4241  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: is it possible to store the blockchain in two different hard drives? on: February 03, 2019, 12:25:39 AM
There are also specialized filesystems that support this as well without LVM: Btrfs, and ZFS to name a couple.

btrfs is still on-development and AFAIK features such as RAID / multi-drive isn't fully stable yet.

Actually i have been using it for more than 3 years with zero issues using on the fly compression. Btrfs was officially declared stable when it was taken out of the experimental phase in the kernel by 2012, when several Linux distributions moved Btrfs from experimental to production or supported status.

The only features "still on development" would be raid 5/6 modes, raid 0/1 and jbod are perfectly fine.

With btrfs you can mix and match different devices and use them like a single device: https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Using_Btrfs_with_Multiple_Devices

There are several guides on btrfs out there, most distros have recent enough kernels to safely use it already.
4242  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: how to create a shortcut to electrum btc wallet on: February 03, 2019, 12:00:52 AM
Hi

I am running ubuntu 16.04 LTS and downloaded the latest version of electrum btc wallet but I dont know how to launch it or create a shortcut, can someone help please?

If you downloaded the binary, instead of using the package from the Ubuntu official repository, you first uncompress the compressed tar file into a folder, enter that folder and then you can launch it or make a shortcut from there.

If you select the file form there, pressing ctrl m makes a shortcut which you can move anywhere else.

Also, what you probably actually want, is to lock the icon into the dock dash (name unrelated to the altcoin) on the left.

tl;dr

Just launch Electrum and when the icon shows in the dash, Right-click the application icon and select Add to Favorites.

"Found Block!" is probably something a lot of people have never seen in their whole lifetimes Cheesy I hope ckpool finds their block soon, it's been way too long.
Especially in 2019 mining BTC with a GPU  Tongue

I have seen them, but only when mining some random altcoin. Chance of finding a block by yourself, even when using the latest asic unit or a farm of them, is abysmal, and its only getting smaller. I guess its the same as playing the lottery, but i bet someone will calculate that it is in fact easier to win the lottery Cheesy

4246  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain will be releasing S15 and T15 on 8/11/2018 on: February 02, 2019, 09:06:25 PM
I have a similar device, but you can't feed mine with 120v, the min is like 180v or so.
I'm powering a quiet R4 at home with it, but it can power an S9 just fine.

From two phases (our residential service is like that in US for office buildings) i would theoretically get 208v, but... a tester shows 203v. Thanks to that device, the R4 is actually getting 220v just fine, and the electricity here sometimes fluctuates so it has kept the miner happy (its NOT using an APW5 mind you, but some hp server psu with an adapter).
4247  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Should the UK return the Venezuelan gold? on: February 02, 2019, 08:20:10 PM

Funny you brought this here, because today came news about the Maduro regime hastily selling gold to the United Arab Emirates, and there are rumors gold was sent in "that Russian plane", possibly with their families.

I posted this in the Fit to Talk project, and I hoped to get some replies from Venezuelans.

Quote from: Jet Cash
Venezuela is selling a large consignment of gold to the UAE, and I find the political ramification quite fascinating. Because of the US sanctions, Venezuela is probably having to offer a 5% or so discount on the price, and the UAE will be able to melt the gold and recast it, and thus gain its full value. They are paying in Euro, and it is not clear how this money will be used. It is claimed that it will be used to purchase food, but it is more likely that it will be used to purchase light crude oil to replace the oil it purchased from the US. This can be mixed with the heavy Venezuelan oil to create a product that can be sold on the open market. This has two damaging effects on the US. Not only is it depriving the US of a useful oil exchange, but it is introducing yet more oil sales that are not based on the dollar. Maduro will be gaining the revenue from both the sale of the gold, and the sale of the heavy Venezuelan oil, and this could well be diverted.

So what can the US do about it> Not a lot in my opinion. The UAE is assisting the US in its attempt to force regime change in Iran, so they won't want to rock that boat. There is also the problem of Maduro's grasp on the army. The US want a number of senior Venezuelan army officers to be prosecuted for drug offences and other alleged crimes, so they are likely to continue to support Maduro.

I'll try to get some more info, and take the article to the political board here.

Last I read/heard news about it (yesterday), the US applied pressure to the UAE and the transaction was halted. The Russians probably got theirs. This gold is from the national reserve, its not supposed to be used for anything, just stored safely. Traditionally in the central bank but some is kept abroad. Because Maduro is not recognized as the legitimate president, no orders coming from him or his officials need to be obeyed by the countries who have officially backed Guaidó and denounced Maduro's usurpation.

There is also the problem of the more recent gold being extracted by destroying thousands of acres of millennial rain forest, and the killing of people due to the organized crime involved in its "illegal" extraction which is then conveniently seized by the military who then in turns sells it

About the heavy oil refineries, indeed they belong to Citgo, which in turn belongs to Venezuela, its a Venezuelan State owned company.
Due to mismanagement and lack of maintenance, the largest heavy oil refineries within Venezuela itself stopped, and they hastily came up with buying both lighter crude oil and fuel already processed, this of course is given away almost for free to the population, ruining what little money could be coming to the State oil company PDVSA, and is estimated 2/3rds of it gets smuggled out of the country anyway, with military complicity...

Citgo has been put under control of President Guaidó. The US has not issued an embargo against Venezuela, but against specific individuals from the Maduro regime. After Maduro ordered the American embassy closed, he also ordered the diplomats in the US to leave. However Guaidó has told them to disobey the usurper and stay. Some diplomats are leaving, but others staying. Something similar is happening in all Venezuelan institutions, including the military. Usually those who express support to Guaidó (in Venezuela) get imprisoned, but more and more are rebelling, and its only a matter of time.

There is general anger to the Maduro regime, he is literally the reason Venezuela got it its worth inflation in history, and there is more to tell of his wrongdoings, but i'll stop for now. Regime change is wished by the vast majority of Venezuelans, including former Chavez supporters. It is THAT bad.

There is a good video whose English version finally came out and I was waiting to share a link here so you can all understand the situation better:

Does the mac address adjustment needed for latest cobalt 2019-01-24 to flash permanent via ssh or its only needed for sd card?

Its not needed. But the SD card users tend to flash the exact same image (from a PC) to multiple SDs, therefore cloning the mac address.
If your devices are already using different mac addresses, don't worry.

Never heard the part about the hack of the dash clone version. The petro that exists now might not even actually exist at all, because as you mentioned, its completely centralized and impossible to interact with its blockchain (there's only 1 web wallet and 1 mobile wallet). One dude in the petro ANN thread actually found some negative account balances in their "block explorer," which again, might not actually be exploring anything.
Because it was never made public, that's internal info that leaked... It "delayed" the launch of Petro v3 (Dash centralized edition) a few months... Doesn't matter anyway, it was made wrong since the beginning and they insist in absolute centralization as "solution" to their security problems.

Its just like what they did to the economy, they made the problem much worse....
4253  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: February 01, 2019, 09:21:12 PM
I have seen a model (Antminer S9j 14,5) with grids behind the fan. That is much louder like a model without grids. Because the fan is in direct contact, a high tone is created in addition to the fan noise.

Does anyone have an idea how to get the quieter? It is very disturbing.

Unscrew the fan and grid, place grid back in its rightful place, screw everything back... Done.
4254  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Should I close the Fit to Talk project? on: February 01, 2019, 04:48:19 PM

If you revive the Ubuntu thread, I can help you with that as well. What is holding you back? Are you set on Ubuntu or still considering alternatives?

Thanks for the offer. My main problem is not wanting to cope with the disruption in switching my main operation from Windows to Linux.I use Ubuntu on the Netbook, and have done so for many months. I ran a Bitcoin node on it, and recently set up a Dash node, but I' still a bit undecided about Dash. I've been looking for alternative software in preparation for the move, and texting some of it. For example, I've used Irfanview for years, but there isn't a Linux version. I've found an alternative, and I'm comfortable with it. Many other utilities such as Audacity and Brackets have Linux variants, so I don't expect problems with them.

I decided on Ubuntu Studio because of the content producing software that is included in the installation package. Having most of the packages that I use installed automatically should be a great help in the switch. I planned to remove the HDD from the notebook, and replace it with the SSD. I can then do a clean install of Ubuntu. The Widows HDD can go into a case for connection via USB. This should let me access any files that I need. Does this sound like a good plan?

Sure, you can keep the slow HDD for bulk data later as well. Just remember mechanical drives don't like sudden impacts, so be extra careful.

Before I switched to Linux completely in 2007, I used to use Irfanview as well, but mainly for viewing pictures and not transforming. The traditional tool for that in a Linux GUI is Gimp, but I admit that might be a bit overkill for simple changes.

According to AlternativeTo, and Askubuntu; among the programs to try are:

The last one is not open source and can't be used legally in a company without a purchased license.

I have been lazy enough to neglect searching for a decent image viewer. My little photography organizing is done with Shotwell, which along with Ristretto are perhaps not the best choices... I'm going to test out Nomacs which looks really good, gThumb i used it a long time ago but i guess its much better now. For KDE/QT desktops there is also Gwenview.

Finally as a last resort, nothing stops you from running Irfanview with wine.

As for running nodes, Linux is home for Bitcoin and other altcoin server/node/wallet software. Not sure i would do that in a laptop/netbook tho, it will use more battery and bandwidth. You could, setup a full node in a normal PC, setup a Lightning Node and an Electrum Server, and use Electrum in your laptop configured to use your own server. You can link both using Tor, WireGuard, etc. The possibilities are endless...

Linux puts the fun back into computers, a fun that was run dry by certain companies I'm not going to bother mentioning. But if you happened to use personal computers before those companies dominated the market, you can probably understand what this really means.

For anyone else reading this, consider giving Linux a try. Start here.

I had a teamspeak server, and that had a free licence. They have changed the licensing though, and it wasn't worth spending the monthly rental. I could use a discord channel, and I might explore that.

Also take a look at Mumble, its free open source, and its voice quality is unmatched.
4255  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: February 01, 2019, 02:48:46 PM
I get error Unknown package 'firmware'.

That is strange, but i think i experienced that once or twice before. Try removing the package firmware to force a reset: opkg remove firmware

If that doesn't work, then you could follow the procedure to return to the factory firmware, and then again install Braiins OS.

In the official docs, ignore where they mention an SD card, their English isn't perfect and that wording is imprecise. That is the procedure to return the firmware in the NAND (not SD) of your miner's controller (tho it could work the same if you had an SD card with the jp4 jumper moved, i guess?:

Quote
cd braiins-os_am1-s9_ssh_VERSION
python3 restore2factory.py backup/2ce9c4aab53c-2018-09-19/ your-miner-hostname-or-ip

This part 2ce9c4aab53c-2018-09-19 changes on each unit install. In Linux use tab to autocomplete the actual folder, or just look at them inside ./backup/.

If you installed it with the python script, you should already have a backup and going back to Bitmain's firmware is easy using that method.
But it is now possible to use the (current) python script to go back to a factory firmware downloaded from bitmain when you don't have a backup.

The restore2factory.py python script should have an argument that accepts Bitmain's firmware file directly, but I have yet to try that procedure.
4256  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: EXPool.org Mining Pool / [PPS Payout] [ZERO fees] on: February 01, 2019, 02:17:25 PM
Therefore, if you want to calculate the probability of the collapse of my pool or conditions sufficient for its existence, you must take into account the market indicators of all coins for SHA256. If there are scientific works on this topic, then I will gladly read it, because I searched a lot and had to use materials from related topics such as economics for myself.

So your pool is a multicoin pool, therefore an altcoin pool like zpool.ca which has other sha256 coins but pays in bitcoin? In that case you should move your thread to the corresponding forum area: Pools (Altcoins) because this area of the forum is exclusive to Bitcoin mining pools.
4257  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Venezuela on: February 01, 2019, 01:18:49 PM
Actually the petro was 100% the idea of the Maduro and his administration. The Venezuelan congress wanted nothing to do with it, and I'm betting that once Maduro is removed from power the project will be abandoned. As far as we know he only ended up raising about $250,000 during the NEM petro ICO.
They sacked the original author (it wasn't Maduro's idea, but he bought it) and started another round since October. They have been taking money since then again but the amount is undisclosed. You can still register in their page and they will happily take your bitcoins. Like most ICOs, you will probably lose it all. Perhaps its just a fund to aid their escape...

Petro started as an Ethereum token, an idea that was scratched, then moved into a Nem token (that pre-ico) that was scratched as well (funds were NOT returned), then into a Dash clone, but was hacked and they covered the incident, and redid yet again using the Dash code, this time without wallets, completely centralized in a single server and that server provides the only online wallet, and doesn't give you keys or anything. Nodes and mining was kept indoors (only they do it); and of course they are not sharing the modifications they did to the code (even Venezuelan law forces them to, but they are above any laws anyway).

Since the time of the Nem pre ico; it was rumored the Russians invested. It might be that Russian plane that left recently was returning that investment in gold. This is of course dirty assets getting laundered, as that gold belongs to the Venezuelan people and not any "officials".

Both are native segwit, so I don't think they can be verified with brainwallet, you'll have to use Electrum.  Thanks in advance.

I verified both with Electrum and they check.

Are you running a https://kano.is signature campaign? Cheesy
I'll switch to it if it pays more than BTC0.0021 / week Smiley
Technically, if you have at least an Avalon 741, you should currently earn "~ 0.00218995 BTC" per week @ 100% diff blocks! Grin

I have a feeling you were looking to get paid for the signature, though. Thankfully, Kano doesn't take away rewards from the miners to pay for such advertising... Obviously, he doesn't need to (see sig). Wink

Actually I was thinking yxt could do it out of his own pocket, he supports what he likes after all Smiley
For a large miner wanting to promote his favorite pool, that isn't so far fetched. And his sign does look like a campaign signature, so it was more a praise than anything.
4260  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So I told my banker about bitcoin on: February 01, 2019, 04:06:53 AM
This is My country and where I live

this merchant would not be able to accept bitcoin as a means of payment. this is another example

Those types of merchants abound in my country and guess what, thanks to the magic of hyperinflation, most have to own a debit card reader, usually the mobile variation. Last year our physical currency went down to 1% of the total circulating, because the regime in its infinite wisdom. not only made money out of nowhere, they made it digitally only (added zeroes to the State bank accounts, so they could keep paying wages, etc after running out of money).

These things aren't exactly cheap, they cost about the same as a smartphone.
Often the merchants share one among many, so there is usually an additional table just for paying, as this process isn't instant since the device needs to dial up, connect to the bank, do the tx and show/print the result and hang up. For Every Single Customer. Yet we are used to it, and so could you.

Transacting with Bitcoin isn't much different to the debit card routine.
