4661  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Another warning for every NEWBIE! on: May 19, 2022, 03:23:12 AM
Since you brought up Luna I thought it was Luna related but you just repeated what everyone else has said a million times. A better warning would have been to avoid centralized altcoins with no purpose such as Luna that try to fool people into thinking that they are useful, stable, offer this and that utility, etc. while they remain useless and their price can dump significantly simply because they have no value.
4662  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core wallet.dat file containing 3.5 BTC + Password Hint on: May 19, 2022, 03:11:37 AM
I assume there's no way to check if the encrypted parts of a wallet.dat aren't rigged or otherwise made up without knowing the correct encryption passphrase?
Not if the scammers modified the file correctly. For example I suppose they could just create a wallet with bitcoin core and encrypt it with a strong password then go back and start modifying the result by injecting the address that doesn't belong to the wallet so that if you look inside you see the address and think it is real. In that case the file content would look legitimate.
4663  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why rely on a single hash function? on: May 19, 2022, 03:03:17 AM
i think you might be assuming sha256 is a one-way function. it might not be. and thus there could be an easy way to reverse it that no one ever though of yet.
It is and it will always be impossible to reverse hashes until the end of time, this is even true for non-cryptographic hash functions like MurmurHash. That's for a very simple reason: math.

To put simply if I told you I had a two digit number and I added its digits to get 10 you will not be able to figure out what that number was until the end of time. You can guess other numbers that give the same result like 10 or 46 or 55,... (ie. find collision) but you will never be able to "reverse" the operation to know what number I really used.

Now imagine if the result (10) wasn't so small and was 256 bit instead and I wasn't just doing x+y and was doing a lot more operations to get the final result. That's what happens in a hash function. Due to chaotic and irreversible nature of each operation it is never going to be possible to reverse it.

Code:
6.6%   of the supply has not moved for 7 to 10 years
I fall into this category Cheesy
Which is what I always tell those who mention "lost coins" that they are talking about my coins too and they are not lost at all. I just have no reason to move that part of my coins.

Quote
despite the massive drop in its evaluation against the dollar
To be fair, when speaking of long term, there has never been any "massive drops" ever. There is only constant rising in long term. For example in 2014 price was $300 and today it is $30000 and I don't see any "massive drop" in this 100x rise.
4665  Economy / Economics / Re: Who will Replace Russian Gas Supplies to Europe? on: May 18, 2022, 06:42:09 AM
People keep suggesting Iran in this topic but they just focus on the capacity Iran has and some random statements published in the media. I don't think it is going to happen for a single reason: lack of incentive.

Iran simply has no reason to replace Russian gas in Europe because years ago the plan to export gas to EU was on the table and the incentive was also there for Iran since the economy was a lot smaller than today but EU didn't agree with it for reasons that are off-topic here.
Today Iran's exports are at an all time high and the cost of energy is rapidly rising which means the energy parts of exports Iran already has are generating a lot more money already.

However, I think it will eventually happen. Maybe in a year from now when the incentive is massive and energy prices have reached the highest they can.
It's basically like JCPOA, when US abandoned it in 2018 Iran already had the upper hand shortly after but the come back was prolonged to gain even a higher upper hand (From 3.67% enrichment to 60% with a massive stockpile). The agreement still won't be reached since Iran's position keeps getting stronger so an even bigger incentive is required!

Not to mention that Iran's strategy was changed in 2019 from Maximum Resistance to Maximum Pressure. The shoe is on the other foot Wink
4666  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: UST Stable coin depegs from dollar USD may Crash BTC,cause crypto death spiral on: May 18, 2022, 06:26:34 AM
Doing this may cause the crypto death spiral and it means that there will be a panic selling and could just collapse Bitcoin
I hope this has given you (and other newbies like you) some very valuable experience that shitcoins dumping is never going to cause any major changes in bitcoin price since it is now 7 days later and bitcoin price is exactly where it was when the shitcoin called Luna first started dumping hard.
This is not the first time it happens either. There have been other big shitcoins, bigger than Luna, that got dumped hard and people thought bitcoin would follow. Not to mention that bitcoin price is not high because of some shitcoin! It is high because of real adoption, unlike the shitcoins themselves that exist because of bitcoin.
4667  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin has no future as a payments network, says FTX chief on: May 18, 2022, 05:37:56 AM
I think Sam Bankman-Fried is one of the most intelligent founders in the cryptospace,
Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the digital asset exchange FTX, said the proof of work system of validating blockchain transactions,
This very "intelligent" person doesn't still know that proof of work has nothing to do with validating transactions Cheesy

In any case I'm very curious about what alternative he is supporting and whether his centralized exchange is introducing yet another centralized shitcoin like their counterparts that is supposedly "better than bitcoin"...
4668  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Deleting Electrum wallet on: May 18, 2022, 05:17:39 AM
If you use shift+deleted instead of delete the file is going to be permanently deleted too.
You can always recover your wallet using your seed phrase which you should have written down when you created the wallet as Electrum forces you to do in one of the wallet creation steps.
4669  Economy / Economics / Re: Wheat War I is going to be World War III on: May 18, 2022, 04:38:52 AM
Please add 8 more points to the general list of problems - Russia is actively stealing grain from Ukrainian storage facilities located in the temporarily occupied territories.
That's part of the first point, whenever one country invades another they usually steal their resources too. For example as we speak US is stealing more than 80% of Syrian oil.

There is no denying that world is effected by these two countries conflicts but still not this much as you prostrating it. Because there is always a conflict between different nation either they are from European side or from eastern countries the war always continues. The bitter thing is  that hypocritic media is overly covering it as a biggest conflict and creating a mess for everyone although there are bigger issue out there and many countries already loss millions of peoples but they didn't cover it like this.
you only pointed few countries and prostrating this matter as WORLD crisis is a fool act. The world has too many other problem yet to solve and this matter is not even close.
You are absolutely correct about other wars but the difference is the involvement. For example when the bloodthirsty Western coalition invaded Afghanistan and killed innocent people their countries weren't involved and wasn't affected, just their troops. In Ukraine they are all involved, they are sending covert troops, they are sending billions of dollars worth of equipment to Ukraine, their imports and exports are directly affected,...
For example this war has cost US at least $60 billion so far which is about two times higher than their cost when they invaded Afghanistan ($7 trillion in 20 years, that's 29 billion a month).

I am really confused as to how exactly this is going to lead to a wheat war? I really do not see wheat as the only food source available to humans
Well it is not just wheat, it is basic food stuff. Have you noticed that cooking oil is also scarce and/or has much higher price? That's because the supply of other products are also lower.
Have you noticed meat prices have also gone up and in some countries they are saying they soon have to put their livestock down because they can't provide their food? That's another case which would also affect dairy products too.
What else is left? Fruits and vegetables. That's covered by the scarcity of fertilizers.

As I said before, we are not yet at crisis levels but things are escalating towards that and with mismanagement we could face crisis very soon.

but they can't export some of it as a result of sanctions and embargoes.
What sanctions and embargoes? As long as they are paying Russia in Ruble to import their oil and gas and other things, there is no sanctions and embargoes. That means if Russia is not selling food to the same countries (in EU) that are buying their energy, they are doing it on purpose.

It seems that you have a favorable bias towards Russia underlying your whole post, yet Russia is the one that started this global food crisis because of the totally unnecessary war with Ukraine
I have no bias towards the country that caused one of the biggest starvation in my country's history during WWII. We were neutral in that war.
We are discussing the effects of the war on global food security not the war itself or whether or not it was necessary. We could discuss that in another topic if you like!
4670  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 44 countries will meet in El Salvador to discuss Bitcoin on: May 17, 2022, 04:05:14 PM
Are you sure about that? I don't think interest is allowed in Islam. Googling it finds plenty of sources saying it isn't.
Yes. For example banks in Islamic Republic of Iran do give interest on the money you have in your bank account and there are loans and mortgages that you have to pay interest on. A lot like any other bank.

This means that earning interest (riba) is not allowed
There is a difference between interest and riba. The former is a profit that is agreed upon by both parties and is paid at predefined intervals but the later is a profit that the lender decides on and enforces and can change at any time. The later is not allowed not the former.

The other difference is (I suppose) that the bank is obligated to invest the money into the economy.
Other than that there is a lot of technical details that I'm not informed enough to explain.
4671  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 44 countries will meet in El Salvador to discuss Bitcoin on: May 17, 2022, 10:05:35 AM
Besides that, Pakistan is an Islamic nation that respects Sharia law. And according to Sharia law, crypto is forbidden.
You have to realize that there are different fractions of Islam. For example there are extremists namely Saudi Arabia regime, the birthplace of ISIS, AlQuaide, etc. who practice what is commonly known as radical Islam. Who knows what they think about crypto, they still nail people to the cross in the middle of their streets.
Then there are more moderate ones (Shia and Sunni) like Iran and even though there may be some difference of opinions but what I've gathered majority of them say bitcoin is halal if used for anything halal. In other words if you receive a payment for an honest job in bitcoin, there is no problem.

4672  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Empty blocks on: May 17, 2022, 08:19:23 AM
firstly. i was dismissing the fud that pools like viabtc do not own a full node and only have a litewallet to their name'(SPV).. as that FUD is completely factually incorrect.. the myth that pools only own litewallets(SPV) was done so to create some propagandist FUD that pools are dirty, nasty, dangerous to the network (a rhetoric being passed around for the last 7years)
I hope you are not confusing SPV mining with running a SPV client.

Doing SPV mining doesn't mean the pool is running a SPV client. That just means that they run a full node but they have modified it to postpone full verification of the blocks or the headers they receive and only verify the header just like a SPV client would and then build on that.

They could also do "spy mining" where they spy on other pools to be able to get the new header even faster and build on top of that without receiving the block or the header through the P2P network.
4673  Economy / Speculation / Re: What was the most deceitful speculation you ever fell for on: May 17, 2022, 08:11:14 AM
Someone telling you a shitcoin is going to pump to an arbitrary price is not a speculation, it is manipulation to create a pump so that they can sell their bags and get some of the money they've lost due to the previous dumps back.

As for bitcoin, if you are buying it so that it reaches X dollars after Y days then you are already doing it wrong and you are deceiving yourself.
4674  Economy / Economics / Re: Wheat War I is going to be World War III on: May 17, 2022, 07:56:57 AM
A large portion of North Africa and Middle East import their wheat.
West Asia or Middle East as you call it is already having problem with scarcity, why do you think we tightened our borders, they were stealing flour and selling it over the border for a whopping 10x profit! That forced the government to increase the flour price by a lot then give people the cash difference in their bank accounts.

But the difference with Europe and the reason why I focused on it is because the countries in West Asia that are facing the problems (Syria, Afghanistan, Lebanon,...) are all used to these problems. Their countries are already torn apart by decades long wars and food was already scarce. Europeans on the other hand have not experienced this and aren't expecting it.

US is all fine here!
I wouldn't say "fine" considering the inflation has been rising a lot in US ever since the conflict. Not to mention the money they are spending in Ukraine publicly and privately and through weapons donation has to come from somewhere.

If Russia does not agree, then the US Sixth Fleet, which is now in the Mediterranean, is ready to enter the Black Sea to ensure the safety of navigation in this region.
I seriously doubt that. US strategy over the past ~50 years ever since Vietnam defeat was to not get involved in conflicts as much as possible and only fight by arming proxies, separatists and extremists, specially if they are facing an actual adversary.
On top of that with the deplorable living situations that US marines have on the seas that has led to numerous suicides I don't think they are even combat ready.
4675  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My first novice view towards Bitcoin on: May 17, 2022, 05:51:42 AM
Your story is another sad commentary of what has been going on for as long as bitcoin existed. Unfortunately there are always some people who introduce bitcoin to others as something you can buy to make profit! But bitcoin is not a money making machine. It is a currency that is decentralized and is meant to be used as an alternative payment system to the existing centralized payment systems that are filled with numerous issues.
The price and its long term rise (not short term like 2 days!) is only an additional benefit of this currency that unlike any other currencies has a limited supply.
4676  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 44 countries will meet in El Salvador to discuss Bitcoin on: May 17, 2022, 03:41:32 AM
It's funny to see keyboard warriors from their basement make fun of countries trying to improve their economy just because their GDP is low.
In any case @romero121 pointed out something interesting that seems to have gone unnoticed. In the list there are countries that have really banned bitcoin like Bangladesh. Nobody has anything to say about that?! They are all going to a place where bitcoin is going to be one of the main topics of discussion. Is it going to reverse their decision on the ban?

Nobody would visit a nation that is unsecured that means the Bitcoin city might not attract tourists.
About a year ago someone on Reddit claimed that foreigners have already been coming to El Salvador and made investment there before bitcoin adoption. Many migrated from countries such as Sweden to live there and their security was good enough. The crimes are usually focused in certain parts of the country.

I believe Bitcoin City project could also attract more foreign investment which seems to be what they hope for too although I wish someone from El Salvador was on bitcointalk and could give us better information.
4677  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Terra Usdt vs BTC price corellation on: May 17, 2022, 03:13:03 AM
Historically whenever there is a massive shitcoin dump that is covered in the media a lot, bitcoin price has been affected by it. That still doesn't create a correlation between bitcoin price and shitcoins specially centralized ones. After all we are seeing a market with many weak hands waiting for an excuse to make an irrational decision.
In case of Terra it was a combination of both panic sell and their liquidation that helped the already falling price to go a tiny bit lower.
4678  Economy / Economics / Re: Wheat War I is going to be World War III on: May 16, 2022, 11:48:07 AM
What?I don't know about France telling Ukraine to give up defending. This is probably fake news.
You can argue about the reasons behind the suggestion but not the news itself since it is direct quotes from Ukraine's president Zelensky, unless you think the comedian is lying.
He claims that French President Emmanuel Macron has been pressuring him to yield a lot of territories to Russia.
I believe this is the origin of the news:
https://www.uawire.org/zelensky-macron-suggested-to-make-concessions-on-ukraine-s-sovereignty-to-help-putin-save-face#

Quote
I think that you are exaggerating a little bit.
Not a little bit, I'm theorizing the worse case scenario while wishing something a lot less happens to our world.

Quote
I don't expect global starvation, but food will become more and more expensive for sure.
One reason why I mentioned the worse case scenario and global starvation is that production everywhere is decreased due to a much lower supply of fertilizers which is something I haven't seen any analysts out there even consider! You see farmers need fertilizers so that the soil can handle more production and more frequent production. Otherwise the soil won't have enough nutrition in it to help the crops grow.
So we have a combination of decreased imports, decreased domestic production and at the same time we have an increased consumption. This sounds a lot like a recipe for disaster.
4679  Economy / Economics / Wheat War I is going to be World War III on: May 16, 2022, 09:49:52 AM
The global food situation is worsening every second and in a month or two could lead to mass unrest followed by regimes suppressing the violence and eventually a wider war between countries stealing each other's food supplies to ease their domestic unrest, something similar but worse than what we saw during the first months of pandemic where Europeans countries were stealing from each other to ease their own crisis.

Let's take a quick look at a series of events:
1. Russia and Ukraine are two big producers, Russia invades and production is ceased in Ukraine.
2. Russia is sanctioned to put economic pressure on them so their exports to 99% of the world is completely stopped
3. Other producers like India follow this trend and stop their exports
4. Price of food soars as scarcity is now a serious threat
5. Other countries are embracing for the crisis by trying desperately to increase their own production but fertilizer exports are also ceased so the domestic production has also decreased significantly in most countries.
6. China is mass purchasing any food (wheat, etc.) that are found in the world and is also pre-purchasing future production (as much as anybody would sell them) at high prices.
7. France is already telling Ukraine to give up defending so that maybe they can avert food crisis themselves!

The real question is how would each country handle this crisis. And at what scale is the conflicts going to break?

In West Asia we are producing most of our needs already but the pressure is still felt here. The biggest problem we are facing is the neighbors. The borders are already being tightened as we speak to handle immigration and prevent illegal exports that are basically stealing food!

Correct me if I'm wrong but Europe seems to be highly dependent on imports when it comes to basic food (wheat, oil, live-stock feed, etc.) and others and the supply has decreased while the prices are soaring.
US doesn't seem to be doing well either as they are currently trying to rob Ukraine and transfer all their wheat supply to reduce the crisis US itself is facing through the western border while Russia is still busy in the east and south and the world isn't looking.

This is starting to feel like WWII already when the Allies invaded India for example and how Churchil stole their food and starved more than 3 million Indians to death. The difference however is that the option to invade East to survive their European War aka WWII is no longer there for the West, so my guess would be a lot of conflict between different countries in Europe if the food crisis worsens, NATO falling apart and eventual mass migration towards East.
4680  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it possible to know amount of live full-nodes running? on: May 16, 2022, 07:08:19 AM
We are talking about a peer to peer network that is decentralized so there is no easy way of knowing the accurate number of full nodes. However, we can still come up with a good estimation.

People already introduced bitnodes.io, what they do is that they simply run a node and list those nodes that are reachable or in other words the nodes that accept incoming connection. This number has always been lower than the total number of nodes that also includes nodes that do not accept incoming connection.
Counting the second group of nodes is harder because they have to initiate the connection to the counter and they may never connect to that node ever ergo the counter may never know about them.

Think of it this way, there are nodes A, B, C, D, E, F and only A and B are accepting incoming connection. This means when C and D connect to A they will find out about B too (through gossip protocol) but B will never know about C and D unless they also connect to B since it has no reason to know about them and A doesn't tell others about C and D whereas it does tell everyone about B. Same with E and F that connect to B and A will never know about them.
In this case if node B is a counter node, it would think there is only 3 nodes in total: A, E and F.
On the other hand bitnodes.io type counter only knows about A and B since they only look for "reachable nodes" which are nodes that their "crawler" can connect to so they can never connect to C, D, E or F so they are never counted.

Others have attempted to count all nodes using different techniques:
