Good morning Krogoth!

49 - Kryptowerk

Thanks again for your generous raffle.

[...]
Anyway, I can see that there's no more crash, no more correction, no more bear market. But your generosity continues! Cheesy
Indeed, time to update OP, haha - but let's be real, there's gonna be a lot more ups and downs on the horizon before we reach Jupiter.

Good points all around...but until we pass the all time high of close to 70k.....to me we are in the negative bearish turf....so once we pass that I will change my tone and perhaps be more generous  Wink

If you guys really want to up your security to the next level there are much better options than Trezor that are also FOSS:

Foundation Devices Passport
Blockstream Jade
SeedSigner

Even Coldcard is better, even though their codebase is "source verifiable" which is technically not FOSS.

Trezor is super solid don't get me wrong. I love them and still recommend that hardware wallet to newbies that are taking self-custody for the first time, but if you have been in Bitcoin for awhile, the next level is a must IMO.

Having a device that never touches the internet and generates your private key completely offline is just another layer of security that I wouldn't pass up.
Cool devices you mentioned, do you have any experience with any of them? Blockstream Jade seems like great value for the buck. - However it has a built-in camera and bluetooth which I am not sure if it isn't a security concern.

@krogothmanhattan Do you already have the Tresor 3 in hand? What's your experience in comparison to Model 1?

I have yet to receive mine and to be honest I will leave in package as it is for part of my collection of wallets

Sorry for slightly OP, but I have to jump on the Ledger-bashing-train.
I had a bunch of negeative experiences over the last almost decade now with their devices.
Right now I can only say I hate Ledger and here is why:
- discontinued hardware support for older devices (buy the new one - money grab company)
- data leak exposing all customer data including phone numbers, full name, address etc. From a company supposed to provide crypto security. UGH
- horrible experience with their ledger nano app: balances were displayed as missing or completely wrong (I was a multimillionaire on paper for a few minutes, too, lol). - Only fully resetting with the passphrase worked - how tf is that a secure device?
- They have their "back-up" backdoor upgrade which is highly debateable and mostly frowned upon by any security experts in the crypto space.

That said I have had a good time with the Trezor line and looking forward to try the new Version 3.
I have a %-OFF voucher, not sure if it only works for one device or if I can buy several. If anyone is interested in a Trezor 3 for quite a few % off, send me PM I will try tomorrow if it works for more than one item.
@krogothmanhattan If you still need one send me a PM.

Couldnt agree more with ya on this....I am a Trezor man thru and thru. Thanks for the offer but I already ordered the Trezor 3.  Cheesy

Although its not guaranteeing you a clean computer, its a nice alarm so to speak when swept.
It's not guaranteeing you anything. A wallet being emptied does not tell you what's wrong, which software is responsible, when the malware was installed etc. A smart thief wouldn't trade their unknown access with $10, and I strongly recommend you to not expect hackers to be dumb. They may wait until you deposit a decent amount of money, or perhaps valuable files.

Prevention over cure. You should just be aware of your computer's security, and friendly suggestion; don't rely on security through obscurity.

Nobody said it was guaranteeing you anything but its something to bait em with. And yes there are dumb malware that will sweep anything with btc on it. And of course who said I would deposit more! Jeees!

The password is over a 100 symbols long...i just punched on the keyboard randomly.  Cheesy
The only thing a 100 char long password used for BIP38 does for you is to make your work entering it in the future for decryption a nightmare, more so when it is random!

It does not provide you with the security you think it does because in BIP38 algorithm the password is fed into scrypt KDF to derive a 32 byte key which means when you use a bigger than 32 byte password to derive a 32 byte key, your security still depends on the 32 byte size not the much bigger password (eg. 100 byte).

Theoretically to brute force your password, one would just skip the first step (ie to derive a key using scrypt that needs to iterate 100 bytes) and just brute forces the 32 byte derived key.
Realistically since 32 bytes is 256 bit and impossible to brute force, this is impossible to pull off.

Exactly....impossible to pull off.....thats how good BIP38 is with a good passpword!

the BIP39 encrypted key have been exposed online for almost 7 years now...
It's BIP38, not BIP39. I know, because I've made the same mistake in the past....

Quote
The password is over a 100 symbols long...
Given that $1000 was not enough to crack just 6 characters in 2 years (even after giving hints), this doesn't really prove anything. It's probably easier to "guess" the private key itself than guessing your 100 characters.

Let em try...that stamp will stay there forever then. Crypto encryprion da best!

Since we are talking about Brute force...take a look at this stamp I designed back in 2017. Its loaded with 0.02BTC and the public key and the BIP38 encrypted key have been exposed online for almost 7 years now...BTC is still on it! The password is over a 100 symbols long...i just punched on the keyboard randomly.  Cheesy  https://www.crypto-stamps.com/

One other thing I also do is, I place a non encrypted Bitcoin private key and load it with $10 in BTC....if my computer were ever exposed to any malware sweeping BTC, this would be swept and I would be alerted. Although its not guaranteeing you a clean computer, its a nice alarm so to speak when swept.

629  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Crack seed phrases with brute force? on: October 24, 2023, 07:30:03 PM
Why not have a seed with a passphrase.

    MNEMONIC SEED = WALLET A

MNEMONIC SEED AND PASSPHRASE= WALLET B

Wallet A would be the bitcoin addresses that would show if ever brute forced.

I would place a few Sats in it so in case Wallet A is ever brute forced open and swept

then I would have ample enough time to remove any BTC from wallet B...HOPEFULLY.

The question is, Wallet B is a hidden wallet...so even if someone stole your seed they

will not be aware of Wallet B.

I'm quite happy to be able to say I don't have such a thing Tongue I like fungibility of money, not the opposite Wink

At least that should be a proof that his accont was not hacked or sell.

I am curious about how he lost his key, that may be a new thread for it, i mean only if he want to tell us that history.

No keys were lost...as I explained to him on the post before this one...these wallets have not been deleted....just reset the trezors and started afresh...i have many seeds stored from past wallets...just don't know which ones are for these....so wanted to start with one dedicated just for sigs.

Other than that....time will prove it I who I say I am....we shall revisit this post in the future if need be  Cheesy

In the meanwhile...please join my free weekly raffle here for a Ballet wallet loaded with some Sats

I don't get it though: you've been here almost as long as me. You must have seen this by now:
You should never delete a wallet.

Haha...good quote from Satoshi...these wallets have not been deleted....just reset the trezors and started afresh...i have many seeds stored from past wallets...just dont know which ones are for these....so wanted to start with one dedicated just for sigs.

No worries....time will tell if its me or not. I am no rush. My actions will speak louder than words mate.  Wink

You must have some old addy that you can use to prove you're still the same person, right? It doesn't hurt to be thorough when it comes to staking addresses.

Trezor > Ledger from a UX and software perspective, by a mile

Gotta agree...always a Trezor man here for cold storage besides my trusted paper wallets that is.

As for cell phone hot wallet, Mycellium has always been my favorite

In time my actions will prove who I say I am...thats all I can say. Roll Eyes

Edit: I am also confirming it is I krogothmanhattan by using my krogoth (Cellphone only account) to confirm it is who I say I am. Hopefully that account is not hacked either  Wink

You can confirm it here https://tools.qz.sg/

Ok, you have proved that you control the address, but how do we know that the account hasn't been hijacked?

Could you sign a message with any of addresses you have used in the past, stating that you are using the new address? What about 1FsLxbxsgz9jzvrKFyLkNz24x6ENRVFzNg or 1GDjqcTyvNa37CwMaDvh9buL6Qd1SjbYKG?

No I cannot prove that it hasn't been hijacked at all. Those addy from the past were on other wallets that I have not used in many years and god only knows where they are in my systems or storage. I have created this new one with a newly reset Trezor that I am dedicated striclty for this post after I was asked the same question that you have just posted.

So the only way to know that I am who I say I am is to let time pass and follow my usual movements on the collectables section that I have been doing for years. Other than that, you have no reason to trust me at all. Cheers

Hey krogoth, if you are interested in collectibles shaped as wallets, I have a Ledger Nano X branded by Betnomi. I won 3 such wallets at their raffles but I don't need all 3. If you want to see some pictures you can do it here. The wallet from those images is unsealed, but I am talking here about one which is sealed.

I used the unsealed wallet to check its hardware integrity and the result was that the wallet is not tampered.

If you are interested, please let me know.

Hi Gazeta....Thanks for reaching out....but will need to pass as I might have one stored somewhere. I really lost track of what I have and don't thru the years. I guess I need to find the time to dig thru my stuff. Also ledger kinda left a bad taste in my mouth when the announced their idea of storing the private keys as well. And yes, I know I will not be using it ever but that idea they came out to offer has stained them in my eyes.

   But thanks again regardless.
