5001  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: INVEST BITCOIN!!! on: March 11, 2015, 10:00:57 PM

BTC gains value by usage, it is not an asset at all, it is a way of trading value securely without centralised banks

Where it looks like an asset is, in the early years of the transition from fiat to BTC, going to show up the ones who sat on their coins and sold them for fiat

But if the whole world accepted BTC what are you going to sell it for?

As it becomes accepted down supply roots i.e. ; coffee shop owner sells you cups of coffee for BTC because they can buy beans for BTC because the bean farmers can buy fertiliser and tools and pay workers in BTC and the workers can buy food and pay rent with BTC. I'm missing out a few steps but you get the idea.

With any luck in some years we may be able to leave this fiat shite way behind us...

A lot of debate exists about this. There's no value to be gained if BTC is primarily a currency, much like investing in currencies isn't a thing people do. People speculate on currencies to take advantage of short term differences in value between two currencies but if you hold Euros, you're not earning a return. BTC could very well be an asset class if it remains an "alternative currency" to fiat options. If it replaces fiat options we'll see the currency reality you're predicting.

Even as a currency, it could go up in value. Just like we hold cash now, people would hold bitcoins. And the more people there are holding them, the more their value goes up.

It's an interesting experiment, to be sure. But keep in mind that the reason the dollar is inflating is because people are holding and the government keeps printing more to cover debts (or something along those lines. If everyone spent all their money, the debt, I believe, would be nonexistent due to significant taxes, which would be funneled back into the economy).
5002  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: In 2015, faucets are bad for bitcoin on: March 11, 2015, 06:32:15 AM
Yeah, you could make quite a bit if you're super super lucky  Cheesy

Plus some faucets like mybitmine are becoming more like games rather than just pure faucets, so some of these are becoming more fun to mess around with. Why not entice new users with them

I think the movement towards more game-based faucets is going to become the norm. They are more than just entering captchas, can allow players to gamble (or play for a chance to win more), and just break away from the normalcy we deal with now. And that's a great thing. I do think we have a lot of ways to go in terms of revolutionizing the faucets, though, for user retention and enjoyment.

No matter what you do the house edge will be the same. No way to change it

Or any gambling game with a house edge, for that matter.

You can change the edge on some games. You can play blackjack really badly, hitting until you bust every chance you get. The house edge for such a player is massive. You can play blackjack really well, taking advantage of your knowledge of the composition of what is left in the shoe to adjust your bet size according to your chance of winning the next hand, and to adjust your playing decisions within a hand. If you know the remaining cards are rich in low cards and low in 10's, you'll want to hit your 16 against a dealer 10. For example.

Even just by refusing insurance every time you're getting a lower edge than the guy next to you who takes it.

Edge on some games is a tricky thing as well... a new one I like (High Card Flush) has an "average" house edge, and then separate ones from there based on whether you're a good or a bad player (like your BJ scenario). I think what people don't realize, though, is that at the end of the day, the house is always still going to be positive. It can be diminished somewhat with some games, but you won't negate it completely.

Seeing all the replies I think I should start with trading avoiding all gambling, mining etc.
That will be great to start with Smiley

Indeed. Trading is safer. Anyone can recommend some decent trading platform?

Thanks.

I'll vote for Bitfinex. It's got a huge trading volume and allows things like margin trading. If you're good at what you do, it's a solid platform.

There are also some platforms for futures trading, but I'm not well-versed enough in that to give recommendations.
5005  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best USB drive to store your Bitcoins on: March 11, 2015, 06:26:28 AM
I second all those who recommended sandisk drives. Never once had a problem with mine.

Can't rely 100% on technology, that's why I got the paper wallets..

But I also second this. Don't just rely on one usb. Back them up on 2 usbs and maybe other ways. On some wallets you can recover your coins from a seed so write that down as well.

Eh, I like brand loyalty as much as the next guy, but hardware is hardware. You might not have issues with Sandisk, but I have numerous times. Just like I have with most other companies. As such, when it comes to something like this, just being careful is the best step, rather than relying on the hardware to serve its purpose for a lifetime.

go to your profile and then go to "Notifications and Email" section. uncheck the options that you don't want.
i have only checked the "forum announcement" thing.
i think that will solve your problem

I think their goal was to unfollow specific threads, to clean up the list of new replies. I'd actually like to know how to do this as well, since as far as I can tell it's not possible.

Yup. So some threads I posted in are has so much replies that it fills up all my new replies tab. I tried to go to watchlist and untick those unwanted threads but afterwards they just kept informing me for new replies.

Using pooya's method I can only untick the email notification box. The problem in my case is about the forum notifications but not the email notifications for PMs.

Yeah, this has been an ongoing problem for me as well, and I spent a long time in the past trying to figure out how to get around it. I'm thinking it may be a... "feature" of SMF, such that we don't have control over it. Sucks because it's pretty annoying.

May I ask what SMF means? Lol it might be a stupid question.

It appears that I have already unwatched a topic, because the option on the bottom right side only has "watch" but not "unwatch". So it is a bug that needs fixing right?

SMF = Simple Machine Forums. It's the software these forums use (and is also seen in the footer of every page, :p).

Watch vs. unwatch only deals with the watchlist. Not the "show replies" function.

5008  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best USB drive to store your Bitcoins on: March 10, 2015, 07:48:22 AM
For me I am just going to buy a cheap brand name usb and use that.

If it's just for the wallet file (and it's a BACKUP, not your only copy), that should be fine. Most drives go through issues after repetitive reads/writes or due to being filled up past their "true capacity" (some drives are altered to make them think they have more room than they do). If it's just for a wallet file, a cheap USB drive should handle the job of allowing access without causing too many issues. Just keep in mind that it can wipe at any point.
5009  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Does martingale really works? on: March 10, 2015, 07:46:35 AM
i think martingaling leads to bust eventually. the house edge will eventually kick in

This is true. I've also attempted to "exploit" the system by using rounding errors for a bigger edge. Out of many trials, it still fails (what I mean by rounding errors is, for example, finding a sweet number spot where you will actually get slightly more from a win than you should because, for example, you get 1.5 coins instead of 1, which rounds up to a win of 2). Even so, the house always picks up eventually and dominates it.
I think the house edge doesn't even matter with martingale.
Even without a house edge, you do not have an unlimited bankroll and you will eventually bust  Grin

Theoretically. The house edge will always make a difference, though, as it means out of 100 rolls, you should only get, say 48 wins, rather than 50. This means you will bust much faster than without one. The theory remains the same, yes, but the house edge decreases the chances of hitting your goal significantly.

Thanks guys. I read somewhere that these wallets are good: https://mycelium.com/ and https://electrum.org/

What are your thoughts?

Online wallets?  Too many horror stories.

I'm going to second this. Online wallets are far too risky. Even with a legitimate site, it can be hacked, an employee can go rogue, etc. You're basically opening yourself up to a lot more risks than you would be otherwise. Unlike cash, which is FEDERALLY insured when in a bank, your BTC, if stolen/hacked/etc. is gone forever. Always keep it in your own possession at all times.
5012  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: solo mining with multibit on: March 10, 2015, 07:40:01 AM
I don't mean to sound offensive or anything but don't mine with a cpu nor gpu, you will never get a block mining solo and you will never break even at all with a pool miner.

This. Instead, look towards altcoins and pick something you like the premise of. Mine that, and then if you want bitcoins, simply trade them on an exchange. This will result in much more earnings than attempting to mine BTC itself.
5013  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best USB drive to store your Bitcoins on: March 10, 2015, 07:37:49 AM
I'll go ahead and post this in the Beginners section as it fits the most in my opinion.

Which USB drive would be your best choice for storing sensitive data like bitcoin keys and wallets and why?

Please provide a link to your preferred USB stick.

I have ordered a Sandisk Cruzer Force 8gb for 4$ from ebay just because I had some change in my paypal account, yeah it might be fake, and i'm not sure if i'm going to use it for that kind of storage. (If it's fake i'm going to charge back this crap).
I've seen it's rating on Amazon store and it looks like a decent USB.

So, what would be your pick ? (links please(amazon/newegg/ebay).

With ANY USB stick, be sure you have backups. Always. USB sticks (thumb drives) run on flash memory, and it's not known for its reliability (I can't count the number of times a drive has been wiped/lost files randomly). Absolutely do NOT use it as your only source of backup.
5014  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best operative system? on: March 10, 2015, 07:35:24 AM
The start button in Windows 8.1 isn't really a proper start button since it simply brings you back to the start screen with all the tiles.

Thanks for the heads-up! I wasn't aware of this. I was under the impression it basically worked like Windows 7.

I still don't get why Microsoft wouldn't offer a dual-mode OS. Let the users pick how they want to use it. Or even go a step further and just set it up with Metro if you're using a touch screen monitor/device, and normal if you're not. Problem solved.

5016  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: In 2015, faucets are bad for bitcoin on: March 10, 2015, 07:30:36 AM
I would have to agree with them being bad for bitcoin and for the persons mental health lol It is a waste of time for anyone who is not a newbie just getting started in bitcoin and learning which it does a good job at in my opinion so they will not go anywhere soon

Bad for mental health? Really? The worst part about comments like this is that back when faucets gave .1 BTC and up *per claim* (as in 2.4+ BTC a day was possible per faucet) people claimed the same thing because they were valueless.

I have the feeling in the next 5 years people are going to cry about how they didn't do faucets back in the day (now). If you had started a few years ago, you could have been earning hundreds of BTC a week off less than an hour of work. Not so worthless now, is it?
The value of what is received from faucets today may possibly be wroth more in the future, however you should not rely on the value of the bitcoin received from faucets increasing in the future when determining if it is a good idea to use a faucet, the reason for this being that you could invest your time in other ways to earn income and then use that income to purchase bitcoin on an exchange

While I agree with this, we could also stretch it out to say that using coupons is a waste of time, that waiting for freebies is a waste, doing mail in rebates is a waste, etc. In all of these cases, you could be spending your time on something more valuable. The whole point is to have a relaxed method of earning (or saving), rather than doing "normal" work.

its not about avoiding gambling. just you have to keep in mind that gambling is not an investment.
this is a wrong thought that is becoming common between users that gambling is an investment and you are supposed to profit from it. NO it is for fun and spending money.

I don't know why anyone would think gambling is an investment. The whole premise behind it is that the house has an edge, and they always win over time. You really shouldn't do it as an investment, but more of a "let's see if I'm more lucky than most people... when I have no control over what happens."

5019  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: INVEST BITCOIN!!! on: March 09, 2015, 06:11:52 AM
As expected, the AUD is devaluating very hard. This is the only reason that such high interest rates are possible.

http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=AUDUSD%3DX+Interactive#{%22range%22%3A%225y%22%2C%22scale%22%3A%22linear%22}

That chart shows deflation, rather than inflation (devaluation). It says it's AUS->USD, and that it went from 1.1 to 0.7. This means whereas it used to cost $1.1 AUS = $1 USD, now it only takes about half that. This means it would have deflated by 50% (meaning $AUS is actually worth twice as much as it was before, relative to USD).

i.e., in 2012, if I had $1000, I could buy $1100 in stuff in Australia. Now, with $1000, I can only buy $700 in stuff there with the same USD. So the value of $AUS has gone up, the value of USD has gone down.

For your statement to ring true, it would have to go in the opposite direction (in that it would take MORE $AUS to equal the same USD).
No lol audusd going down is not deflationary.. Infact aus central bank has been complaining deflation was an issue as aud rose above parity.. And that they would sell if market doesnt correct.. And now its falling on its own.. Usd is deflationary right now.
In 2012 with $1000 u can buy $900 aud worth of stuff.. And now $1200 aud worth at 0.8

If $1 USD is only worth $0.77 AUS, and last year $1 USD was worth $1.1 AUS, how is USD going up in value? That makes absolutely no sense.
5020  Economy / Gambling / Re: Nitrogensports Poker - Not fair ? on: March 09, 2015, 04:26:05 AM
i dont think theyre cheating you in these examples. it would make them far more money to operate the site honestly. they dont care who wins its max rake that makes them money. as you play more and more hands you will see just about everything that can happen happen.

they go cheating players then they will lose business and make 0 rake is what im saying

After looking at these hands, nothing seems out of the ordinary to me. Looks just like what would happen in a casino or a fun game with friends. Remember that statistics are just that. A hand that has a 0.01% chance of winning is going to, over time, win 10-20-30x IN A ROW. The thought that it popping up just once is a sign of cheating is asinine.
