at the end of the day there will need to be a given return on hardware investment for mining to be "profitable".
Just because you aren't earning 1%/day return does NOT mean mining is not profitable.
Say somebody spends $1000 on a asic unit and is able to earn $5/day. by almost all other measures that is a GREAT return as it is $1825/year. Even halfing that it is still not that bad at all.
Of course the lifecycle of the units and resale value will greatly determine what that minimum profitablility level is.

WTF IS THE MH/S!?!?!
my guess is 1000-1200 I can get 600 when pushing my 7950 at 1150/500...

I did some testing earlier today on my 2x 7950 rig.
Here is what I got at various clock speeds. the "LTC" column represents k/hash as shown on the pool website and reaper combined for both cards.
Clock Mem Volt LTC Temps 850 1200 0.950 1050 55/60 900 1250 0.993 1080 58/65 950 1300 1.037 1140 62/67 1000 1300 1.062 1200 65/68 1050 1350 1.118 1250 67/73

"can only be bought from a few companies"
Considering AMD is the ONLY company that makes decent GPU mining hardware.. a few almost sounds like a good thing......

Convince thepiratebay to implement for-pay private trackers where seeders get paid a cut. (All in bitcoin, obviously)
mining with bandwidth.. interesting idea....

Great recommendations, and really good discussion in this thread. I really appreciate the help. Edit: Also, I won't make another thread for such a small question, but anyone know where a person could buy motherboard standoffs locally? I'm in a good sized city, but I don't have a Frye's or any big box type computer store near me. And I doubt Best Buy sells those, but anywhere I'm not thinking of? amazon has them.. $5 for 15

you can mine simultaneously, you MUST run a different instance of the miner for each coin though.

if there is a demand for a product, SOME company will come in to fill it. If btc-e shut down, maybe mtgox would fill in the void, or maybe vircurex.. or some other new exchange eager to take some percentage of every transaction.

As I stated in the op, you have to bypass the ocl error check to use a large amount of memory as with the 7950. Coblee has stated he will not remove cgminers error checking.
who is the author of bfgminer? That is what I use for ltc mining on my 7770's.. I wonder if he would be interested in doing a little ltc fork without error checking?

For the next 12h there will be NO FEE woot! I like this idea of a little promotion. Time to move my 3rd rig back to ltc from btc.

Mining isn't a job bro, so don't treat it like one and you'll be just fine.
in 2 years i am mining i earned about 3.5 times more than with my day time job, so i definetly cosider it a job... bro its addictive, u start with 300mh card and end up with 15gh farm.. not having to pay for electricity really boosted my earnings, but with those asics im troubled what to use my farm for now. if difficulty realy goes in the sky, im sure aint gonna force my rigs if it doesnt pay even for maintenence, and im sure others wont also. and about btc being all mined up, can anyone tell me please whats a calculated last block time? thanks there is no such thing as a "last block" it is just that the coins created by blocks slowly decreases over time.

do you care about noise? the power supply you choose can make a HUGE difference in how loud the computer is.
i had a 850w thermaltake smartpower unit that was great and put out what i needed for 2x 7950's and an i5, but good lawd it was loud....
I replaced it with a corsair ax850 which is nearly silent with the same load.
that said.. an ax850, xfx 850w (80+ gold) or a seasonic 850w (80+ gold) power supply will do great. Those are all made by seasonic anyway which is an extremely high quality oem.

To bring this back from the dead....
I recently build a 'wood board' computer and this is what I used:
12x24" shelf. Only $5 each, and looks a lot better than a standard plywood board and a lot less risk for splinters. Also an ATX motherboard legnth wise almost perfectly fits the width of the board.
6-32 sized threaded inserts. these go into holes drilled in the board and provide the threads for the motherboard standoffs.
plastic L shaped shelf supports. This goes on one+ sides of the power supply to help support its weight if you want to store the board in a non-horizontal fashion
velcro. This goes between the power supply and the board (hard drive as well if you so desire). This will of course fasten down the components and keep them from sliding around.
Ive not yet gotten around yet to finding a good solution for the wobbly video cards.. this rig only uses 7770's so its not a big issue.

I have looked around and cannot seem to find out why I cannot get reaper to connect to pool-x.eu. What do people have for that one?
did you make sure to NOT include the http:// or www.? Did you verify the correct port number has been inputted? Did you verify the correct EXACT spelling of the username/worker? Did you verify the correct exact spelling of the worker password?

dangit tacotime... if ANYBODY on this forum deserves donations thrown at them on a daily basis.. you are one of the few!
Great guide. I am now rocking lowish memory speeds (like 500-600ish, not sure how some folk are getting 200...)

If LTC keeps growing in popularity it is only a matter of time before it gets the neato services that BTC has enjoyed.

why would that guy mine for bitcoins in the woods ? sometimes you just do things because you can.. maybe he's going gopro style on the btc world?
