A preview review of this drive was posted about two weeks ago on storagereview.com.   They found that it's getting close to 190MB/s on the outer tracks.  Shocked

Picked one up from shakaru over the holiday weekend (one of several good transactions I've had with shakaru).  Very nice drive and a really good deal!  Very happy with it.  Grin

Any news from Inaba ? The live test should be running by now...  Tongue

Very eager to see what Inaba has to say.  Sadly I expect him to report that there were "problems" that prevented him from seeing advertised performance (or any performance) and they will need to reschedule.

Maybe I should just RMA it then.  I don't want there to be other problems in the future

Yeah, I thought about giving the fan external power.  I don't mind full power/noise since it will be in a data warehouse.  The problem is finding an adapter for the fan power to PSU or mobo power

That is ghetto!

If it's not possible/practical to fix the short (I can do some soldering), then I think I'll try to RMA it.  If I can't RMA it, then I'll try your ghetto mod  Wink

I have a XFX 5870 that I bought off one of the forum members (I bought more than one so I can't remember who sold it to me).  It's a reference card and the fan does run.  I got another fan and replaced it, but that also didn't work.  The card itself seems to run fine, but obviously won't run long without a fan.

I just noticed what appears to a spot that is shorted out right next to the power header for the fan.  Seem like this is probably the issue.  Before I try to track down the forum user and try to figure out how to RMA this, is there a quick/easy fix?

Thanks for the info, would you still recommend this card over a 6970 for gaming?

Depends on the game.  If the game has good CrossFire support and a good CrossFire profile, you will probably end up with much higher performance than a single 6970.

P4man makes a good point that if a game makes good use of VRAM and can use >1GB, then a 6970 *might* be better.

FYI, I can play BF3 at high settings on my 5870 1GB with very good results.  If I stuck one of my 5970's in here I'm sure I could get it to run at ultra settings at 1080p with no problems.  Don't forget you might need a quad core CPU on current gen games.

I bought like 9 from him so far.  Worked perfectly.  Might have to hit him up for a few more....

at the risk of sounding like a noob, can somoene please explain to me why these cards go for so much more than the 6970s...

58xx and 59xx series cards are generally the best for mining.  Fast performance and lower power consumption compared to the 68xx and 69xx.

ATI did some weird stuff with naming.

The 6970's equivalent is the 5870 in the prior generation.  A 5970 is a dual gpu part with two 5870 GPUs on board and 2GB of RAM.  Makes for a lot of hashing power in one slot.  Also, the 5970 uses less power than 2 x 5870's, partly because it is volted and clocked lower than the 5870's, even though it's the same chip.

And it WAS Design contest so please read thread up  Wink

PS. Background is transparent and it represents lightness of Litecoin   Grin

Guess I haven't been following it as closely as I should!  I understand the new logo now.  But somehow I don't think it captures the awesomeness of litecoin.  Grin Should have added my two cents when I could!

Yes, I think that's right.  By "deal with it" I mean that a percentage fee won't be possible due to such technical limitations.
455  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Litecoin - a lite version of Bitcoin. Launched! on: November 23, 2011, 09:01:35 PM
The whole point of the fee is to
a) CREATE A PENALTY for small transactions and thus make spam uneconomical.
b) charge for space in the block which has everything to do w/ the transaction size (in kb) and not the transaction value (in LTC).

I get that, but I'm not speaking from the perspective of the technical blockchain mechanics.  Instead, I am thinking more along the lines of making ltc (or btc for that matter) economically feasible in as many scenarios as possible, thereby maximizing the potential for innovation and usage.  If there are limitations resulting from the way transactions and the blockchain works, then that is just something we need to deal with.

I frequently transfer small amounts of crypto coins under 10 units so I suggest we use a percentage fee and not a fixed fee. Can we make the fee be like 1% or something based upon the amount you are transferring ?

I would like a percentage fee too.  I think the question is whether there is enough aggregate volume of microtransactions for it to make sense to do it this way.  Moreover though, it would seem to reduce friction if it was percentage based - everybody pays the same portion and there is no penalty for transacting in small amounts.

Ok, that makes sense.

Perhaps there should be a message if you try to set it less than 0.5 that autopayout will stop?

I vouched for this way back when, since the website is still somewhat confusing on that part.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=26727.msg565318#msg565318 and a few posts above it.  Looks like he still hasn't gotten around to changing it to 0.1 minimum, nor placing a message when you don't do it "right".

Yeah, I remember your post about that.  The minimum really should be 0.1 and there should be some notice as to why you're not getting your payouts.  Instant pay would be nice too, but isn't that critical.

It's great that Litecoin now has its own logo, but I have to say that the color scheme is quite awful.  The "L" is quite muted and set against a very drab background color. Couldn't we come up with something better?  Maybe offer some LTC from the faucet to have someone design something catchy?
