6001  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] HydroMining Bonds on: June 05, 2012, 06:58:36 AM
It is a bond like stated above. The power costs may not seem to matter, but  if I could no longer afford to mine because of high power costs it would matter. I would not invest with someone who had low profit margins with the block reward dropping to 25 soon.

Exactly!  A bond is essentially a loan.  Even if you trust the issuer to continue paying even if the venture is losing money, there is much less default risk if the venture is profiting well.

my power cost at .0208/Kwh.

How?  Is that a commercial rate?

Comments are welcome.

Will this be a corporation, LLC, or sole proprietorship?

Looking forward to the details, like how much capacity, what type of mining equipment and facility, your qualifications, etc.
6002  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: www.btcbalance.net - View your balance easily online. on: June 05, 2012, 05:57:29 AM
BTCBalance doesn't show my address as having any bitcoins, but blockexplorer blockchaininfo are showing a balance...

BTCBalance uses BlockExplorer API, and BlockExplorer is several hundred blocks behind at the moment.  Could that possibly be the reason?
6003  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Any good bitcoin offer/survey sites? on: June 05, 2012, 05:29:12 AM
Scratch that, turns out mini bits was all I needed. I pay someone puzzle pirates Poe, they send me bit coins via minibits, problem solved.

Sweet!  Glad I could help.
6004  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: USD between MTGOX <--> DWOLLA on: June 05, 2012, 05:24:33 AM
There are a few decent arbitrage opportunities for anyone with Dwolla USDs credited at either Instersango or Camp BX:

Lots [err... a handful] of people selling at these other exchanges at lower than market, just to be able to get access to their Dwolla funds sooner.

off topic but how do i reply with quotes!!!! !!!!

Over to the right hand side, click Quote.

when im selling my bitties at intersango which command would you recomend, is the good till cancelled one ok?

Yup.  If it doesn't fill in a few minutes, you can cancel it and place another.

and what do i do simply look at, the top price on the buy/sell list depending what i need and write that instead of "use market price"

Yup,  Look at the order book, and match up the quantity you want to sell with the bids.

e.g., if the book shows:

Rate    Quantity
--------  ---------------
3.51         5
3.50         3
3.49         7
3.48         8

So then let's say you want to sell 10 BTC.  So you then set the price for your sell order of 10 at 3.49.

It will trade five at 3.51, three at 3.50 and the remaining two at 3.49.  And boom, you're done.

City Index FX strategist Kara Ordway said virtual money could easily be a tradeable commodity not unlike the Australian or US dollar, once market demand and supply was established.

It's not already being traded or theres no supply or demand already?

Not at levels where liquidity is sufficient.  A few hours ago there was a ~100K USD buy (~20K BTC) and the price rose 2%.  Imagine what a $1 million USD buy would do.

Civil liability can be difficult to enforce

Especially when you have no legal claim against any profits.  Can you tell me what legal entity you own shares of?
6008  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Any good bitcoin offer/survey sites? on: June 05, 2012, 04:38:38 AM
I'm trying to find out if there's a place that lets you do those offers/surveys and turn it into bitcoins. Doesn't need to be a great site, just one that functions and pays out.

They are mostly only very tiny fractions, not comparable to levels you'ld get with swagbucks, I'ld presume.

Here's probably the best list:

I feel like I could earn $5 worth of points

I'm not familiar with these sites you've described.  Would the points be transferrable, perhaps?  e.g., if you have a coupon that I could use, I might trade my bitcoins for that coupon.  You'ld probably only find a trade if the coupon were offered at a discount, but perhaps you'ld find the rate doing that is better than through any existing bitcoin related freebie system.

Also, if you need just a small amount and have a PayPal, there's:

I don't know OS X but since the bitcoin directory for linux starts with a period (.bitcoin) perhaps that Mac release used the same directory name and thus is not showing in the gui?  Can you use a shell?

 e.g.
   $  ls -la ~/Library/Application Support

or try this perhaps?
    $ find ~ -type f -name "wallet.dat"

He said regulators such as the RBA and the US Federal Reserve had to think of new ways to tax and manage virtual currencies as it became a valuable global commodity.

The Federal Reserve is responsible for ensuring that a competing monetary system can be taxed?

Ya, so how about a new record, 25% higher than the previous record a few days ago.

18,555 transactions in 24 hours.

Just blew away the previous record by about 10% - 46,684 Transactions, according to:

6013  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [2 BTC Reward] How to find out, which address send me bitcoins via an API on: June 05, 2012, 01:00:05 AM
Rightnow i think the most important feature i'm looking for is a notification when a new payment occurs.
Blockchain.info uses this for the wallets hosted on their servers.

Is there a way to get bitcoind to send notifications or start a command when there is a new transaction, on my linux box?

Once one is in the memory pool? (i.e. on 0/unconfirmed?)

Or are you asking about after it confirms?  If so:

I believe this will do 0/unconfirmed:

Or perhaps:

Im really just trying to find the quickest and most cost effective way of moving by bits around Wink The paypal idea is definitely one i will look into the only thing putting me off is again the time frame involved - usually 3 days to transfer to uk bank.

You don't know anyone in real life who would take a PayPal transfer from you and in exchange they give you cash?

Does anyone know if a MP prepaid card can be used in other countries, the same way my american visa will automatically transfer US dollars into foreign devices ?

It probably can, but would need to have the KYC checks completed (e.g., registered it online, gave your name, addy, SSN, etc.)
6016  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help With MtGox transfers to the UK on: June 04, 2012, 11:45:51 PM
i presume that the person involved would have to have an mtgox a/c

Yup, they are essentially transfers from one Mt. Gox account to another (account-to-account, A2A) except that you don't need to know the destination account to use them.

Here's a little more info on how Redeemable Codes work:

just to make one thing clear those redeem codes are they only to be used at mtgox??? im still baffled, sorry! Tongue  i presume that the person involved would have to have an mtgox a/c and then it would be up to them how they withdrew their money? is that right?

The Mt. Gox USD codes have a little more portablity (e.g., they can be used at BitInstant, AurumXChange, #bitcoin-otc, and a few additional places) versus the Mt. Gox GBP codes. They are essentially a bearer code, anyone who knows the code can redeem it and use the funds to buy bitcoins or to withdraw.  So be careful with what you do with the code.  If you aren't going to use it right away, maybe redeem it yourself so you get the credit back in your Mt. Gox account.  (There are no fees for creating or redeeming the codes).

One of the reasons someone else might want the GBP code is if they are planning on buying bitcoins or adding to their Mt. Gox GBP wallet (for later buying or withdrawing GBPs eventually).   Right now there is a significant price difference between BTC/GBP and BTC/USD.  At a BTC/GBP of £3.50 and a GBP/USD exchange rate of 1.5384 means the equivalent BTC/USD is at $5.38.   Current spot is $5.25 USD, so you'ld probably need to offer your GBP code at a little discount.  Maybe offer to sell it at the rate of £3.40 BTC/GBP if you need to.
6017  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Warning Re: MtGox/Dwolla -- $$ Disappeared. on: June 04, 2012, 11:30:05 PM
MtGox needs a government issued photo id and a recent utility bill to verify the account. How expensive can it be to get a utility bill from you friend/neighbhor..stranger?, and buy a fake driver's license (for US residents/citizens)? It's not like they are going to call and verify. Most likely they just need an official looking utility bill where details can be photoshoped in Wink)))

That's a darn good way to get your funds frozen for good.
6018  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help With MtGox transfers to the UK on: June 04, 2012, 10:08:25 PM
As for intersango, my point was that mtgox snaps them up whilst Intersango can take hours but in my experience days to close an order......

An order book lists bids (buy orders) and asks (sell orders).  Here's a visual of these:

To get an order to execute immediately, you put in a sell order that is at the price shown for the buy order.  If you are trying to buy a larger amount than the top bid quantity, then you need to go with a lower price even so that your entire sell order gets taken.  It's that simple.  Your order will complete in a minute at most, in most instances.   If you put a sell order and it didn't sell, then your price was too high.  That's the only possible explanation.

There was one interesting point you raised stephen and that was the possibilty of using Ping it. I myself looked into this. I got a gox redeem code but then was stumped - Im still unclear as to how to use them effectively?

You need to found someone that wants to give you PingIT and take your Mt. Gox GBP redeemable code in exchange.

Here's a channel you can start.
 - http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#bitcoin-otc-eu

But, ... you want to be able to trust the counterparty isn't going to steal your code (by doing a trade and never delivering).  So only deal with those who have authenticated with -otc and have a good trust history.    -OTC authentication requires GPG.  There's a little bit of work to do that, here's a guide:
 - http://wiki.bitcoin-otc.com/wiki/GPG_authentication#Third-party_guides

One thing about PingIT, I don't know if it is instant though, for a non-Barclay's customer.  I think it takes at least a day for the funds to clear.

Or maybe you can find someone nearby willing to trade for cash, in-person (face-to-face)?
6019  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Warning Re: MtGox/Dwolla -- $$ Disappeared. on: June 04, 2012, 09:51:16 PM
I transferred money from Dwolla to MTGox on the 27th. Dwolla shows it cleared today but the funds haven't been added to my MTGox account. I have both accounts as verified so I don't know what the fuck is going on. I opened a ticket with MTGox 2 hours ago, still waiting on "assignment to help desk operator"

edit: 3 hours, still waiting for assignment to help desk operator. unbelievable.

Ok, for that, you used as the source of funds not your Dwolla balance, but a transfer from your bank.  So it hasn't been a week or whatever that Mt. Gox has had your money, they don't get the funds until Dwolla clears it (which you said just happened today).

So now, you are aware that for Mt. Gox to credit your Mt. Gox account with those funds that you will have to provide them with a photo id (in color).  Until you do so, those funds from Dwolla will sit in limbo.  Here's the next step to get your funds credited:

You introducing a system that imposes a form of taint does nothing to prevent theft but does make using Bitcoin a hassle for those who are innocent.

Therefore I do not support this and will vigorously reject any movement towards this initiative and any like it.

Would you consider a proposal that involved no taint to be like it?

I'm not sure what you are describing so can't answer that.

Would you consider a proposal that does nothing to prevent theft but reduces the benefits to the thief (without taint) to be like it?

I'm trying to develop a sense of the philosophy behind BC that you hold.

Here's a proposal that would be acceptable.  Let's say Bitcoinica claims coins are stolen.  I trust Bitcoinica was honest in that claim.  The very first spend from the thief happens to be with me, in exchange for, oh ..., say Liberty Reserve.  I stiff the thief by not sending the Liberty Reserve, but I forward to an escrow the bitcoins I received until Bitcoinica and the thief work things out.

That's acceptable.  I will take any heat I receive as a result.

It is possible the person I am trading with was not actually the thief though.  Perhaps that party I am dealing with exchanged cash with the thief and got the private key in exchange.  That would be stupid to do and I would argue that the reason for transacting in that manner was more likely than not an effort to launder the stolen money to me [edit: transact in a deceptive manner with me].  And that wouldn't be acceptable to me.

Also possible is that in my hypothetical scenario, Bitcoinica wasn't actually defrauded.  That's why I'ld send funds to an escrow so that further details could be brought into the light.

That's the philosophy I hold.

[Update: I probably didn't win any brownie points with that response.  But I did mean to qualify that as something I'ld find acceptable to do only on 100% (not 99.99999%, but 100%) pure coins that were claimed to have been stolen.]
