I do not think people are getting addictive because of the profit they can make, I think they are getting addicted because they are enjoying gambling and later on get addicted, its similar as a game addiction. What makes you enjoy gambling the most is the money involved. People loves money and winning it easily thru gambling makes them addicted to it.
