4741  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Somebody is trying to steal batch 1 Avalon shippments from DHL! on: April 02, 2013, 06:50:48 PM
People, no need to be rude. Let's just sum up the facts:

- thieves are trying to steal Avalon's from DHL, only a name + zip code is needed to change shipment address
- some say that customers are to blame for revealing too much info. Well, a lot of trusted members in this forum are known by the real names, including developers, and without a tracking number thieves could randonmly check on people to see if they have an Avalon on the way. This can become a recurrent problem because of the current value of the hardware. I'm sure everybody agrees that this is not nice and should be avoided

I will also give you another example:

CoinHoarder ordered 7 Avalons in this thread

He has done private transactions with members of this forums (me, for example), he handed over personal ID, etc. Which is pretty normal when you enter into finantial transactions with somebody.... But do you understand where I'm getting at? Dozens of users of this forums are in the same situation. Tthere is an open security breach, which can be avoided providing a tracking number at shipment or making sure that the packages are only delivered to the original address.

Other solutions may apply, let's just try to find a reasonable solution.
4742  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Avalon ASIC Batch #2 Income Sharing [cancelled and reopened] to fund #3 on: April 02, 2013, 06:37:40 PM
Hi Prof, still very complicate for me (maybe is just because english is not my native language). Simple question:

What is your ultimate goal? Maybe if you express it clearly, in two lines, we can find a mechanic that fulfills your goals and makes life easier for investors.

IMHO 1st phase is clear (you sell 70% of the shares for a fixed price per share), but I don't really get why do you use the blockchain for bids in the 2nd phase. Investors could just bid in the post (eg: 1@0.5BTC, etc.) as per all other auctions on these forums - I don't get using the blockchain unless outbidded investors are not refunded, which I think it's not the case.

Then, I would be more confident to invest if you established an "end date" for the auction. Otherwise investors cannot plan and stick to a bidding strategy.

Just my 2 satoshis...

etotheipi: could you please confirm that higuys .app is 100% safe to use?

I've been using Red Emerald's solution for a while, then I've tested higuys solution which is also working very good. Just wanted to know if you would recommend definitely switching to higuys app while we wait for an official OSX release.

Hi Rampion,

I can't confirm that.  The only way I'll confirm it is if I made it myself, but I haven't done that yet.  Luckily, I'm just about done with what I was doing, and have some time now to try the OSX building as higuys laid out for me.

Let's see how far I get...

Well, to be honest now I'm kinda worried of having used extensively higuy's solution. Not your fault of course.
4746  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC pay back on: April 02, 2013, 03:02:51 PM
The protocol tries to generate 50,400 bitcoins for every difficulty change.  For the next difficulty the network will be about 60,000 GHashes/sec.  My avalon will be about 65 Ghashes/sec.  Thus I will get 65/60,000 * 50,400 bitcoins = 54.6 bitcoins.   Thus, my spreadsheet above is wrong.  If the network grows 20% durring the next difficulty I will only get 80% * 54.6 = 44 bbitcoins.  Still alot more than I said this morning.

44 bitcoins is a lot.  But I need to make 108 to recover what I spent on the thing.

I will try to figure this out again when I get home tonight.

Sam

I can guarantee that you will get a ROI in much much less than you expect.

No need to play with spreadsheets, just use: http://www.bitcoinx.com/profit/

You will see that even with a x10 difficulty increase during the next 12 months (0.1 in the "profitability yearly decline" variable) and with less than 90% uptime (60GHs instead of 68GHs), your machine will ROI in BTC in aprox. 30 days

For batch 3 customer this looks different:

20 million starting difficulty
650 watt
cost of mining machine 8000$
0.1 profitabilty yearly decline
60ghash
66days to break even

12k first 12 month profit
if the price is stable at 100$ next 12month.

thats a massive bummer, considering that #2 customers will make a killing. if you get your batch 3 order early you might get faster break even, but not in terms of bitcoins, only in terms of money. in that case, not buying batch 3 would have been more intelligent.

I do not know what kind of amazing investments you do with your fiat, but a 66 days ROI is amazing. Even a 180 days ROI is acceptable as far as I'm concerned.

Then, I do not really care about USD profit estimations. First, because it is too much of a gamble. Secondly (and more important), because I bought a mining machine in BTC to generate BTC while supporting the network. As long as electricity gets paid, I really don't care about BTC/USD.

I will not complain if you send me an unit without PSU and FANS but with a tracking number so that i can sleep the night.
Also, since that you decided that you won't reply to my tickets anymore and so you won't change the shipping address to my billing address (my home vs my datacenter - how can i trust my datacenter to handle these "money making" devices? they were worth almost nothing when i ordered them). When i will not receive the devices, will i have to complain with you or with the datacenter? At least if you change the shipping address to my home i know that the datacenter didn't stole them. Ticket #507, please.

Dude;
I agree it would be NICE, if they could do that for you but they CANNOT.   This is the way it is and you need to deal with it.   If you do not trust your datacenter enough that you are concerned they may "steal" your money making machine, you should not have sent it to them.  Those were your actions, not Avalon's.  You need to sleep in the bed that you made.   These are not really even problems, and you should just deal with the small inconvenience and be happy that you are getting this thing when the difficulty is so low.  How much is that worth to you?

Avalon's may be stolen because DHL policy is loose and they will agree on changing delivery address just by providing a name + zip code (see OP). That info is very easily social engineered, thus this is an important security breach.

Having a tracking number to monitor the package from the very beginning will solve this problem.

We're just trying to find a solution in here, no need to flame in either way.

Care to help the other folks get it?

I'd rather shot myself in the leg!

Joking, here it is:

1. There are 100 shares on sale.
2. Each share represents 1/100 of hashing power provided by Avalon batch 2 machine.
3. Each share guarantees 1/100 of mining profits generated by mentioned machine.
4. Owner of the share gets back at least the amount of bitcoins he invested in share.
5. Unless someone outbids owner of the share, he or she will be getting 1/100 of the mining profits for the lifetime of mentioned machine.

About multiple addresses - don't worry, I'm the owner of all those addresses. Paperwallets made for each of them, backup on 3 USB sticks and DVD-RW, etc.

So: only the 100 highest bidders get dividends - correct?

Where do we see the current higher and lower bid? It would be cool to know that if you bid less than X you won't be able to get in.

These services have their place. Instawallet is a brilliant service for introducing newbies to bitcoin. A newbie can have a bitcoin address up and running and making payments, literally within seconds. In this era of short attention spans, the Instawallet service is invaluable for spreading bitcoin adoption.

I frequently tell friends to visit Instawallet.org and quote me the address they see. Then I send some small change to that address. They immediately "get" bitcoin.

Yeah, in this era of short attention spans Instawallet is perfect to have newbie's coins stolen.

Tell your friends to use blockchain.info's My Wallet for their first pennies, is quite as immediate as Instawallet and much more secure.

Hey Zhang, thank you for taking the time to explain the situation - it's appreciated.

Maybe you can tell to your agent that this is important hardware, and that it is crucial to have tracking numbers the same day the packages are handled to DHL? They should be able to do that, even if it is likely to be an additional cost as it requires some manual work. But the cost of potential stolen packages because of thieves exploiting this vulnerability it's likely to be much higher, please consider that.

Just an idea to try to make everybody safer.

Please reread what zhang wrote and read between the lines this time. The Chinese mafia doesn't care if you get your money-printing machine now or never, the Chinese mafia is also not interested in customer service ratings, the Chinese mafia just provides a convenient relayment service between Bitsyncom and DHL. Bitsyncom can take it or leave it. Trying to tell the Chinese mafia how to do their job usually ends badly.

Don't know if that kind of attitude will help to solve a problem we are having, both Avalon and its customers.

But anyhow its possible that Avalon's agent (name it as you wish) could provide that service for an incremental cost.
4755  Economy / Auctions / Re: Shares in a BFL Single on: April 02, 2013, 02:03:09 PM
If you are able to sell 40% of a Single you don't even own yet for $6.300 (7.5BTC*8*$105) I would be amazed. That would be aprox. x12 of your purchase price ($1,299*40%=$519,6).

Anyhow the auction will be interesting, let's see if the community thinks that this units will be shipped anytime soon (but I recommend you upgrading your order immediately and prove it)
4756  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Somebody is trying to steal batch 1 Avalon shippments from DHL! on: April 02, 2013, 01:50:52 PM
could any one tell me, how to give a non-exist tracking number to our customers?

first, we send the packages to HK-DHL agent.

agent transport them to HK, a few days time.

packages picked up at HK.

after about 1 week, they will give us the tracking number if we ask for.

to most country, 1 week time is enough for a delivery.

if anything goes wrong, like custom issues happened or wrong tel number or something , our agent will call us, give us the tracking number, let us contect with our customer. i think multiple people get my email when they having custom issues or DHL can not find you.

why we use such a screwed work flow?

1, save shipment cost.
2, if we go to DHL directly, they didn't accept this device, there is PSU and FANs in it, which is contraband. only these agent can send them out by doing some bribery work. if we tell them we are not satisfied, they simply ask us to deal with DHL ourself instead.

fuck

OP has just created a new profile which is now trying to escape newbie's prison.

Every new account is a tiny improvement in his scammer skills.

Beware: 12 months and 100 accounts later he might actually be able to scam somebody.
