421  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What cryptocurrency do you have the most faith in the long term? on: January 29, 2015, 01:06:26 PM
Bitcoin has no competition. Zero, none.

Listen to me for once. If you want to invest on stable coin go for bitcoin. All other coins will come and go. Some are very good but competition in crypto is not something you want..it'll kill all the good coins in coming future. Too many scams, too many shill accounts, too much fuds. Bitcoin has limited amount of those. It's the MOST difficult coin to miine and still values 1000x more than most crypto out there.

Invest in BTC you will never be disappointed.

Only problem with BTC is there is no innovation.

Its already a dinosaur before it even has got of the ground.

I don't agree with his point that Bitcoin should be the only coin in existence. Although I doubt the current situation of 1,000+ clonecoins is what Satoshi had in mind, he did recognize the validity of altcoins that serve a useful function when he contributed to the development of Namecoin - a decentralized DNS system independent of Bitcoin.

That being said, it would be unfair to categorize Bitcoin as a dinosaur either. There are plenty of new developments happening, e.g. sidechains and anonymous tech such as Zerocash. Then you also have projects like Counterparty, Mastercoin, and Colored Coins which aim to provide new features while building on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. The official GitHub repository is quite active too:

http://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/graphs/contributors

Feature-wise, Bitcoin is conservative by typical altcoin standards but this approach makes sense since there is a lot more money at stake. I have seen altcoins that tried to implement a feature unsuccessfully (e.g. LottoShares' lottery mechanism, Crypti's proof-of-time algorithm, etc.) and their market caps took huge hits when the technology failed. Furthermore, Bitcoin - being a generalized rather than a highly specialized coin, doesn't really rely on fancy features that would only appeal to particular niches and instead allocates this role to third parties who are given the ability to implement their ideas on top of the core protocol if the need arises.

I am surprised to see the number of people voting for NXT, NEM and XMR are actually much higher than those voting for BTC.

Personally, I don't find it too surprising. After all, this poll is located in the alternate cryptocurrencies section which most fans of Bitcoin would either tend to ignore apart from posting in the occasional thread or more likely completely avoid altogether.
422  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: CLAMS with an Electrum wallet? on: January 28, 2015, 02:58:01 AM
Thanks for the answers. Since my Internet is so poor* and the only laptop that can go online at all has a tiny hard drive, I decided to use Just-Dice to claim my CLAMs. It seems to have worked, and I can see 4.6 CLAMs sitting in my account.

*My computer is located far away from the router so I can access the Internet but it randomly disconnects whenever I try to push it. I have a wifi extender but I haven't gotten around to setting that up yet.
423  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Are BitShares PTS (aka. Protoshares) still worth anything? on: January 27, 2015, 09:26:08 PM
I've seen this coin slip down the coin market cap ratings from being in the top 10 a few months ago to 60th place today. This makes sense since the distribution of this coin is supposed to act as a "snapshot" for distributing new BitShares DACs such as BitShares X, Music, DNS, etc. Now that most of these DACs have been launched and distributed, the value of BitShares PTS has dropped. But are they still worth anything? Will there be more snapshots in the future? Will there be any new developments planned for this coin?
424  Economy / Gambling / Re: all these new poker sites popping up. on: January 27, 2015, 08:29:55 PM
if you trust sealswithclubs then youre already getting screwed. theres more collusion on there than anything. least there was when i played there. plus cashouts there are anywhere from 3 hours to 24 hours.

far as any other "new" poker site as long as you can withdraw and deposit without waiting for more than 1 confirmation theres not much harm in trying them out. just dont go nuts putting 100 btc on them. play small stakes and have some fun

I've never played there myself but according to this thread which rates popular gambling websites, it has the same trustworthiness and overall rating as PrimeDice.
425  Economy / Gambling / Why do ponzi games here end so quickly? on: January 27, 2015, 08:17:23 PM
After losing 0.02 BTC to ponzi games and reading some of the threads here, it seems that the ponzi games here end extremely quickly. A game that is designed to last a week such as WeeklyPonzi.com might only really last for an hour or so. It is common for those who deposited only a couple of hours after a game has started to not see any return at all. A game that is designed to last for 24 hours might only see those who deposited within the first 10-20 minutes make a profit.

Normal ponzi schemes aren't like this at all. They typically go on for days, weeks, and sometimes even years. Bernie Madoff's ponzi scheme lasted for almost two decades.

EDIT: Cryptory and pirateat40 were other ponzi schemes that lasted for several months/years.
426  Other / Off-topic / Re: If you had a time machine... on: January 26, 2015, 11:48:14 PM
What will you do if you had a time machine that could go to the past and the future. But you can only use it once. (ie. you can't take the time machine with you)?

Be sure not to end up in the past with notes printed in 2014... Cheesy

I'd stuff my pockets full of gridseeds and block erupters and go to 2009/2010 to mine bitcoins just like Satoshi and early adopters like Hal Finney did back then. Or just wait a few months and buy some coins like this guy who put in $27 and is now a millionaire. Then I'd wait for coblee to launch Litecoin and start mining that too with my gridseeds. Once it hits a few exchanges, I would put a few hundred dollars into it. Then I'd wait for BCNext to post the [ANN] thread for NXT and put 1 BTC into that too. I'd start cashing out my bitcoins and litecoins in late 2013 and wait six more months and then start cashing out my NXT.

Or I might go to the distant future where money is obsolete, immortality is invented, etc.
427  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: January 26, 2015, 08:50:11 PM
There is a new forum here http://auroraspjall.is/index.php

Looks good. Unfortunately, it didn't show up when I searched "auroracoin" or "auroracoin forum" on Google though. The link to the old forum is still the second result for the search query "auroracoin" and the official website still links to it too. This could be confusing for newbies.
428  Bitcoin / Electrum / Using the same seed for Electrum and Electrum LTC? on: January 26, 2015, 08:25:47 PM
Are there are security risks to using the same 12 word seed for Electrum (BTC) and Electrum LTC? What about other forks of Electrum such as Electrum-Doge? For example, I know that it's not a good idea to use the same passphrase for NXT and its clones since it is possible to execute an attack by analyzing the NXT clone's transaction and using it to force a transaction from NXT - resulting in the loss of NXT coins.

I know that I could just generate a new seed, but if it was possible to reuse the seed that I already have then that would be great since it would be one less thing to remember and potentially forget.
429  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to retire on $100,000 on: January 26, 2015, 09:01:39 AM
It's impossible to live on $100,000 and retire on it, for one thing you clearly haven't factored in inflation which would obviously destroy a good percentage of your wealth.

In the example I gave, your main source of income would be from the rental property. Obviously, the rental price would rise in proportion to inflation. The only other factor that would affect your net worth would be the value of the house that you live in. Fortunately, housing prices have typically risen at a rate above that of inflation.

...And? You can retire on $10,000 in some places, even $1,000 in others.

I don't think it's possible to retire on $1,000 or even $10,000 in any developed country in the Western world. Many people seem to think that you need a million dollars or more to retire hence why I made this thread. Virtually anyone living in even the most wealthy countries can retire after 3-5 years of saving money if they wanted to. It surprises me that most are unaware of this.

Your 3-5 years of saving aren't the same for everyone. Someone with a family isn't going to be able to save enough in that time to retire. People making minimum wage and barely getting by aren't going to do be able to do it. This not even getting into if $100k is enough which I don't think it is.

Yeah, my example was pretty much only for those living alone. You would need much more money per week if you have a wife and kids to support. People making minimum wage might need a bit longer to save the $100,000 but it should still be achievable within 3-5 years if they are living with their parents or <10 years if they are living alone.
430  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Qora | 100% POS | Assets | Names | Voting | Open Source on: January 26, 2015, 07:01:11 AM

Hi guys. is there any problem witk QORA servers?? I ve sent some qora to my poloniex account 2 days ago. But my qora balance still zero!!! What s the problem? will it solved soon?

Poloniex is having wallet issues (again). Until it's been fixed, I recommend using Bter instead.

Does anybody know if Qora is frozen on Polo?

Yeah, it's frozen:

Quote from: Poloniex
QORA deposits and withdrawals are down pending communications with the developer. Posted by busoni@poloniex at 2015-01-23 19:37:39

I have about 800,000 QORA frozen there. No deposits or withdrawals and all trading has been halted. Poloniex has always had problems with their Qora wallet since months ago. I tried making a withdrawal a couple of weeks ago and it failed although I was able to get my coins back into my account within hours by contacting support. Decided to use Bter instead which worked great.
431  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to retire on $100,000 on: January 26, 2015, 06:35:22 AM
No property tax?

You mean rates, right? That would fall under the "miscellaneous expenses" part. For two properties worth $50,000 each, you would pay about $3,000 in rates per year. The bill would be included in the rent so your tenant would pay the rates for your rental property leaving you to pay the rates for your other property (i.e. the one that you live in). So overall you would pay $1,500 per year or $30 per week for rates.

Dont be foolish. NO ONE can retire on 10K... Let alone 1K.

Actually, it might be possible to retire on $10,000 if you moved to a place like Uganda and lived in a mud hut. I don't think that's what he had in mind though. Grin

434  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Why didn't Satoshi Nakamoto use LaTeX? on: January 26, 2015, 03:51:48 AM
LaTeX is the standard typesetting system for scientific and technical papers. According to this conversation on Reddit, the Bitcoin whitepaper didn't use LaTeX but instead used OpenOffice.org.

435  Economy / Investor-based games / Re: This site legit? 120% return on: January 26, 2015, 03:40:11 AM
Just found this on youtube wanted to know your opinions before i invest

Already sent them 0.01

http://abitponzi.x10.bz/Ponzi.html

Obviously it's a ponzi. Seems to be hosted on a free subdomain too. Anything that promises a 120 percent return in eight hours is a ponzi. As for whether or not this ponzi will make you money, well that depends. Those who gamble in the early stages will likely make a profit (excluding the possibility that the site operator decides to run away with everyone's money instead). Everyone else will lose their money. This is true for all ponzis.
436  Other / Off-topic / Re: How smart are you ? could you solve my Cipher ? (0.1 BTC reward) on: January 26, 2015, 01:47:57 AM
Assumed it was a substitution cipher so I tried performing a frequency analysis on it. Didn't work although I can see some patterns.
437  Other / Off-topic / How to retire on $100,000 on: January 26, 2015, 01:26:30 AM
Most people would say that it's impossible to retire on just $100,000. But this is not true. You can use $100,000 to buy two cheap houses. Keep one house for yourself and one house to rent out. You will be able to retire because you would no longer need to pay rent anymore and if you live frugally enough, then any other expenses (e.g. power, food, Internet) can be paid using the rental income derived from the second house.

Don't think that $50,000 houses are impossible to find. If you live away from the popular urban and suburban areas then they are very common.

For example, this tidy 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house is $51,000 USD ($69,000 NZD is roughly $51,000 USD):

Link: http://www.trademe.co.nz/property/residential-property-for-sale/auction-592061964.htm

According to the description, the property generates a passive rental income of $180 USD per week.

The average person needs $20 for electricity and $50 for food per week. Where I live, unlimited broadband Internet costs about $20 per week. That leaves a profit of slightly under $100 per week which should be enough for gas (if you own a car) as well as miscellaneous expenses such as vacations, investments, etc.

Of course, you can lower your weekly expenses even further too by installing solar panels on your roof, growing vegetables and chickens on your land, and ditching the car for a bike.
438  Other / Off-topic / Re: Service/site to get a phone number online on: January 26, 2015, 12:51:06 AM
Not sure if it is what OP is after but I think there are people selling US phone numbers in the marketplace forum. Not sure about other countries though.

EDIT: After some searching, it looks like they're all Google Voice numbers. It doesn't look like you can change the country either.
439  Other / Meta / Re: Why Did There Use To Be A "Chinese Students" Subforum? on: January 26, 2015, 12:35:37 AM
It's mildly racist but not extremely so. People joke about Germans not having a sense of humor and eating sauerkraut. Similar thing.

The classes were broken into companies of their own choosing, each company needed a CEO and CFO
And that's all the rules really. The general idea being that they had to do business with foreingers for bitcoin (as at the time only Westerners had bitcoin).

...Of all the students involved about 20 really made an effort or took part. And it seems to be those from this group that are continueing to use bitcoin (after counting they asked for their bitcoin back).

Interesting. So at first, China had very little to do with Bitcoin but now it's one of the countries where Bitcoin has the largest presence. Perhaps this project was what sparked Bitcoin adoption in China and explains why China is so important for Bitcoin today?
440  Other / Meta / Re: bot made accounts on: January 25, 2015, 11:35:26 PM
real madness, didnt though it would be 1 to 9  Shocked

That was probably a bit of an overstatement on my part. To be fair, I did a rough recount and about half had an obvious spam link in their profile. Of the rest, I'd say about half are genuine and half are bots although the fact that most new accounts have 0 posts makes it hard to guess. So that makes the proportion of bots to real accounts at around 3-to-1. Still there seems to be more bots than real users which I guess was my original point.
