went to -2540 blocks, 2543 orphaned blocks, 17803 unconfirmed transactions, within half an hour after redownloading block chain

2      7115225331220974788      609 %

Not sure if this is relevant, but the My transactions window ends up with duplicate transactions listed some old transactions from last week are duplicated. I was having a lot of problems sending, i think due to system clock and 15 seconds issue.

Hmm... other than the duplicates in My Transactions, it seems that it is still moving forward:

This seems to be an issue with NRS display? Just a bit worrisome about negative recent blocks, so many orphans and unconfirmed. Is this normal?

What web.xml options add most to stability of NXT server? The stability problems could simply be from suboptimal web.xml settings.

Does the 0.5.3 install use the most stable options in web.xml?
Are there any other files that need to be tweaked?

I am thinking that a lot of the problems in the field could be related to having a wrong set of settings. We are so close to a stable NXT server. I updated my peers list and now it is not going brain dead. Still need more time, but looking good so far.

The only thing that was changed was the list of peers, but I remember seeing a bunch of different tweaks. Has anybody tested the effect of the different tweaks on NXT server stability. So much work has been put into NXT, it would be a shame if a new NXT'er gets a bad experience due to suboptimal settings.

James

It got lost overnight Sad

Had the latest peers list, 0.5.3 and it had the usual bunch of orphans, etc. Maybe something about being on a Mac?

There is no way any large exchange will list NXT until the NXT server is stable. I am spending a lot of effort to smooth things over with peercover. Crashing or hanging servers, very bad

P.S. If you have a pending deposit, PM me and I will help track it down

I got no reply on my question regarding account to send the reward to. Could u contact the owner and ask if he needs 20K for the 3rd place in Exchange category?

I let him know to check his PM. He is traveling and in meetings a lot. You can always send it to the peercover acct 2269220637361284198

ricot,

Plz don't worry about me. Your time much better spent coming up with more evil twisted ways to break NXT. I am super impressed so far by your work!

Just wish I was fluent in java instead of C.  I knew that at a high level, getting untrustworthy data to get trusted was the key, but having to lookup every java call, just made me unable to see the forest through all the trees.

I am using wesleyh's MaxNXT so not sure how to refresh browser in this context. I click lock and login again, but all the same orphans are there.

I can redownload the entire block chain, that is one option and it fixes it for a few hours, then goes bad again. At least it did the first time. I will do it again and see what happens

James

What's that? Why aren't you using the official client?

Well, if it's based on the official client before 0.5.3 (very likely), then you still have that bug...
Solution: Get the official client Wink

My understanding is that MacNXT embeds the official client, it says it is using 0.5.3

All caught up:

The problem seems to happen after a few hours. I did "update peers" before this redownload of blockchain, so I am hoping for better stability.

James

P.S. I did not change anything from default installation other than Update peers

There's a thread in this forum about bugs in the code release. After my client had been attacked, I analyzed, what exactly happened and figured out, how the attacker managed to get the clients to basically crash. JLP and CfB fixed that now mostly by 0.5.3, the only thing that is left is the actual browser page. So when you see negative blocks, just refresh the tab in your browser and everything will look normal again. On the server side (communicating with other NXT clients) the server now behaves normally, even if you don't refresh your browser window.
If you want to see what kind of bugs we're finding and that are getting fixed, jump over to https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=397183.0

0.5.3 been running since released, so far so good. If it's still running OK in the morning that would a new record for me. Can't wait to find out. Smiley

Running 0.5.3 via NxtMac, on bad branch?

Do we know how to make the NXT server more stable. As it is each time it hangs, for personal use it is annoying, but not that big of a deal. Unless you are racing to the airport and can't send NXT!

What I'd like to know, what developers doing about this? Because if I know they are working on it, I can be patient, but I find it worrying that a few times this problem was bought up, it was simply brushed off as not important, or even nonexistent.

New features are important, some of them I'm very much looking forward to, but these stability issues absolutely should take priority.

jean-luc is prioritizing security issues and crash issues. I am just not sure if we actually know all the reasons for NXT server crashing or hanging.

Stable NXT server is definitely the biggest showstopper as far as I am concerned.
Once we have a stable server, we will instantly have automated deposit/withdrawal at exchanges being possible. Getting a reliable trading of NXT is definitely needed sooner, rather than later.
For those waiting for asset exchange, I point out that somebody without NXT has no way to participate in asset exchange. Plus I have not seen any real solutions to sorting out all the different issuers of all the different variants.

We need stable NXT server so we can have automated exchanges.

What is the longest anybody has been able to run NXT server, before having to restart it?

James

About 36h with 0.4.8, 0.5.0 was really bad - gave up on this, Upgraded to 0.5.3 stable since 3h

Do we know how to make the NXT server more stable. As it is each time it hangs, for personal use it is annoying, but not that big of a deal. Unless you are racing to the airport and can't send NXT!

However, for production use by say an exchange, each time the server needs to be restarted, all the transactions would need to be manually verified and completed if they got stuck somewhere. As I hear what peercover has been going through, I reduce my anti-dgex mood a notch or two, still fee amnesty would have been the minimum for dgex neutrality on my part. Also nxtgt is not officially affiliated with peercover in any way, he just took it on his own to do a great howto and gets banned by graviton. I admit I sent 300XRP to nxtgt so he can also fund the initial 30XRP needed.

Setting aside dgex issues, server stability is a must. People expected automated transactions and that is not possible without a stable server.

I've had a couple of people contact me about peercover deposits not showing up in their ripple accounts. This has been caused by NXT server crashing or hanging or getting lost. Until the NXT server is stable, fully automated process can be interrupted by having to restart the server. Then, the transactions will have to be manually reconciled to see which ones got stuck.

So far, the transactions have gone from the private deposit address to peercover's main NXT address. As long as it got there, or if it is stuck in the private deposit address, the NXT is safe. Just need to wait for it to be manually processed. Peercover did not expect all this manually processing would be required and did not staff a person to be dealing with this...

Is there a stable NXT server that can run for days and days without crashing or getting stuck, yet? I know there was some sort of attacker that made this problem worse, but I need to be able to tell Peercover which server to use and whether it is indeed stable enough for production (real money!) use

GREAT IDEA

1) So the USD would be deposit to this account...by wire transfer or western union etc...

2) to withdraw USD IBC would wire money to the recipient...so they will still be wiretransfer delays & fees

Edit: would this require serious manpower?

Online Banking has made these transfers very easy, just make sure the Belize Bank you choose offers it. Actually, the bank account does not even have to be with a Belize Bank as long as you find a bank that would be willing to open an account for the IBC and NOT you. It could be in any country... plus the IBC can offer deposits through an online payment service through its merchant account and customers will be able to deposit even with their Debit/Credit Cards. If income is earned outside Belize, there is NO TAX.

Pls explain more how we can do this in a decentralized way ASAP....thank you....also trust how to fix that

edit: we still need to trust the person doing the transfers

I can't think of how a gateway could be decentralized. If there were many gateways and a uber-issuer that spread across multiple gateways, it could approximate that, but it starts getting very complicated.

Did I mention peercover is already a USD gateway. Right now. No need to wait for asset exchange. This is why I know that using ripple gives NXT a strategic edge. All of the fiat regulation is dealt with by the ripple gateways. Any NXT/fiat gateway would need to do all the same sort of things anyway

James
What is needed in order to see NXT/USD in Peercover? NXT/BTC? I am talking about volumes, I may try to set up a market there tomorrow..

This is fantastic news!

There are two primary things that are needed. Sellers and buyers. If there were sellers with decent priced inventory and the buyers knew about it, then a market would automatically form. Of course, a persistent reminder about it won't hurt. Once the volumes are there and the spreads are low, then it will gain momentum on its own.

At first it might need someone to make a market to get the trades going. I would be more than happy to do that, as that is kind of my day job. Anybody can place orders in the orderbook, just need to select the NXT/USD or NXT/BTC pair.

nxtgt made a great howto for this: https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,2527.0.html
He has also volunteered to send the initial 30XRP needed for ripple accts.

Most important is to get people to just start using ripple. I will be going on a 17 hr bus ride soon, so I doubt I will have any wifi for a while. When I get back online I will be able to actively make a market in all three NXT/XRP, NXT/BTC and NXT/USD.

It does take a bit to get used to ripple, so the best thing everyone can do is just create a ripple acct and start the process. get 30XRP to get your acct activated and follow the howto

Hi,

I think some of people are playing on price to downward it. I was checking and even there were above buy order the price given by me, the buy order was complete. They sold it with quick sell.

big price moves on dgex only
prices pretty stable on ripple and I think also stable on nxtchg

This indicates attempt at moving the price and not that the price has moved.

That is because of the low volume on those two, I think

Usually low volume means that the price changes more as one order can really move things. Clearly, the trading on dgex is not pure trading of NXT. There are other issues that are affecting the price of NXT on dgex. Maybe we need to have a combined average price for NXT that incorporates all the markets? Like BTC has btc-e, bitstamp, half a dozen China exchanges, mtgox, all with different prices. Sometimes prices on one exchange change dramatically while stable at others. I remember when OKcoin CEO was in hot water, BTC there was significantly lower than the other China exchanges.

This address: 6483973064837388393   has Fee Earned:163,086 NXT. Is it possible to earn so much fee Cheesy?

That's DGEX exchange account...they've handled loads if millions of Nxt :p (along with their 75 million reserve account) so probably Smiley
Wrong Grin Better ask cfb Wink

I already asked Code-from-Beyonce how he forged so much by sending him 2 NXT and using the "alias-message-system"(AMS).

I remember he said that he only earned about 20000 NXT from forging. this number can't be right

Let Ripple act as Gateway for Fiat....we use them as middle man.

thats fine for now with peercover, but Id prefer options for direct country's fiat/NXT exchange.  Dont want ripple getting to powerful

Sigh...
Ripple doesn't gain any power if you use peercover as a USD gateway. peercover might make some profits, though last I checked datz wasn't charging any fees for ACH withdrawals (or deposits)

The issues all come down to Dgex, which is the only exchange for Nxt and the only source for coinmarketcap stats.  The site is often unavailable (ddos attacks) and subject to manipulation, furthermore, they've implemented outrageous fees causing many to shy away from trading.

Which is why we should move some trading over to Peercover. Not all trading, but some of it, just to test the waters. There aren't any fees and you don't even have to deal with XRP save for the reserve which comes down to less than a dollar's worth. Don't know why people are still hesitant to moving over there.

The reason i don't trade there because I don't like NXT-XRP exchange, trading for bitcoin via XRP giving me a headache. And you don' have a BTC-NXT order book.

Nothing prevents a NXT/BTC orderbook from forming. Just need people to place orders. This is what I initially recommended. Then it will be the exact same thing that is traded on dgex, just no fees, etc.

Actually, there are a few orders for peercover NXT/BTC in ripple now.

Is anyone going to become a gateway between NXT and fiat when Asset Exchange is launched? That would be interesting to know how trust issue is planned to be resolved.

PS: Rewards will be given to 3 best implementations.

Iguazu waterfalls. Simply amazing. Found wifi on the road!

Peercover is already a fiat gateway. So you can use it to convert NXT to USD. Nothing prevents a direct NXT/USD market, just would need to have enough people trading to make a decent market. Even without it, as long as there is an active NXT/XRP market, you can just send USD to yourself even if you don't have any USD and ripple will automatically convert the NXT -> XRP -> USD. You get to confirm prices before it actually does it.

I will also push peercover to use the Asset Exchange, maybe it can actually be a front end to the ripple backend. Not sure yet.
