421  Economy / Exchanges / Re: List of bitcoin debit cards on: November 20, 2015, 11:02:36 PM
can someone tell me if there is any bitcoin debitcard available for free
No, there are no Debit cards that are available for free. No business would do that, it isn't profitable. If you want to use a debit card, you should have enough money to pay the fee anyways. If you only have a few dollars worth of Bitcoin, getting a debit card is not worth it.
422  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Eliminate the need to hold dollars, legalize the use of BTC to pay taxes!!! on: November 20, 2015, 09:41:17 PM
The government won't let that happen. Bitcoin's price is too volatile for them so they could lose money from accepting Bitcoin. They also think Bitcoin is that illegal magic internet money which, since it is "illegal", then they can't accept it.

You missed the most important Bitcoin website ever: Bitcoin.org
424  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shift - Bitcoin Visa Card - now available in the US on: November 20, 2015, 09:34:18 PM
This is interesting. It is one of the few cards that will actually work in the US! Also, it is unlike other "debit cards" in that instead of funding the card with a prepaid amount, it actually deducts the Bitcoin from your account at the market rate, like Bit-x. And there are no fees for now. I wonder how long that will last.
425  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finally, a good description of 21's bitcoin computer possibilities... on: November 20, 2015, 02:11:11 PM
I don't get it. What can this do that I can't already do with my own server. It is just a glorified server with apis to do stuff with bitcoin and the ability to generate a few satoshis for whatever. It might be good for beginners, but honestly, is there anything that this can do that I can't already do in my own server running bitcoin core (besides mining)?
426  Economy / Exchanges / Re: best and trustable Debit card on: November 19, 2015, 08:21:27 PM
Bit-x I have heard is the best debit card. I have used Wagecan before and it is ok. Setting up can be a little bit troublesome and the balance doesn't update with each transaction.
427  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL: What is the reason hard forks require broad consensus? on: November 19, 2015, 08:19:08 PM
........

Without reaching supermajority, multiple competing blockchains can cause a loss of confidence, insecure network due to miners splitting to other chains, confirmation issues, and will in general be bad. This is why any code that involves any sort of fork, contentious or not, requires a supermajority before the node begins to enforce the new rules.

Is there any code change in a hard fork that prevents miners from continuing to mine the old chain, like changing the magic bytes, or changing the version number and adding code that blocks nodes running an earlier version number?
Part of the validation is to check the version number. If the version number is not a certain number or higher then the block is considered invalid and it is rejected. Miners will never mine on an invalid block.
428  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Have I lost my coins? on: November 19, 2015, 01:26:03 PM
Hi,

Electrum looks the same now as before I installed the proper one over the standalone one.

I do have the seed, that's the long sentence they tell you to write down right?

When I installed Electrum I just did it over the top of the standalone one.

Hope that answers everything!

If you have the seed, then you can restore your wallet and will have all of your bitcoin.
429  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Have I lost my coins? on: November 19, 2015, 03:53:32 AM
No it was all done on a W7 laptop. So it's gone then?
Oh, wait, I misread the thread.

Can you provide us a screenshot?

When you reinstalled Electrum, did you have to go through the setup a wallet wizard again or did it immediately load? What does Electrum report as its network status?
430  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Have I lost my coins? on: November 18, 2015, 10:19:28 PM
Did you export the keys from your Android and import them to Electrum? If you didn't there is no way that the desktop one would know about your address.
431  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core version 0.11.2 released on: November 18, 2015, 08:26:56 PM
The reason is that from 0.11.2 onwards, version 4 blocks are being promoted instead of version 3 blocks. This is to add a new feature to bitcoin that enables time delayed transactions directly on the blockchain. It could take 6-12 weeks for all the miners to upgrade, and actual version 4 blocks don't start getting made until after enough "version 4 ready" blocks get made in a given window (951 out of the last 1001 blocks IIRC).
Technically version 4 blocks are being made (they have to be in order for the forking mechanism to know when to fork). According to the BIP, when 750 out of the last 1000 blocks are version 4 or greater, then the new rules will go into affect and OP_CLTV will work. After 950 out of the last 1000 blocks are version 4 or greater, then all new blocks that have a version number less than 4 are invalid.
432  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL: What is the reason hard forks require broad consensus? on: November 17, 2015, 08:13:38 PM
Basically, contentious hard forks, and any sort of fork in general (hard or soft) requires consensus. The fork should only occur once a supermajority of the users switch to use the new rules. In most cases supermajority is defined as 95% of the last 1000 blocks, but its definition does vary.
433  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin dev IRC meeting in layman's terms (2015-11-05) on: November 17, 2015, 04:36:09 PM
Thanks for effort. Does anyone know if 0.12 will have finally the pruning option so we can run a node without having to download the entire blockchain and use the wallet? I know it can be done now but it requires some sort of geeky stuff and you can't even use the wallet when you do that for some reason. I need a more simple option.
0.12 will have the wallet enabled with pruning. Pruning is already enabled in 0.11 with the -prune option when you run it.
434  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Are there any plans to release Core 0.10.4? on: November 16, 2015, 09:55:47 PM
Why? If a system runs 0.10, it can also run 0.11. I didn't even understand why was 0.10.3 released when we had 0.11 since July. Devs need to focus on updating the most recent version...
I also don't understand yet why this is the case, it's like they are developing 0.10 and 0.11 on the side. Why would you update something that is old? there must be a reasonable explanation because it feels pretty stupid to do so, and there shouldn't be any backwards compatibility thing.
I don't think there are any major compatibility breaking changes from 0.10 to 0.11. However, they still released 0.10.4 to backport the OP_CLTV code to 0.10 in case there is some difference between 0.10 and 0.11 which breaks some systems. They aren't actually updating 0.10 and writing more code for it on the side. They are updating the master branch and then backporting any significant code changes that should be released soon like the OP_CLTV soft fork stuff, stuff for fixing the upnp bug and enforcing LowS signatures.

The release has been tagged in the bitcoin repository and the release notes are available on the repository at https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/0.10/doc/release-notes.md. I think the problem is that not enough people have done the gitian builds (they require 3 or more people to continue with a release) so it cannot yet be released.
435  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do people still send BTC to the genesis block address? on: November 16, 2015, 01:36:41 AM
https://blockchain.info/address/1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa

As you can see, there are 999 transactions into this address which is the first ever as far as I know, so this address has basically 66 BTC that are frozen forever. What's the deal?
That is actually not correct. The address is a valid address, it just cannot spend the Bitcoin from the GENESIS TRANSACTION. This is because that transaction isn't actually in the unspent outputs database and never will be. All of the other transactions that go to it can be spent because those transactions are in the unspent output database. So actually of that 66 BTC, only 50 of it cannot be spend. The remaining 16 can be spent.

The only problem I have with this is question 5. You are assuming that everyone is using Blockchain.info's wallet, which is not the case. In fact, it isn't even recommended to use blockchain.info's wallet. You should instead change that answer to something about how it is practically impossible to brute force a private key due to the massive number of possible addresses. You should also have something in the answer about good passwords and choosing a good and secure wallet.
well thereotically, you can brutefore but it's just like finding a neddle in the sea. I suggest he should edit it to electrum with password and 2FA or bitcoincore or something that runs on your PC with password.
I think it should be something generic, not something ultra specific to one wallet.
437  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: you think Trezor is a safe way for bitcoin ! on: November 15, 2015, 12:57:02 AM

In lamest terms, when I was buying a Trezor and did a research and decided to put my savings on it, I understood that this device is the safest way out there to store my bitcoins and that even if Trezor company ceases to exist I will be able to recover my coins and also that it's not that easy to insert a malicious code in it. To some extent you still have to trust them as you trust Electrum developers out there with every new release for example!
1. is trazor ceases.. yea you can recover coins.. but not because of any function of the plastic gadget. not because of code stored on the gadget.. but because of writing on paper..
again if trezor website ceases.. the HARDWARE WALLET is useless... which is the point.. the device is not infallible..
It is not, where are you getting that information. The PIN is stored on the device itself. It would be stupid to store it on Trezor's servers. Again, why do you keep saying that it won't work? Trezor keeps the important data on the device itself, not someone else's servers.

about paper wallet ! do you think that the website you use for generating the wallets can't get your money ? for exemple : if you use a website that generate wallets papper then i got the privat key and public key and put 40 btc on it , i think there is someway for the website who offer the generator to get your privat key , maybe if they save the keys which generated and later the owner of site will check the wallets which generated and see if there is money on them then he will use the privat key and get ur money since he have the privat key and public key becasue you used his website for generrating , correct me if am wrong !
Many wallets allow you to generate paper wallets locally. Also, most websites which let you generate paper wallets are open source. The idea is that you download the code for the website. Then you take that code and go to an offline computer and generate the address there. That way there is no way that the owners of the website could ever know the private keys and the private keys are never exposed to the internet.
440  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core version 0.11.2 released on: November 14, 2015, 04:27:45 AM
Where is the 95% consensus to implement an OP code change? Or right we don't need consensus for Blockstream projects.
The developers agreed and there was consensus to include OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY in this version and on. The actual enforcement of BIP65 for this will only occur after 951 out of the last 1001 blocks have version 4 or higher. Read the info about it in the release notes in the OP.
