461  Other / Meta / Re: 8 BTC loan request on: January 28, 2012, 12:57:32 PM
That's an awsome job sieving out the compromised accounts, Theymos. Thumbs up!
Do you think we can we make a warning sticky out of this thread in a more visible place than Meta?

All I can say is, don't re-purpose passwords, damn it! Roll Eyes
At the very least add a pseudo-random suffix to the "core password" if you really can do no better:
Code:
1dJpoorpassword
bB4poorpassword
UxTpoorpassword
...
This approach will save you against a leaked password list being tested across multiple servers. Only three additional characters to remember in this example.

Also, it's not prudent to use the same username everywhere. Not only does this greatly simplify password attacks but it is also a hazard to your internet privacy.
Try adding some variation here as well, k? E.g.
Code:
jim
jimmy
jimbo
...
That significantly raises the bar for any attacker trying to track you across different servers.
462  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: What is the best linux, amd driver and cgminer combo right now? on: January 28, 2012, 11:28:50 AM
You sure about SDK 2.1?  I don't think cgminer will run unless it has 2.4...
The SDK version necessary depends solely on your cards: 2.1 supports all 5xxx cards but some 6xxx require at least 2.4.
The 7970 won't run without SDK 2.6.
463  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is this setup viable? Some calculation inside on: January 28, 2012, 11:15:33 AM
You won't be earning more that 88$(1) a month, mostly due to stale/invalid shares. Likely you'll make even less than that.
You'll make less than that for sure should you choose a pool with mining fees.

It's crucial that you take the slow-but-steady path to overclocking the card - if you crank it too high and it becomes unstable the amount of downtime might be significant.

I'd go with the 6990 as it's both faster and more energy efficient than a 7970.
Should you choose to proceed with bitcoin mining and purchase a second 6990 card, that PSU of yours will need to be upgraded.

Notes:
(1) This value should be accurate as it's based on my own earnings, scaled proportionally down to fit a 750MHash/s rig.
464  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New here low Mhash/s with gtx 550 on: January 28, 2012, 10:42:42 AM
I started out with GTX 260 (40-60 MHPS) and a GTX 560 (100-150 MHPS). From reading these forums for about a month or so, I realized the Nvidia cards were terrible for mining but I wanted to get an idea of Bitcoin mining before I bought an ATI. I was mining with these GTX cards when BTC was trading at $2 USD (LOL!) and losing about a dollar a day or so.
It doesn't work that way buddy. If you purchased a half-decent mining card as soon as you realized the mistake you had made, you would not have been pouring money down the drain in the first place.

Once I got a hang for the software, pools, hardware, etc with the Nvidia cards, I went out and bought ATI.
That makes it sound as if mining with AMD cards is somehow magically harder than with nVidia cards... that's the costly approach again, you needed to switch ASAP.

The only piece of advice I can give the OP is, grab some AMD cards ASAP and when they arrive sell your nVidias to recover some funds quickly.
465  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [95 GH/s] BitMinter.com [Zero Fee, Hopper Safe, Merged Mining, Tx Fees Paid Out] on: January 27, 2012, 07:47:47 PM
I regret to say I have lost all confidence in ABCPool.
If ABCPool had been pool hopping all the time, it's safe to presume that the ops made a shitload of bitcoins behind the scenes. Damned greed.
Of course, if there were no proportional idiots pools in the first place, none of that shit would be possible.

467  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Fake volt change? on: January 27, 2012, 09:32:36 AM
If the card confirmed 0.1V core voltage and didn't crash instantly, it's obviously lying.

The first thing I do when undervolting is set the minimal core voltage specified by the manufacturer, like 0.95V. If the card is still running and the temperature didn't budge there's just no talking with this particular VRM, no matter what voltage the device is reporting.

I've also seen some weirdness when going from 1.2V downto 1.105V results in no change at all but going to 1.1V automagically drops the temp by 5°C. That means this specific VRM only accepts a few discrete values which you're going to have to identify by hand.
468  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Help me mine optimally with these cards! on: January 27, 2012, 08:57:15 AM
There is a problem with how Windows looks up libraries, though: if one is already present in memory it will be used system-wide by default, without doing any look-ups.

Unfortunately, I have no windows-powered rigs and don't need the downtime required for swapping them hard drives out and dabbling with Windows.
Still, I would gladly help if a bounty was offered. Just a handful of Bitcoins if I'm successful, to reimburse me for the downtime-caused revenue loss and the necessity of subjecting my rig to Redmond-based software Wink
Interested?
469  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: need advice on: January 27, 2012, 04:08:33 AM
Negligible.
Is it so hard to get a quick glance around this subforum BEFORE making a purchase?

Unless you have "free electricity", you'll be burning money.
470  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: GPUs won't mine at full capacity when all of them are on on: January 27, 2012, 03:50:16 AM
Firstly, you're most probably not even close to 700W. My Sapphire 6770s used to draw 110W each when clocked at 995/300.
Secondly, a power issue will result in stability loss or a shutdown of either the overloaded rails or the whole PSU.

An overheat could very well cause a drop in hash rate but that would likely only affect the overheated cards.

What temperatures are the cards mining at? That's an important piece of information when debugging a multi-gpu rig.
Check the CPU usage, as already suggested.

What operating system, driver version, SDK version and which miner are you using?
471  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 6950 1gb shader unlock? on: January 27, 2012, 02:54:42 AM
If I use my gaming card to mine, that will be damaged?
Care to re-formulate that question?
Are you asking whether using the card to calculate SHA-256 hashes as opposed to using the card for DirectX calculations in your video game of choice will somehow damage the device?
Come on... the hardware it's not going to blow up in your face just because you use is to process one data set instead of another.

You will damage the card if you're constantly overheating it, no matter what application the overheat situation is caused by.
472  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [419 GH] Eligius pool: ~0Fee SMPPS, no reg, RollNtime, hop OK, BTC+NMC merged! on: January 27, 2012, 02:05:55 AM
Don't troll. Eligius is pro-P2SH (BIP 17).

BIP17 is OP_CHV, not OP_P2SH - as you well know.
Be straight: Eligius is pro-BIP17 and therefore anti-BIP16, am I correct?
473  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: APU + discrete question on: January 27, 2012, 01:45:12 AM
OP, you are aware than laptops are not engineered for this kind of usage?
That heat will not only shorten the life of the APU, it will also damage the fan having to run at full speed.
I suggest you reconsider your plan of using a laptop as a mining rig.

It's been a tough day.

Pardon me for trying to make sure he's actually connecting to the server he thinks he is.
A failed DB connection is what I'd expect from a hastily coded fake site.
476  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER miner overclock monitor fanspeed RPC in C linux/windows/osx 2.1.2 on: January 27, 2012, 01:26:24 AM
Nah, I don't need that. Always been donating straight to Con's address.
Still, that's a commendable enterprise.
477  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [340 GH] ABCPool PPS - you should join now! <0.1% invalids & immediate payouts! on: January 27, 2012, 01:19:36 AM
When I go to ABCPool.co I get:
Access denied for user 'www-data'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
Can you ping ABCPool.co?
On a Windows box go start -> run -> cmd
In the text-mode window type
Code:
ping www.abcpool.co
and post results.
EDIT:: You should come up with the adress 107.21.24.13

...All in all it's a mindfuck of epic proportions.
Never did any GPU programming and now I hope I won't ever have to.
If the lane IDs are getting screwed up that's likely due to some insane PCIE line multiplexing and redriving being done by some board designs...

There, Conman, a little something has just been sent your way.
480  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Found new(?) Miner, need help! on: January 26, 2012, 10:33:27 PM
There is no magical miner anywhere
I disagree.
I agree, however, that this thread belongs in off-topic and that Loup has outdone his usual self this time.

Since you're a fellow EU citizen, dani, I really hope you never broke any fucktarded CompuCrime laws...
That's New-fraking-World Order at its best Angry

In my neck of the woods, logging into a third party's machine with valid credentials (e.g. released due to a database leak) that you weren't supposed to come into possession of is enough for charges to be pressed. Not enough perhaps to ensure conviction but no public prosecutor will hesitate as to whether or not they have a case.
