441  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-08-22: Mises Circle: The Problem With Altcoins: Why None Can Succeed on: August 24, 2013, 04:32:00 AM
Nobody is really inventing a new "lightbulb".

They're just changing the filament color and the socket sizes/voltages and calling it "new".

If any altcoin had any innovations that were truly worthwhile, the main bitcoin client would fork to include it, therefore invalidating the existence of the alt-coin in the first place.

The only alt-coin that has any purpose beyond outright bamboozlery is Namecoin, and it won't flourish until the ISPs come under attack from governments desperate to control citizenry.

+1

Its still a lightbulb. Bitcoin will evolve just like lightbulbs.

442  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Howcome so little traction in online porn world? on: August 23, 2013, 08:21:47 PM

Because the people who buy pr0n have dumb habits that hide Bitcoin from them. They are also likely strongly conservative people who would shun a non-government backed currency.

EDIT: Found this:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16680-porn-in-the-usa-conservatives-are-biggest-consumers.html#.UhehHmRd808

"Residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriages boasted 11% more porn subscribers than states that don't explicitly restrict gay marriage"

So, how many of those that bought porn identified themselves as conservative? Oh that's right, we don't know. Your conjecturing skills are excellent.
443  Economy / Economics / Re: Why bitcoin will appreciate forever on: August 20, 2013, 01:07:11 AM
A better coin is possible, better privacy and microtransactions, otherwise just as good as bitcoin. An altcoin that good could take good slice of the market, but I have not seen such altcoin yet, and hopefully I shall be able to see it coming in time before the mob sees it.

There are ALREADY altcoins out there that offer improvements on bitcoin. Everyone must be dumping their bitcoins for these better coins, right?

Some argue that while no current altcoin offers any significant improvement over bitcoin, "someday" it will happen....Well, take a look at betamax versus vhs. Betamax was unquestionably the superior format. But they lost the format war because they came 2nd. I predict the same fate for any new altcoin startup.

The 3rd reason that I believe a 'better' altcoin won't usurp bitcoin is this: bitcoin protocol can be upgraded. Its not static.

444  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: List of Major Bitcoin Heists, Thefts, Hacks, Scams, and Losses on: August 18, 2013, 12:44:32 AM
I was caught in a couple of these scams. Seeing them all together in one place is frightening. The amount of funds stolen in Bitcoin has to be proportionally larger than the combined thefts in any world currency. It has to be like 5-7% of all Bitcoins in existence have been stolen. It makes Bitcoin look like just a mind-boggling perverse stream of thefts since its inception.

Point taken. But the nice thing is, it doesn't matter even if 90% are stolen. Bitcoin would still be usable. Furthermore, much of the stolen btc may well be put back into circulation at *some* point.

What about port forwarding setttings? UDP is used for fastest connection speed, but it might be unable to connect and is using TCP instead.

Still got 6 month or 12 month codes?

Are these USA codes? They won't work for me otherwise.
450  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] Beef Jerky for Coins! Head on over to Jay's Jerky and Goodies on: July 27, 2013, 08:23:34 PM
Both the Beef and Buffalo are showing up "$0.00" for cost.  Did you sell out already?

LOL no, the $0.00 is to show that I do not accept USD.

451  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Devil worshipers cult Illuminati (Bilderberg Group) teaching little kids sex on: July 27, 2013, 07:08:39 PM
Maybe you should get out more, Rassah. The bible belt of the USA is not the only place on planet earth where Christians teach abstinence to their kids.

Of course I will trust personal experience over a study that google found for you. As would any reasonable person. If a study shows that one group is getting good results, and the other group isn't, the group that isn't should be examined for anomalies and the strategies, objectives and outcomes compared. This way, we could clearly see where the FAILURE GROUP IS GOING WRONG. That would be scientific, and produce useful data. To automatically assume that one data point proves everything, is not scientific, its just pushing an agenda.

Again, moral relativism and Christianity don't mix. Take these kids out of public schools where they teach them that life is meaningless, and your data point will be turned on its ass. With Christianity, abstinence has a reason besides the prevention of rashes and single mothers.

Christ teaches "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" That is a fitting indictment of the state of free public education in the West.

The joke is on you by showing that lax morals degrades good character and sound reasoning. You wish your reasoning to be taken seriously, then you joke about sex with kids? Fail.

You again. Pointless logic, which is par for the course for you. How many times does one have to say it? Cars have a purpose other than to take aim at someone and threaten and kill. It boggles me no end that these meme repeaters think they're being clever.

But no one CARES if a gun's primary purpose is to kill people. Don't you understand that? You can't just control other people and force them to abandon a lifestyle you disagree with because you think they are savages in need of your political enlightenment.

A gun's primary purpose is to fire a lead slug down-range. Guns don't have political agendas.

Sad. Sort of like an internal combustion engine's purpose is to exhaust fuel which it burns.

Desperate, are we?

Sort of like your primary purpose is to exhaust CO2.

454  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Devil worshipers cult Illuminati (Bilderberg Group) teaching little kids sex on: July 26, 2013, 03:30:41 AM

Whatever.

I know from personal experience that abstinence education with minimal sex education (at school) does work with a high rate of success.

If the parents aren't on board, any school education program you can care to name will have a lower success rate.

The other problem is that the idea of abstinence is a Christian ideal. If you don't teach the core values of Christianity alongside abstinence, well of course the abstinence education isn't going to work.  It makes no sense to teach abstinence alongside moral relativism.

Kent Hovind once said he would be happy to debate whether or not sex education should be taught in public schools. "But you're asking the wrong question, the real question is, 'should we have public schools'".

456  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013–07–17 Primecoin Wants to Capture the Wasted Energy of Bitcoin's Algorithm on: July 20, 2013, 12:34:16 AM
I cringe every time someone thinks Bitcoin's collective hashing power is "wasted".

It just means you don't understand what it does - secures the network, and verifies transactions. There is no percentage "overhead" to capture, just like your automobile doesn't fix potholes in the street while at a stoplight, hashing isn't just shifting bits around for the hell of it.

Please, learn more before spewing out that old trope of "wasting" cycles.
It's definitely wasting energy if that energy could be used to both solve the necessary problems in securing the network AND something else useful, like what Primecoin does. Otherwise, you need to direct resources at securing the network, and the same (but independent) amount of resources at finding prime numbers. If we can merge the two workloads in the same amount of work without significant tradeoffs, it'd be stupid not to.

It's similar to how not doing BTC mining on a merged-mining-enabled pool is wasteful (or would be, if anyone used NMC). Mining can be a lot more than it is -- we just haven't been creative enough. Maybe one day a SETI-like coin will come out, where you can solve the problems they deem important while securing the SETIcoin network at the same time with no significant increase in work to do both at the same time.

This isn't a knock against bitcoin then. According to your definition, EVERYTHING humans do is wasteful.

459  Economy / Speculation / Re: PRICE ROCKET!!! GET ON HOLD TIGHT AND GET READY TO DOUBLE YOUR MONEY! on: July 15, 2013, 02:32:35 AM

The only real expense is the exchange trade fee (to buy back CAD), which starts at 2.5% and decreases with volume.

Virtex lowered their fees considerably last week. They now start at 1.5%.
Very great news!

Virtex stock went up 30% after they announced the fee cut.
