601  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike 1 Avalon Asic chip Mini USB miner on: July 09, 2013, 05:30:38 PM
Currently we are planning to sell complete k1 units but we are also looking at interest from people about selling k1 with everything but the asic chips also.

Well I have 9 (or maybe 8, depending on whether I get any bad ones or not) from steamboat's group 5 batch, and 4 from ragingazn's group buy, so I'm potentially looking to get 13 done with my own chips.  Could I maybe get a credit for trading in chips towards the purchase of fully populated K1s?
602  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike 1 Avalon Asic chip Mini USB miner on: July 09, 2013, 02:07:47 PM
Powered Hub 10+ Ports?
Overclocking?
Raspberry Pi?
SD Card with preflashed miner?

Our group is looking at fabricating a larger volume for sale just K1s.

$2 from every one we sell goes to BKKCoins.

Maybe August for some and larger numbers becoming available as chips arrive for September.

Potential volume 11000 K1s.

We will start a new thread as soon as we get closer to our fabrication date suffice to say we are just waiting on BKKCoins to finalize everything.
Fabrication will be with a large international smt company on the island of Batam in Indonesia. Close to Singapore.
We are also keen to bundle Raspberry Pi's, USB Hubs and pre-flashed SD cards for those who want a more complete solution.

Are you accepting chips or just selling fully populated K1s?  I need assembly for 9 chips extra I bought.

I can think of one other use for the usb erupters, but i'd rather not mention it. i'll let someone else open pandora's box. Shocked

Password cracking?
604  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group buy] Bitfury ASIC chip and TechnoBit assembly service 2900 chips left on: July 09, 2013, 11:24:26 AM
Iam sure there will be a 1 chip Miner for Bitfury, but now its just not the time, because the whole data will only be delivered in case of an chip order.

Agreed; but I can afford maybe 4 chips in the next couple of weeks.  Also, does this group buy ship internationally?
605  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group buy] Bitfury ASIC chip and TechnoBit assembly service on: July 09, 2013, 10:54:34 AM
how many chips will take your miner?
and which will be the power of that?
It will be 16 chip miner, with Microchip 16 bit PIC controler with USB control

Only 16 chip miner?  These chips are much more expensive than Avalon's.  Any plans for a 1 chip miner?  That would be much more economical for those miners whose pockets are not very deep.

607  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Ann] US based Avalon ASIC chips and assembly: 4,600 remaining on: July 07, 2013, 11:55:04 PM
The optimum cost depends on how many you ordered -- the K16 board is the most cost effective.

Agreed.  I have 41 chips, 16 in Group Buy #3 and 25 in Group Buy #5.  For the #5, I originally intended to do 1 K16 and 9 K1's, selling some of the K1's.  But At this point it'll be cheaper for me to go 1 K16 and 1 K16 with 8 chips, and then get the last 1 made into a K1.  This way instead of $30 some odd a pop * 8, I have $100 some odd * 1.
608  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Ann] US based Avalon ASIC chips and assembly: 4,600 remaining on: July 07, 2013, 11:43:24 PM
Two things.

One: Steamboat it really boosted my confidence in you to see that you had sent BKKCoins a heatsink.  Shows dedication to the development and definitely makes you appear more legit in my book.  So thanks for going the extra mile.

Two: Do we have the option of doing less than 16 chips on a board?  My order was the max # of chips I could afford (which wasn't a multiple of 16), with the idea that I'd make the extras into K1's somehow and sell those.  However, if I wanted 8 chips on a K16, would that be feasible?  I'd expect the cost to be identical.
609  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike - 16 chip ASIC Open Source Board - Preliminary on: July 06, 2013, 12:52:31 AM
I was wondering whether you could make a K1 Nano on a breadboard and if you can where can i find the circuits and component lists?

Everything's on the git in the OP.  The avalon is SMD so you'll need some kind of breakout adapter.

That would be very cool...

Anyone doing this should start a thread so I can follow.  Would be interested to follow along with a chip or two of my own.
610  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Bitfury is looking for alpha-testers of first chips! FREE MONEY HERE! on: July 05, 2013, 04:46:07 PM
Bitfury chip sales are not in the pipeline. Chips are designated for sale only to Metabank and 100TH as far as we know.

Do you guys know about this:
http://www.bitfurystrikesback.com/shop/

Is that legit?

Bitfury posted that link on Russian forums, so seems pretty legit.

So chips ARE for sale to the general public.  Man, it's about to get crazy difficult to find a block.

612  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Bitcoin Centralizes Profit in the Hands of Miners on: July 05, 2013, 03:40:17 PM
In my opinion, one of the goals of Bitcoin was that the network would be 'decentralized' and owned by 'everyone' and 'no one'.    However, it is very clear that there are two classes of people in the Bitcoin world.  Those who 'own the network' and those who 'pay to use the network'.    What I mean by this is that only miners profit directly from the operation of the network.  Everyone else pays the miners through inflation or fees.   Mining is now centralized to the point that 3 or 4 people could colude and control the majority of the hashing power.   These people own the network, everyone else pays to play.

It will always be the case (with Bitcoin) that specialization will tend make mining profitable only to a few and  benefit from economics of scale.

Look; it's obvious that as mining gets more difficult, less people will participate in mining.  But the way the free market works is that any who want to compete, can.  If 3 or 4 people "own" the network, a company with startup capital can enter the market freely.  Right now people are competing for the block reward.  That's going to decrease.  The increase will come from fees.  If bitcoin becomes highly popular, then the fee reward should eventually outpace the block reward.  This encourages others to enter the mining arena.

Just because Joe Blow with $200 can't play, doesn't mean the network is centralized.

Also, the idea that only miners profit from the network is wrong.  Many people enjoy reduced costs of transmitting money as a result of bitcoin, and thus profit greatly.

Unfortunately, the cost of running / operating the network isn't entirely born by the miners.  Every user is providing bandwidth and mirroring services and these users are not reimbursed in any way.  Miners, because they are centralized, will tend to favor more centralization, larger blocks, etc until all aspects of the network grow beyond what can be truly decentralized.

Users are not required to mirror the blockchain; lite clients exist.  And of course miners want to centralize themselves, but the thing stopping them from doing that is competition.  Monopolies don't exist for long in truly free markets.

I contend that an ideal crypto-currency should allow everyone who owns it to profit from its use and that owning & mining should be equally profitable.   This would be accomplished by paying dividends to owners from 50% of the transaction fees.    From a capital perspective, owning such a crypto-currency would be just as profitable as mining such a crypto-currency.   Competition would drive the ROI of investing in ASIC/etc to the dividend rate and no lower because if given the choice between buying ASIC for $1M or buying $1M of the crypto-currency both would expect the same rate of return yet going the ASIC route is far more risky.

The effect of a dividend-paying crypto-currency is that it would be even less inflationary that Bitcoin.  If you remove half of the inflation bitcoin has experienced then the total value of everyone's bitcoins would be almost 2x.  If there was profit to be made by holding Bitcoins then their value would be over 2x.

By all means, get one going.  If it's better than bitcoin, it will flourish.  If not, it will fail.

Hey guys I just called Gary and he said the reason why the sample chips are stuck in customs is because Avalon put the value for them at $3 and we were just unlucky and were part of their random check. He also said Avalon should not just put them as "IC Chips" and so that's why customs thought it was fishy. I told him that they were basically un-programmed ASIC Chips and he said that's what he needs to clear with customs. So it should be cleared by tomorrow.

Any word?
Anyone else getting that queezy feeling in your gut about Ragin?

He sure spends a lot of time gathering funds, but once he has them.... crickets.

I think a lack of updates is discomforting anywhere.  The updates have been coming as new stuff pops up, but we're in a holding pattern for chips, and Raging's in-house production can't really do anything until they get sample chips to test stuff.

That being said, an update (even "Nothing new guys, sit tight") would make me feel better, especially since the bitcoin community has been rocked by so many scams.

That's not true at all. BKKCoins has been releasing designs and updates for weeks now, long before he recieved any sample chips.

If Ragin is going to use an existing design, and press boards once that design is complete, that should be announced.

That would be better located in Raging's assembly service thread, which it is.  He's going to be making Avalon clones and K16s/K64s I believe.  Look for his assembly thread, it's outlined there.  AFAIK raging can't do anything until he gets sample chips and/or BKK finishes his design.  I just want to know things are moving along.
615  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: July 04, 2013, 06:09:38 PM
Here's my thoughts.  If ASICminer retains X% of the mining network, then he will maintain X% of the reward.  Rival made some points about increasing your competitors so you can gain more market share.  But if the network increased by Y, then ASICminer needs to increase their hashing power by Y * X% to maintain X%.  This is just to stay even in the mining realm.

In fact, the only way ASICminer can increase their dividends is to sell hardware.  If they increase their network percentage, they risk pushing the value down.  They can't increase their dividends by mining, since they've capped themselves at the max % of network rewards they can make without causing a 51% scare.  Which makes me think they will be increasingly present in the mining hardware market.

618  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Work in progess] Burnins Avalon Chip to mining board service on: July 03, 2013, 07:13:06 PM
So in short for all those who think about applying some more radiators on top - if it says don't do something, it means don't do something. You can do that if you want, but it's your problem if something goes bad.

Nobody suggested doing this. Question was, is it possible to stack them top towards top, with heatsinks on each bottom  side.

Why not stack them according to the design?  The front page shows a schematic.

Are there people here who got their tracking number on Saturday, but their order is still not showing on DHL site?
I got the email with tracking notification this weekend on Saturday 29 June, but I can not see my tracking number in DHL. What shall I do?

Wait.  Tracking numbers are created when the shipping label is printed.  DHL won't see it until they scan it in.  That can take a day or two sometimes.
620  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Work in progess] Burnins Avalon Chip to mining board service on: July 03, 2013, 09:32:26 AM

Wow, didnt know that its so featurerich... and all 4! power connectors are for cables that goes horizontal right? The left 3 for sure but im not sure with the right one. But i guess the second right one would be the one to use with a ATX-PSU.

Do you mean the green power connector goes with ATX? I wonder how to split power from ATX to multiple boards, like 14? What additional cables/connectors do we need?

No, the connector on the left side of the green connector. Im not sure what the green connectors cable would look like.
You would most probably split the power from a psu via y-cables.

Putting a heat sink on top will restrict the airflow over the pcb. The pcb has internal copper layers ('ground' is usually designed as a plane) which act as heat spreaders as well.

Do you say the other side of the pcb needs airflow too? I intended to force the airflow from the fans through the heatsinks only to maximize cooling. Do i have to rethink this?

The chips are designed to release heat out of the bottom, and putting a heatsink on the top of the chips can restrict convection and cause the chips to overheat.  The top of the board doesn't need additional air flow AFAIK.  The fan on the heatsink should create enough airflow around the board that all you need on top is convection for the other parts.  That is, don't cover it up, but no need for anything else.

So it doesnt need airflow but then you say the fan will make enough air. But what will happen when i force the airflow ONLY through the heatsink. You know like creating a tunnel. I would like to take 2 miners with heatsink and put them together tight with the heatsinks. Then put a fan on the side and somehow build a tunnel that only allows the air flowing between the ribs of the heatsinks. Im not sure yet what material would be best for this but i think it would greatly effect the cooling because i think otherwise most of the air is going useless the easier way.
So would that be possible or is it needed to put a little bit of the airflow to flow above the other sides of the boards.

The avalon chips will certainly be ok with bottom cooling only, even if the top side is completely insulated. They are designed to release the heat via the bottom. But there might be other components on the board, which might need a slight breeze, to prevent them from getting quite hot (voltage regulators for example).

Actually I think people were warned to specifically not insulate the top of the chip.  I can't remember where, but I distinctly remember reading that a heatsink on top of the chip can actually cause damage.  Maybe that was because the pressure of the heatsink can cause chips to come loose from the board or something, but I do remember being warned not to try to exhaust heat out of the top.
