5641  Other / Meta / Re: How do you check plagiarism? on: April 16, 2022, 09:14:47 AM
I'm saying that not every user is afforded the opportunity to prove plagiarism charges. If it were a thesis paper or a journal article, such work would be flagged because no one has time to listen to excuses.
The admins don't ban people here unless there is sufficient evidence that shows that plagiarism was committed. Those who get banned can appeal, and if they can prove they are the original content creators the ban will be lifted. I remember at least one such case, but there is no way I can find a link to that particular thread now. The rules here aren't as strict as in academic circles and they shouldn't be. But again, I agree with you that there shouldn't be a reason to withhold links to the original discussions even if it's yours.
5642  Other / Meta / Re: Help end this phase for Nigerians @Theymos on: April 16, 2022, 08:37:45 AM
Another benefit i noticed as regards Nigerians having their local board was when i discover the large numbers of Africa football fans at the gambling sections who on a daily basis engage on football discussion and this thread was created by cryptopreneurbrainboss.
I hope you get your own local board because you really want it. But please don't use posts made in gambling boards as a reason why that should happen. I am not familiar with the post quality in that particular thread that you linked to, but many other discussions in the gambling boards have the same problem. The people posting there have no idea what they are talking about. They don't know much about sports, they probably don't watch it either, and they don't gamble. Check out the amount of spam that is generated every weekend when most of the football action takes place. There are hundreds of posts about half-time and full-time results, who scored the goals, and in what minute. You will rarely see someone make a comment about a particular situation that happened in the match where you would see that the person actually watched it and decided to share his thoughts.
5643  Other / Meta / Re: How do you check plagiarism? on: April 16, 2022, 08:15:16 AM
Yes, we had the same problem in the past, and the user was banned for republishing his own claimed articles on Bitcointalk without citation; he attempted to prove it later, but it was too late. It's a stupid thing to do, passing off your original work to deceive people is wrong and punishable.
Wait, RainbowKun isn't banned, is he? Not according to BPIP he isn't. He is also wearing a signature, so he can't be banned. Signatures get deleted for banned users.

I don't remember what exactly happened, but I think he was accused of plagiarizing and meriting his own alts by forum members. I think by Ratimov. He didn't' run into a problem with the forum mods and the Bitcointalk rules. In that case, you can't use that as an example of self-plagiarism. To prevent even the slightest possibility of problems in the future, just add the source link.
5644  Other / Meta / Re: A suggestion for the forum search and Ninjastic.space on: April 16, 2022, 08:00:19 AM
But, what if you start another search and what you are looking for is in the search results you initially prevent from reappearing?
There should obviously be an option to cancel all custom modifications and go back to the regular setup. The changes you make wouldn't be permanent. They can be specific to that search only, and once you close the tab, it all goes away. Another great thing would be having an option to save those particular filters so that if you want to use the same custom options, you could just load it back up.

I think you have a better chance if you post this in Ninjastic.space's topic.
I will just tag @TryNinja in this post and hopefully he will see it when he gets around to it. if not, I will post in his thread.

Without knowing anything about how it really works, I can imagine a "hide topic" or "hide board" tickbox may not be too much work to implement.
Yeah, I suppose that shouldn't be too difficult for TryNinja to add.

So this poor and confused soul made a thread on a Bitcoin forum to seek advice about how to shutdown (whatever that means) cryptocurrencies globally. Did he try CTRL+ALT+DEL? That should do it. He believes that crypto is causing too much suffering because of the losses in value. Interesting since Bitcoin is an excellent investment long-term. But let's say he is right and Bitcoin keeps losing value. His solution to this problem is a global shutdown/ban of everything crypto, ultimately causing complete loss of all investments. What a strategy.

I just came up with a cure for testicular cancer after reading the posts of this inspiring individual. We shoot all men aged 30+ before they start showing symptoms of cancer. Testicular cancer rates drop significantly, and the world is cured of this horrible disease. Men wouldn't' mind because who wants to have cancer, right? It's brilliant.

if you are thinking that it would be unfair for people right now to pay that much BTC, then you have to realize that it would be unfair to the people who already paid 50BTC in order to get the Donator/VIP title.
No, not really. Those were different times. Bitcoin didn't have the value it has today. Don't forget that we have faucets that gave out 5 BTC per claim at one point in the past. Do we have those now? No, because no sane person would give away such amounts. Bitcointalk doesn't want donations anymore. I could have said doesn't need, but I think want is more precise. If theymos wanted people to donate, the requirements to become VIP and Donator would have been lowered. But he doesn't want the donations because he doesn't need them.
5647  Other / Meta / A suggestion for the forum search and Ninjastic.space on: April 16, 2022, 07:01:57 AM
I have several compilation threads made up of dozens of different discussions. My Lightning Network compilation, for example, contains enjoyable topics about the LN. To make such a thread or update it, I have to go through hundreds and thousands of search results. Duplicate threads often appear multiple times in the results, making it even more time-consuming.

It would be so great if it was possible to remove certain threads from showing up in the results. For example: Imagine if the results suggest threads A, B, C, D, E, F… But I remember that I have seen threads B, C, and E before, and I don’t need to recheck the content of those topics. I could just click on a button and have them disappear from the total results or highlight them in a different color or some other form. That would drastically reduce the total search results, and I could only focus on the threads I hadn’t seen before.

Does that make sense? Is that something that could be incorporated in the forum search feature or Ninjastic.space?

Let me show you two examples.
The first one is from Ninjastic.space.

I do a search for the term “lightning” from 1 January 2021 until today. Ninjastic.space finds over 6.000 different results. If I click on “Collapsed”, it’s a bit easier to navigate. But I am still seeing the same threads over and over again. It'd make things easier if there was a way for me to remove the “The Lightning Network FAQ” thread and all the other repeated ones that keep popping up.

Now for an example from the forum search option.

I do a search for “lightning”, and among the results, I see the following threads:

Let’s say that I am already familiar with the 3 threads that pop up in the results on the picture, and I would like to prevent them from appearing again. Is that something that could be done?
5648  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Features - Less is More on: April 16, 2022, 06:58:33 AM
Hiding features doesn't make them go away. Hiding possible vulnerabilities doesn't make them go away...
Possible vulnerabilities and bugs can exist in the most basic features of Electrum as well. In theory. When Electrum allowed servers to send out arbitrary messages, it didn't support the Lightning Network. But it still allowed something that shouldn't be there. If you limited your Electrum client to just receiving, sending, and generating addresses, something could be found in the randomness of the seeds, address collisions, and so on.

Electrum is a good Bitcoin wallet with important features. If it gets chopped up into parts and pieces where you will be forced to install or opt in for separate functions, people will just switch to something else.
5649  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: HELP. I need to know if my Electrum address is correct on: April 16, 2022, 06:50:10 AM
No one yet seems planning to use a 90 characters address?
I don't think it's something you can decide to generate just for the purpose of having such a long address and for fun. If you have a standard wallet that generates 42-character addresses, it won't all of a sudden generate a 90-character one. Someone with more technical knowledge will probably chip in and describe what it takes to do that. In my limited understanding, it requires a much more complex script.

You said in one of your first posts in this thread that you would make public all information when the investigation ends. If the investigation has ended, that's what you are supposed to do now. Or were you just joking when you said that? You can't just say things and expect people to believe you just because you said it. That's not how it works. You need to back it up with evidence. You are the only party that can end this once and for all by making your findings public.

You can't make private information public? Says who? Is Wazdan pressuring you not to do it? Is the player who accuses you of scamming doing it? You said you would, so what has changed?

I believe I asked you several times to show proof that Wazdan has not sent you the information you have requested. Why haven't you done it? Where is the email about your requests to Wazdan and the one that proves they haven't delivered what was asked? There is no non-disclosure agreement between you two. You believe Wazdan is colluding with the player to cheat on your casino? Excellent! Even more reasons to show proof that they haven't sent you anything of value to help with the investigation. Who are you protecting by not releaseing it? You are not making any friends here and you are making life difficult for yourself.

You want to share the data with an admin? Tell you what I am going to do. I will tag Cyrus and hilariousandco in this post. They are mods of the marketplace section and might be interested to have a look. I will also mention the name DarkStar_ as he knows his way around gambling, and LoyceV as a trusted neutral party. I doubt anyone will object to these names or distrusts the mentioned users. I am also going to send them a PM asking if they want to take a look at this thread and maybe the provided evidence by you.
5651  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Keeping coins on Wallets on: April 15, 2022, 09:05:21 AM
Actually they tested 4.1.5 which can be seen in "The Analysis" section and this was happening due to a bug in the build process which ignored the packages I think.
You are right, I didn't pay attention to that. If you click on the older reviews where it says "(show 2 of 4 reproducible)", you can see that they tested version 4.1.5.0 two times. The first time was on 19 July 2021 when it was tagged as reproducible from source. The second test was on 21 January 2022 when Electrum was given the verdict non-reproducible.

The info on the site says that the last analysis was today. I wonder why they haven't tested the latest version.
5652  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: HELP. I need to know if my Electrum address is correct on: April 15, 2022, 08:17:04 AM
Just adding this if it's the format and number of characters is your problem I would like you to read this wiki page below and segwit address has 42 characters and 62 characters in a Taproot address.
Native Segwit addresses can actually contain up to 90 characters, but I don't think I have ever seen such an address in the wild. Those long ones probably use more complex scripts, which affects the addresses' length.
5653  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Features - Less is More on: April 15, 2022, 07:54:51 AM
Electrum can be used as a hot/cold and watch only wallet, so I don't see any problems there. It is my number one BTC (SPV) wallet.
If you are a hodler like you said in your first post, but you saw the arbitrary messages that malicious server operators posted in the past, you are using Electrum as a hot wallet and that's not the recommended way. The positive thing is that you didn't fall victim to the phishing messages. If you used Electrum as a cold wallet, you wouldn't have to worry about server messages, LN, invoices, etc. You can't drown if there is no water and if you are in a desert.  Wink

...although I still think unused features should be removed entirely (maybe available as downloadable extra modules).
Sorry, I don't see it. If you don't want to use some of the features, don't do it. It really is that easy.

Electrum wasn't developed to fit just one type of person. I have never used an Invoice on Electrum. But I have also never clicked on it by mistake or just for the fun of it. I have never used the console tab either (can be switched on/off from the settings), but I have never accidently opened it when trying to generate an address. Just use the stuff you need and forget about those you don't.
5654  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: problems to restore old Wallet on: April 15, 2022, 07:28:44 AM
If I enter the mode only to consult the wallet, the access works, but there it also does not open the option to insert the seed
This makes no sense. Can you try to explain it properly please?

Let's start from the beginning.
How many words does your seed have?
What wallet did you use when you generated the seed? Electrum or a different type of wallet?
Are you 100% sure you have written down the words properly? Could their be typos due to bad handwriting?

In what format are the words written down? Have you clearly market them as word1, 2, 3, 4, etc., or is it just a list of words in different rows/columns?

That's a good thing. When you interacted with their customer service department, I assume they asked for screenshots or videos as proof that the hardware wallet is faulty. Did they?

How long did it take them to reply to your first email?
Did you have to provide them with your order number while describing your problem?
Don't they have a live chat feature now? You still received an email, but I thought their service personnel communicate via the chat now.
5656  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Keeping coins on Wallets on: April 15, 2022, 07:00:56 AM
I didn't verify it myself to confirm it but according to Electrum's release notes: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/RELEASE-NOTES, they started supporting and releasing reproducible builds for Android too, and this since version 4.1.3
Apparently not according to updated data on Wallet Scrutiny. The last version they tested was 4.2.1 (the app was analyzed today) and it's still showing that the binary is non-reproducible from the provided source code.
5657  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor mailing list breached on: April 14, 2022, 05:38:50 PM
Below you will find specific data belonging to you which was stolen in the attack.
Data stolen in the attack

- Your email
- Your IP address
This is the data that was stolen from you specifically. Different people probably received different notifications about the data that was stolen from them. The email mentions that in some cases even names were leaked and other data. This "other data" is the worrying part. That could also mean addresses or phone numbers.

Trezor stated they won't be using MailChimp any longer. However, not much will change. Read this:

We will begin migrating to a new mailing platform once we have thoroughly assessed other options for compliance and data security.

...but I fail to see how a 2-of-3 multi-sig reliant on Block's servers and requiring some form of account, identification, passwords, etc., is "more complex" than just writing down 12 words on a piece of paper.
Because most people have gotten used to others fixing and doing things for them that they don't want it to change. There is an issue with your credit card, call your bank, they'll fix it. The car won't start, call your auto insurer. The AC isn't cooling like it did last year - don't try to clean it, but call the service personnel. People know what accounts and passwords are. They are familiar with PINs. God forbid we learn new things. Seeds, phrases, private and public keys, and derivation paths... what da hell are those?

Regular people: Can't I just register an account without all that other stuff?
Block: Sure you can, We've got just the thing for you.

Although I will concede that the prototypes look sexy as hell: https://nitter.net/JesseDorogusker/status/1511714178326695939

I will never recommend anyone to buy their hardware wallet.
Stop calling it a hardware wallet. The official term is "device". Shocked
5659  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Keeping coins on Wallets on: April 14, 2022, 04:50:09 PM
What about Mycelium?
It depends on the phone you have.
If you are using iPhone, than Mycelium in non-verifiable just like the mobile version of Electrum.
If you have an Android phone, the app is reproducible from source.

Bisq is decentralized exchange, not a wallet, so you can't really compare it with Electrum or Mycelium wallet.
True, but it allows you to generate a new seed just like a non-custodial wallet. You need to write down that seed otherwise you lose access to your coins because there are no accounts like on centralized exchanges. Maybe OP heard about that somewhere and mistakenly confused Bisq with a wallet. Even though it's a non-custodial and decentralized exchange where you are always in control of your coins, it's better to use a proper wallet and use an exchange... for exchanging.
5660  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Square is considering making a hardware wallet for Bitcoin on: April 14, 2022, 09:25:26 AM
Looks like they posted an update a few weeks ago which we missed: https://wallet.build/how-the-wallet-works/

Doesn't really say much that we didn't already know. Mainly just expands on how the 2-of-3 multi-sig set up works. Of interest, they have stopped using them term "hardware wallet" though, and instead refer to it as a "hardware device". They still make no mention of seed phrases, though, so it's still not clear if you can actually back up your wallet properly.
Their intention is to build a device for complete newbies to crypto who don't want to or can't focus on protecting their own data. That includes writing down and storing a set of 24 words. It's supposed to make it easy to use. We know that easy doesn't mean safe, but we are not the target audience. I doubt there will be a seed for the end-user. Maybe they can opt in to get one during the setup process. if not, it will be an account-based app where all operations are confirmed with a PIN, password, fingerprint, and similar.
