5281  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Magazine on: January 31, 2012, 05:53:14 AM
Now I'm the one who must be missing something here. Why would the distributors for magazines to Barnes and Noble (of which there are two) come to bitcointalk.org and try to hunt down the magazine editor's profile so that they could make a judgement of whether or not to distribute the magazine based off of my forum avatar? Are you tripping balls? Did you think Bitcoin Magazine was a company-less project I'm doing on my own 'after school'? BitTalk Media Ltd is a registered UK company with numerous shareholders who are quite well known in Bitcoin for their professionalism and activism to Bitcoin, of which Bitcoin Magazine is a product (with an additional 12 professional contributors). I hold equity in the company, but Bitcoin Magazine os not mine. I do not try to name things after myself on a forum and draw the community away from the useful functionality it already has like some people. I am sipporting the community and giving them a voice.

I understand this is all very new to you and you probably don't know any of the work I do. It's fine. Just try to keep your advice relative to the magazine in the form of questions and suggestions instead of pretending you know what's going on.

I mean, so far you've been factually incorrect on the majority of your preconceptions merely bacause you are bias towards me. Let's get back on track. The hundreds of subscribers so far have not bothered to complain about "STFU" or "Matthew doesn't act mature enough to represent the community" (which is an honest fear of mine regardless), instead they're intelligent-- they're waiting on the product to actually be released before they pass judgement.

(Btw, do you think I should erase all my videos on youtube also, just in case? And my facebook? Maybe I should start censoring everything I say and do now, even though professional distributors judge the magazine based on the contents...)
5282  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Magazine on: January 31, 2012, 05:13:20 AM
In case it is unclear, it is possible to be funny without being a turnoff to your intended audience.
Good advice. I have felt the same way from day one, and no one has let me forget it.

Perhaps STFU should be removed, as "Vicente" seemed to suggest.  It's good advice.  Hope I haven't asked too much.

It will probably stay despite your efforts, but that's not a reflection of my personal feelings about your request-- it just seems to be unfounded imo and blown out of proportion. Rally some troops together who agree and I think it'll have a more lasting impact than someone who claims my avatar is relative to the magazine's success.  Roll Eyes

Thank you though. Regardless of what everyone in this thread is saying, I'm soaking it all in very well and I trust I'll make the right decision on these matters.

Cheers
5283  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Magazine on: January 31, 2012, 04:19:03 AM
Not exactly.  Just in case it's not very clear, this doesn't represent your stated target age range very well.  "Suck my dick" is funny to boys in the age range of 9-13 years old.  It loses its charm quickly thereafter.
Bottom line: my avatar is completely irrelevant to an argument about the contents of the magazine. My avatar is not being published in the magazine. Your opinion of my avatar means absolutely nothing to me, as it shouldn't.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against profanity.  But putting STFU there in and of itself isn't really funny.

Thank you Mike. Your opinion has been written down and will be carefully considered. It's important to note that the screen shots for the magazine (for which you haven't seen yet) are just mock-ups and the actual magazine is still in design until 6 days from today's date.

They may very well be right.  They are probably referring to other things you are doing that are clearly neat, and not the potty humor.

Obviously. The potty humor is a non-issue. It doesn't bother me to take it out at all. It doesn't bother me to take it out because even one person suggests it. What bothers me is the ridiculous comment about my avatar and why you think that has anything to do with the magazine. It just wreaks of pettiness, jealousy and 'old man' attitude.

I am sure people will laugh so hard they will snort their chocolate milk all over the cafeteria floor.  Your magazine doesn't have to be dry, it's just, if you want to appeal to 18-41 year olds, then you should consider the advice of 18-41 year olds.
Considered and duly noted. I'm absolutely sure everyone is anxious to see how the first issue comes out and I'm equally sure that the support I've received is clear to the direction this magazine will take. Thank you for your support.
5284  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Magazine on: January 31, 2012, 03:27:01 AM
What I wish is that this magazine weren't rife with immaturity.  Especially if it's going into "Barnes & Noble".

No one but me has even seen the magazine yet. It's not published yet. I love constructive criticism and everything, but to judge 64 pages of patiently written articles, features and specials on some cover art and a table of contents is a bit-- eh.. Basically, "Are you a wizard?"

This appears to be a magazine written by an immature teenager for an immature teenage audience.
Our target audience is 18~41. You must be 42 Sad

If this magazine is seriously meant to further the interests of the Bitcoin community, then it is absolutely unconscionable that its editor in chief has the words "Suck my dick" on his avatar.
Christ. So now I'm breaking the internet laws and the magazine will fail because of my forum avatar? Some of us have bold and hilarious personalities. Get used to it.

And then we open to the first page, where the typography has been cleverly stacked so that the page reads "STFU" when viewed from a distance.  There is no good reason for this.

I agree. I can totally omit that. Vicente, one of our staff had already mentioned that. "Is it really necessary Matthew?" and I said "No, but the people who get it will think it's funny and the people who don't, won't have an opinion".

That said, have you ever seen "Maxim magazine"? I think they owe the majority of their success to bold and subtle humor as well. If you'd like to recommend other bold and subtle ways to be humorous than just "ST+FU", I am most certainly all ears. If you're arguing that humor shouldn't be a part of the magazine, good luck with that, no one who has supported the magazine so far agrees with you.

I fully support the idea of having a Bitcoin magazine, but someone must GTFU (grow the fuck up) if it's to be taken seriously.

I know where you're coming from and read you loud and clear. Everyone in Bitcoin is now breathing down my neck to make sure this goes right. That said, I mentioned possibly giving up my equity later on when we find someone better suited to make the magazine and do you know what someone told me?

"Matthew, don't you dare step down. You give this magazine personality."

*cough*

P.S. Mike, do you know why my avatar has a bus saying "suck my dick"?

Just tell me where you find those animated gifs...

The bus one made me laugh pretty hard...

Because I enjoy making people laugh. If you want a super-serious magazine that is completely boring and devoid of any life, go start one with Bruce Wagner.
5285  Economy / Speculation / Re: From this point, what price do we see next? on: January 30, 2012, 10:27:53 PM
I'm new to trading that's for sure, but I've got the gist of it enough now to know that the price rises in part due to speculation, so maybe I can help some of you make some good decisions this next week.

I'll be spending $10,000USD on Bitcoin over the next week and I hope that helps everyone understand both my dedication to bitcoin and to help decide it's worth for the small value that I back it with.

Cheers

Our apologies to Mr. Shrem and the community for the poor connection and slow framerate. Our hardware was having hiccups which are being handled right now. If we can fix the source videos, we'll reupload this interview at a later date.

Love the new website, great work! It looks like spot #98 is still open... Can I make another pledge? This time on behalf of fpgamining.com. 10+ still applies. Thanks!

Actually, I just counted--- there are 104 donators (and 86 is taken twice -_-;; )
5289  Other / Off-topic / Re: Logo Battle Royal Round 2 (aka "I want to give away even more Bitcoins") on: January 30, 2012, 05:40:49 PM
So since I got so much great feedback I decided to go for a round 2.

The question is simple "Which one is better?".  It is very subjective but that's what I want; your totally subjective unsupported first reaction.   There is no wrong answer.

Logo "A"

Logo "B"

For wasting your valuable time (all 30 seconds or so) I will be giving away a genuine late vintage Bitcoin to a random person who replies to this thread.  That is like an hourly wage of 120 Bitcoins.  WOW.

Yes you must reply.  I can't see who votes (stupid forum software limitation).  So no reply = no Bitcoin.

FAQ (Frequently Anticipated Questions)
What is the logo for?
BZZZT.  You lose.  First subjective reaction.  Stop thinking too hard.

Can I cheat and reply but not vote to get the coin?
Yup.  If you want to rob me of your free opinion you can and I won't try and stop you.

So if I spam this thread with a lot of replies I increase my chance of winning?
Nope.  Only the first response you make counts towards the drawing.

What if I don't have a good comment?
You don't need to.  "I voted, you better pay me!" is fine.

I am a noob how can I participate?
Sorry keeping up with the noob thread last time as a pain in the arse.  Good news is to be a non-noob (yes that is the unofficial name for Junior members) you just need 5 posts and 5 hours logged in.  So spam the hell out of the noob board and hit that refresh button (login timer stops after 10 min or so).  Come on man this is a whole Bitcoin, what are you waiting for?

Are you aware your water chip is going to malfunction because the water is flowing off the edge (aka logo B is broken)?
Yes.  I like malfunctioning imaginary water chips.

Rules for drawing (not important until you don't win).
1) I generated a random number between 0 & 1 (no not an integer silly).
2) I put it in a secret message and SHA-256 hashed the message (this provides proof I didn't game the drawing I mean we are talking about a WHOLE Bitcoin).
3) The hash is: AEF751403C2BE89C84DF75C0A1584471DC98EB6512805DA8EA26E82BAADE3D4A
4) When voting is closed the winning post # = ROUNDDOWN ( (total # of votes from the poll) * (secret number) )
5) I can't win and only the first post by a person counts.  If the winning post is invalid I go to the next post.
6) If by some bizarre circumstances I get to the last post (or the winning post > total # of posts) the counting loops around to first post.
7) Yes I actually spent time thinking of these rules.

Quoted for truth.

Also, I believe the first logo looks much better. The entire concept is bizarre alone, but if you're going to go for it, I wouldn't choose the design that plays with your depth perception. Simplicity is crucial in a logo that will be reused over and over.
5290  Economy / Speculation / Re: Ummm guys we're in Forbes on: January 30, 2012, 05:03:57 PM
EDIT: I do question anyone's ability to "ship" an AK-47 to a country that outlaws such an item for consumer purchase. How lucky do you have to be to actually receive one with all the security in the postal services of the world these days? They open a box of cookies if I order to South Korea for god's sake.

Really? I get packages all the time. Like probably something approaching 40 in the 4 years I've lived in Korea. 2 of those have been opened by Korean customs. One of those had a bottle of advil in it that was in the box it comes from the store. The package was opened, and the store box was opened, but the bottle itself was still sealed, so they obviously weren't really all that serious about seeing what was in there.

None of these packages has ever had duty assessed.

To be at least somewhat on topic, as far as shipping guns, they probably just take it apart and ship it in pieces in different packages. Probably no laws against shipping pieces of metal, plastic, and wood around.

In Korea, you can't ship gun parts either. Owning gun parts is also illegal here. Although I agree with you that customs may be lax in actually checking packages, whenever an x-ray is done and anything even remotely like a gun is being sent, they confiscate it. I can't even get paintball gun gas canisters sent or allowed in my luggage.
5291  Economy / Services / Re: Introducing the Bitcoin100: A Kickstarter for Charities on: January 30, 2012, 04:53:06 PM
Public television run by volunteers isnt a service or a charity organisation? What do you call it then ? After all the hit pieces in the media about bitcoin you dont want to support a media startup that will disrupt their lying and propaganda ?

There are already several projects underway to help disrupt the propaganda and they are not on our list. I don't mean to be harsh but it sounds like your focusing on a group of protesters who's biggest need is electricity to charge their iPhones. There are millions of people in the world who lack basic needs, that is where I would like to see our bitcoins go. It's not just about Bitcoin. As I said before, start a separate donation thread and see what the interest is. I'll be happy to give a donation there.

Totally true, but you really have to pick your battles. The way I see it, you can only solve one problem at a time. Is it going to be keeping some silly kids alive a few more days, or is it going to be helping to change the world's political system?

I'd say buy everyone a tank and the problem is solved.

5292  Economy / Speculation / Re: Ummm guys we're in Forbes on: January 30, 2012, 04:43:38 PM
Nothing about this article is good for Bitcoin, but it does make me want to go buy some AK-47s.

EDIT: I do question anyone's ability to "ship" an AK-47 to a country that outlaws such an item for consumer purchase. Sorry, Sad

I get defensive alot...bad habit...

It's alright, it takes a while to get used to the hive-mind attitude around here. The sooner you get used to it, the sooner they stop being able to pick up your scent. You'd think becoming more known would make you a bigger target, but this community's one and only enemy seems to be anonymity, something they claim to embrace.

It's a double edged sword.
5294  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Do you own a bitcoin business? If so... on: January 30, 2012, 04:20:38 PM
is there a halal/kosher version ?

If you mean is there a version that won't have scantly clad women, cursing, violence, advertisements for smokes or drugs, etc, then yes, that would be the "educational version" we are offering to educational institutions internationally.

5295  Economy / Lending / Re: *****************SCAM ALERT***************** on: January 30, 2012, 04:10:15 PM
1BYwQ9bYxatmtL5GadfA5d5Jn6mMHJU3gZ I ordered 2 magazines you have my name and address, jesus.

also:

Edit: I looked into it, and I see that isn't possible. However, he looks clean. I'll get back to you guys on the IP check.

edit2: "desperate and unoriginal" no not desperate at all. I no longer want the loan, I'm not a drug addictict I'm not jonesing for a fix I don't need 1 btc, I would have liked the loan but I certainly don't need it. I am however frustrated I'll go down in history as a scammer despite overwhelming evidence I'm not simpley because I can't gpg authenticate. I guess gpg key > has access to forum account, has acess to gpg email account, has access to forum email account, has the exact same geo location....

LOL.....

Chris, I was just answering the question, I wasn't talking about you ^_^

Quote
Riddle me this what kind of scammer makes a series of mundane posts before trying to pull off a 5 dollar scam?

A confidence man, mostly desperate and unoriginal, and more than likely a teenager unable to earn money on their own. Next question?

That's the feeling I got as well. We'll find out on our side in a week or so for the Bitcoin Magazine.

Are you going to interview the company for next issue?

No product has shipped so I believe Inaba is the only one who has had physical access.  Luke also IIRC had remote access to a single.

Yep. They agreed to meet us at our UK offices where Vladimir Marchenko will do his testing and confirm capabilities etc.

We were planning on doing the review in this issue, but it's not looking like it's going to happen in time  Undecided

5297  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Any companies selling domains for BT? on: January 30, 2012, 02:51:33 PM
I can broker a domain purchase in bitcoins.
Lol. Bad idea buddy.
Tell me the horror story, or would it be a bad idea for OP?

It's the equivelant of you renting a house in your name for him. The only way to give it to him fair and square would cost him the same fee you paid x2 so it's extremely inefficient and on top of that, you'd be registering it with your credentials which means:

1) You could take it back from him if you were a cheat; or

2) You could get in trouble for his actions in using the domain.

There are obviously certain conditions that could be met, but I'd say just stay away from registering domains for other people altogether. ^_^

5298  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Do you own a bitcoin business? If so... on: January 30, 2012, 02:49:02 PM
...

I'm not the Marketing Director for Bitcoin Magazine, but I'd say that we want to stay away from anything any more complicated than direct referrals. Our content is worth something, and complicating the purchasing process or creating an elaborate reward scheme screams to me that the product itself is not worth enough for people to want to buy it on their own.

That could just be my own naivety though.
5299  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Do you own a bitcoin business? If so... on: January 30, 2012, 02:46:57 PM
What would be the cost per printed version of the magazine(in dollars)?, In what countries do you want to sell the printed version?.

I would love a copy, as it seems nice as a method to tell people in real life about bitcoin and that bitcoin has legitimate businesses too.

The printed version of the magazine is currently $6 USD and that also includes free shipping inside the USA.

We will ship internationally for a small fee for the first month, then reflect on the losses the second month and adjust our prices accordingly.

If you'd like a copy, don't hesitate! http://www.bitcoinmagazine.net ^_^

Quite a few people are ordering 20+ issues to sell on their own in their community (saves on shipping) and to distribute to places they think will help get the word out about Bitcoin.

I ask that everyone support us in the very least with a subscription to the digital version. That is where we make the most money, and the more money we pull in, the more we can spend on printing fees (i.e. we can print more issues, send them out to even more stores, get even more exposure, etc).

From my interactions with them, I don't think it was B.  I honestly think they had an overly optimistic design and release schedule.

That's the feeling I got as well. We'll find out on our side in a week or so for the Bitcoin Magazine.

I hope anyone who has had any experience with the singles (no speculation, just actual experience) sends us their comments, complains and professional opinions in email to bittalk.tv@gmail.com

If they're fake, we'll expose them. If they're real, we'll support them. Whatayagonnado.
