5621  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for someone to create/modify software for this forum [1100+ BTC] on: January 15, 2012, 02:15:55 AM
As it has become, I am to desperate to give a shit what I do for what price, sooooooo .. name your desired range and we'll go from there ... I'll do this with a PHP/Postgresql back-end within you budget, it will take about 3-5 months .. ish.

If not .. so be it.

This bid does not exactly fill me with confidence in your abilities... What's your plan for creating a good product?
5622  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for someone to create/modify software for this forum [1100+ BTC] on: January 14, 2012, 01:33:26 AM
If you think that's going to be too much (and many people would), can you let me know so I don't waste time drawing up a spec for no reason?

The forum has ~1100 BTC now (all available for this project) and will probably have a few hundred more by March. At the current market rate this would be over $8000, though I can't guarantee that the bitcoin price won't go down a lot by then.

Starting in March would be fine, but I want to make a decision about who the bidder will be by the end of January. (If there are no great bidders, I will probably abandon this bidding process, start an open source software project, write the forum core myself, and place bounties on all other required software aspects.)
5623  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 17 on: January 14, 2012, 12:49:00 AM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here. (One of the remaining slots has random factoids, and one links to the current ad auction.)

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats: On the 20th of November, 2011, there were about 120,000 views of topics. So one slot would have appeared around 12,000 times per day. The ad doesn't appear on topic pages with only one post, though, and it only appears for people using the default theme. Total views per day on more recent days (in January):
- 1st: 99683
- 2nd: 117879
- 3rd: 106534
- 4th: 121305
- 5th: 146498
- 6th: 142415
- 7th: 109045
- 8th: 115249
- 9th: 118833
- 10th: 118167
- 11th: 116874

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you bid, all of your previous bids are automatically canceled.
- All bid prices must be divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 04:00:00 on January 20, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slot may be sold to someone else.
5624  Economy / Services / Re: Forum ad auction on #bitcoin-auction -- Dec 12/13 on: January 13, 2012, 11:01:15 PM
Auction starts in about one hour.
5625  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin BIP 16 /P2SH/ is bad, your action is needed! on: January 13, 2012, 10:44:41 PM
Certainly, twice. gmaxwell's post was well put together; I was hoping to get another perspective on it. He mentions 2 main needs: The 1st (needing receiver controlled disposition of funds) is something I don't the understand the purpose/intent of. Perhaps someone could explain why this is needed.

As jimrandomh mentioned, M-of-N would allow for some important features. The protocol already supports this kind of transaction (so you could theoretically do two-factor authentication now), but there are major drawbacks. In order to do two-factor authentication with the current system, you would need to do one of these things:
- Have everyone sending you BTC use a recent Bitcoin client version and potentially pay higher fees for sending you BTC. Also, your Bitcoin addresses may be double the normal size or larger.
- Every time you receive BTC, the client will automatically need to send the received BTC back to yourself in a new transaction. Received transactions will temporarily not be protected by your two-factor authentication scheme, and you'll pay tons of extra fees.

OP_EVAL, P2SH, and CHC are some proposals for changing the protocol in a backward-compatible way so that these drawbacks are eliminated for two-factor authentication and many other possible future features that require "fancy transactions" (escrow, password-based authentication, etc.). OP_EVAL is broken and will probably not be used. P2SH is probably OK, but the specific way it is implemented is hack-like and inelegant. I like CHC.
5626  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin BIP 16 /P2SH/ is bad, your action is needed! on: January 13, 2012, 09:53:53 PM
Exactly what protocol problem is this trying to solve? Is something broken that needs fixing? Or are we talking about 'fixing' something that isn't broken?

Did you read gmaxwell's long post above?
5627  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin BIP 16 /P2SH/ is bad, your action is needed! on: January 13, 2012, 09:22:50 PM
In the current script system every operation has a purpose and scripts executes in a methodical order. When P2SH is introduced scripts can no longer be executed simply by interpreting the instructions. P2SH undermines the scripting language because it requires that if the interpreter spots a specific template do something else rather than execute the script.

I agree. P2SH would probably work OK, but it's not consistent with the rest of Script, so I would prefer that it not be used.

(I voted for both P2SH and CODEHASHCHECK in the poll, since I think they're both acceptable solutions.)
5628  Economy / Services / Re: Forum ad auction on #bitcoin-auction -- Dec 12/13 on: January 12, 2012, 11:57:31 PM
The auction will be on Jan. 14 at 12:00 AM UTC (tomorrow). Countdown.

There will be four auction rounds. The first round will be for 3 slots. The second round will be for 2 slots. The remaining two rounds will each be for one slot. Minimum increment is 0.02 BTC. A bid wins if it is not outbid after one minute.

Style will be allowed next week.
5629  Other / Meta / Re: Forum user API, please. This cannot wait for the "new software". on: January 12, 2012, 11:20:48 PM
I agree that an API would be useful and desirable. I'm just not willing to spend any of my personal time on it when the code I write will be obsolete in a few months.
5630  Other / Meta / Re: Delete my account on: January 12, 2012, 07:52:36 PM
(1) Assume that a well-respected member (again, let the example be ckolivas) decides to remove his account.

Then he must be prepared to deal with the consequences of that decision. It's not the board's problem.
5631  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Its like killing rats in Everquest on: January 12, 2012, 07:28:42 AM
I guess this confused me:

If you have ~4 hours of online time and your existing posts are good, then you will be whitelisted on request

I was talking about posters with less than 5 posts.
5632  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for someone to create/modify software for this forum [1100+ BTC] on: January 11, 2012, 09:46:48 PM
My BID is 500BTC

Quote from: theymos
Bids should include at least this info:
- A description of the general architecture you plan
- A list of any of the optional features I mentioned that your software will have
- Additional features your software will have that I didn't mention
- Samples of your past code
- A price. If you want links or other "perks", include these as part of the price.
5633  Other / Meta / Re: Is selling drugs that are illegal in the US to US customers against forum rules? on: January 10, 2012, 03:12:53 AM
It's hosted by MtGox, which is based in Japan. The actual server location doesn't really matter.
5634  Other / Meta / Re: Is selling drugs that are illegal in the US to US customers against forum rules? on: January 10, 2012, 01:24:17 AM
It's against the rules to make trades that are not legal in both the seller's and buyer's countries. I'm not interested in figuring out legality of trades or investigating locations of members, though, so I only delete really obvious stuff.

Is this forum hosted/managed by people in the US?  I assumed it was, if not maybe this isn't as much of a problem.

It's in Japan.
5635  Other / Meta / Re: General statistics for this member? on: January 09, 2012, 03:18:16 AM
The percentages are calculated by your posts in that board divided by the total posts in that board. Theymos's most active French subforum is likely due to the low volume of that subforum. In other words, the measurement is of your importance in that particular subboard.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. Thanks!
5636  Other / Meta / Re: Concerns about Diablo and censorship on: January 09, 2012, 03:10:31 AM
My issue has only been about censorship and trying to find out the forums policy on it.

I strive to allow as much freedom as possible. It should be possible to express any idea as long as the idea will not get the forum in trouble and you express the idea using proper categorization, etc.

Habitual trolls are not welcome because they disrupt real discussion. Here are the recommendations (not policy) that I wrote for mods regarding trolls:

Trolls should be banned because they disrupt serious discussion. Identifying trolls is often difficult, however. I like to think in terms of "troll score": the higher the troll score, the more likely it is that a person is a troll. Examples of things that affect troll score:
- Having crazy positions (racism, etc.): large increase
- Posting long, well-reasoned posts: large decrease
- High posts-to-time-online ratio: small increase
- Been around for a long time: moderate decrease
- Posting many images: mild increase
- Much discussion of illegal sites: very mild increase
- Requires more moderation than is typical: moderate increase
- Using vulgarity, insults, or memes excessively: mild increase
- Posting topics with undescriptive titles: mild increase
- Seems disdainful of the Bitcoin community in general: mild increase
- Bumping old posts a lot: mild increase
- Giving people bad advice: mild increase
- Poor spelling/grammar: slight increase
- Criticizing moderation: moderate increase
- Complaining about anything: small increase
- Uses ad hominem attacks with unusual frequency: moderate increase
- Lying: moderate increase
- Inconsistent positions: moderate increase
- Posting the same arguments over and over again without bothering to respond to arguments against them: moderate increase
- Posting topics that will obviously evoke emotional responses: slight increase
- Posting replies that are themselves on-topic but which will obviously tend to bring the discussion off-topic: moderate increase
- Bumping old threads with replies that are not really worthwhile: moderate increase

None of these things alone warrant a warning, but when they occur habitually or when someone does many of them, they indicate that the poster is a troll.

Warn people who are doing many trollish things. Tell me if that doesn't help.
5637  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for someone to create/modify software for this forum [1100+ BTC] on: January 09, 2012, 02:59:31 AM
Oh, what kind of budget are you currently looking at for this ? just curious as you probably have many bids already.

There's ~1100 BTC available right now.
5638  Other / Meta / Re: Concerns about Diablo and censorship on: January 08, 2012, 11:13:39 PM
Yeah play this stupid game eh? Your the one in the position to know the dirty dealing going on here and unlike you people I am not for censorship in any form. And this response here tells me you are fully in support of their actions if not in on it yourself this is why they get to continue on. You hypocrites should remember this next time someone does it to btc/this forum like it has happened when they decided to DDOS you and you start with your crocodile tears of but why us, we the only ones allowed to do it to anyone we want, but not have it one to us. The bitcoin project of freedom and openness yeah right sell that crock of shit to someone who is buying and that is not me...

I'm aware of the Eligius controversy, but I haven't seen DiabloD3 do anything wrong in the matter. I don't read the mining section. If he did do something wrong, then someone needs to tell me exactly what he did so I can investigate it. I'm not going to do anything in response to vague complaints of "dirty dealing".

Even if we say that Luke scammed all Eligius pool members by attacking alt chains (which I would disagree with), then he would still not be banned because scammers are not banned from this forum.
5639  Other / Meta / Re: SMF New Version (1.1.16) is out. on: January 08, 2012, 11:04:42 PM
Updated. Thanks.
5640  Other / Meta / Re: Concerns about Diablo and censorship on: January 08, 2012, 06:01:00 PM
What posts has DiabloD3 deleted that should not have been deleted? What posts of Luke-Jr's have not been deleted that should have been deleted?
