All hail scientific studies from questionable sources.

This from someone who no doubt takes the bible as "truth", even though it is rife with contradictions, which is understandable given its many authors and editors and outright fabricators. ( there are many histories of that book which can show what parts of that compilation come from [possible] original sources and which have been changed or added-in later... but of course anyone who would question the word of God must be automatically a "questionable source"... God wouldn't lie or play ticks right?

"I also gave them over to statutes that were not good and laws they could not live by; I let them become defiled through their gifts—the sacrifice of every firstborn—that I might fill them with horror so they would know that I am the LORD."  [Ezekiel 20:25-26]

Whoops!   Undecided

And that Old Testament God is nothing like a psychopath either.   Wink

 )

It is great to have a dogma to live by that allows you to do anything you want just by being selective over which verse you choose to follow in any given moment.

And what is even more wonderful is that it doesn't matter what you do... you just have to say you accept Christ as your Lord and Saviour and bingo you have won
yourself a first class seat in heaven!

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith . . . not by works." [Ephesians 2:8-9]

Woot!

One just needs to conveniently ignore other sections of that consistent and authoritative book of God:

"What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? . . .
Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." [James 2:14-17]

"Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done." [Revelation 22:12]

Note I am not attacking Christians here, or Christianity.  I know lots of Christians who are not intolerant hypocritical assholes...
and it is one of the worst kinds of hypocrite, isn't it, who condemns others as evil for not being a follower of Jesus while not
only not being able to do that himself but taking a righteous stance to refuse to even try.

~~~
"Behold, I am coming soon"?
How long ago did he say that?  That guy is as bad as MNW.    Wink
4563  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 6.66 Mark of the Beast!! ZOMG!!! on: June 30, 2012, 05:19:29 PM
LOL
So fuck all that compassion and love stuff.   If you are a true christian you can ignore things like the sermon on the mount and instead follow the ways of the old testament. You don't have to turn your cheek or be forgiving and instead attack non-christians as evil and encourage them to kill themselves if they disagree with you.
Okay got it.   Wink
But that is kinda lazy... aren't you supposed to completely destroy them yourself?
"When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. When the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. . . . This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.
     However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the Lord your God has commanded you." [ Deuteronomy 20:10-17 ]
A Christian cannot say what they truly feel? I'll be damned.
Damned? I don't know but what you say isn't very Christian.  I am surprised by how many so-called Christians never seem to make it out of the old testament and read the new one... The part that has the teachings of Jesus in it. I don't know how the old one can even be called Christian, since it came before Jesus and in a way the new testament is a repudiation of that mean spirited desert God of vengeance Yaweh, and instead talks about a God of Love.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [Matthew 5:9]
Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. [Matthew 5:39]
I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for
them which despite-fully use you, and persecute you; [Matthew 5:44]
If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to cast a stone at her. [John 8:7]
Do not judge, lest you too be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the
measure you use, it will be measured to you. [Matthew 7:1 & 2.]
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy [Matthew 5:7]
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.  [Matthew 6:15]
Whoops maybe you are damned, or at least your hypocrisy seems to have upset your Father.
I live in Texas and nearly everyone here confesses to faith in Christ, but I hardly see a single soul who's living a life in anticipation of any rapture.
Well I've met and seen fundamentalist Texans who very much are anticipating that, so that just shows that
people can have different experiences in the same arena and form differing opinions. I have not met and talked
to 'all' Texans and I doubt that you have either, so it would not be the thing for either of us to consider as
anything close to a certainty, much less "truth."
Quote
They simply have faith that God is taking care of His people. now unfortunately, I am of the opinion that they have forgotten about Jesus altogether. I don't know if you read the part where Jesus said, "Watch out! Don't let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don't let that day catch you unaware,"
You see that is a big problem for Christians. I would suggest you would be hard pressed to find any educated non-christians who
would regard the bible as "revealed truth" or the "word of God" anymore than they would regard in that way similar books and
collected tales, like the exploits of King Arthur; Hercules; or Cuchulainn.  Such books can of course contain important lessons,
on morality etc., and serve many psychological functions and needs, but are not meant to be history books or science texts.
Quote
Other than that, I disagree with most of what you said, but it's okay.. believe what you want.
Thanks, but ya know, agnosticism and similar philosophies are about trying 'not' to bind oneself
to any particular belief... rather trying to see what is front of ones nose as clearly as possible
and making the best decisions in the here and now moment...  something like learning to rely
on ones own intelligence rather than the dogma of people who lived thousands of years ago.
But that's just trying to explain the ways I favor and not trying to get you or anyone to join me.
Quote
I do agree that evangelism is not really the way of God. It's more of a private thing. but even Jesus agreed, when He said to go hide from others when you pray. However, this is not praying, this is witnessing or stating the truth which I feel compelled to do.
You mentioned the word "faith"... and that's what religion is all about isn't it. It is an inner and very personal compulsion,
and yes 'private' like you say; not based on externalities and scientific facts etc.. That is not to dismiss it or say it does not
have value, but rather that it is not something to try and impose on others who have their own paths to follow in their own way.
4567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 6.66 Mark of the Beast!! ZOMG!!! on: June 29, 2012, 09:03:24 PM
Some Christians are so obsessed with armageddon, that they are actually trying to make it happen!
My Messiah said "11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many."
When has that not been true?
Quote
The Christians, if anything, wish it wouldn't happen, cause the hell we have to go through...
Many Christians, mostly of the fundamentalist variety, seemingly can't wait for Armageddon because that will be the time when they will get "raptured" up to
heaven to be with Jesus and so will avoid all the nastiness of this material realm ( and which is why the State of Israel gets more support from American
fundamentalists than they do from even American Jews ). That's what many of you Christians have been told by some of those "false prophets" and the like
even though I am not sure that rapture stuff is even in that Bible of yours... which btw was compiled by Romans ( Bishop Iraneus etc. ) for reasons of
politically expedience and is not history, or meant to be taken literally...  but you are free to do so as long as you don't try to force your beliefs on others.
These are just my opinions of course and I don't expect you or anyone else to accept it when I am quite agnostic about such things myself.
I do however find it very unprofessional and childish of Voorhees to engage in religious trolling with threads like this... and I would suggest it would be
best to not to try and argue with the "unbelievers", as you perhaps regard them, since they just want to make fun of you and your beliefs. Jesus
never did ask for his followers to go out and make a nuisance of themselves by trying to convert people. The whole "Christ" thing ( Jesus was not
the first who attained to the Christos, nor will he be the last, according to what I have learned in many years of comparative religious studies and
the like )  was originally meant as a school of the mysteries for only a few followers who were called to such a path... not something for everyone.
The whole evangelical thing is part of the distortion of the message of the early Christian mystics...  so everyone should just relax and try and
tolerate others.
LaVey Satanism is extreme individualism.
AynRandism is extreme individualism.
Hence the connection I guess.
> Perhaps most are unaware of the connection, though LaVey wasn’t shy about admitting his debt to his inspiration. “I give people Ayn Rand with trappings,” he once told the Washington Post. On another occasion he acknowledged that his brand of Satanism was “just Ayn Rand’s philosophy with ceremony and ritual added.” Indeed, the influence is so apparent that LaVey has been accused of plagiarizing part of his “Nine Satanic Statements” from the John Galt speech in Rand’s Atlas Shrugged.
Devotees of Rand may object to my outlining the association between the two. They will say I am proposing “guilt by association,” a form of the ad hominem fallacy. But I am not attacking Rand for the overlap of her views with LaVey’s; I am saying that, at their core, they are the same philosophy. LaVey was able to recognize what many conservatives fail to see: Rand’s doctrines are satanic. <
4572  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: www.fiveminutecoin.com!What do you think about the new version? on: June 22, 2012, 05:08:06 PM
I'm having a problem. Earlier today I waited the 300 seconds and requested coins as usual. But the coins I had still showed up as “0.0” and it told me “There are no coins available!” Just now I tried again, and it tells me I've hit the limit for my IP even though I haven't even gotten any coins in well over 12 hours.
Edit: And now the 12-hour timer seems to have reset again. What's going on? The only time it should reset is when I actually get coins…
I've had that happen too but I thought it got fixed because it hasn't happened in a while for me...
perhaps because I don't usually wait the whole five minutes anymore?
I think what seems to be happening is that the 12-hour count restarts every time a request for coins is attempted, whether it actually succeeds or not. The code should be changed so that the restart only occurs on success.
Hey,
I`m sorry for the late response..
I was working on these problems today and there were some (session variable) bugs. I hope it is gone now and this solves all your problems.
Usually your ip is written to the database only if your coinrequest is successfull..
There is also a UserState panel on the right which shows you how long you have to wait until the next request can be sent.
If these problems still occur please post it here again. Or even better.. send me an email (info@fiveminutecoin.com) Wink
Nope, got the "Maybe you didn't wait" message again...
As for Ayn Rand...better to attack the person than the philosophy right?
Oh come on!  Those links were all about criticizing her "philosophy." It isn't like it is name calling and suggesting we should reject her views because the writers think she is ugly, stinks and talks with a funny accent.  One of the few places it even touches on her personal life is where it points out how she can't even live up to her own convictions:
"I wonder how many would continue to worship at the shrine of Ayn Rand if they knew that towards the end of her life she signed on for both Medicare and social security."
Which surely tells us something about her philosophy and not just her since such hypocrisy seems not uncommon among Randians.
How do you explain how so many who follow Any Rand also call themselves Christians? How does one reconcile Atlas Shrugged with the Sermon on the Mount for example?
But nevermind... if this thread is going to get into discussions of Any Rand's ideas I will bow out... I think I would rather debate evolution with fundamentalists...
And I do see how one's own well-being is dependent on the well-being of others. All boats rise with the tide. So if one person is able to make a buttload on a Bitcoin service and I start my own service and that person's buttload of Bitcoins gets others to use Bitcoin then I benefit. It would also encourage others to start their own Bitcoin businesses in order to prosper as well. And with that comes competition and better/cheaper services. So yes, someone making huge profits does contribute to my well-being.
Greed does not isolate, it leads us all to prosperity.
To not be greedy would mean that we do not work for reward. If you do not work for reward you will avoid work. If nobody works, we all die.
It seems that idea has been expressed more than once already.  Fergalish, in answer to that it seems, has some other great questions. Why don't any of you greedsters have a go at answering those?
Just tried it again now and got the "Maybe you didnt wait!?" message. It has been well over 12 hours since I last tried because your site was down when I tried it yesterday.
And the slider on the right shows: How long do I have to wait for the next payout? 0 Minutes
Please try it again one more time.. it should be fixed now?!
Nope, got the "Maybe you didn't wait" message again.  It's a sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't kind of thing.
Did it arrive?
Yes I got it when it seemed to be doing nothing ( no "payment sent" message ). There are still those other times when it gives that message about not waiting long enough when I have and the slider on the right confirms that I have.
An individual's primary moral obligation is to achieve his own well-being—it is for his life and his self-interest that an individual ought to adhere to a moral code.
Can't you see how in many ways ones own well-being is dependent on the well-being of others?
Greed is only good for isolating oneself from the world and perpetuating social pathologies.
Quote
"I swear—by my life and my love of it—that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine." -Ayn Rand
This quote, which some other forum member uses as a sig, I find much better:
"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers
It seems you still have got a lot of bugs.  Many times when I press the submit button after inputting an address and doing the captcha it either does nothing or gives me a message that I didn't wait long enough. I know I waited long enough and the "user state" slider thing on the right confirms that I waited long enough and am not using a proxy.  By waiting long enough I mean both waiting 12 hours and waiting for the timer to get below 250.
/edit:  Maybe it was sent and it just didn't put up the message that it was sent? Will wait to see if 0.01 arrives.
meme: /meem/ [By analogy with "gene"] Richard Dawkins's term for an idea considered as a replicator, especially with the connotation that memes parasitise people into propagating them much as viruses do...
I find it a rather lame materialistic theory myself along with most of the genetic determinism stuff [ selfish gene etc. ] Dawkins writes about.
But most people misuse the term and this is off topic so nm...   Tongue
