4521  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi's identity on: December 29, 2018, 02:53:45 AM
Its best for everyone that we never know. I can imagine the mess it would cause to disclose this...

It might have been made by a single person or a group, as Bitcoin is borrowing on previous ideas, but it had to come in a way that couldn't be hampered or destroyed somehow, and he/she/they made it.

As with any good free open source project, it has carried on without the original author. We should be thankful of the spirit of the free open source software community, that had kept this going on and keep improving it for the future of humanity.

I was surprised since the Kano YTD on the home page was always higher than slush.  But I see that right now it is lower.  With the two soft months in a row on Kano, that drops the values down.  When we find a block, the Week, Month, quarter and YTD will probably be over slush again since we get paid hundreds (or thousands) of times more per miner Th.

Indeed. How about showing 2Y and 3Y results?

But in the end this is a bitcoin pool not a us dollar pool... You end with more bitcoins here! Smiley
4523  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: December 27, 2018, 12:56:53 AM

Code:
/usr/lib/lua/luci/model/cbi/cgminer.lua:297: default configuration not available, create /etc/cgminer.conf

How can i fix?

I have experienced that one before...
Try removing the package firmware from the web ui or from ssh with the command opkg remove firmware.

Please don't litter the streets with your fiat banknotes Smiley

Someone told me HK is sensitive with things falling of buildings, it is common to sue building owners when something falls off the structure, i'm not surprised there is a fine for throwing paper...

9.5TH @ 750W with this firmware. Temp: 50-60 °C.

You are only running two boards?

If i don’t pay my bill by the end of this month, i won’t have electricity the next, If i don’t have electricity, I won’t have miners powered up to have them running for the next month when the luck “could be excellent”.

It seems to me that you are unable to account for variance. So when it was high, you were supposed to save that extra income (above 100%) for the time when its low (below 100%), and because of that you need somebody else to do it for you (the PPS pool). Of course you are losing more in fees to that pool, and enter the risks associated with PPS pools...

Or, you did the mistake of spending the above 100% bonus immediately, a bonus you would have never received on PPS pools...

That said, over a given period of time (the longer the better) two identical asics mining in separate pools, one PPS and one PPLNS, the PPLNS one will earn (a little bit) more, even if you keep "grasshopper hoping" with the PPS asic or try to "game the luck".

If your mining operation is failing because the costs in America are now too high, you have other decisions to make rather than blame the pool or the luck: Either move to another country or shutdown (or buy a town powerplant, like Bitmain did), etc.

You can’t say that it is an advantage, simply because you never know when you crack a block, so it could be just when you were just starting to ramp up or when you almost ramped down after you left (if you decided to do so in a shorter term). And you may not hit any blocks while your ramp up is at its highest these days if you don’t stay for a long time. Roll Eyes

The whole point of this system is to deter people from doing just that (pool hopping). Once you are fully ramped up you could do things like take down a machine for cleaning and put it back up next day and hardly notice a dent in profit loss.

Also the frequency of the payments doesn't mean its paying less. If something, its paying little bit more (less tx).

You could get payments every day or every month, Does it matter if the sum of everyday payments in a month is equal to a monthly pay?
4528  Other / Off-topic / Re: Question. Country and use of bitcoin?? on: December 23, 2018, 04:10:29 AM
With the little I obtain from mining every month, I'm buying food and monthly basic living expenses which it barely covers. I can't afford anything else. I wanted to invest in more Asics but unfortunately the situation worsened in many ways.

4530  Other / Off-topic / Re: Life on Mars? on: December 23, 2018, 03:59:39 AM
There might be some microorganisms, but it seems that Mars lost its living things thousands of years ago, back when it lost most of its atmosphere. It also had rivers and oceans on the surface, now gone.

Who will colonize Mars first? that is an interesting question (and depends how do you "define" colonization). Just like the south pole, a few bases from some countries at most. If it is a private initiative, will it be like the Dutch back when a private company had actual colonies on earth?

4532  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: December 19, 2018, 05:47:41 PM
Can you give us install steps for the "alternative image flashable via Antminer web interface"?  That would be greatly appreciated.

If you own an S9:

In the Antminer web UI...
  • System -> Upgrade -> Flash new firmware image.

You won't get a backup of the factory firmware if you use this method...

To use the other method you don't need any "linux skills", you only need python installed, as the instructions clearly indicate here:
https://docs.braiins-os.org/#phase-2-permanently-migrating-from-factory-firmware-to-braiins-os

IIRC you will get a new mac address so your devices will probably need to be reconfigured for network again, and you might need to scan your network to find them again. No, the Bitmain tool won't work anymore, you need another network scanner (or check your router dhcp server). So consider doing this on site if you are not confident.
4533  Other / Off-topic / Re: Buying new Pc Vs adding ssd to actual Pc . on: December 19, 2018, 01:56:15 PM
I think replacing the HDD with the SSD would give you a nice speed boost. If the new laptop is just a newer gen cpu/gpu, i don't think you would experience that much improvement. More ram could be important depending on your projects though.

If the new laptop has something else, such as larger screen or keyboard that would help you get your work done faster, then sure go ahead.

When going pure SSD make sure your OS doesn't have any virtual memory or atime (both windows and linux can disable those), hence the more ram consideration. With SSDs, you want to reduce writes to a minimum.
4534  Other / Serious discussion / Re: 51% attack vulnerability could be more possible than ever, here's why. on: December 19, 2018, 12:05:53 PM
What's to stop BTC.com and an unknown hash source from jumping in and exploiting the relative increase in cost of mining BTC?
I don't think "Unknown" means a single entity. Do you assume that to be Bitmain? If we sum Antpool + BTC.com thats only 32,9 (from your graph).

Also as we can see from BTC.com, they have also lost hashrate together with the other pools:

Going from 9 to 6 Exa hashes per second, ie. they lost nearly 3000 Peta hashes per second in the last few months...

That said if you are a miner, consider switching to one of the smaller pools such as kano. It is safer and more transparent. It might pay less often (currently about every week or so), but in the long run it pays a tiny little bit more AND you help rebalance the network.
4535  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: December 19, 2018, 11:26:01 AM
running all my miners from sd cards, is there an advantage for flashing the firmware to the miner?

If you are happy with Braiins OS, you can free up your sd cards. If you do it using their python script, you get to keep a backup of the factory firmware which you can revert to at anytime later. Be sure to turn off, restore the jumper positions, and boot from internal NAND before attempting this.

So the main advantage is: you get your sd cards back Smiley
4536  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: December 19, 2018, 01:54:24 AM
I think I need to factory reset the miner back to default Braiins settings but I cant see how to do that? I used braiins-os_am1-s9_web_2018-11-27-0-c34516b0.tar.gz via the web panel from the Bitmain firmware to change over to Braiins.

To reset, simply remove the package "firmware". You can do this in the web ui or via ssh by issuing the command opkg remove firmware.

4538  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Should I do if my bitcoin has been stolen, and where should i complain ? on: December 19, 2018, 12:36:02 AM
Use offline wallets people, when you are your own bank, a little bit of responsibility is required on your part.

For "small change" amounts, sure keep it in your phone or pc, but if you are storing large sums, send them to an offline wallet.

That is, boot a live iso; create a wallet with electrum or whatever you like, write down those seed words! print the addresses, turn off the pc.
There, you have an offline wallet, anything you send to those addresses are safe.

Occasionally, rarely, when you want to move those funds: Boot the live iso again, install electrum or whatever you used again, write the seed words back, do the transaction, turn off the pc.

That's how its done. No fancy usb thingies required, just pen and paper, and backup that too manually and keep them in two physically separate places.

Also remember, online wallets, are always at risk. Be it exchanges, casinos or anywhere if your bitcoins are out of your hands; you are letting a third party be your bank...

Once stolen, your chances of recovering the funds are pretty low. You could try follow transactions or let your authorities do it if your country is crypto aware. If the funds hit an exchange, there is a chance you can get them frozen, but you would need to react very quickly.
4539  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is banning weapons such a good thing? on: December 18, 2018, 10:50:44 PM
My country has weapons banned. Its also the country with the highest violent (by guns) death rate per capita of the hemisphere. Only state armed forces are legally allowed to have weapons (it used to be possible to obtain a permit for civilians a couple of decades ago, now void).

Where do criminals get weapons and ammo now? From the black market and... said state forces either by corruption or by killing them.

I'm not going to say anyone should be allowed to buy guns, but banning them altogether doesn't appear to be the answer either, neither forcing everyone to wear one (that's absurd from all points of view).

Currently criminals have it easy: the civilians can't defend themselves. And the police has it worse, the criminals often outgun them, so they resort to bully tactics such as confront a gang of 10 with 500... (while tragically leaving half the city undefended in the process, where the other gangs take opportunity to act). You can imagine the collateral...

As the saying goes: "When weapons are outlawed, only outlaws wear weapons". There is also a lot of crime committed by members of state forces. Remember the corruption part? That doesn't make the situation any easier...

I am still offline but I still got a reward, though greatly diminished. but still nice to get something.

That's the PPLNS advantage, slow to ramp up, slow to ramp down...
