61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Dogeparty, Counterparty for the Dogecoin blockchain! (official) on: August 13, 2014, 01:43:17 PM
Will I need to have the entire dogecoin blockchain synced onto my PC? I recently uninstalled Dogecoin core and installed multidoge so I hope that won't be a problem.

Will there be a webwallet like counterparty's webwallet?

Yes exactly like Counterparty's wallet.

The DOGE-TESTNET version is here for example:

Does one need both Dogecoin-qt with the blockchain synced and Dogewallet to burn, or can we just install Dogewallet, send doges from an exchange to it and burn? Dogewallet will have its own blockchain?

Uses the existing Dogeparty blockchain. Don't use existing wallets, it's just way messier. We'll provide a wallet that supports XDP and the assets (a fork of Counterwallet). All is told on dogeparty.io.

Bitcoin-based Counterparty is a fantastic system for serious crypto-finance, but for smaller value transactions, when it comes to placing orders, creating assets, and generally taking care of business DOGE brings some great advantages to the party:

  • 10x faster
  • 100x cheaper

Repo here:

Please note that the bitcointalk user 'dogeparty' is a name squatter who is not affiliated with this project.

So let me get this straight, you are taking our copy and our name and building an "enthusiast" project with it? Does that make any sense? You are free to fork or do your own implementation, but at least have the decency to call it something else.
67  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XDP] dogeparty - a layer on the Dogecoin network for new coins (clone XCP) on: July 24, 2014, 11:11:13 AM
Hi folks,

In a way it's nice to see this, since it somehow confirms interest. But please be aware, this is not an official thread for the project and neither Humint nor Socialgiver control the 'dogeparty' bitcointalk account.

OP, could you come clean about who you are? I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are some kind of enthusiast and are just keeping the seat warm for us?

In any case, here are the real information channels:

We at Humint are just putting the finishing touches on Dogeparty, a layer that rides on top of the Dogecoin network, allowing anyone to inexpensively create new coins and tokens that live on (but are financially separate from) the Dogecoin network. This is similar to Mastercoin or Counterparty on Bitcoin (in fact it IS a version of Counterparty!).

Here's the announcement thread if anyone is interested in chatting about it!

About your investment.

Pics or it didn't happen. Where's your proof?

The dramatic arc of this thread was interesting, but if you don't mind, let's let sleeping dogs lie.
70  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Introducing Hive, a beautiful new wallet for Mac OS X on: July 06, 2014, 10:09:58 AM
I also think the work I see in the Hive wallet is very good... my only issue is with Java, and you've stated you want to move away from it anyway so that's all good.

For OS X, indeed. And for the record, there is no Java in Hive Web. Wink
71  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Gliph - Secure Messaging and Bitcoin Transfers on iOS, Android and the Web on: July 06, 2014, 10:04:07 AM
Hi Rob, all good news, but have you opened sourced Gliph yet?
Hey there, is this Wendell posting? I want to clarify so there is no sense of this being a Hive vs Gliph Q&A. We like Hive and what it is doing and are not positioning our company to be in competition with Hive.

Regardless, thanks for posing this important question again, I'll seek to clarify this:

We do not have plans to open source Gliph. Gliph does leverage open source components, and we have already contributed valuable open source code in the mobile space, specifically related to cross-platform Bluetooth technology to the bitcoin community.

As I mentioned previously in this thread, I explained in detail the reasons it is unlikely Gliph's code base will be open sourced at this time in one of my previous interviews with Adam Levine on Let's Talk Bitcoin. I ask if you have questions that were not answered there to direct them to me personally and I can try to explain. You can send me a message through this message board or use this link to chat with me: https://gliph.me/x68

There are some folks who feel that software products they use must be open source or rely solely on distributed technology. We believe open source is very important and support those people and their choices of products that do that. We also celebrate the value of distributed systems.

However, Gliph is still a startup and it is not our focus to satisfy these requirements. As Muhammed sort of indicates below, Gliph is focused on building something that makes fantastic compromises between privacy, security, real-world utility and great user experiences. We can't do everything, or we'd accomplish nothing.

Hi Rob, it was me.

The post had nothing to do with perceived competition; I also don't consider you competitive. I wrote what I wrote because it seems highly irresponsible to market something as "secure and private" when it is impossible to audit the source—we're in the post-Snowden era here, are we not? I don't mean to pick on you guys in particular, you seem like a nice, well-intentioned bunch. But if you truly care about privacy and security, then I don't see how you can disagree with my premise. The old way of doing things has had its day.

"Any person can invent a security system so clever that she or he can't think of how to break it." —Bruce Schneier

Anyway it's your company and you are of course free to do as you like, but I will continue to encourage you to re-think this strategy, and likewise discourage anyone I know from using Gliph until a different direction is taken.

PS- Can you explain to me why "startup" and "open source" are at odds? I don't really follow.

In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,[1] by posting inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

Asking why you're not spending time to write a native app, and getting angry when you can't even be civil to one of your investors is not trolling.

Well NanoAkron, that sounds exactly right.

Try for a moment to understand: you literally popped up out of nowhere not only being extremely rude, but telling us our business while bandying about the claim that you are an SF1 investor... All the while getting most of the facts about SF1's investment wrong. It's highly fishy to me, and unfortunately one of the disadvantages of SF1 is that I have no way to verify who you say you are (not that it would really have changed my attitude about your approach).

As for the answer to your question, it has largely been given by jsuder already: We spent time addressing the iOS problem in a different way, having begun that work long before there was any sign of Apple changing their policy. Now that they may have changed course, our direction is to Cordova-wrap the fruit of the last 4 months' labor -- Hive Web -- for App Store consumption. That ongoing work can be found here:

https://github.com/hivewallet/hive-ios

There are no plans for a native app at this time.

If you have any further questions or thoughts -- that goes for you NanoAkron, or anyone else, truly -- email me directly at w@hivewallet.com . I'm fully on for debate, discussions, or even flat-out arguments about what we are doing. But I won't tolerate the presumptive money-over-decency approach for even one second. The people who make Hive happen all work very hard, and given their considerable talents certainly make far less money for far greater risk than they would elsewhere.

Are we clear on that? If yes then let me be the first to extend an olive branch and apologize for flying off the handle at you.
73  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Introducing Hive, a beautiful new wallet for Mac OS X on: July 03, 2014, 03:03:30 AM
Jsuder - my 2BTC does not give me 50% of Hive. But our collective 150BTC through seed coin SURE AS FUCK does. Get off your high horse and realise that without investors like myself you'd be working on your next little project instead of having a shot at the big time. A big time which you're choosing to ignore. Tell us, how do you plan to monetise anything you've produced so far and return any value to your investors?

NanoAkron, you are truly an expert troll, but let me clarify things: Your investment gives you a percentage of dividends from Seedcoin's SF1, which has purchased not even close to 50% of Hive. If you've been led to believe otherwise, you'd better go read the prospectus again.

As for monetization, I will tell you what we've already said a few times in this very thread: We believe that we can monetize the app platform based on additional transaction fees (and we've recently had a few more ideas). All of this requires growth, so please do keep trolling! It just brings attention to our good work!

Quote
I stand by my original assessment that a native iPhone app is your only way to monetise what you've produced, and ignoring that is to betray your investors.

It's great that you have an opinion, but we won't be charging for our Cordova-wrapped iOS Wallet.

Quote
Now let me think...do I want to use a product designed by petulant children who have no business plan?

Sounds like it's definitely better that you don't.

First off 150 BTC for a nice looking wallet... I will say that you are very overvalued like so many bitcoin companies, and seedcoin is people that know nothing about investing in companies investing in a fund, to help startups. Now you see the problem with this right here.

Second and more importantly, I would never want to work with hive if you can't answer a person's question like a human. He asked a simple question, how do you see iOS fitting into you into your roadmap/ why are you completely ignoring that position?

Being in business is sometimes being the coolest head in the room, but when the leader starts jumping off the gun like that, then I would say the leader is not fit to lead a company. This is only going to get harder, and not easier. I have had to deal with investors that come at very hostile. They given you their money and they want to see it grow, and sometimes they think they know best. You need to as the leader of the company listen to them out, and calmly defuse the situation and explain why your path is correct one.

Hi Gweedo,

He didn't really ask a question. He made various inaccurate accusations, misrepresented facts and generally behaved like a tool. He deserved exactly what he got. Just because someone has (ostensibly) thrown a little money our way doesn't give them the right to be rude with impunity. We do this as a service to the community first and foremost, and would rather clean toilets than pander to such "investors".
74  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Introducing Hive, a beautiful new wallet for Mac OS X on: July 01, 2014, 11:25:44 PM
How can you not have enough time or money to work on creating a native iOS app? This is the defining point in your company's history, and the entire reason SeedCoin gave you ~300BTC a few months ago.

You're betraying your users and investors by failing to meet the market's expectations.

Hi there,

First of all, we received 150 BTC from Seedcoin, most of which was delivered long before Apple made their apparent "reversal" (which is still unclear as far as I'm concerned).

Second of all, you can fuck right off with that attitude. We are doing our best to make quality software for everyone. 100+ years of propaganda has blurred the line with respect to reasonable investor etiquette, but being rude doesn't fly with us. If you don't agree with some of our decisions, maybe try a more constructive approach. We are as open as it is possible to be.
75  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone else tired of new coins? on: June 27, 2014, 12:41:38 PM
Let's call this syndrome "coin fatigue". ;-)

Anyway, we indeed haven't seen anything yet. By this time next year I estimate we'll have 5,000+ unique blockchains and 100,000+ new tokens created on the various meta-layer protocols.

You guys had better start thinking about this as something other than "currency", because in the event that the world isn't very interested in that particular application (as it seems), the much-feared issue of dilution is certainly inevitable.
76  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which currency should Hive support next? on: June 27, 2014, 12:27:19 PM
Please read the whole thread on that link, not just the first paragraph, manfred has no idea what he's talking about.

Please don't turn this thread into a PoW/PoS debate. Hive is not going to take a side on this topic other than to state that we will continue to make awesome software that serves as many users/communities as we can.
77  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which currency should Hive support next? on: June 26, 2014, 06:02:48 AM
Wait, are you serious? I honestly couldn't tell without reading that twice, but I *think* you actually *are* being serious...

Which is awful. Especially if you work with crypto for a living. None of this works AT ALL without scarcity. The entire point of bitcoin, and altcoins for that matter, is recording the transfer of a scarce asset. Without scarcity there really is no asset, or at least no reason to record the transfer of it, since there's no value. How do you not get that*?

You can make arguments for supporting alts in your wallet if you like, but to categorically refute the validity of digital scarcity is just asinine.

* or maybe I'm just being expertly trolled...?

Digital scarcity within the framework of a single token—that of course makes sense. But expecting everyone to value your assumptions equally re: precisely which token(s) are important ("artificial digital scarcity")? That is a non-starter, a fact which should be obvious to anyone who knows that human beings are not uniformly rational, nor uniformly in possession of the same set of needs and desires.

Let me be clear: I love Bitcoin, I hold Bitcoin, and (for now) we run Hive on it, exclusively... But I still feel that these arguments against other tokens are spurious at best. See my point about semantics.

tl;dr: I am indeed trolling you, but not in the way that you may think.
78  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which currency should Hive support next? on: June 26, 2014, 03:15:05 AM
I would strongly advise that you consider what you're doing a little more deeply. We're currently in this manic phase of new alt-coins, where every idea, ranging from the *very* few good/interesting ideas, to the irrelevant tweak/scam-coins, gets a day or three in the sun. It's clear that 99+% of the alt coins out there will not last, and that almost definitely includes what many would consider some of the top alts today.

The damage to crypto-currency in general caused by the current alt-mania is non-trivial. The existence of non-technically-interesting alt coins gives credence to the crypto-currency naysayers who insist that the entire space is a flash in the pan because alts prove you can't have digital scarcity. We only play into the hands of this argument by supporting alts.

I'm a firm believer that we'll only end up with 3 or 4 coins long-term (and we have *no idea* which those are going to be yet) and that they'll serve distinct market niches due to meaningful technical differentiation. This situation would actually be somewhat analogous to how the precious metals markets developed; there are only a few that carry non-industrial value.

I just hope that leading companies in the crypto space *do* consider these meta-dynamics and aren't just looking for short-run boosts to their own userbase at the expense of the long-run health of the entire community.

Choose wisely.

Hive is a supporter of Token Neutrality:

• We do not believe it appropriate that wallet makers hold bias towards one token or another.
• We find arguments for artificial digital scarcity well-reasoned, but ultimately delusional.

No doubt the semantic framing of this topic is responsible for most of the confusion. If one swaps the word 'currency' for 'shares' as Daniel and Stan of Clan Larimer have been suggesting, things look quite a bit different. These two brilliant pieces are recommended reading for everyone:

http://bitshares.org/a-bitrose-by-any-other-name/
http://bitshares.org/the-end-of-cryptomoney/

We at Hive agree that so-called crypto-currency is not money—even if it can be used that way, and even if it is sometimes convenient to describe it that way. We're actively working on our language, but let me be crystal-clear about that perspective now.

I know that $1,000,000/BTC was an exit strategy for a handful of people, but there's nary a prayer of it playing out that way. We of Earth love our novelty, and I in particular find the idea of artificial digital scarcity so painfully fucking boring that I'm going to spend my time making your world view more difficult to sustain, as both a career and a hobby.

Jason, Phineas et al:

We've recent built Spinjar, which is designed to test whether or not we can incentivize donations by entering part of each one into a lottery pot. The theory is that it may encourage higher or more frequent donations overall.

If you're interested in using it somewhere, we have already created a Spinjar address for Sean's Outpost:

Would appreciate some feedback about this idea too, if y'all have any thoughts.

PS, Phin-- We also have one of these for Bitcoin 100, but I did not want to spam EVERY thread. ;-) If you want to fetch that, it's here: http://www.spinjar.me/preview
