61  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining from a dedicated server? on: May 26, 2011, 08:19:26 PM
Yes you could use it to mine. Just SSH into it (I assume it's running Linux) and set up like normal from there.
62  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Whole PC locks up when I attempt to mine with my XFX 5870? on: May 26, 2011, 04:42:34 PM
Managed to fix it by editing a profile and upping the idle clock speed from 157 to 400. It now runs as intended.
63  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Whole PC locks up when I attempt to mine with my XFX 5870? on: May 26, 2011, 03:14:44 PM
I think I may know what the problem is. The default clock speed is too low and I need to set it higher. You could easily do this in the old ATi Catalyst Control Center, but since AMD have released their own version of ccc (AMD VISION Engine Control Center) I don't know how to make profiles.

Can anyone help me here?
64  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Whole PC locks up when I attempt to mine with my XFX 5870? on: May 26, 2011, 12:55:00 PM
Hi there

I bought a new XFX 5870 1GB a few days ago and whenever I try to mine with it my whole computer locks up. The screen literally freezes and I have to restart my PC.

I had another XFX 5870 (which is now faulted too, but that's a different story) and that worked fine. I'm not running any extra flags, and I'm using the same settings as my previously working card of the same manufacturer.

My GPU idles at 157mhz core and 300mhz memory. There's also a number of green pixels on my screen, which seem to appear randomly, more so when the graphics card has to do something, like in a game, or attempting to mine. It seems that maybe the card is limited because games lag like crazy (and shouldn't on a 5870) and since mining takes the GPU from 0-100% immediately, I'm thinking that it has trouble adjusting and just locks up.

Any suggestions on what's going on here?

Why don't you guys just build your own with the same hardware as his? It's cheaper...

If you going to beg for donations...
The minimum you could do...
Is putting up some numbers...
Show me your calculations...

Price of rig...
Expected Mhashes...
Future bitcoin value...
Future difficulty level...

Or do you just want free money...
Not even willing to spend an hour...
Putting up some estimates...
To back your lofty dreams....
What's with all the ...s?
As per request I will update my first post with some targets.

I plan to upgrade completely depending on the volume of donations received.
This could mean a 6970 to replace my 4850,
then if things keep going well I'll buy some other mining card,
put it in my old desktop and run that 24/7 too.
(My 4850 would sit in that after my first upgrade.)

Or maybe I'll crossfire, who knows.
Point is, all donations will go ONLY towards my mining capabilities.
All will be refunded +20% chronologically.

I think you would be better off finding friends to donate to you OP. The chances of you getting enough backing from here as an anonymous person with no reputation on the forum are slim. Maybe you can convince your parents, people at your university etc. to invest in you. They might not fully understand the cause as much as people on here do, but you'll get more money out of them.

Just make sure that you've worked it out properly and you can indeed pay these people back, because if you can't afford to do it on your own at the moment then I'm sure that you won't able to afford to pay them back if things go wrong.

Your replies look like poems. Stop typing like an idiot. If you don't like what this guy's doing then just don't reply to his thread.

It seems that the card is actually broken
69  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Second GPU won't work? on: May 19, 2011, 02:35:09 PM
Hey guys, having a little issue, maybe someone knows what's wrong. I've been mining fine for the last couple of days under Windows using a single 5870. Today my second 5870 was delivered and I decided to use Ubuntu. I can get my first card running perfectly fine, but the second card either crashes my computer or runs at very low khash/s

I followed the Ubuntu 11.04 guide and I can get my first GPU to mine perfectly, but if I change the device to -d2 (from d1, I've confirmed that the second GPU is d2) it either doesn't display anything and the terminal crashes, or it'll display a 653khash/s or so.

Does anyone know what's wrong with this?
70  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Caseless mining rigs - Is it advisable? on: May 18, 2011, 11:56:00 AM
As my video cards are very close together, I get better cooling (25 degree drop) by using a case with 2 holes cut so the fans can blow air straight on to the cards than going caseless. Lots of people are using a variety of caseless setups, though.

That's insane. My single 5870 is at 60 in my case.
71  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Caseless mining rigs - Is it advisable? on: May 17, 2011, 06:45:56 PM
in case i have 5-10 C mare than in caseless one
otherwise you have to use expensive fans like this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835706028

That's what I was thinking about. My 5870 is at 61 degrees in my case with 100% fan. I'd like to see that a little bit lower so I can run my fans quieter.
72  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How do I know that it's working? on: May 17, 2011, 06:40:40 PM
MtRed, BTCMine... either of those would be good right now i think..

I've gone with MtRed. Thanks for the recommendation.

So do you think I should go alone once I have around 1.5ghash/s? That should be when I get my second rig.
73  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How do I know that it's working? on: May 17, 2011, 06:33:34 PM
It's just the hash rate that's displayed, no errors or confirmations. Is this how it's meant to go?

What are you using? GUIMiner?

As for running in a pool, it allows you to stabilize your income. Instead of waiting 1/3 of a month (on average ! can be longer or shorter...) you see results much sooner.

No, I'm using command line poclbm.

Can you recommend a pool then? The botnet nature of Deepbit scared me away.
74  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How do I know that it's working? on: May 17, 2011, 06:22:00 PM
So I got my 5870 yesterday and I've had it going in Deepbit for a day (Previously had a 560Ti, just wasn't cutting it).

After reading the anti-Deepbit threads I've decided to try it alone for a month. I've just ordered another 5870 to double my hashing power and at current difficulty levels, calculators tell me it'll take 10 days on average to generate my first block.

How do I know that I've not done something wrong? Poclbm is happily mining away with a speed of 370mhash/s so I assume it's doing something. With Deepbit I knew it was working because I could see the results by the hour, but how do I know this is working?

If you're seeing numbers (eg. 370mhash/s), then it's working.

It should show you if there are any invalid blocks that would cause you issues.

It's just the hash rate that's displayed, no errors or confirmations. Is this how it's meant to go?
75  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How do I know that it's working? on: May 17, 2011, 06:21:30 PM
dont try it alone... go join one of the smaller pools :p you (at the moment) will make more money that way, and rebalance the pools

What're the advantages? Don't you make less money in the long run in a pool?
76  Bitcoin / Mining / Caseless mining rigs - Is it advisable? on: May 17, 2011, 06:20:45 PM
I've maxed out my computers 2 PCI-E slots right now, so my next step will be building a whole new rig with a couple of 5870s. I want to cut down the costs as much as I can (Parts are relatively expensive in the UK) so I'm thinking of going for a caseless setup, with just the motherboard and relevant components on top of a surface.

Is anyone doing this at the moment? I've seen the guy on YouTube go caseless and he doesn't seem to have any extra cooling. The UK's quite cold at the moment, and it doesn't get nearly as hot over here as it does in other countries during the summer (Which will hit fully in a couple of months).

Has Deepbit.net gone down?
79  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Building a mining rig and thinking... on: May 17, 2011, 10:22:33 AM
Registrera and logga in?!? What the hell can this possibly mean?!

I'm a Brit and I'm quite interested in joining this away from Deepbit. I'll have to translate of course, but other than that there shouldn't be any issues should there?
80  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: UK exchange: Britcoin on: May 17, 2011, 05:40:26 AM
not many people selling BTC at the moment.... come on people, I wanna buy some  Cheesy
Offer a better price.

eh, that was just a brief period when only one person was selling and that was at £10 / 1 btc...

And I'm not interested in waiting around on the orderbook, I just wanted to own some ASAP =)

But never mind, it's all go now.

Want to buy some bitcoins? Tempt me! Put a decent bid on britcoin and I or someone else might just decide to fill it. At least it is a bit more constructive than complaining that there are no asks.

i am sooo freaking <s>bad</s> glad you're still posting, vladimir. (  Smiley )

you had me worried a couple of days ago, when you said a post might be your last.  we need you russians - especially the best of you:  so practical and strategic...

american tinkers and russian chess-players.  we could ("dare i say it" [see: beatles; 'help'; movie]) rule the world...

I think he's English...

he's in england.

a whole different thing.

It was more the perfect grasp of English than the location that lead me to think he was English. I'm sure that he's been in the UK for a long time, so I'd consider him English Wink
