600watt, you've just created a future classic citation!

edit: what i meant is that there isn´t enough paper money "backing" the money in account.  Smiley

Ich bin sicher, dass der Kurs bald auf 180 (gox) zurückgehen wird.

ich wette 0.5 btc dagegen. bis zum 27. (12 uhr bei uns) wird der kurs (gox) nicht auf 180 zurückgehen.  Cheesy
5844  Economy / Speculation / Re: Hardly any 'bubble' talk this time on: October 23, 2013, 09:02:13 AM
we are in the midst of the mother of all bubbles:

the almighty fiat bubble.

in past centuries, when banknotes were invented, people were always wondering if that paper was backed by enough gold. we don´t have this problem currently. our problem is that there isn't even enough paper to print all the money in account.  Roll Eyes

5845  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: announcement: the international "when-bitcoin-reaches 1000,- $ party" on: October 22, 2013, 10:30:38 PM
Can we set up a separate thread discussing location and get an official email chain or skype group going on this? The party needs to be BIG and extravagant... I totally agree with the Charity component. From what I can tell from this forum alone we could sell a 1,000 tickets.
Or set up a Facebook event, also creates some extra Bitcoin exposure this way. Without boring your friends by spamming them with articles in their newsfeed which they never gonna read anyway.

i will come up with suggestions about planning soonTM    Wink
there will be a website and seperate threads and email and everything. this monster little baby needs dedication.
5846  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: announcement: the international "when-bitcoin-reaches 1000,- $ party" on: October 22, 2013, 10:19:08 PM
Don't mean to tamp down on the enthusiasm but it may be extremely early to get into this planning. I suspect that bitcoin will have at least one or two bubbles (current rise included) before we reach $1,000, with each drop feeling like a lot of sad disappointment. Plus if we get all hyped up for this right now, we may be a bit tired of this when it actually happens a year or two from now. 6 months is an EXTREMELY long time in bitcoin time (6 months ago we were just hitting the Cyprus peak). Imagine what it will be like in a year. People will be going, "Oh... that party thing is still being planned? That idea felt like it formed YEARS ago...  Tongue"

i think we should give it at least until end of 2015 if not 2016. if it hasn´t happened by then, coins will be send back. the upfront costs would need to be kept very limited - maybe just no spending of budget until btc crosses 500 $.
you are right, the path up there will be rocky and with akward times like this years early summer. patience will be needed from time to time. imagine there would have been a "btc hits 200 $" party. when would that have taken place ? not even now...

"coins will be send [sic] back"?

Why would anyone send you coins?

sry for miss-spelling. my english surely needs improvement. for tickets, to cover costs.

maybe I missed it, but is there any more specific constraints on the $1000 value?

I mean, maybe the condition should be: it has held > $1000 for a month or something like that.

Or perhaps using some other way of calculating stability that I don't know about.

It would be a bit sad if a party was held just due to another freak bubble, which then popped and by the time we all got to Frankfurt it was < $1000 again. Shocked

or is the pure symbolism of simply touching $1000 enough?!

This is why I suggested waiting until the first time it hits $1000/BTC to begin seriously planning. Discussing generalities is fine but specifics should wait, otherwise there's sure to be some disappointment.

this strategy would have worked kind of well if we had a "btc-hit 200" party i assume. for this premiere i think it is better to get prepared at least a little bit sooner. the party is anyway linked to the chart performance. if btc rallies, there will be lots of traffic here in this thread, if it goes down or gets stucked, it will get kinda boring here. the party is the chart and vice versa.

When I hear the talking heads talk about bitcoin, all I hear is this from Newsweek 1995:

The Internet? Bah!
Hype alert: Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana

After two decades online, I’m perplexed. It’s not that I haven’t had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I’ve met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I’m uneasy about this most trendy and (...)

Rpietila:  This is one of the most interesting posts ever.  It is still hard to believe that there are so few in the top tiers though.  I figured there were thousands of people with 1000+ coins.  (I would not be in that category unfortunately).  Wish I was a better day trader and perhaps I could be but I totally fail at it!  If you could start a thread on this it would be great!

No need to clutter this one any more Smiley

Analysis on bitcoin wealth distribution by the size of holding.

lol, i have overlooked that. thank you for bolding it out for me. my bad, sry  Wink

. Nobody is questioning the viability of having a 1000-people party with $1 Million budget!! I mean, wtf, a few months ago I did not even dream of this and still got ridiculed.

I am so much in.

I sprayed my coffee all over my lap LOL'ing, to be honest I still don't know who of you are homeless and who is 13 training on the school library's computer.  Smiley

Hey at a $1000 a bitcoin, even the homeless and 13 year olds will be flying first class to Germany for the party.

+1.

There are only so many bitcoins...

In 2010, you could effortlessly buy BTC10,000. But only 2100 people will be able to hold it.
In 2011-2012, you could buy BTC1,000. But only 21,000 people will be able to.
In 2013, most can buy BTC100. Still, that is only 210,000 people.

There are more than a million bitcoin users now, so obviously most hold less than BTC100.

Once the bitcoin userbase grows to one billion, only 21 million at most can hold even a single bitcoin. It does not take a scientist to see that BTC1 is very valuable, and a stash of BTC100 bought in 2013 is immensely valuable.

More statistics of bitcoin ownership. Warning: simple math and advanced logic.

Situation now:

#People#Bitcoins#TotalBitcoins
100BTC10k+5.5M
[...

Total: 11.8M bitcoins, 4.2M owners

Situation later:

#People#Bitcoins#TotalBitcoins
63BTC10k+3M
...

Total: 21M bitcoins, 611M owners

Of course the numbers in ownership brackets can be off by a factor of 2, but it is mathematically impossible for them to be off by a factor of 10! Therefore we conclude that by buying and holding BTC1, you are forever guaranteed to be among the top 1 million bitcoin owners, regardless of how cheap you managed to buy it, or how valuable it gets in the nearest years.

Iirc, it takes $10M+ to get to the top 1 million in dollar wealth, so we are talking about royal money.

There are definitely 13 year olds with BTC100 or more. Since there are about 6,000 people with BTC100. I would be more wary for 17-year olds who were 13 at the time when coins could be mined 500 per day Smiley

Also, are you looking at the numbers for each address though?  I know for security reasons many people hold their coin using different addresses so the numbers could be different taking that into consideration.

i also find this very interesting. for the sake of the readability of this thread i suggest to discuss this in another thread.

welcome on board ffssixtynine, Gordonium, keystroke and EuroTrash !

@ffssixtynine/molecular/edd: charity is a must. i would say that it is a major component of this event. a significant part of ticket fees will be donated, any fundraising ON TOP OF IT would really great. we might as well aim for at least 100 k $. we need to find a common goal where to put the money -suggestions welcome (imho it should go towards unfortunate kids, but we will have votes for it. btw, not only is bitcoin democratizing banking, this btc-1k party will itself be a very democratic happening)

@edd/rassah: most definitly it is our eager goal that the party-project will only accept btc as payment and will only spend bitcoin without exchange also. i think waving around with such an astronomical freakin budget will be an convincing arguement for any service company to take the chance and start to accept btc.

i am really happy with the course our ship has taken. it started out as a crazy idea, but now we have brilliant members here contributing.

5854  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why the sudden price rise? on: October 22, 2013, 12:33:10 PM
To be fair, the ascent of Bitcoin into the mainstream will make a lot of people unnaturally wealthy and ruffle a lot of feathers in the process. Even though those people all took risks on something that was likely to go to zero, people will still be upset since they didn't work hard, etc. It's true, it's unnatural, inhuman in a way to get so wealthy just for identifying a trend that others couldn't see. But the same can be said of early facebook investors, Apple investors, Microsoft investors, etc. People had no idea they'd be big. If everyone knew, they would have been valued highly from the beginning. And Bitcoiners could still lose their entire investment, so are risking a lot. Or if they are risking only a small amount like $50, they won't become wealthy even if we see million-dollar bitcoins, though they could probably buy a nice house if they never sold any along the way (which is extra risky).

this is a topic a thought about myself lately. is it "hard/well deserved" for bitcoiners to get filthy rich? or were they just lucky bastards. i can tell you, this summer wasn´t easy. after i went somewhat "all-in" end of may i sometimes felt like being the idiot (that i actually am...) who invested way to early into a technology that is doomed/will fail/get´s outlawed/etc ...

5858  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will Bitcoin hit $300? on: October 22, 2013, 11:31:50 AM
it will be on november 12th 2013. @stamp.
5859  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why the sudden price rise? on: October 22, 2013, 11:24:47 AM
look at the stock market. go and try to make some serious money by trading against the traders. you will lose most of the time. they have the faster machines, better information, more money etc. same thing will happen with bitcoins. people are working day and night to find a way to steal your money. its just a matter of time.
So day-trading on the stock market now equates to theft?   Huh

I am not angry at all. the hype sickens me. this isnt investing. this is flat out gambling.
Why does the hype sicken you, and why do you care?  Why do you care if people are "gambling" (in your opinion) with their money?

the hype of this(bitcoin) reminds me of the dot com bubble. and it does make me sick. because im tired of all the rich fucks taking advantage of your ordinary hard working people.

Quite frankly - and this is going to sound harsh - the person you should be angry at is the person who taught you that "hard work" is what would help you get ahead and have what you want in life. Its take ALOT more than hard work. It takes working smart, investing smart, and being a part of adding a value to society that is really valuable - not that can be easily replaced. For instance, if you are a coal miner, you can be replaced by 100 other coal miners. You provide no real tangible value.

In fact, many people don't work hard, because they understand money, how to make it, invest it and utilize it.

You picked "hard work" as your mantra, obviously it hasn't given you want you wanted and now your bitter. You should look for answers inside yourself, not by chastising people excited about bitcoin.

if you run into someone rich and he tells you it was all hard work, just ask him "who´s hard work?"
