4701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What happens if someone starts another blockchain or cryptocurrency? on: March 29, 2012, 07:51:20 PM

Well there have been other cryptocurrencies started. Some have come and gone and others still exist.

Some seem to complement, or seek to serve another purpose from that of Bitcoin (e.g. namecoin),
while others seem to want to compete with it.

Is the Network Effect enough to protect Bitcoin?

Is this something to be concerned about, now or in the future?

4702  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What if someone bought up all the existing bitcoins? on: March 27, 2012, 05:25:44 PM
Hi, I am a noob to all this bitcoin stuffs. It sounds like an interesting idea but before I invest too much into it I have
some questions and concerns. Perhaps highest on my list of concerns is the possibility that someone will buy up all,
or most, of all the bitcoins that exist.

Will it be just like the existing economic system where the rich get richer on the backs of the poor?
Will that not destroy the whole bitcoin project and make whatever bitcoins I happen to get myself worthless?

I have read a few things on this kinda stuff and some of it sounds pretty scary. I don't know how much of it
is FUD or how feasible any of it is at all at all.

Please help me understand and ease my mind in regard to this issue.

Thank you
4703  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Where do I get free Bitcoins? on: March 27, 2012, 12:47:15 AM
Strike Sapphire and memorydealers added to OP.

Let me know if you prefer a different spelling or formatting of your site/business name etc.
e.g.  memorydealers or MemoryDealers or Memory Dealers or... ?

Thanks
4704  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Where do I get the free money? on: March 26, 2012, 09:36:09 PM
I am not too familiar with your site. Could you answer a few questions please?

When you say a "free tournament", what does that mean?
Does that mean there is no entry fee?
Does it require member/players to risk their own money?
Is membership at your site free?
Are bitcoins/chips given for free to allow people to play in those tournaments?
Are players allowed to withdraw all their winnings afterward with no conditions?

Thank you.

I can answer that:

"Free tournament" means it's a tournament that is free to enter.

There's no entry fee.

The players don't have to deposit any of their own money at all.

Membership is free.

The winner of the hourly freeroll gets 50 chips; each chip is 1/1000th of a bitcoin; the minimum withdrawal is 100 chips, so you have to win twice before you can withdraw (or you could deposit enough to put your balance up to 100 chips, then withdraw).

The only condition is that you can't withdraw less than 100 chips at a time.  There's no requirement to play a certain amount of "real money" games before you can withdraw.

I think this qualifies as a way of getting bitcoins for free.

Thanks, will add it to the OP.

4705  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Idea: A fund for an alternative Bitcoin development team. on: March 26, 2012, 05:26:33 PM
If I was part of an alternative development team,I can contribute design ideas and help with the layout and user interface plus make it more user friendly as well assuming I can get the job...

Why not offer your services to the existing development team? I am sure they could use people to do all kind of things.
4706  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Where do I get free Bitcoins? on: March 26, 2012, 04:47:18 PM

Thanks. Added to the OP.

Coinslot.org, limited to <50 payouts total per day of 0.001 each

marked

Coin slot is a site designed to give away Bitcoins in exchange for completing ad offers.

Paying for a service; not free.

umm Dailybitcoins and Coinads isn't free then ? as an advertiser you pay for impressions or  pay for people to visit your site to win prizes ?

It does not matter, I feel, who is giving the bitcoins away but whether the receiver is asked to actively do something to get them.
Being exposed to advertising by going to their sites I do not feel is too much to ask... others may disagree and may not feel it is worth
it.  They can choose to leave the site right away.
4708  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Where do I get free Bitcoins? on: March 26, 2012, 04:37:55 PM
I'm just pointing out that you do get free bitcoins since that was the point of this post if I'm right ?

If there are any conditions then it is not free.
If you say something like this, "Here have some bitcoins...", then those bitcoins are free,
unless you add something like, "... if you do this..." to the sentence, then those bitcoins
are not free. You are asking the other person to enter into a contract with you to provide
a service.

Myself I think that giving bitcoins away just for loading a page and then inputting your bitcoin
address is okay, like with dailybitcoins.com. Also I think that requiring one to get some kind of
membership before getting any bitcoins is okay, as with the bitcoin faucet which requires one
to have a google account, to keep people from abusing the system. As long as membership
is free and does not have a bunch of conditions attached.

Seals has a free poker tournament every hour with a .05BTC prize. There are larger free tournaments from time to time.

Also, you can read bitcoin related e-mails for free bitcoins!

http://www.bitcoinbetas.com

I wouldn't consider that free. You are paying for a service.

You are free to provide this suggestion here for everyone to consider but I don't think it is worthy for inclusion in the OP.
Others are of course free to give their opinions.

What is that you pay then ? of course its free!! as in you get paid in bitcoins for reading ??

by that logic, whenever you pay for a service, the service provider is getting FREE money!

Advertisers are paying for all the services mentioned above so by your logic it isn't free.

It probably comes down to questions such as:
Are they doing something they enjoy doing?
Are they performing a service for you or another?
Are they doing something they would do themselves if they weren't being given bitcoins?

Different people may have different opinions. Myself I don't think FeedZeBirds qualifies either since they are asking for one to perform the service
of retweeting advertising. Some may find that is so easy, and maybe even fun and/or fulfilling, that getting bitcoin for that service is as good as free,
but another may find it a waste of time and may not like sending, what they consider spam, to all their followers. They may even end up losing
some followers because of it.

Hey does anyone want to come over and help me build an addition on to my home? I will give you "free" bitcoins if you do.   Cheesy

4713  Economy / Micro Earnings / Where do I get free Bitcoin? The maintained list of verified free Bitcoin Sites. on: March 26, 2012, 02:35:21 AM
Locked: Because this list is no longer maintained and because using faucets is no longer a good or safe way to get started in Bitcoin.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are some sites where one can get free bitcoins. The catch, if you want to call it that, is
that you might be exposed to advertising. Or it might be incentive to spend more time at their site,
to gamble with or do something else there which will be to their benefit in some way. Or it might be
a way to give newbies a start with getting and using bitcoins, which, it is hoped, will benefit
Bitcoin as a whole. As long as anything like spending more time at their site, or doing something
else, is optional then I will consider the coins given out there as "free." Sites which include pop-ups,
adfly-like redirections, or similarly annoying hoops to jump through, will not be added to the list.
This list is not meant to be complete but to be a list of sites that have been checked out and proven
to be safe and reliable. If this is important to you ( as it should be in this age of scams, hacks, and
identity theft etc. ) then only use faucets that have been checked out.
Beware of sites/threads which just copy the entries from this official thread and hides the links behind url redirectors, making them
untrustworthy or a spam-filled inconvenience at best. Also beware of faucet rotator-timer things that claim to make it easy for you
to submit your address to each site at the proper times, especially ones you have to download to your own computer. It is hard to
know what is going on behind the curtain. Also even some of the sites listed here will have their own list of free Bitcoin sites but
hide them behind coinurl and/or adfly links, and other dubious and spammy things like that. For your convenience and safety it is best
to just use their faucet, and avoid the other links there, and then come back to use the verified and maintained list of links here.
Note: Many of these sites only payout once a day, or even less often, to save on transaction fees,
so don't get too worried if you don't see a payment for several hours. If after more than a week you still
don't get anything, or you have any other problems, post in this thread. Some of the operators of these
various sites follow this thread. Also note the * beside some entries. It usually means the site is
currently down or empty and if one doesn't want to waste their time they can give such sites a pass. More info is
available under the list of entries below.  Also, many sites these days will not payout until you have built up a
minimum balance, often over a number of days, so that they won't have to payout small amounts [ "dust" ]. This is
good for both them and you since "dust" transactions are problematic ( you can read more about "dust" and its problems
in other threads on this forum ). Update:  Most of these sites use a payout service, like FaucetBox for example, which
aggregates payments and pays out to ones Bitcoin address when the total balance rises above a certain minimum
value (which one can often set themselves). The colored letters after each entry below shows what service, if any,
each site uses; check the key at the bottom of the list. ( More info available under the list of sites. )
Free BTCitcoin sites
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FreeBitco.in  d
ChronoX.co.in  e
WeatherX.co.in  e
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
d  = Direct
x  = Xapo
e  = ePay
f  = Faucetbox ( closed )
m = Microwallet ( no longer paying out; all microwallet faucets removed )
p  = Paytoshi ( no reliable faucets currently available )
* = Currently empty and/or frequently empty and/or empty for long periods of time and/or takes a very long time to payout.
      ( the site being down or non-functional will here be considered the same as being empty. )
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also pay attention to the posts here. People, businesses, etc., will often give Bitcoins away as part of promotions, or games and contests,
or just because...
Please post in this thread if you know of any other free Bitcoin sites or have any other relevant information pertaining to this subject.
Do your best to point out if any conditions or restrictions of any kind exist that may cause some to think it isn't really that free...
e.g. a gambling site that gives out "free" bitcoins but doesn't allow you to withdraw them and requires that you use them to gamble
at their site... or a site that requires you to perform some task, easy or even fun as it may be, before they give you any coin.  There is
no doubt a gray area with some sites where not everyone would agree the coin is actually free. Feel free to discuss these situations below.
I will try to update this post with the sites and information that seem to be a good fit. Feel free to give your opinion and make your case
below if you do not agree with anything that I include, or exclude. You also may find some sites listed below, which while they don't exactly
qualify as giving out "free" bitcoins and don't make it into this original post, may still hold some interest for you.
Please let me know if any of these sites go away or stop giving away bitcoins and I will remove them from this list.
For example there was a site called The bitcoin flower, which would give away a free bitcoin everyday to whoever
was the first to see it in bloom when they loaded the page. It shut down late last year ( 2011 ) with a message
that it was closed for the winter. It didn't bloom again in the spring. Must not have been a perennial.
If you find this list has been helpful to you in getting your first BTC and you appreciate the time put in to verify these
sites, and to compile and maintain this list, please consider a small donation
Based on the Crunchbase profile, I'd say there is about a 98% chance he reads these forum threads.
Given that he posts here quite often I would say that is a good bet.   Wink
Actually, it was my idea...
What, was Bruce Wagner not available?    Roll Eyes
 and this is his first attempt at my request. Please see this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=69181.0
My thinking is that it would be a great way for /A/ to redeem himself since the sticky post entitled New to BitCoin? Start here!, above, was in dire need of a makeover.
I don't see it as needing a makeover but just the Thread coming placeholders filled in.  I am sure threads already exist where those topics have already been discussed.
It certainly doesn't need to be rewritten as Atlas seems to be doing. And there are other introductions that already exist that can be pointed to, like weusecoins.com.
And the donation address should be kept the same and/or put in the one for the Bitcoin Faucet. These are my views on this.
You’re new here and you have a very basic understanding of Bitcoin. No matter, I’ll tell you what you need to know.
Bitcoin is simple to use and easy to understand at its face. Bitcoin is online money that can be instantly sent to anyone in the world for little to no fees. It directly goes to the person you want it to. No middle-man. It works just like cash.
Bitcoins go into your digital account called your wallet. Your wallet can be accessed online from a website (http://blockchain.info/wallet) or a program you can install from http://bitcoin.org.
As for getting Bitcoins, you can buy them on an exchange (http://MtGox.com} or earn them by doing a job. You can then send them to friends or businesses that accept Bitcoins by sending a selected amount to their address, a Bitcoin address. It looks like this:
Beyond that, Bitcoin is a special currency because no one person or entity controls it and no more than 21 million coins can be made. It’s as good, if not better, than gold. When you have Bitcoins, they are usually only yours to hold. You can trust that they will always be in your hands.*
Like gold, people mine them. Instead of using drills and shovels, we use dedicated computing power and then sell them on various online exchanges. The great thing about the mining process is you'll have an idea of the value of your Bitcoins in the coming days: Bitcoins are mined at a predictable rate and there will never be more than 21 million of them.
To learn more about Bitcoin in detail, explore the forums and the bitcoin wiki (http://bitcoin.it).
*Make sure you use Bitcoin on a secure device and reputable software.
Nice try Atlas the innovator...  lol
well actually no; rather pathetic attempt to get some unsuspecting newbie to send you some coin.
Weren't you permabanned?
Didn't you say you were going to do something big on March 11th?
Weren't the one who promised this, that and the other thing...
and failed each time?
You mean to tell me merchants don't realize how powerless they are when it comes to control of their bank accounts or paypall accounts??! How can Bitcoin ever compete then if people don't even feel like there's room for improvement?
A lot of people just don't know there are better alternatives, familiary is comforting. For some it breeds contemp and you'll reach those, but you could miss out on a lot of others just by including hot phrases. Bitcoin can stand on it's own merits. No need to tear the banks down, they're destroying themselves.
Are those fees even competitive to paypal and credit cards??
very competitive.
https://bit-pay.com/accountingHelp.html
Have you ever tried to send PayPal to or from Mexico?  or use a credit card?  If it works, the fees are usually double the cost of a domestic US transaction.
What about Canada? I send money via paypal from Canada to the US now and then and I think it is still less expensive then this.
For my case there are no trust issues with the person I am sending to so something like chargebacks aren't a concern.
Good step in the right direction anyway.
The Paypal conversion fee from CAD to USD is at least 3% if not more then you add on their fee for the transaction and you are past the fee charged here.
Bit-pay doesn't charge a fee for conversion from CAD to USD?   Wink
This is too awesome an article not to get its own thread.
Critics of bitcoin as a currency are quick to point out that not many merchants accept it as a payment type yet. That will change. And, they also point out that the total available market is severely limited. Oh, how wrong!  Bitcoin’s first potential mega-market just so happens to be the second largest economy in the world and its sole competitor in that sphere is depreciating government paper cash.  Game on.
Take a bow Jon Matonis.
Unless you mean that sarcastically you should probably use a different picture.  Citizen Kane there is clapping for his talentless girl friend.
I hope our support for bitcoin is of a different nature.  Wink
Back to the subject, that is a good article.
