In the meantime, it'd be nice to know what moderators and developers think at this point - is this technically feasible?

It's a good idea and I'd love to have it (with some additional features), but I don't think it can be done well with SMF.

Thoughts on how best to do it:

Some tags (the current boards) would be listed as they are now on the front page. Additional less-popular tags would be shown in a categorized list elsewhere. A tag cloud could also be made available.

An "ignore topic" feature would be a good complement so you don't keep seeing the same topic you don't care about on multiple pages.

It'd be cool if users could define a number of "tag mashup" pages. Each page would list topics with any of several tags, and topics with certain tags could also be excluded from the page. Like a page containing topics with the tag "development" and "mining", but not "alternative clients" or "alternative currencies". If a topic matches multiple tags, it would only appear once on the page.

A separate report feature for incorrect tags would be nice. The reporter could add or remove tags from the current set for a topic, and moderators would see an easy summary like "+development, +mining, -discussion".

Clearly you don't want to be shown new replies to your posts. You should use the watchlist feature instead.
4923  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: August 01, 2012, 05:18:58 AM
it stopped counting again, so what is the point of "total time logged in" if it is completely innacurate?

The counter only updates occasionally. It's still being tracked continuously.
4924  Other / Meta / Re: labels/tags instead of subfora? on: July 31, 2012, 10:10:54 PM
That would be good. The tags would need to be admin-defined, though. Tag systems where posters can come up with arbitrary tag names make it hard for readers to find stuff, since posters often choose strange and incorrect tags.

This'd be pretty hard to add to SMF (and probably most forum software), though.

Admin----> Current Theme-----> Member Options

Click "Change current options for all members using this theme"

Set the pulldown next to "Save a copy of each personal message in my outbox by default" to CHANGE.  Check the box, also.  Scroll down and save your changes.

I don't see this. Are you sure it's in SMF 1.1.x?
4926  Other / Off-topic / Re: Tomorrow at around 9:40PM KST my death will air on MBC in Korea on: July 31, 2012, 05:45:50 AM
We were French priests trying to spread the gospel to Korea and the Korean king thought that it undermined his authority so he started war with the French. Killing me was just a "Fuck you" on the way out.

Is the audience meant to be sympathetic toward the Koreans or the French?
4927  Other / Meta / Re: Automatically save outgoing PM's in outbox on: July 31, 2012, 02:12:01 AM
I've looked into setting that option by default, but it wasn't obvious to me how to do it. It looks like it might be difficult.

There is no PM limit.

New VIP donator: BCB. Thanks!
4929  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC block timestamp limited to year 2106, will bitcoin work after that ? on: July 30, 2012, 04:15:20 PM
unsigned int is good until 2106.  Surely the network will have to be totally revamped at least once by then.

There should not be any signed int.  If you've found a signed int somewhere, please tell me (within the next 25 years please) and I'll change it to unsigned int.
4930  Other / Meta / Re: Regular users should not be able to lock their own threads on: July 30, 2012, 03:25:35 AM
I'd prefer that they weren't able to delete them though.

They aren't.

is this auction still going? if so ...

No.
4932  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos on the ball today. on: July 29, 2012, 08:21:15 PM
Thanks. I wanted to create a wall of "moved" announcements so people see that I created some new sections:
- Meetups
- Important Announcements
- Service Announcements
- Service Discussion
- Scam Accusations
4933  Bitcoin / Important Announcements / Guidelines on: July 29, 2012, 08:17:47 PM
Except for emergency security-related announcements, each person and organization may post a topic here at most once per week. This section is for only the most significant announcements.

Cross-posts are OK here.

Moderators should quote (not move) important announcements here when necessary.

In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:

Efficacy stats:

Info about the current ad slots:

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 00:00:00 on August 5, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.
4935  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 43 on: July 29, 2012, 06:41:01 AM
Zhou Tong won all of the slots in the auction. I don't think that the forum is responsible for determining whether people are guilty in complicated situations like this. If it turns out that zhoutong is guilty and owes Bitcoinica users lots of BTC, he's not going to be exactly 80 BTC short of repaying everyone due to this ad purchase. He's either going to have the money, or a lot of it will be missing. There's no reason for the forum not to accept this BTC -- it doesn't hurt anyone.
4936  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 43 on: July 27, 2012, 10:20:40 PM
8 @ 10

In case your ads will be time-sensitive: Be aware that these ads will not go up until about 3 days from now.
4937  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 43 on: July 27, 2012, 10:10:57 PM
8 @ 10

Wow. This is by far the highest-ever per-slot price, and this auction will have record income. I kind of expected you to cancel your bid, too.
4938  Economy / Lending / Re: Bitcoin Savings and Trust is probably a Ponzi Scheme: A Petition on: July 27, 2012, 10:09:46 AM
How does this bet work if pirate defaults before the bet deadline?  What prevents everyone from piling on bets on the winning side until the the deadline date?  Does betsofbitco.in have a system in place to invalidate all bets after an arbitrary date?

Bets of Bitcoin ends bets once they are determined.
4939  Other / Meta / Re: A mod here believes I should be scammer tagged and keeps stalking/harassing me on: July 26, 2012, 09:10:08 PM
It turned out that TizzyTazzy == Icy-, DupingBitCoins, and Leon. I'll post his IPs unless he repays his victims soon.
4940  Other / Meta / Re: A sense of DECENCY and why the mods need to take an interest now. P on: July 26, 2012, 07:35:28 AM
It must not be as bad as you say, since you haven't reported any posts in at least the last 30 days...
