That's a credit card you need for that stuff. I'd be utterly amazed if Coinbase ever issue one of those. It'll only ever be debit cards. Can't speak to the car rental for everyplace (I use a card that covers insurance) [dollar takes them see below] but for hotels the BitPay card works fine. It also works fine for airline tickets. I did DefCon a few years ago with nothing but BTC except for the rental car. Hotel -> hotels.com giftcard purchased with BTC through egifter Hotel -> Card to cover charges bitpay Flight -> Delta Gift Card through I don't remember where Cash in LV -> 1 face to face trade and 1 ATM The next year I actually had put a fuckton of cash on the BitPay card for a deal that went bad so I paid for the hotel with it since it was sitting there anyway. There is easy to use software for that: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5214021.0Download and follow the instructions. So long as you can install the software you can do it. It might take a while depending on the speed of your setup but it does work well and you can ask in that thread for help. -Dave |

being open source is about being transparent not about every single user checking the code themselves. for example i have not really checked Electrum or bitcoin core source code (not extensively anyways) but i know that many others have and that is enough. but if it were a closed source wallet i know that nobody has ever seen the code or knows what it is doing. Yes but as I posted someplace else, it's somewhat a false security. Do you check the hash of the file you downloaded against what is posted? Do you have automatic updates turned off on your phone and not update till people have verified the posted code is the same as what is in the app store / play store? And as I posted in another thread unless there has been a 3rd party audit of how they push the update to the store this is all just security theater. Think about it, if there are poor controls to upload the compiled file to the store then it's all pointless. DaveF gets a job with bigwallet as their IT hardware person. It's open source, it's audited, it's amazing beautiful code. Friday @ 4:30PM as everyone is leaving for the weekend I post a corrupt fund stealing compiled app to the app / play store and walk out of the building, head to the airport and fly to some island with no extradition. Saturday AM they have the bad wallet pulled but by then I have 1000s (10000s?) of BTC that were sent to me before anyone knew what happened. And I'm on a beach sipping drinks out of a coconut. On the other hand the shitty closed source wallet needs 2 people with security dongles to log into the PC that updates the code that is in the app / play store. You might not know what the code is, and it may be crap with bugs, but they at least know that what they wrote is what is up there. However, since as far as I know NONE of them publish / publicly audit how they push updates to the stores it's all just trust. You may feel differently. You may disagree. That is fine, but IMO it really needs to be discussed. -Dave |

Nice, glad to see you've got it running. I'm having a tough time understanding this on a Rpi4 I've flashed the image to the SD card and plugged in the HD. I'm stuck at the next set of instructions: As far as I'm aware, myNode does not have an ip address yet as it's never been connected to the internet. Does this require a LAN cable connection? Or can I edit some file to connect to my wifi? All I have is a blue screen with 'no signal' from the device. Appreciate helping me understand. What philipma1957 said. Use a cable not Wi-Fi There is 1 driver that would have to come with it to use the wired nic since all of of them are the same. There are many more Wi-Fi drivers that would need to be setup if you wanted it to work out of the box. Not to mention you would need a way to set the SSID and any credentials. The VM I downloaded yesterday is still syncing. I'm @ block 501514 after about 24 hours. This is on my laptop just doing a normal sync with nothing configured. Wanted to do a clean test. -Dave |

We have to get services to accept bitcoin directly. I mean, if we're willing to give our identity away (KYC) and pay high fees (comparing debit cards to crypto), then why use bitcoin in the first place? Personally, I don't see this helping bitcoin in any way.
I agree--there's no anonymity and I don't think there's any advantage to this service that Visa is offering. It's basically just a way for Visa (and probably Coinbase as well) to extract fees from their customers. Same old story that's been going on since the beginning of credit cards, right? Nice to see bitcoin gaining wider adoption--or possibly doing so--but I'm not sure this is going to catch on. And I also agree that it would be so much better if merchants took bitcoin directly, but there's an obvious volatility risk involved, and I can understand why they wouldn't want to do that. Even payment processors only convert bitcoin to fiat, which is what the merchant receives. If I'm not mistaken, there are a few businesses that take crypto directly. Overstock, Veldt Gold, and Protonmail are three of those, though I'm not sure if any of them still receive crypto directly. Because at times KYC does not matter and having a hold over a merchant is good. Using a CC a times with an online vendor you do not 100% trust is not a bad thing. If you are ordering something they know where you live anyway. Most of the time yeah, paying with BTC is better. Sometimes other ways are better. Also a CC is useful for other things. A quick note about MutliSig addresses pool support
MutliSig addresses starting with 3 are properly supported.
Addresses beginning with “M” are not supported
So as a rule of thumb the best option is to use L-addresses - Legacy Litecoin accounts for user name.

There are no multi-alt-coin open source wallets for mobile.
Since this is in the bitcoin wallet section not the alt-coin wallet section, there are going to be different views.
Which comes back to the thought of if you are going to have a BTC wallet on your phone and 6 or 7 of the big alts on your phone which is better?

A couple days ago I came across myNode which seems to be a working open source solution to running a full node on RPi4 along with many other apps including lighting node/wallet and BTC explorer apps. I'll be dropping the idea of compiling a node on raspian and looking forward to getting this up and running. Looks interesting. I am downloading the VM image now. If it looks nice I'll put together another RPi setup with an SSD to see how it goes. -Dave |

There is a new firmware out as of 20-Feb Something they have at the bottom but should be listed 1st: IMPORTANT: This release is NOT COMPATIBLE with Mk1 hardware. It will brick Mk1 Coldcards. A few other updates and additions: HSM (Hardware Security Module) mode: give Coldcard spending rules, including whitelisted addresses, velocity limits, subsets of authorizing users ... and Coldcard can sign with no human present. Requires companion software to setup (ckbunker or ckcc-protocol), and disabled by default, with multi-step on-screen confirmation required to enable. Mk3 only.
Enhancement: New "user management" menu. Advanced > User Management shows a menu with usernames, some details and a 'delete user' command. USB commands must be used to create user accounts and they are only used to authenticate txn approvals in HSM mode. Dropping support for the 1st gen and adding a feature that only works on the 3rd gen is not cool IMO, but I understand that hardware evolves and sometimes has to be replaced. On the vert very slight chance there is a security issue in the 1st gens that comes out it's going to be interesting to see their reaction. Will they fix it or will they just say get a new one? -Dave |

Bit of a delayed update:
1) Programmer is re-doing most of the back end work on making the button work and some other changes. As he put it "I'm sure there is a worse way of doing what they did in the way that they did it, I'm just not sure how" No real ETA on it as it's being done during his free time which is why this update was so long in coming.
2) Printer settings are tweaked. Seems to be 100% now.
3) I have the wallet generating working faster thanks to the advice of Dabs.
4) Once it's finished he will post all the work to his public git but, since there are a lot of notes and comments in the code now that are not for public consumption it's going to be a while before that happens.

I tried Zeus but for some reason it's not connecting to my node. I also tried connecting with Orbot active but that didn't make a difference.
No idea, I would think that it would be some connectivity issue to your node then since nothing is connecting to it. I have no clue what to check :-( If nobody can help you here, you might want to post on github to see if anyone can help there. -Dave |

Could the confirmations be fee based?
If you set a low fee do they wait for 6, but if you use a medium or high fee they just take the risk?
Same with do you have RBF set on your wallet when sending?
