Why sould BTC-E be the worlds leading e-crime website HuhHuh
Because USA has made it a crime to exchange money without license or anonymously. In their eyes this is hardcore criminal behavior deserving of decades or even life in prison. USA's law applies in all countries in the world including any other planets such as Mars, Pluto etc.

The only way to protect yourself against the US is if you are in a country that is enemy of the US and will not extradite you, however they can still use drones to kill you.

Shutdown is better than hacked though, right?
At least we can have hope of seeing our coins again. Maybe..
Not necessarily. I'd rather them be hacked for 2-3k BTC than shut down by the US government. It can become a long and difficult battle to get any money back from "one of the world's leading e-crime websites".

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek police arrested a Russian man suspected of running a money laundering operation involving turning $4 billion from illicit business activities into the digital currency bitcoin, they said on Wednesday.

Police did not name the 38-year-old, who was arrested in the northern Greek region of Chalkidiki on Monday on a U.S. warrant.

He is suspected of heading a criminal organization since 2011 that "owns, operates and manages one of the world's leading e-crime websites", police said in a statement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow said it had no information on the case.

Bitcoin was the first digital currency to successfully use cryptography to keep transactions secure and hidden, making traditional financial regulation difficult if not impossible.

Reporting by Karolina Tagaris in Athens and Jack Stubbs in Moscow; Editing by Louise Ireland

Everything seems to match up unfortunately.

Russian - check
Ran the site since 2011 - check
Exchanging funds into bitcoin - check
One of the worlds leading "e-crime" website - check
BTC-E went down same day as arrest - check

Sad day if true. BTC-E was great. I am pro anonymity and btc-e provided that. It looks like the owner may be paying a hefty price in the end. Sad

what? since when was btce ever hacked? i was a member since the 2013 rise and cant remember they were hacked before... anyway. staying up late as im in cash there and wanted to rebuy when the sercive comes back
BTC-E was hacked in 2012. Hackers gained access to their Liberty Reserve IPN and could inject unlimited fiat into the exchange. They bought up various crypto's and withdrew approx 4500 BTC.

65  Local / Skandinavisk / Re: tax on bitcoin profits in scandinavia? on: July 16, 2017, 05:44:44 PM
You will have to pay income tax on crypto in Norway. 27%

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1941137.msg19938861#msg19938861
66  Local / Skandinavisk / Re: tax on bitcoin profits in scandinavia? on: July 04, 2017, 07:55:20 PM
Norway: In 2017 the capital gains tax is 24%. If you sell bitcoin, you pay 24% on profits. I hope you have proof of your purchases, because you may need to provide that later down the line. Any bitcoin holdings you have are supposed to be taxed with fortune tax, which is ~0.85% per year of your bitcoins (only applies if your fortune is 1 480 000 kr or more).

You can read the full details of the tax agency's opinion here:
Code:
http://www.skatteetaten.no/no/Bedrift-og-organisasjon/rapportering-og-bransjer/e-handel/skattemessige-konsekvenser-ved-bruk-av-bitcoins-og-andre-virtuelle-valutaer-for-privatpersoner/

I am of the personal opinion that fortune tax does not apply, the tax agency started claiming VAT is required on bitcoin, but changed their mind after EU came out with a declaration regarding bitcoin. No laws were changed. It is therefore possible that the tax agency is wrong on both fortune tax and capital gains tax, although I have no good legal argument against capital gains tax at this time and I will not reveal my argument against fortune tax as to not provide time for agency to figure out a comeback.

This is not a unique problem for norway or denmark. I live in Oslo and in spite of all my effort, i couldnīt get any solid answer from state authorities. This is a commen problem as i have been investigating it in 2 other countries as well. So unless you are in a country like Japan or Netherland, you will never get answer for all your questions. The real problem here is that people that are representing legal authorities, most politicians and even most of their advisors have no clue about Bitcoin.

I do a lot of freelance work in Bicoin business. I called "skatteetaten" a few times in the past to find out more about tax regulations. First, they do not understand, if you try to explain they tell you that there is no legal liabilities for it.

Norway is one of the most heavily taxed country in the world with a total tax burden of roughly 45% of GDP and personal income tax rates border 55% or even higher depending on your income. How stupid is that they canīt hire a few cryptocurrency experts to work in tax department which will end up with them collecting more taxes. So if they do not give a s.it, why would i run after them with money in my hands.
Especially after my recent problems with them.... I give you an advise, in a country where your every single bank transaction is closely watched, make yourself a favour and keep your money in Bitcoin. Remember! Bitcoin is not only about decentralized and cheap currency solution, but also financial Freedom.

I do understand your frustration mate, but it is not right to advice people to hide their assets. Yes, taxes are quite high in Norway, in fact it is one of the highest in the world, but this is also what makes this country such a good place. High standards, good health care, free education and etc. If people start using Bitcoin to hide their assets, it will cause some serious problems in the future. However, i do aggree with you about legal departments not having enough eligiable employements. I just think this think take time, and somehow it takes little longer in skandinavia...
Taxes is the antithesis of anything good. If you want a better society the best you can do is to avoid taxes and encourage others to do the same. The more people who operate outside of the state the better for society. Taxes does not produce wealth, it distributes it. It's a strike of luck that Norway has its oil reserves, but the luck will run out.

I have yet to receive any contact. Will be on vacation with spotty internet until Monday.

It's been more than a month now and still no reply. Roger on the other hand is still here and true to his word.

Nice timing scammers, oops Grin

This is pure speculation from me, with no proof: Vox guys has been sucking the market dry by dumping all their coins on the market for months and using this equity thing as a final exit pump. Poloniex discovered how shady it looked and found out the owners has been cashing out a ton of BTC by spreading lies and manipulating the market.

Why else would a coin with 2k volume get delisted ?

Very happy to see polo delist this coin. VOX is a operated by the notorious thief Halsey Minor. He is scum.

There's very little reason to believe anything about VOX is honest. It reeks scam from a mile away. The only reason it exist is to extract money from suckers.

notthematrix: No. Roger Ver doesn't need to sign anything whatsoever. Let me tell you how this works:

Roger either takes the bet, or he doesn't. If he takes the bet there must be some kind of escrow, that will simultaneously prove his ownership of the funds. Who cares if he owns it or not before he accepts the bet? It doesn't matter one bit. He has not accepted anything yet, he has simply expressed interest. Clear terms must be defined before an agreement can be made and this takes time to work out. Have some patience for christ sake.

Most believe Roger will not take the deal, me included. However, the last thing I'm waiting for is for him to sign anything, so please stop repeating yourself, we heard you the first 10 times.

PS: I've received no further communication from Roger at this time.

It takes some time to work out the details on a deal this size. My first e-mail to Roger Ver bounced, apparently he had over 10k e-mails spam attack last few days. But my second e-mail got through. He's hoping to connect to Loaded this weekend, so no conclusion yet, but he did not decline the offer for a pool to participate in the deal. Let's just give it some more time and see.
73  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: @RogerVer lets make a deal. At least 60k, my BTU for your BTC. on: March 22, 2017, 03:30:13 PM
Is it here where we queue to collect Roger's coins in exchange of worthless shitcoins?  Cheesy

Ping me if a pool is organised.
I've sent an e-mail to Roger voicing interest in taking part of this trade as a pool. We'll see.
74  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: @RogerVer lets make a deal. At least 60k, my BTU for your BTC. on: March 22, 2017, 12:09:28 PM
I'd be interested in participating in a pool if it can be organized. I'm guessing there's thousands of BTC that would be interested in this. I'd trust dooglus as an escrow if no atomic swap can be established.

Nice to see my song getting a newer audience.

The song is ironic. A forum user with the nick of "proudhon" used to post his never ending pessimistic and bearish predictions here in 2012-2013, so much in fact that his name became notorious on the forums. The song is one sung from his perspective while the price keeps raising exponentially. It's a joke about him always remaining a true bear despite the price running away from him.

I added this while you were posting.

Quote
If you really wanted to help liquidity you wold put those coins on other exchanges and set up some trading bots.
While I encourage that as well, especially putting some coins up for sale at bitsquare the decentralized exchange, I don't think there's really any kind of liqudity that is better than the other. They serve different functions, and both are important. In fact, a shorter HAS to buy back, a seller doesn't have to buy back. With a short you are thus guaranteed the liquidity both ways.
78  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 15, 2016, 06:45:27 PM
..
I can't get butthurt I have nothing but dust. I'm pissed that those loans protect shorters and hurt the ecosystem.

please explain how they hurt the ecosystem  in your view Huh

a healthy lending market does nothing but support the ecosystem, since it enables a variety if financial strategies and tools (e.g. hedging) for all market participants.

you seem confused really. protecting shorters? we make shorting possible in the first place. if they get rekt by doing so is not my decision.

+1

There's this common misconception about people selling (or worse: shorting) that they are hurting the coin. You'll notice that people who are bearish tend to get more hate directed towards them. It makes perfect sense, because if you hold and the price is going down it hurts. And who's causing the price to go down? Well obviously sellers/shorters. Shorters becomes an enemy to blame for ones own losses, an outlet for all the frustration that builds up during a long drawn out and bloody beartrend.

While it's easy to fall victim to this sort of thinking I believe this view is narrow minded and here's why:
Without opposing forces the price may go higher, but it will be on low volume and the crashes will be much deeper. In a sense the price becomes more artificial the less volume is involved and the less liquidity is available. Sellers/shorters provide a very important function in the market, that is: liquidity which prevents the price from going too high, and also liqudity that prevents the price from going too low (shorters must close their short, traders who sell buy back). These opposing forces work beautifully to stabilize a market and avoid even higher and lower spikes that we would have had without them. The more opposing forces in a market the more stable it becomes. Stability is GOOD for the coin, not bad.

Can we think of any example where there are no sellers and shorters? Yes. Zcash. There was almost zero supply as it launched and no way to properly short, and the consequence of that was a launching price that went beyond 2 million USD. The ATH has been set and we'll never see prices even remotely close. If there had been sufficient amount of sellers or shorters, this would not have happened, the price would have reflected reality better. I don't think it's heatlhy for any coin to have such raises like we've seen in zcash. And as we've just witnessed, without sellers/shorters, that's what you're gonna get.
79  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [ZEC] Zcash Speculation on: October 29, 2016, 05:06:56 PM
Why?

this really needs answering? it's the same number of coins as bitcoin ultimately. it has no usage. it's centralized. there might be security holes. if a few million were available right now the price would be more like 0.01. the only thing justifying any price is the near total lack of them.

He said he'll look at zcash at 0.1.
I was interested why anyone has a interest in that coin at any price Wink
For some days/weeks before i saw zcash by myself as a good speculation coin. But since my studies i figured out that I'll probably lose my money. That's why i decided to not trade this coin. Doesn't matter at what price. It is just not existing for me.
Zcash is based on new cryptographic research that is very exciting and will provide many use cases. It brings value. So for me it's a question of value proposition. Since the technology is new and untested, has no usage or adoption and just launched I think there's a mismatch between current price and what I value it. It is my belief that the price will stagnate for a very long time and my target is sub 0.1 BTC. Until that time Zcash is of very little interest speculation wise as there's little money to be made in the downward spiral (unless shorting becomes viable, however I think this will take a long time too).

Everyone can see that the lack of supply and current price is madness. Once the price settles down to reality, I will have to look closer. Will I buy? Probably not at 0.1 BTC, but until that price it's so overpriced that it's not worth paying attention to at all. Assuming no catastrophic failure (e.g critical bug), at some price point it will likely be undervalued, and that is when I will buy.

Most altcoins even the scammiest ones still have value to this day. Zcash has something to offer, just not at this price.
80  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [ZEC] Zcash Speculation on: October 29, 2016, 01:30:08 PM
With the massive influx of new supply ZEC is now facing a 99% value depreciation over the coming month and years. There's no reason to buy and hold zcash with such bleak future outlook. No long term investors, no adoption, no usage. It's going to one of the most brutal bear markets in the history of crypto. I advice to just forget about zcash for the next months, it's not going anywhere but down.

Sub 0.1 BTC is where I'll start looking at it.
