461  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [FS] Open air case for BTC/LTC mining on: May 25, 2013, 05:15:06 PM
This seems quite nice, but I've always been weary of using open-air cases. They're too susceptible to damage from being dropped, dropping something on them, or other things. (Cats) IMO, it's best to keep those expensive components within a regular case for their protection.

After-all, you can get equally good if not better cooling by using some of those huge yet silent fans that push so much air that they essentially constantly replace all of the air inside the case. Tongue

That's just me, though.

Yeah, running naked isn't for everyone.   Wink   Its not easy to setup a rig with ribbon cables in a conventional case.

I am interested in one of these.

Does this design require the use of a riser cable?

Edit - nevermind, I think this answers my question...

...where GPUs are mounted "floating"/above the motherboard via ribbon cables.

The use of risers/ribbon cables are not required.  You can use this like a "normal" motherboard tray by simply not attaching the "floating GPU beam" and adjusting the height of the expansion card beam.

I can make more of these.   Grin

I've been building open air "trays" for mining rigs for a while now i.e. where GPUs are mounted "floating"/above the motherboard via ribbon cables.

Scroll down through this thread.  Or just checkout my website: Spotswood Computer Cases.

Here's the "mining tray":

Here's what it looks like with an ATX motherboard mounted (not included):

Two standard ATX PSUs can be mounted inside that open area on the left-hand side of the tray.

These can be stacked with an optional set of extra posts for $5.

Price does not include USPS/UPS shipping charge (from New Hampshire, USA).

PayPal only.

That's fairly neat.
My only 2c would be that at that height my cards wouldn't be cool enough. (if you want to stack them)

Increasing the height of the posts would be an easy "customization."   Grin

Here's a simpler, less expensive version ($85USD), for those mining multiple GPUs connected via ribbon cables:

The GPU support beam is included with this tray.

Since there are many noob miners these days, I though I'd resurrect this thread, especially since I've made many improvements to the original design, added an "open frame" version and now offer a very simple tray for those not using riser cables.

There is a new user stuck in newbie forum jail asking to purchase these, so I'm cc:g the URL here:

how many can you stack before it becomes unstable?

I'm guessing... 6-10?

Hi good sir, may I ask how many of these you have sold?

Not that many.  Most have gone to F@H-ers.

I have to agree that DIY rigs are the best way to go, the functionality to cost ratio can't be matched by any testbench you can purchase. I will say that I built a few rigs with this case; http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/3509/lian_li_pitstop_t60_open_air_test_bench/index.html, I had a couple laying around that I had used for hardware testing. Works great for mining and I like how compact it is. You can find them for around $70 on ebay, but for the price you may as well put the money toward a better GPU

But you can't spread-out or raise your GPUs with any of those "stock" benches.

I think my tech trays, specifically designed for mining and F@H rigs, are the best.

Updated pics of the larger size tray.

Here's what the expansion card support beam/clamp looks like:
