I feel very much out of touch with development since the latest rollback. The latest setback changed things, but an updated longer term timeline was not provided. Can we have an updated tentative timeline for future improvements from the dev team? It would be good to have this I think as I feel a bit in the dark.

- How is the masternode payment testing going?
- When can we expect masternode payments on main net?
- When can we expect further anonimity?
- When can we expect removal of 10 DRK darksend limit?

https://darkcointalk.org/threads/rc3-relaunch-strategy-and-testing.1482/

I agree and feel that investors need more information (especially technical info) in order to gauge the current risk of investing.

I sold all my holdings during the second fork attempt rollback but have bought back 1/2  of my position after getting the last limited update. I am reluctant to pull the trigger on the other 1/2 until I know more. Evan please remember to keep the investors informed. Thanks!

As an investor I would rather have Evan working to get RC3 out as soon as possible than worry about posting minor updates in this ANN thread. It is not like information is not available or scattered about. The current status can be easily inferred by reading the following thread (note this is not the same link as above).

https://darkcointalk.org/threads/rc3-prelaunch-testing.1523/

Thanks the link, it provided a bit more info (I had to crawl this forum to figure out why darkcointalk.org does not load in my browser - SSL issue).

I agree with most people here, Evan should be busy coding! In fact the technical innovations in darkcoin are amazing and the primary reason why I bought in. But the business/PR side of darkcoin is a bit of a shambles. It would be great if there were some other folks on the communications team.

On another note. Can anybody explain what exactly is meant by "enforcement" of masternode payments, what exactly is it doing and how is it done? It seems glossed over a bit on darkcointalk and I couldn't find the details anywhere. thanks

Enforcement "on" means that the network will disregard blocks that are deemed fradualent thus not adding them to the blockchain. This is there to prevent people from tampering with the masternode payments to, for example, pay themselves rather than the elected node. The cause of the unwanted forking to this point was bugs in this enforcement protocol which caused miners to disagree on which blocks should be discarded. Most of the bugs were worked out at the time of the second payment attempt, but a race situation occurred on mainnet (hard to reproduce due to the lack of mining clients testnet) which once again confused the enforcement protocol.

This time enforcing "on" or "off" is a binary switch that is controled by the devs (i.e. it can be switched on and off without people needing to update clients or stop masternode payments). At launch the switch will be "off" which means that the network will accept all blocks (thus no danger of forking) and record the blocks it thinks should be rejected in the debug log.  Once Evan is certain that the log only shows blocks that are actually supposed to be rejected and concludes that the enforcement system is bug free -- he will flip the switch to "on".

In short, payments to masternodes can countinue while the enforcing system is vetted on mainnet via the debug log -- and once things are working correctly the enforcement system will be brought online. On the off-chance there is a problem, the system can be once again turned off, debugged, and patched all without stopping payments (obviously a patch would require people to update clients).

Hope that explains it.

Where is XC now !??

Who cares let's get back to talking about DRK..

So we all update our clients, masternode payments start, once everything is rock solid we update again with full voting rules? Am I understanding correctly?

ie. Masternode payments will start soon without the danger of a failed fork?

Correct.  Mastenodes will be paid.  However this time rather than have the network actually reject blocks, all blocks will be accepted and the blocks that the network thinks should be rejected will be recorded in the debug log.  By checking the log over the course of some time, the devs can determine if any blocks are being inappropriately rejected (this was the cause of all the forking issues) and these bugs can be fixed without stopping payments.

Once all is well in the debug log DRK can then be safely hardforked to allow bad blocks to actually be rejected.

With the low heat/power needed for mining why not run a few. I threw 2 cards into my server to mine since its running 24/7 anyways.

+1

That's what I am talking about. Thanks for your service to the God of Darkness!

I am not saying that no one should mine. Just questioning how to motivate miners. MN owners are motivated by the 20% / block value taken from the miners. So miners get 20% less with MN payments on. That is a fact.
And the question to mine or not to mine - lets say you can rent out your mining power for 0.001 BTC / Mhs. Lets assume you have 200 Mhs on hand. Makes 0.2 BTC/day. With current price 0.0165 its aproximately 12 DRK/day. Which is almost double what you would get while mining directly.

And yes, I mine DRK, but my primary goal is to get as much DRK/day as possible, with the expectation of price rise.

An extra 20% will do little to help the situation you describe and the price of the coin would be lower because there would be no MN positive feedback loop.  In the short term (i.e. before the coin really gets adopted by merchants and the like), you are likely down in terms of fiat even getting the full subsidy (and while not having masternodes).
425  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: June 23, 2014, 12:00:23 PM
56 Masternodes would be pretty profitable considering almost no electricity usage to run them. Much better investment than mining equipment.

Now wait a minute.

It may be a better investment, but if everybody thought that and nobody would care to do energy expensive mining instead, then the coin would never keep the desired hashrate to secure the network.

The Masternodes are not here to secure the blockchain etc... they do a different job.

Without a secure transaction system the masternodes become pretty useless.

With current price, you make red numbers when mining. You can make almost double the DRK/day by renting your rig and buying at current price.
And with masternodes, getting 20% of miners payments ... What reason does one have to mine ? Except take it as a hobby project ?

Because not everybody has money for 1000 DRK and a lot of people already have mining equipment. Plus, a side effect of masternodes is increased price -- meaning that there is a very good reason to keep mining for the future.  This is not even counting the increased popularity (e.g. price) of the coin once Darksend is completely finished and open-sourced.

You have a point only if someone is planning to spend a large amount of money on a mining farm in which case they'd be better off buying DRK and setting up a node.

From richest address link we can see there so many drks owner by fewer people.(743 address have 85.77% drks), this maybe the restrict for DRK's grow road.

Yup you are right. Send an email to troll@iamretarded.io to receive 1% of entire DRK in existence to level things out. That's how I got mine!

Some Darkcoiners are very arrogant people. Just like early Bitcoiners, there is a secret group that believes that Darkcoins should be in "right" hands and not everyone deserves it. Sending an email solved the problem for me. Hope it does for you too.  Tongue

ROFL!! +1 for the lawls.  Cheesy

fool me one shame on you
fool me twice shame on me

A phrase I often live by... but you won't find me dumping. Why? Because it is obvious that the devs are trying to fix the coin.  Think about it.  If you dump now...what will you think when the coin succeeds?  The masternode payments are a fundamental change to bitcoin.  Two trys.. that's NOTHING.

1432 DRK shot just gone through in addition to the 2602.

This worries me.

When all these people buying masternodes get their servers up, they'll find that the revenue has halved or even quartered. Will they then all just cash straight back out ?

I am not really "worried", but I wonder if everybody buying understands the variability. MNs are like solo mining rather than pooled mining where you only get rewarded when your node is elected for service.

I have a feeling we are going to get a lot of "my MN has not gotten paid, DRK is SCAM!!1!!1!" stupidity in the coming days.   Roll Eyes

EDIT: the forking issue we had last time was precisely trying to implement this so basically yeah this one corrects all previous issues and adds the ability to run a masternode with a cold wallet which makes running a masternode 100% safe.

+1

I think this is the answer to the questions asked.

So whats this hard fork for can someone explain this. Is it just to pay the supernodes off or is their more to it in detail. Any information for what this hard fore is for please thanks.

This is non-trivial to do in a fair way that is tamperproof. The network needs to know how to consistently and correctly reject fraudulent blocks.

Remember Bitcoin by default is set up to give the subsidy to only one address.

I repeat myself, DarkSend is a feature. If you chose to buy a TV that integrates some new technologies do you consider this as a form of coercion ?

Absolutely, if a console tracks my eye movement claiming that it's the cool new game control method... I would completely feel coerced when this eye tracker keeps on checking me while I am NOT gaming.

I fail to see your point, if we use your example DarkSend permits on the contrary to protect your privacy. It's like saying "I don't like cash because I'm forced to be anonymous".

Look, I like privacy. I just always assumed that it was something I could switch on and off with darkcoin. I liked that idea.

If this shouldn't be possible in the future anymore (although I had the impression that until now (testphase etc) IT WAS possible to have both systems coexist) than I only hope that before dark send becomes mandatory it also becomes fully open source, or else I quit.  Cool

That's basically the reason for my concern... If I am forced into a closed system my support ends.

I admit that I have not yet set up a masternode, so maybe that's were my ignorance stems from. If a completely functioning masternode system needs the participation of every node (wallet), then I am ok with that, but only if it becomes fully open sourced.

I have NEVER seen anything from the dev team implying that people will be forced to use Darksend while it is still closed. The entire conversation of "should Darksend be on by default and how easy it should it be to turn off" has always been something that has been discussed in conjunction with the full release (i.e. once Darksend is open-sourced).

Hey eduffield, please update front page and titile about hard fork. This should attract more attention.
Personally, I don't read this topic everyday and I've just noticed that hardfork is coming.

Posted the same over at darkcointalk and got no response.  Haven't seen Evan post for a few days so I suspect he is busy, but still -- updating the first post and thread title would REALLY help hardfork awareness.

aw ysssss you're a PIMP

EDIT: will the cold storage be implemented for the MN the 20th as well?

Yep, it's supported by RC3. Binaries will be available soon.

Wow those are awesome news, congratulations sir.

Last question, I saw on darkcointalk that you were happy that approx. 98% of MN were paid, is that a non issue to not reach 100% ? I might have misunderstood also.
As far as I understand that 98% number was from before the checkpointing was removed. Reading through the testing thread at darkcointalk, the checkpointing was causing a bunch of orphans, among other issues, so now that it has been removed that number is likely higher.

great work, but please dont feel rushed. Better to wait longer if needed to make sure that 100% instead of 98% are paid

Well Evan just pulled in the release by a week so he must feel confident. A lot of people were working hard to try and "break" and "hack" testnet and the masternode payments proceeded as planned. I'll let Evan comment on the specific numbers, but I feel much more confident about the masternode payments today than I did a week ago.

I was wondering all day why the price was increasing. I had to go back 6 pages in this thread to find out about evans latest update. I keep saying it, being investors, we need a way to see dev updates on the fly. Twitter would be best for this but the official account does not list the latest update for example. Ive brought this up many times before: This is a major problem being a DRK investor, and im not even a short term trader.

I would try PM'ing InternetApe or Eltito (one of the community leaders over at darkcointalk) to get this sorted. This is too good of an idea to get ignored.
438  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: June 07, 2014, 10:18:53 AM
The darkcoin official twitter account should be utilized as the main news channel. This is because users won't have to skim through lists of useless information and fud. However, the twitter account is being poorly updated. For example, evans latest update is missing.

It's an issue. Investors need to be able to get a grasp of what is going on in a split second. I recommend sorting this out for increased transparency.

This is an excellent idea! In particular, links to dev updates must be posted.

Cold storage for Masternodes is on the way. Smiley

omg this is huge for me and I bet a lot of others. Massive smile if this works out

So does that mean the private key must be online

It would the opposite or there would be no point, right?

Tifozi et all, can you please keep us posted on news from the devs coz we don't know wtf is going on. I was told yesterday evean would have some news in 2-3 days...
I'd love to know what's going on.
Please make such posts a regular thing in here so peeps can keep track about wtf...
the drkcoin reddit is lame and the dev update link is also a dead thread

https://darkcointalk.org/forums/official-developer-thread.15/

In general you should keep track of the most active thread in that subforum. Right now that is the thread titled "Help test RC2 forking issues".

A spoiler from the last page of that thread:
