5081  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor mailing list breached on: April 09, 2022, 07:47:21 PM
It is not a question of if your personal information will be leaked by any company you deal with, it is a question of when.
This is probably true and there is no real protection against that, except by using alternative and fake personal information, temporary emails and secondary phone numbers.
I remember one day I received multiple phone calls on my alt phone number, calls came in exact same time with small time difference, they came from different countries around the world.
Later I tried to call one of those numbers (with my hidden ID) and I received voice info that number is not in function and it can't receive any calls.
Something like this can make a person little paranoid, but it's better to be slightly paranoid than to get scammed or blackmailed.

Trezor says that all customer data is purged after 90 days, but you received the phishing email 2 years after your purchase. That means that MailChimp keeps user data for much longer to be able to send new versions of the newsletters (which is logical).
I never used my normal email for any Trezor purchase, but I received one phishing email on my dedicated Trezor temp-email I used only for purpose of reading their newsletter.
One thing I am sure is that I used that email for trezor newsletter more than 90 days, so it seems that deleting function is not working for malichimp or they are lying Wink
5082  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Discussion] Taro: A new protocol for multi-asset Bitcoin and Lightning on: April 09, 2022, 07:28:49 PM
However, I think both RGB and Taro seem to be more expressive than OmniBOLT; it looks like OmniBOLT is a pure token protocol (which allows centralized stablecoins where the issuer controls the supply, so you've to trust it), while Taro and RGB would allow more complex smart contracts, perhaps even algorithmic stablecoins - if this is possible via Lightning
I was not researching any of this options deeply and I don't know exactly how they work, but if something is more complex like you say for Taro protocol, than it means it can potentially have more bugs.
Algorithmic stablecoins can lose peg much more easy that other type of stablecoins and I don't want to use something like that if they are connected with other altcoins in any way.
And I think that whole point of lightning network was supposed to be elimination of need for using bunch of altcoins, and saving on fees.

TARO is plagiarism of RGB concept, with a different, yet incompatible, implementation.
Interesting story and I didnt know about it until now, but there is no real plagiarism in open source if you post correct credits for original authors, or if you fork it.
5083  Other / Meta / Re: Official unofficial forum logo on: April 09, 2022, 06:44:42 PM
It references the liberal and hacky BitcoinTalk way, a bold BBCode tag all in a "Magic Internet Money" vibe but in a minimalist way. It's upper left defies the border intentionally, just as Bitcoin.
You could reproduce it by hand and it would mean the same thing - it would actually be cool to see it copied in different ways.
Idea you had for new BitcoinTalk logo is cool but I think it needs more work and refinement.
We have quite a few active designers in forum and they can try making small updates and post designs for voting and feedback.

Here is my quick update of your logo, that was made in few minutes, and I would like to see something like this on t-shirts and hats Wink

5084  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What do you know about Guarda wallet on: April 09, 2022, 06:18:38 PM
Friends on Reddit are saying Guarda wallet is the best on mobile, how true is this because I can't find information if its open or closed source, I knew I will find real facts on this forum that's why I bring this question to you.
I tested Guarda wallet while ago but only their desktop wallet, and I have to say that I was not impressed at all.
They used old format for bitcoin addresses, and having no support for segwit in 2022 is bad decision in my opinion.
I checked their github page and they are closed source wallet, having only partial stuff released in open source, so I would not suggest anyone to use it.
If you want open source alternative mobile wallet for multiple cryptocurrencies you can try testing unstoppable.money, that has some nice privacy features.
If you want to use wallet only for Bitcoin you should use Bluewallet or Electrum.

5086  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Discussion] Taro: A new protocol for multi-asset Bitcoin and Lightning on: April 08, 2022, 11:02:08 AM
I read about this a couple of days ago, and I also saw Micheal Saylor mentioning it today at the Miami conference, so I wanted to share this with you since I couldn't find any mentions of it on the forum
According to link you send it looks like they are working on adding stable coins and other assets on Lightning Network, but this was already done recently using OMNI Layer and Bitcoin-powered service provider Synonym.
Competition is always good, especially when we see Lightning Network adoption is getting better every day with services and exchanges, but I would like to see more regular people  using it.
5087  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BitPay integrates the lightning network ⚡ on: April 08, 2022, 10:37:15 AM
Actually with their ingratiation with Verifone & Apple I don't think it's a survival thing
Their new partnership is fine, but someone recently posted interesting stats with transactions made by Bitpay and they are gradually declining for some time.
I am not saying for sure they are going to die any time soon, but adding Lightning or new partnerships probably won't change this trend much.

There are so many companies announcing they are accepting and implementing Lightning network right now with robinhood announcing it today as well.
Future is looking bright for this needed service to the bitcoin network and hoping alot more add it to their platforms.
Adding Lightning is great as long as I don't have to send my kyc documents for using this service.
I think that both for Bitpay and for Robinhood you can't use their services at all without verification, but 2022 looks a lot like a year of Lightning Network.
5088  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor Model One wallet and thoughts on: April 07, 2022, 04:47:04 PM
I am narrowing my mind to get a hardware wallet. One that is compatible to various wallets so i can trade on DEX's
I am not using any of the fake Dex exchanges that run on shitcoin networks because they are all centralized, so I can't share my experience on that.
However I do know that many hardware wallets have problem with blind signing that can create a lot of issue with those exchanges.
I wouldn't choose ledger nono S because it only supports few apps and it's stopping with production, nono s plus still doesn't support all apps, and nono X is terrible device with bad battery and firmware issues.
Trezor have similar issues wih blind signing, and I think only Kestone wallet fixed those issue with different approach, but do your own research about that.
5089  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: April 07, 2022, 04:36:05 PM
However, BitBox02 does not trust the secure element and therefore does not store any important information there, such as the seed. So far I only know the BitBox that has such a method. For example, the ledger stores the seed in the secure element.
Maybe I expressed myself wrong or maybe I didn't understand it correctly.
Ah I see now what you wanted to say, they are using different method by encrypting seed words on main microprocessor and they use secure element for key derivation and for random number generator.
Some people would argue that this is inferior model compared to other hardware wallets, because RNG number generator is not really random and if encryption is broken seed words can be easier broken on main processor.
I would much ratter generate my own seed words offline using dices and then import them in Bitbox02 wallet, instead of thrusting some chip to do it for me.

5090  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: LED Bitcoin Dashboard [weekend project] on: April 07, 2022, 04:20:32 PM
This is looking very cool and you finally managed to take a good picture of that LED dashboard  Cheesy
Are you keeping this dashboard running all the time at your home, or you turn it up only when you are home (imagine having one big billboard like this hanged outside your home  Cheesy).
I am sure it spends very little electricity power, but did you ever tested it with for exact power consumption?
5091  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BitPay integrates the lightning network ⚡ on: April 07, 2022, 04:14:56 PM
It's nice to see Bitpay adding Lightning Network, but I think this is one of their last attempt trying to survive after they introduced mandatory kyc verification for all customers.
BTCPayServer is much better open source alternative that also support Lightning with zero fees, without any third parties, and it is self-hosted.
On the other hand, it's clear that Lightning Network is on the rise, as much as some people hate to see that, and more exchanges and services are implementing it.
If you still didn't use LN by 2022 than you are seriously behind and you need to try doing it.
5092  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can a service whose code is close sourced be regarded as decentralized? on: April 07, 2022, 04:07:39 PM
Can a service like a wallet whose code is closed source be decentralized?
It depends what exactly you are talking about, but generally speaking, anything can be decentralized.
I can have decentralized power by splitting one county in several self-governed regions without strong centralized ruler, or I can have some closed source application running software nodes from their own computers running closed source windows os, and that makes this decentralized network.
I prefer having software written in open source code, butt let's be realistic and say this is nearly impossible to achieve for everything.

Does this mean any service that is noncustodial regardless of whether the source code is open or closed = Decentralized?
Something can be noncustodial and be both open source and closed source.
For example, you can have oen source Bitcoin Core or Electrum wallet on one side, and Exodus or Coinomi on the other side, but you are holding the keys for all this wallets.

5094  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Easiest and most secure way to cold store bitcoins on: April 06, 2022, 11:55:42 AM
I want to keep things simple but as unbreakable as possible.
You can't really have both simple easiest and most secure option all in one for storing bitcoin.
Easiest cold storage would be some open source air-gapped hardware wallet or signing device, with seed phrase backup stored on paper or metal.
I like the idea of having mini-computers like this used only for this purpose, and this is easiest option for you, but I won't say it's most secure.
Most secure option is more complex and you need to know what you are doing, one mistake could mean losing of your coins.

5095  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers on: April 06, 2022, 11:44:21 AM
With this mini-experiment, I want to clearly show that 4 words can be applied to 1 washer. 2 on one side and 2 on the back. If reduce the number of letters to 4 (this is enough to identify the desired right word and restore seed-phrase). There is still space for numbering the puck so as not to make a mistake with the word order.
It's not like you are going to drastically reduce size by doing this experiment, and you are increasing chances of mixing up correct ordering of words that could lead to losing of your funds.
Stainless steel washers are dirt cheap, you can buy them anywhere in your local areas, so reducing cost is not appealing enough for me to do this.

Keep in mind that these backups are supposed to withstand extreme conditions, under which a letter may become indecipherable. In such a situation, you'll be happy that you wrote down more than the minimum required 4 letters per word.
When you are talking about extreme weather conditions, I don't know if you know this but 304 stainless steel can easily be corrupted if exposed to salt water, so if you are living in area near sea water I would opt out for better 316 stainless steel.
I am not sure if Jameson Lopp did any tests with salt water, but I believe that is much more realistic threat for some parts of the world compared to acid exposure.

Not all stainless steel is made the same, there are different types and grades, so while 316 SS is better for salt water it does have slightly lower melting point compared to 304 SS:

Grade 304 melting points: 1400-1450°C (2552-2642°F)
Grade 316 melting points: 1375-1400°C (2507-2552°F)
Grade 430 melting points: 1425-1510°C (2597-2750°F)
Grade 434 melting points: 1426-1510°C (2600-2750°F)
Grade 410 melting points: 1480-1530°C (2696-2786°F)
Grade 420 melting points: 1450-1510°C (2642-2750°F)

Pick 304 if you want high temperature resistance, or pick 316 if you want high corrosion resistance.

5096  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: April 06, 2022, 11:15:03 AM
Passport Batch 2 using Microchip 608a secure element and BitBox02 ATECC608B?

Does Passport have a "dual chip" security concept like BitBox02 too?
Passport batch 2 hardware wallet is using same chips like previous batch_one device, that is ATECC608A + STM32H753.
STM32 is general purpose microchip, ATECC608A is secure element used for storing seed phrases, and ATECC608B secure element is just improved version with security fixes.
As far as I know only BitBox02 hardware wallet is using B version of that secure element in combination with microchip ATSAMD51J20A.
To conclude, both hardware wallets are using dual-chip security concept, like most other hardware wallets available today that use secure elements.
5097  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Is there is Exchange Platforms without KYC & Instantly exchange? on: April 06, 2022, 09:32:49 AM
Is there is Exchange Platforms without KYC & Instantly exchange?

also with instant withdrawals, is there is such a platform?
Best decentralized exchange you can use without kyc is Bisq.network, you don't have to send any verification documents and you can trade with coins and fiat currencies.
You are holding private keys for your coins in non-custodial wallet so you don't even have to withdraw them to other wallets if you don't want to do that.
Instant exchanges can work but they have much higher risk and some of them are known for holding customer funds.
For all other no-kyc exchanges check out kycnot website:

5098  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S Plus on: April 05, 2022, 06:00:02 PM
Ledger nono S Plus is now available for purchase on ledger official website, and price is the same like for Genesis Edition, that is €79 plus shipping.
Before anyone decides to purchase this device I would recommend reading previous posts to find information about early issues and apps that are currently not supported by this wallet.
https://shop.ledger.com/products/ledger-nano-s-plus

Ledger removed old model nono S from comparison page in preparation for stopping it's production, so now you can only compare model S plus with model X:

5099  Other / Meta / Re: Phishing warning on PM on: April 05, 2022, 11:56:45 AM
From when this was introduced? Is there any announcement?
I never received anything similar, so this is probably some recent change, maybe because we are seeing more and more phishing attacks recently, not only in bitcointalk forum but in general.
It doesn't really matter what rank and trust accounts have, because they can all be hacked and used for phishing attacks.
Let's wait for official announcement and explanation from theymos and/or moderators.
5100  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor exporting Transaction history error on: April 05, 2022, 11:47:48 AM
So, I got the last ubuntu distro on a usb drive, got a laptop running the live distribution and installed the Suite again. Took another cable, I know it's not relevant but just in case, and tried to export the transactions...
If same thing is happening both with wiNd0ws and Linux than I am starting to think you are having some hardware related issue, maybe with your memory, and I wrote before that error you are facing means you are running out of memory.
Maybe try temporary replacing or removing one of the RAM slots from your laptop and see if anything changes, or try monitoring system resources with and without Trezor Suite and other applications running.
Last step would be contacting Trezor support, to see if they can help you somehow, or try using totally different computer with that USV stick (old laptop, old dekstop, etc.).

How long time it takes to get file done?
It was instantly in my case, worst case it should be few seconds.
