541  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Anon136's NXT Giveaway Thread (weighted by forum notoriety) on: January 05, 2014, 07:25:31 AM
I'd love some at 4464056056753579487

when I go to the nxt block explorer* it would be great to see something besides a message that says:
"Noting found. Please check your number and try again."

At this point I'm still worried I did something wrong  at set-up Huh  Cry

coinmarketcap lists this thing at $57M. Does anyone own any or gotten the client to work/do anything?
543  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Two Factor Auth Problems with Coinbase on: January 01, 2014, 08:41:31 PM
I set up google authenticator on coinbase for the first time and when I log in it never asks me for a code... so how does this thing work?

It works at mcxnow just fine (that is, if I only enter a password I don;t get in, but if I enter the password and 6-digit code form the authenticator I do get in). So I'm not sure if it's working on coinbase...
544  Economy / Gambling / Re: SealsWithClubs.eu | Largest Bitcoin Poker Site | No Banking | Fast Cashouts on: December 28, 2013, 06:21:38 PM
I sent in a request to Seals for a 1.000 BTC withdrawal on 12/23 and it hasn't gone through yet. It is sitting in the "pending queue." Should I cancel it and retry?

yes and get up and try again never give up

Received - thanks!

546  Bitcoin / Legal / Time to start thinking about taxes on: November 23, 2013, 07:16:54 PM
US / IRS: has the IRS provided any guidance on virtual currencies yet? If I had to file today my stance would be to file gains as an asset-based capital gain that would be calculated very simply as follows:

Bill bought 1.0 BTC on 6/1/2013 for $10
Bill sold 1.0 BTC on 11/22/2013 for $890 (you can also deduct trade/wire fees, e.g. coinbase)

Bill reports $880 in long terms capital gains (an capital asset held for more than 1 year).

But what the real questions becomes, is how does the IRS classify bitcoin? Searching for "bitcoin" at irs.gov yields 0 results. Is it a commodity or a currency or capital asset? Forbes weighs in here http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertwood/2013/05/02/irs-takes-a-bite-out-of-bitcoin/:

"In the meantime, the tax rules seem pretty clear. If you provide services or sell goods for Bitcoin, you have income. If you exchange Bitcoins for cash, whether you have gain may depend on whether Bitcoin is really currency or commodity. The latter seems more likely, meaning you have gain to the extent of the appreciation in your Bitcoin."

It's strange to start out the comment with "the rules seem pretty clear," because I was thinking just the opposite.

And then there's the question to file anything on a schedule D in the first place. You have to name the asset so is this putting yourself on a federal radar by listing "bitcoin" or "digital currency asset" or the like in column A? If you made a few $K or less it might be a wait-and-see approach but if you made more than that and you're lucky enough to get a field audit they are going to want to know what those $10k+ deposits are.

One approach may be to just file it under "other income" and pay income rates. This may even be preferable for some folks who have no other income. If you file MFJ you get to almost $90k before rising out of the 15% bracket anyhow. But if you're already in a pretty high bracket there's a big difference between LTCG (20%) or short term gain (28%) and the highest income bracket (39.6%) [note that there's an additional 3.8% tax for obamacare I think that affects some people's investment income, which would be added to the long/short 20/28% investment rates:
https://www.fidelity.com/viewpoints/personal-finance/taxpayers-guide)

Anyway, let's kick off the discussion for US-based folks. With BTC up 30,000% in 2 years, you can bet your bippy the IRS is watching. What are people's thoughts (especially accountants!!!  Grin )

547  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 21, 2013, 08:19:03 PM
Demand for bitcoin hasn't even really begun yet, IMO.

Sure it's bubblicious, but putting an upper bound on a bubble is impossible. Is it the current ATH (900), is it 10x that, a 100x???
548  Economy / Exchanges / Re: MtGox withdrawal delays [Gathering] on: November 20, 2013, 09:09:11 PM
I just added a bank account for an incoming international wire at Gox. It's still "greyed out," how long until I can actually select it? Anyone know?

Also, I just did a BTC withdrawal from Gox and it took in a few minutes. You need to move at least 1.0 BTC though (and I paid the small fee).
549  Economy / Economics / Re: major Senate hearing on bitcoin, watch live! on: November 18, 2013, 10:29:57 PM
Basic rundown:

Senator -

Is the analogy to the early days of the internet an apt one?  It would have been a massive mistake to kill that.  Even thought it allowed our enemies to communicate better and faster, look at all the innovation and commerce it has brought.
Do we have the right regulations in place for you to do your jobs?
Do we have the right people in place making these decisions?

Treasury -

The internet analogy is an apt one.
Having more types of payment processors compete in the marketplace is a very good thing.
We don't want to classify it as this or that, only stop people from money laundering.
The existing regulations are sufficient.
There are many great innovations to come that we don't want to kill.

DHS -

You are correct in comparing this to the internet.
Our task force between all these agencies has done a good job of taking down Liberty Reserve and Silk Road.
There are many legitimate uses of cryptocurrency.
The existing regulations are sufficient, but we'll let you know if that changes.
We could use additional experts.

Secret Service -

Cybercurrency is used for crime.
We've arrested lots of cybercriminals.
(Begrudgingly) Yes, there might be a legitimate use for something like bitcoin.
We could use additional experts.
Am I too optimist or that sound awesome?

The market sure seems to think so. Bitcoin has gone from <550 to >700 just today!
550  Economy / Securities / Re: [MCXNOW IPO] : 11,000 BTC raised [ UPDATE : OVER! ] on: November 06, 2013, 05:36:33 PM
what country are the founders from and/or servers located. I would be careful with gambling. Why not just run an exchange and focus on the uniqueness of micro-payments to the balance-holders and shareholders? That's sounds good enough to me. The domain registrar is Panama. That is a red flag. New BTC outfits are about trust above all else. Who can trust this?
551  Economy / Securities / Re: [MCXNOW IPO] : 11,000 BTC raised [ UPDATE : OVER! ] on: November 06, 2013, 05:06:44 PM
Mega buyer remorse with MCX now at HALF PRICE.

lame.
552  Economy / Economics / Re: What is really backing the price? on: November 06, 2013, 05:04:52 PM
The May 2011 bubble went from 2 to 31 back to 2. Then there was 1.5 years of relative price stablility in the the 5-15 range that ended in Jan 2013 printing a value of 13.50. The next bubble was from there to 266 briefly. The resulting crash saw a low of 65 on July 1 and then relative price stability between 100-150 for awhile. Now BTC has printed an ATH at 272.52 just last night and if you think this is a bubble I would disagree, barring a catastrohpic failure or the like the next bubble will be in the 500 range with subsequent price stability around 300 for a few months.
553  Economy / Securities / Re: [MCXNOW IPO] : 11,000 BTC raised [ UPDATE : 9 HOURS LEFT ! ] on: November 05, 2013, 05:53:35 PM
so what are the "company" founders going to do with $1.2M they raised?
554  Economy / Economics / Re: What is really backing the price? on: November 05, 2013, 05:36:51 PM
BTC is backed up by the only thing that ever backs up a price:

demand.
555  Economy / Economics / Re: Yet another price prediction (This time for 1/1/14) on: November 05, 2013, 05:34:45 PM
if BTC levels off here for a bit -- barring any catastrophic hack or the like of course -- it'll be over $300 USD on 1/1/14

Chinese buying is the driver, but there is demand everywhere right now. I just sold 2 coins for $450 cash-on-the-barrel-head this past weekend. No hesitation (obviously such a small data point is not meant to represent why I think it'll go to 300 - just an anecdotal example of adoption). Things are catching on and getting hot. Just sayin'...
556  Economy / Economics / Re: There is a need for a Bitcoin Bank on: November 05, 2013, 05:25:42 PM
Bitcoin presents ways for users to be WAY more clever and market responsive than archaic and scoleric traditional banks will ever adapt in to. Just look at mcxnow, etc ... Just one more reason why btc will replace banking anyways; just look how banks fail more than half of humanity as being completely useless !!!!! :

I added BTC/LTC to linkedin as a hobby/interest
558  Economy / Economics / Re: 100 is the new 2 on: April 13, 2013, 06:55:11 PM
ha! market predictions don't need reason, because there is no such thing. "Reason" is bunch of crap the professional agencies conjure up to sound like they know what they are talking about (e.g., AAPL is still a buy at 700).

1) You don't know if I own bitcoins or not, that was an assumption. Therefore, you are making a prediction of your own.
2) I am a technical analysis trader and I know support when I see it.
559  Economy / Economics / Re: IRS to come after people for selling Bitcoins on: April 13, 2013, 06:32:15 PM
the IRS goes after unreported income. That will always be true whether gold coins or bitcoins.
560  Economy / Economics / 100 is the new 2 on: April 13, 2013, 06:31:31 PM
After the May11 crash (33 to 2), I think the new floor is 80-100. Next plow forward will be 500-600.
