5361  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Have you spoken to Satoshi ? on: November 10, 2021, 03:40:26 PM
Adam Back is Satoshi. I plan on doing a write-up about this.

I hate to post something like this without all the evidence

I doubt that you can come with a proper evidence.
However, you can ask nicely Adam Back to sign a message that, amongst other things contains the date of signing and his name. Of course, signed with one of known "Satoshi addresses".

I’m just kind of curious how many people around here have been around long enough to have spoken to Satoshi

Maybe not spoken, but discussed on the forum - there may be a few, but I doubt that they're still active here, they have their businesses now.
Hence, instead of asking here, maybe you can gather a list of users from the early topics.

it makes me wonder what he was like when speaking with them

Really? Most probably those who knew him as Satoshi have never spoken with him face-to-face, instead they've used forum(s) or e-mail(s).
5362  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sweden proposed to ban mining in the European Union on: November 10, 2021, 03:06:20 PM
It would have been nice to add a source. I've found this one: https://ambcrypto.com/swedens-fsa-calls-for-energy-intensive-mining-of-crypto-assets-to-be-prohibited/

Quote
Sweden needs the renewable energy targeted by crypto-asset producers for the climate transition of our essential services, and increased use by miners threatens our ability to meet the Paris Agreement. Energy-intensive mining of crypto-assets should therefore be prohibited.

I find it overly harsh, but I also expect some of the politicians join this kind of movements especially now since the Methane and electricity prices rose so high (imho exactly because of politics not well thought, but implemented in a hurry). I fail to understand how on earth they cannot see that if they ban it, they will only make it illegal, not actually stop it.
5363  Other / Meta / Re: Why nutildah has been temp banned on: November 10, 2021, 01:50:56 PM
has been carried away by emotions, getting unnecessarily entrenched in a position.

I really hope that he cools and comes back. Getting carried away by emotions can do way too much of harm and one has to understand that this is exactly what scammers are looking for.
I don't want to imagine how many tagged account may just get "whitened" if nutildah loses DT status...
5364  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 10, 2021, 10:23:08 AM
edit: can we just burn satoshis bitcoin? can someone make a BIP? Smiley

1. I can't think of a proper way to do it and it would be a dangerous precedent.
2. Even if this would be done, CSW would not stop. The way to stop him would be to prove in court that math cannot be twisted (I fail to understand why court is needed for that, but it seems that's needed) and CSW is a scammer; that may cut his funding.
5365  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can you put away your arrogance? on: November 10, 2021, 09:20:34 AM
1. Price of anything can go up as well as down so the price is not bound to grow. People thought MySpace was going to grow forever and look where it is now (just an example).

You may have a point here, price is bound to grow as long as people are interested by the topic.
Facebook made people lose interest in myspace and.. that's basically end of story there. On the same page something really better than bitcoin may need to emerge to make people "forget" about bitcoin.

2. Currencies are backed by the economies, stocks are backed by companies' profits. On the other hand, Bitcoin has no intrinsic value, so once the hype goes away and people switch to something new, the value of bitcoin will diminish.

Then how comes that without any change in the economy they decide to just print a couple more billions of dollars? I find those even more a definition for something with "no intrinsic value".
I'll come with your example about myspace: company's profits may turn south very easy, isn't that investment gambling then?
And the fact that big companies, with people hired to think this over very good, turn their reserves into bitcoin tells me that it's not just an ordinary hype.

3. Crypto market is unregulated so it's a very scammy industry and regular folks should stay away from it unless they are happy to give money to scammer.

While a lot of altcoin projects were scams, bitcoin proved itself in his 12 years that it's not a cheap scam.
Most of those scams are targeting the people too greedy to sit back and think it over, so I would not be worried about them.
Your generalization would be like "I see every days at TV that cars are crashing and people are dying, so don't buy a car, it's not good".
And regulations.. they are coming. In some countries faster than the other, but they're coming. Hence if you look a little bit around you can easily find reputable businesses you can work with.

Of course, it's easier to just come and bash/complain than look a bit around and read more. But it's your opinion, do as you think. Bitcoin is clearly not for everybody, some will always find it unsafe or too expensive.
5366  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BINANCE VISA CARD: your thoughts / Alternatives on: November 10, 2021, 08:59:25 AM
What are your thoughts about this card?
Can you spend your coins on the fly?

Really offering 8% cashback as advertised?

1. There are already a number of topics on this matter, I think that best one is: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5276231.0
2. Afaik they do give cashback, but you have a huge amount of BNB deposited there for that. So, for normal mortals, the cashback is 0.1% (iirc it's 1% cashback - 0.9% fees); the cashback is there only when you're shopping, the withdrawals don't have cashback
3. The only fee I am aware of is that 0.9%, which, as you can see, is usually covered by the default cashback
4. My experience with the card was written here and on that topic you'll find other users' experience.
5. There are alternatives, but not necessarily better and it depends greatly on where you live. Overall problems are:
* others may have bigger fees than Binance
* it's nice that you can benefit of the integration with Binance exchange
* it allows alos on-the-fly conversion of your crypto when shopping, but at least at first it didn't work that good and may have been also more costly, so exchange and top up with fiat is usually a good idea
* Binance's card is actually issued by Contis Financial Services and it's not well accepted everywhere; but it's by far not the only crypto card getting transactions rejected now and then.

Since I think that asking over and over again the same questions is unproductive, my advice is to continue the discussion in the topic I've linked. Most of OP's questions may already be answered there.
5367  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Wallet Migration on: November 10, 2021, 08:38:48 AM
You're right, and I can't seem to do that migration even though the electrum option gives me the [I already have seed] option. I just tried it and it didn't work. But since I have no urgency about wallet with two-factor authentication then I can forget about it for now. Without asking then I guess I never know if the feature works and how it works. Good you gave me quick understanding, I know more now. Thanks

1. I don't think that Electrum 2FA can work with an old seed. You'll need to make a fresh wallet with 2FA and send your coins there.
2. I think that the added security by this 2FA feature is not big and it's not worth it.
3. Keep in mind that you'll have to pay for using the Electrum 2FA feature.
4. From [2] and [3] I'd conclude that it may worth considering the use of Electrum with a hardware wallet instead of 2FA.

5370  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BlockFi/Celsius vs Cold Wallet on: November 10, 2021, 08:06:56 AM
I saw an interview with the celsius CEO and he claims that they are able to give higher interest because they keep less of the profits from lending out money than the banks etc..

The thing is that the crypto related legislation is incomplete or even missing in many countries. Crypto is very easy to lose and in many cases one will not be able to clearly prove it was a hack or it was an inside job.
This being said, most won't risk their investment for some extra cents, especially as bitcoin itself gives much bigger returns that one could dream of.
Is this the future of financial system? Maybe. But we're not there yet. Don't forget that before a nice calm U.S. of A. there was the wild-wild-west...
5371  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where to store your keys? on: November 09, 2021, 06:13:00 PM
Swiss Crypto VaultExternal link is positioning itself as a quasi-private bank...
[...]
Because the vault does not mix client assets with the company’s own balance sheet

So instead of storing the seed somewhere really safe, let's give our money to others to keep them safe... for us or for themselves?
Not your keys, not your coins. Even if I'd own 2000 BTC, I would still not use such a service.

If I’ve done my research correctly , these vaults were owned by Xapo and were sold to Coinbase . I would certainly not trust Coinbase with 1 satoshi of mine !

Well, if you would have been reading the page of text from the link, you would have known that
Quote
Another Swiss-based crypto firm Xapo opened a vault in the Swiss Alps, but Swiss Crypto Vault says its technology is unique.

But the conclusion stands Grin

Edit:
For the article, it's quite and old one since it's from 2018. Is there any update with that article?

Wow, good catch.
5372  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Classic Multibit 0.5.18 recovery with 16 words passphrase help please on: November 09, 2021, 04:24:53 PM
I have then bought a hard wallet (Ledger Nano S) to which Chris transfer the BTC they recovered, so I have now my bitcoin back and it's now kept in a secure wallet.

I'm glad it ended well. And very nice of you to come back with a feedback.
Now make sure you keep super safe some copies of the seed for that hardware wallet  Smiley
5373  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I missed the boat is not new concept.. on: November 09, 2021, 04:08:17 PM
Buying BTC at ATH is not a good idea, we must buy when its bearish.

That's correct, but it's not how human psychology works. ATH brings enthusiasm, ATH brings FOMO, ATH has bigger chance for one to open his wallet. If he has the patience to get over the next "crypto winter", he has won.
On the other hand, in a bear market people tend to wait and wait and wait again for lower price, then they're fear the price will never rise again, then.. oops, it's ATH again. And this is how some find reasons after reasons for staying away.

While I agree ATH is not a best moment to invest, if one made his mind, best is to DCA, whether there's ATH or not: buy multiple smaller amounts over longer period of time. This way one will clearly not buy always at ATH, this way one may even have the opportunity to buy the dip and the overall sentiment and investment may look really good. But, again, one has to be sure on what he's doing, one has to understand bitcoin, from what limited supply means to the market wild fluctuations and wallet security too.
5374  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BlockFi/Celsius vs Cold Wallet on: November 09, 2021, 03:22:11 PM
BlockFi/Celsius is paying interest on BTC and will store your bitcoin vs Cold wallet (more security, but no interest)

I don't have a ton of crypto assets so wondering if it's even worth dealing with cold wallet.

what are people's opinions on this?

I find BlockFi/Celsius even more dangerous than - let's say a custodian web wallet.
But of course, it always depends on how you perceive those coins. If you want to risk them, it's really up to you. I have done my share of stupid things too when I was young into crypto. But if you want to keep them safe.. well.. keep them safe.
And for keeping your coins safe you don't necessarily need a cold wallet either, especially if you don't want to spend and you know (or are willing to learn) how to safely generate a paper wallet for long time holding.
5375  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Binance and Coinbase on: November 09, 2021, 03:13:33 PM
What interests me most is how they got such a perfect domain. I think a lot of money was spent, but will it pay off?

I don't think it was expensive. Although it contains the name of 2 major known exchanges, the domain is not that much useful and the comparison (which I didn't see) can be done on a free blog as well.
While I don't agree that "a lot of money" could have been spent there, I still don't think it will pay off. The use of that website is very limited.
5376  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What if Covid 19 broke the 4 year market cycle? on: November 09, 2021, 02:22:57 PM
Covid 19 just halted nearly everything in this planet for a very long time, so why wouldn't it affect all market cycles with it

While COVID probably had its effects, I think that institutional investors (Bakkt, MicroStrategy, Tesla, ...) were those with a very big effects, which we cannot even measure yet. They've thrown a snowball down the hill and it's becoming more and more an avalanche with JPMorgan or MasterCard joining in.
I don't know how this market "cycle" will go, I don't know when and how will it end, but it may be indeed different from the others. And iirc this was "predicted" since before COVID came in.
5377  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: how to back wallet access via file on: November 09, 2021, 01:38:14 PM
i think someone who is a forum member from 2015 or earlier and is still active on the forum can help.

Those screenshots don't give any info about where they come from. I am not even convinced that the second is indeed a wallet.
It's you who should try to remember if you've used a web service or a wallet application on your computer, it's you who should remember what was that application / service, maybe how it did look like, maybe the file name/extension of the files you made screenshot from...
Without a bit more info, I don't see real chance for getting any help.

Of course, don't post the whole file, don't post private keys and don't answer to possible private messages claiming they can help if you give them the files.
5378  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger wallet technical issues - Can't send any crypto. on: November 09, 2021, 09:51:15 AM
I tried different amount and not one works... Only really low amounts works (0.0005)

I would also recommend Electrum with Ledger. That's how I use my Nano S since I've bought it and it never failed me, while people keep complaining about Ledger Live.
Just make sure you download Electrum from electrum.org and verify it before use.

The small amounts may be related to glitches, may be related to dust amounts/inputs, may be related to funds (spent or not) not correctly seen by Ledger Live. You have a better chance to get help here after migrating to Electrum.

In Electrum I advise you pick BTC as main currency instead of mBTC, set the transaction preferences for showing advanced preview and maybe display also the Addresses and Coins tabs to see what you actually have there.
5379  Economy / Reputation / Re: @bitbollo and @Murat were abusing trust feedback on: November 09, 2021, 09:28:24 AM
While iirc it's not the first drama Murat is involved in (which may or may not mean something fishy), the fact bitbollo tagged him because he was not accepted is, indeed, pathetic.
While a normal user may be OK to put negative trust because he doesn't trust another user, a DT1 has bigger responsibility in using the feedback system.

Without more solid proof, a neutral tag for being unprofessional, would have been a good warning sign without the unnecessary drama.
Again, the lack of response may or may not mean something fishy. Campaign managers are human too; they make mistakes and they have a life. And probably preferences too.

I fear that bitbollo, who had very good points in the case of Italian translations, for example, may suffer as a result of this rushed action.  Undecided

Edit: also Murat should have been telling only about the misuse/abuse of trust system. The part related to signature campaigns makes it look as a retaliatory feedback, hence I agree to OP: both did wrong.
Edit2: fun fact:
Murat's judgement is Trusted by:
1. funchiestz (Trust: # +0 / =0 / -9) (92 Merit earned) (Trust list) (BPIP)
2. bitbollo (Trust: +9 / =0 / -0) (DT1! (5) 1033 Merit earned) (Trust list) (BPIP)
5380  Economy / Speculation / Mastercard to launch crypto-linked payment cards in Asia Pacific on: November 09, 2021, 09:07:16 AM
Mastercard to launch crypto-linked payment cards in Asia Pacific

I don't know where to put this news, really. I was thinking it could go for Press, and if you think it's better suited there I'll move it. But I feel like it's more for speculation and I'll tell why.
Mastercard has already a partnership with Wirex - I think that's way more than a year already - and they offer crypto cards from that partnership. They've also announced back in February that they'll make this new step.
So the news about partnership with Amber, CoinJar and Bitkub and the prospects to launch crypto cards in APAC is not that much of news, it's more.. for speculation / pump.

Quote
Following the partnership, consumers and merchants in the APAC region will soon be able to obtain crypto-backed Mastercard debit, credit, and prepaid cards. This access could simplify the use of cryptocurrencies for users in the region.

From what I know, crypto enthusiasts already have options for crypto cards in APAC region, but not the full variety (is TenX still in business?). I don't understand how crypto credit cards will work, will the credit be in crypto or fiat?
Also they're rather unclear if the merchants have the option to receive crypto or only fiat.
And I don't like that the only option presented is conversion on-the-fly. I like to also have the option to convert to fiat when I want to, before shopping/spending that fiat.

The market seems to have reacted greatly to this.. news (as I said, not really news), I'm curious what will happen when this program gets properly implemented.

We already have a new ATH. Will this move the price way beyond 70k? Or will a cool down happen? Or, actually, the buying pressure is big enough and the new ATH is not related to this news?
