4841  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Securing Seed Phrase Using Magic Mug Under $15 on: June 10, 2022, 10:19:46 AM
Why would anyone want to use this insecure means of storing their seedphrase, when they can get a hardware wallet for a slightly higher amount (if you're considering you would need to get two)?

Hardware wallet only generates seed in a secure environment and gives us better control over transactions, but backup is something else entirely and is a key part of securing our digital assets. Any innovative way to make backups is always welcome, although we can always talk about how reliable and safe it is in some way.

I personally would not use mugs for my seed for the reasons already mentioned, but I believe that some information can be obscured by using invisible ink which is then only visible if UV light is used, or depending on the ink if a heat source is used or certain chemical.

I mean let's be serious: a card that allows you to spend hundreds of dollars each month without any kind of identity/background check? And to be used only in the United States? Worst country ever to do something like that.

It is not a matter of a few hundred dollars, but the maximum allowed amount was set at as much as $30k per month, which is a significant amount even if it is an annual limit. It is not at all clear to me how one supposedly serious company came up with such a frivolous idea...
4843  Economy / Economics / Re: Italy Is Held Back by 2.6 Million People Who Have Given Up on Work on: June 09, 2022, 02:06:44 PM
It's not just Italy. All southern European countries have big numbers of unemployed people, who aren't actively seeking a job. Spain and Greece also have this problem. I'm not sure about Portugal or the Balkan countries, though.

It all depends on how strong the gray economy is and how much are the social benefits and various benefits for those who are unemployed. Many formally unemployed people work without being registered because they earn more, and some are stimulated not to work with quite generous benefits, which can amount to 70-80% of the average salary. Now imagine someone working without being in the system and at the same time receiving unemployment benefits - taxes and pensions are not something these people care about.

As for the Balkans, countries like Croatia face a large labor shortage in general, especially during the tourist season as more than 300 000 people emigrate to the west EU in the last 10 years - while this gap is being filled by people from BiH and Serbia who come mainly as workers in construction and tourism.

From one example cited in the article, it can be said that people lost their jobs during a pandemic at the age of 50 have the biggest problems mostly because they can't find a similar job they did before, and the idea of retraining is not something they gladly accept.

Quote
Adapting to the shifting labor market is a challenge for Beatrice Tarantino. She has struggled to find a job since losing hers at an insurance company in Rome during redundancies in 2018. Currently helping a friend with childcare, she plans to return to the fray of seeking work later this year.

“After the pandemic struck, it got harder to look for a job,” the 49-year-old said. “Now I’m starting to feel too old to find one.”
4844  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the future of bitcoin? Commodity, currency or smth else? on: June 09, 2022, 01:34:09 PM
It seems that you have to learn a lot, otherwise you will live in various delusions for a long time. One of these misconceptions is that many like you think that 21 million BTC (max supply) is something that will make it impossible for anyone who wants to use Bitcoin as a currency - and yet the truth is completely different. 1 BTC consists of 100 million satoshi = 0.00000001 which is quite enough for everyone who will ever want to use it.

Stop being carried away by some ideas that some other cryptocurrency will take over and that people will start using it en masse - there is a fiat for that, and unfortunately for you and all the rest of us it is in virtually unlimited quantities, so we will now suffer from inflation and recession precisely because of what you consider an advantage.
4845  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [READ]: CCleaner search results spread crypto stealing malware on: June 09, 2022, 01:19:40 PM
The basic app is free and I use it every day to clean up all the garbage that accumulates after surfing, and the pro version doesn't seem to offer anything extra worth paying for - so it's weird that people are looking for pirated versions of something that does its job as a free version.

Avast estimates a counter value of at least 50K $ already stolen through the walled address swaps.

It's a bit ironic that the warning comes from a company that is caught selling its users' data - if you ask me, this is just an attempt at very bad PR for a company whose reputation was significantly damaged two years ago. It is this data that can be used for the purposes of potential malicious attacks and the creation of various scam campaigns.

Avast, which makes free antivirus software that's used by millions of people around the world, is reportedly selling "highly sensitive" web browsing data via a subsidiary company called Jumpshot. The software appears to track users clicks and movements across the web, and collects data on things like searches on Google and Google Maps, as well as visits to specific LinkedIn pages, YouTube vids and porn websites, according to an investigation published Monday by Motherboard and PCMag.
4846  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Edge issues Mastercard without KYC on: June 09, 2022, 10:47:55 AM
Here's some information about Patriot's debit cards:

Monitored by Enfact
In order to verify customer transactions, Enfact may contact you by phone using an automated recording service.  The automated call service will let you know that the call is on behalf of Patriot Bank and include your particular name.  You will then be asked to verify the Zip Code for your account. No other account questions will be asked.  If you receive a call requesting information other than your Zip Code, please DO NOT COMPLY and contact your financial institution immediately.

Well, it's not that we can say that everything is completely anonymous because the bank (or Enfact) that monitors transactions knows your phone number and name (probably last name) and verifies the authenticity of transactions by calling your number. I’m not saying that someone can’t give false information when it comes to name and ZIP code, but I guess that’s punishable under U.S. law.

Allowing someone to spend as much as $30k a month without the authorities having no insight into exactly who it is is a little too naive to believe.

Did Cyberczar ever wrote his telegram ID is  @Cyberczar ? Because if anyone makes the same telegram ID as of bitcoin talk, he/she will not be considered as an altcoin.

You got an answer that undoubtedly shows that it is the same person, and the reason why he uses an alt account is more than obvious. I hope you know the difference between altcoins and alt accounts Wink
4848  Other / Meta / Re: Why do these accounts have the right to wear a clickable signature on the forum? on: June 09, 2022, 10:02:47 AM
Of course, there are always solutions, but the question is whether the administration of the forum considers it a problem, and consequently does it have the slightest intention to do something about it? I have only listed two possible solutions that would automatically disable such members from having signatures no matter how much I find it impossible for that to happen.

I have been on the forum since 2015 and believe me I have witnessed a dozen similar threads discussing how to prevent bad people from doing bad things on the forum - the only thing that has happened in 7 years is the merit system which has in some ways made it difficult for future spammers to thrive, but it did not solve the problem of old spammers who retained the benefits of the pre-merit system.

It is not technically difficult to remove signatures from individual profiles because even global mods can do this, which we have seen in the case of plagiarism penalties. The question is who and on the basis of which criteria will make an assessment that someone will be punished in this way, will the removal of the signature be permanent or temporary...?
4849  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: June 08, 2022, 03:04:24 PM

Politicians really have basic problems in understanding Bitcoin - because who cares what they think - Satoshi didn't ask permission from anyone when he invented Bitcoin...
4850  Other / Meta / Re: Why do these accounts have the right to wear a clickable signature on the forum? on: June 08, 2022, 02:21:23 PM
I am against this proposal of removing airdropped merits. It doesn't affect me personally, just as it doesn't affect you, but that's not the point. If a decision was made to introduce this system, which also entails airdropped merits, it seems a bit unserious to make changes to it now. The system works, it is not perfect because perfect doesn't exist.

I doubt that there would be at least 1% of active members who would support such a move even if such a proposal were put to the vote. People are basically very reluctant to be deprived of something they got and I have no doubt that a real rebellion would break out if something like that happened. In addition, if things get out of hand - an option that is already on the table is a complete ban on signature campaigns.

We clearly see that the vast majority of them would not have been able to reach full member if the same rules had been applied to them since the merit system came into force.

There is no doubt that these are members who are completely worthless to the forum in every sense, and they should be prevented from having signatures. The question is how to do it if removing airdropped merits is not a realistic option and the scam is not moderated by the forum?
4851  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will countries ban Bitcoin mining due to environmental concerns? on: June 08, 2022, 01:49:27 PM
Do you think countries worldwide will ban Bitcoin mining due to environmental concerns? If not, why? If mining is banned, do you think Bitcoin will switch to PoS? Will it still survive being a PoW cryptocurrency? Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Smiley

In a world completely dependent on fossil fuels it looks really idiotic when someone deals with something they can't control in this way. Bitcoin mining is at the very bottom of the problem when it comes to the environment and this cannot be a compelling argument when it comes to any ban. Of course, that won’t stop some countries from continuing to push that pointless agenda, or that geniuses like Mr. Mars from time to time say Bitcoin isn’t green enough to use it for transactions.

POS will never happen, no matter what blackmail they come up with - and in about 10 years, will this debate make any sense at all if we know that 99% of BTC will be mined, which means that the 1% (210 000) what remains will not certainly increase the number of miners, but will drastically reduce it.
4852  Economy / Services / Re: I'll Pay $10 For Scam Exchanges on: June 08, 2022, 01:27:44 PM
Did anyone really got paid after reporting to this user via telegram?

If someone wants to find 20 scam crypto exchanges then they will have to spend a little more time, since the OP only asks for new exchanges - and I think it's worth a lot more than the $10 it offers. Judging by the name he uses on Telegram, OP is the alt account of Cyberczar, who has been accused of some shady things in the past.
4853  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scam from Google Form, Crypto Donate. on: June 08, 2022, 10:51:47 AM
I received an email from Google Form that directed me to a site Crypto Donate, I screenshot part of the email below, I did not do anything or fill out anything, but this is just the email.

Only 0.45 BTC? So who will be fooled into becoming greedy and believing that such things happen in real life? Some of us got as many as 20 BTC some time ago, we just had to believe that Santa Claus was a little late this year due to the pandemic Wink

This is just a scam site, donate and be scammed because of greediness. I know I am not only the one that has been sent this scam email, please, tell all your family and friends and let this go beyond Bitcointalk.

I would not pay too much attention to emails like this which are quite common given the millions of email addresses that have leaked in various hacks over the years. In my case, 99% of such messages end up in the spam folder anyway, and if one does appear in the inbox, the best we can do is mark it as spam and prevent others from seeing it at all.
4854  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PayPal allows users to withdraw Bitcoin to external wallets on: June 08, 2022, 10:22:06 AM
As the title says, PayPal is finally allowing their users to move their Bitcoin to their own wallets. PayPal went a long way, from getting people banned for buying Bitcoin using PayPal ( I know few people that lost their PayPal accounts due that) to now this.

I don't believe that PP officials have a different view of Bitcoin than they did when they banned people for crypto/PP transactions, but that it's just a matter of profit and they will take the opportunity. I would also not be surprised if in the future they change their minds again and thus close the circle.

I am just curious how many PayPal users will actually go for that option and start taking responsibility for their own money. Somehow I doubt that number will be huge, bits its a good thing to have that option and is a step in the right direction.

I think most will continue to keep their BTC the way they have done so far, because if PP was their crypto bank, they will not see this option as an advantage. Still, maybe this opportunity will attract some new customers who know the benefits of controlling their private keys. If they were to pull off a smart business move, then they should lower the service fee so that they are competitive with those who still charge dearly for it.
4855  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MS Word vulnerability could lead to stealing your bitcoins on: June 07, 2022, 02:35:48 PM
On the other hand, there don’t seem to be any reports of this exploit been used by hackers to date, either because the case is too fresh, or not that easy to become acquainted with and exploit.

It seems that attacks related to this vulnerability were noticed a month ago, and according to the information gathered, it seems that the vulnerability was first used by Chinese hackers. In addition to the method you mentioned in the OP, the article says that there is an unofficial patch, although this is not something I would personally apply.

As with any new zero-day, Follina is already being exploited in the wild and security researchers from Proofpoint have discovered that the Chinese state-sponsored threat actor TA413 has been using the vulnerability to target the international Tibetan community.

In a tweet (opens in new tab), the company’s researchers explained that TA413 is using malicious URLs to deliver ZIP files that contain weaponized Word documents that exploit Follina. At the same time, MalwareHunterTeam (opens in new tab) also found Word files with Chinese filenames that are currently being used to install infostealers.

It’s worth noting that attacks exploiting Follina were spotted over a month ago when sextortion threats and invitations to do an interview with Sputnik radio were both used as lures according to BleepingComputer.
4856  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The Reasons I Trust Binance for my Crypto Storage on: June 07, 2022, 02:20:27 PM
No large exchange will ever be able to pay back a total hack, and it makes no sense, they would rather go bankrupt and start again under a different name.

Even if in some imaginary situation it would be possible to pay the total damage, I wonder how someone would feel waiting 5 or 10 years for it? It has always been fascinating to me that in a country like Japan, such a case has not yet been resolved after 8 years, and in the event that someone hacks specified Chinese wandering crypto exchange, maybe the whole thing would be solved by the Chinese Communist Party Roll Eyes

I can understand that due to the need to trade it is necessary to have a part of BTC on crypto exchange, but I would never use such platforms as a way for long-term storage no matter how secure someone considered them. I know that it is a great challenge for many to be their own bank, but that is one of the key things when it comes to financial sovereignty.
4857  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain Association - Thoughts over NY's mining ban on: June 07, 2022, 01:30:22 PM
I don't think this is just a matter of reallocating your mining company and setting up shop in a different state. If it comes to the point where the state of New York bans the mining of Bitcoin, I am afraid it will create a chain reaction where other states will follow. I don't even want to think about the consequences and what could happen if the majority of US states ban Bitcoin mining in a few years from now.

I think that NY is in some ways a specific part of the US when it comes to Bitcoin, so it is possible that we should not be afraid that other states will follow their example. If Texas benefits from crypto mining, it certainly won't give up because some NY bureaucrats don't have a smarter job than making up laws that don't make much sense.

I would answer this second question with a counter-question - is it better for the US to become dominant in Bitcoin mining or for some (or most) federal states to ban it?

It's sad that the focus is always on outright bans. Why not incentivize the mining industry to use affordable and clean energy instead? It's a rhetorical question because the problem is not in Bitcoin miners using fossil fuels, the problem is Bitcoin.

That's right, even if Bitcoin would use 100% clean energy, opponents would find a new excuse to try to undermine it. We can already choose between agendas about Bitcoin as a way to launder money, crime of all kinds, creating waste in the form of electronic equipment, generating online scams ...
4858  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin price and actions to raise it on: June 07, 2022, 01:07:59 PM
Today, not only bitcoin, but also other cryptocurrencies are developing well. In the future, we will come to multicurrency in cryptocurrencies. It's time to prepare platforms for working with cryptocurrency.

Are other cryptocurrencies developing well? I would not say that this is any meaningful development in the sense of bringing some benefit to the world, but that individuals get rich on false promises that they have created something better than Bitcoin. You have about 20 000 cryptocurrencies/tokens today, and 99% are completely useless and will not exist in the future - what kind of world are you talking about then and what kind of preparations?

Honestly, your ideas don't make sense to me personally, and I can't say whether it's because of your language barrier or you're a complete beginner living in some kind of illusion?
4859  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: show fees paid for past transactions on: June 07, 2022, 11:03:33 AM
In the Android version, there is fee information next to each outgoing transaction in sats, but if the $ view is selected, there is no value display. Would creating a watch-only wallet on Android would make that info displayed?
