441  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Looking for a solution to DESTROY altcoin in PUBLIC on: September 30, 2014, 08:26:54 AM
You can generate a random address in a way that provably involves many people, so manipulation would be pretty much impossible. Finding the private key for this address is as hard as finding the private key for any given real address.

One possible procedure for generating a provably random address (assuming that addresses for your coin are basically built like bitcoin addresses):
  • Let arbitrary people (forum members, for example) generate a random 160-bit number each.
  • Everyone who generated such a number posts its hash (and keeps the number itself secret). You'd need to specify which hashing algorithm should be used here, it just serves to prove that the random number was indeed generated before any other of the random numbers were known.
  • On a given date, everyone posts her random number.
  • A list is compiled with all posted random numbers whose hash matches the previously published hash of this user. These random numbers are then combined using logical XOR.
  • The resulting 160-bit random number is converted into an address of your coin just like you would convert the 160-bit hash of a public key.

All steps (except the actual random number generation and hashing) can be done in public for everyone to check.
Note that no real public key is ever generated, so even if an ECDSA weakness is found it would not be possible to compute the private key for this address (unless RIPEMD-160 is also broken).

Payment made to your Bitcoin address from your profile.

You should be aware that anyone can send bitcoins to any address. Especially if it is dust like in this case. Look up "blockchain spamming".

Of course this does not say anything about the trustworthyness of the OP.

443  Other / Meta / Re: accounts 'ere given collateral, what to do? on: September 29, 2014, 10:36:28 AM
There are folks who buy accounts - but an account is only worth something if it is reasonably old and does not have negative trust.
If the collateral account fits the categories you might be able to sell it, but you probably won't make enough to cover the defaulted loan.

bitcoin-qt generates 100 private keys with corresponding addresses in advance, so chances are good that if you have a not too old backup of your wallet.dat you might have the private key for this address in that wallet. In that case, bitcoin-qt will show the balance of this address (and you will see the transaction in the transactions pane) when you start it with this wallet.dat.
So if your current wallet.dat is really unused (that means that you did not use an address from this new wallet.dat for pool mining payout or so), you can stop bitcoin-qt, replace its wallet.dat with the one from the backup, and restart it.
Whatever you do, be careful to keep both wallet.dat files safe somewhere in case you mix something up. I think there's an option to merge a wallet.dat, too, but I never had a situation where I'd want that, so I don't know how it works - and I might be totally mistaken about this option, too.

If your private key (which is stored in the wallet) is lost, you can't access the bitcoins. Nobody can, so even if you manage to convince everybody that you are the rightful owner of these coins, nobody would be able to help you.

Consider this cheap tuition for the "why you should do backups" course.

You should probably submit your CV right now anyway, so you're first in line when a new hiring round starts  Smiley
Looks like they're a cool company to work for.

Onkel Paul

I don't know. I've cold submitted a few in the past and in my experience "We will keep your CV on file" never leads anywhere. Which is understandable. Hiring is usually a process.

I see that for big companies, but Mycelium is a pretty small company (yet) so it's unlikely that your CV would be stuffed away without being noticed. Submitting the CV now does not mean that you should then be quiet when they call for resumes in another hiring round, but that you should follow up with updated CV info and state your interest in their job offer.
Good luck whatever route you choose!

Try betting somewhere. You might like it.

Betting can be fun, but it's not a way to grow your wealth, unless you have inside knowledge about the bet or a really good feeling for unintuitive probabilities.
You should always see it as a game for which you pay to have some fun.

448  Economy / Speculation / Re: Who are the buyers of coins? on: September 25, 2014, 10:56:22 AM
was using email in 1991, it was pretty widespread in universities at that time.

Have been using e-mail since 1986... Knew in the mid-to-late 80's that packet-switched networks (i.e. TCP/IP) are the future and not circuit-switched ones (X.25), and that even phone calls would be routed over IP networks. Sadly, I did not bet my meager student wealth on it then :-(
Now, with wife and family, I can't just bet my meager employee wealth on bitcoin, even though I'm equally convinced that it (or at least the blockchain concept for currency transactions) is the future. So I just gather small amounts. Still I'm happy to know that at most 0.1% of the world population can ever have more bitcoin than I have now  Cool

Hey, if you have another round of hiring, you'll announce it here, right? I almost submitted my CV last time.

Yes, the QtQR code includes a zero-width non-breaking space as first character, I made a fix to remove this character from scan results if necessary.
It works now for me, and will work for you with the next release as well Smiley

Sounds like the generated QR code is slightly non-spec-compliant. It should contain only the URL characters, not invisible spaces or other weird stuff.
Of course, handling off-spec data robustly is good, but you can only work around so many errors...

Was genau willst du erreichen?
Den Bitstamp Dollar Kurs kann man nicht in einen Kraken Euro Kurs umrechnen, das sind jeweils Kurse, die sich auf den Exchanges durch die Marktmechanismen ergeben.
Deswegen ergibt deine Frage keinen Sinn. Formulier sie nochmal richtig.

ETA: Wait. You have 3k posts. Huh

Accounts can be sold. Dunno if it's the case here but it would be an explanation.

Whatever you choose, be careful not to infringe on trademarks. Legal hassle can easily cost more than you can ever make from the game.
Wishing you success - online games which are fun are a good and legitimate kind of bitcoin business in my opinion.

Is it possible to mine any coins with my phone and I have a LG G Flex.

Forget it. Even high-end phones don't have enough power to mine profitably.

Google found this coin:
http://colnect.com/de/coins/coin/48524-1_Antoninianus-238~244_-_Gordian_III-R%C3%B6misches_Reich
which has obviously the same front side but a different back side. But I'm not a coin expert.

Onkel Paul

Edit: Looks like I was mistaken. There are different coins from roman emperors with very similar or even equal faces but different names.
Here is another one:

As I said - not a coin expert.

Looks like you fell for this scam:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=784587

Look at the URL in that mail you got. It leads to "bilcointalk", not "bitcointalk".
Never ever click on links in such unsolicited mails!

460  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins replacing real curency? on: September 16, 2014, 12:01:23 PM
Didn't vote because the options are not really sensible. For a poll, you should specify a list of options that read like answers, not like questions :-)

But regarding the topic questions:

- Bitcoin will most likely not replace "real currency" as the requirements and limits of the two are not really the same.
Bitcoin is a great mechanism for transporting value over the internet with very low friction (and very little intervention possibility by banks and governments).
This is both good and bad, depending on actual usage and on your point of view regarding government interference with unlawful commerce.

- Transactions are already safe from being scammed (the blockchain technology ensures that). People, though, get scammed all the time, whether with bitcoin or with fiat, because we're trusting others who appear to be trustworthy. Scammers' main skill is to appear trustworthy while not actually being trustworthy :-) Can't fix human psychology.
