to bust open the other miners on Monday and tighten some screws.  Smiley

I've got a friend that is working on a exotic cooling solution for gaming rigs. He's going to look at one of my Avalons to see if he can come up with something for them. I'd love to see these things operate closer to 40C without added fan noise. FWIW, the room they are in is held at a constant 18C.

Stay tuned!

I'd be interested to see if this pans out as well.

Thanks for the post.
430  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 09, 2013, 09:18:51 AM
I dont know how, but I managed to set the password on one of my Avalons to something other than what I told it to use. Is there a way to reset these things to factory? Its hashing away so I kinda dont want to mess with it (if its not broken, dont fix it) but I would like to get into it from time to time.

Also, of the 4 I received I opened one of them up (I'm the curious type). ALL of the screws on the heat spreaders were at least a full turn from tight (tight, not engine block torqued), ALL OF THEM. I'm going to open the others up later and see what they look like as well. FWIW, On the one I opened the temps are a few degrees higher but the fan speed is half of one that I have not opened. Its also backed into a corner by another Avalon so maybe ambient heat has something to do with the temp difference.
431  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 09, 2013, 04:11:53 AM
Setting the "second" one to DHCP fixed it. Whatever... So long as its hashing I guess thats all I really care about.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.
432  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 09, 2013, 02:21:21 AM
No such luck with the second one. Still getting the "connection refused" error.

I'm moving onto the 4th of 4. If I can get this one going I will have 3 of 4 working.
433  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 09, 2013, 01:56:47 AM
FWIW, flashing one of the Avalon's with the new firmware got it up and running. I'm working on flashing the second one now.
434  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 08, 2013, 11:19:32 PM
Are you new to mining and Avalons? It kind of sounds like you are.

You should connect to your Avalon's and assign a static IP within your own network and make sure you assign the correct Gateway IP and DNS (usually it's 8.8.8.Cool otherwise they won't hash.

As soon as you log into your Avalon go to the CGminer Status link and you'll see the Firmware revision number.

A good firmware to get is from CK it ends in 0821

Yes, I am new to mining with Avalons. I did connect to the avalon and assign it a static IP and it did work for about 20 minutes. I unplugged it an literally moved it 2 feet and plugged it back in (same network cable and power cord) and it wouldn't reconnect and mine. I could still however get to its web based browser from another computer in the building so I know its connected to the internet.

Thanks for the info about the firmware, I still dont get WHICH file I'm supposed to download to update it. Its currently running 20130723.
435  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: November 08, 2013, 10:18:33 PM
Are you sure you have your worker setup at the pool and it matches with worker name and password in cgminer? If not you can get the issue you refer to.

I'm positive. It was mining for about 20 minutes then I decided to move it. Nothing since then and none of the settings have been changed. I've power cycled it dozens of times and it doesnt help.

I'm going to take 2 of them home and fool with them over the weekend. I hope to find a simple solution and will post it in this thread if I figure it out.

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep em coming. Smiley

Hey all.

I've totally managed to confuse myself. I just received 4 60gh avalons and I cant get them to mine. I had one of them running just fine but then I unplugged it to move it to its final location and it wont mine now. I'm getting "connection refused" in the cgminer status page.

I'm assuming this might mean I need to update the firmware but I dont know which file to chose and I really done want to brick any of these things.

They were purchased from Avalon 2 weeks ago so I would assume that the firmware is relatively new, no?

Maybe I'm missing something?? I've read this thread (various pages) but am not seeing any help.

Any ideas?

Thanks all!

its not online. get it off wifi and put it on lan to save you some reliability.

I've got both of them on the LAN. I dont have wi-fi in the building.

I can reach them via the browser so I know I have that part set right.

How do I...

1, figure out what firmware they are running
2, pick from the huge list of files to update them if they need it? That firmware pages has dozens of files to choose from.

438  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I hate to ask such a dumb question on: November 05, 2013, 01:29:38 AM
thanks for all the replies guys.

I ended up figuring out what was wrong, it was/is the computer's USB ports. I plugged one of the Ztex into a laptop thats never been used for mining. Downloaded BFGminer and Zadig, changed the "unidentified device" driver to to WinUSB (or whatever it is), config'd BFGMiner (pool/user/pass/hardware to not use) and it worked.

This is a brand new board and virgin OS (Win7-64 SP1) install so its not like theres something there that shouldn't be. FWIW, the USB ports all work for block erupters, I had some sitting around so I plugged them in for the extra hashing power. They also seem to work for everything else I've plugged into them, just not Ztex.

Strange...

But, as I said, thanks for the replies!  Cheesy

But I'm at my wits end.

I've got 6 Ztex 1.15y boards and I cant get BFGminer or CGminer to see any of them. I've changed the driver using zadig what seems like 100's of times. Nothing ever seems to work.

I've looked for a FAQ or setup guide for these miners but I didnt find anything that helped.

Is there a simple point and click way to set these things up?

Win7-64..

Thanks all.
440  Other / Beginners & Help / Board newbie looking for help on: November 01, 2013, 04:42:26 AM
I recently bought some Ztex FPGA 1.15y boards from a member here (I saw the boards working so I know they work).

I setup a new computer to run these boards with. Virgin install of Win7-64 fully patched and what not. Obviously when I connected a miner to the computer windows didnt know what it was so I downloaded and installed the 2.08.30 ftdi vcp drivers. Windows found the board to be a "Ztex FPGA modules."

I'm trying to use BFGMiner (latest release) with these boards but I am having no luck at all. The mining software claims that there are no devices for mining and shuts down. I've tried various command line switches, some together and some by themselves. -G, -S all, -S auto, -T, -D -d.... NOTHING makes a difference.

I've searched all day for help with this and its driving me insane.

I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong.  Huh I've got another rig thats running some x6500's and when I plug one of these Ztex into it the miner is found and it works (but only ONE at a time, if I plug two in the other one is discovered but never start working).

Oh, I have changed the driver numerous times via Zadig. Bitstreams are present in the bitstream folder. I have also tried running as admin.

Thanks for the help!!
