622  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is there any cryptocurrency which can be mined with a laptop? on: November 20, 2017, 10:29:06 PM
Mining with a laptop can be done but results will not be satisfactory.
My advice should not be using a laptop as it will making the laptop hot faster which resulted in the laptop being damaged.

Unless it's a throw away. I have two old netbooks from the early hackintosh days that I will take to the local coffee shop with me, plug in, and let mine Bytecoin for free because why not?
623  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: ASIC or GPU mining? on: November 20, 2017, 10:25:22 PM
GPU mining income is way more stable. RX470 were making ~$1 per day a year ago, still making $1.5 per day now. As for ASICs, just go to forum threads about Antminer D3 and you will see how happy people were in the beginning making $100 day and how pissed off, getting $5 per day with no chance of ROI. Much shorter warranty on ASICs is another factor to consider.

It's very unpleasant. I would not want to be in a similar situation. In other side, I see that GPU mining has more advantages than ASICs. Thanks for your advice.

This also. You never know. I thought that the D3 I ordered from Bitmain (arriving end of the month) was a slam dunk and that I'd made a mistake overpaying for an L3+ from a third party seller on Amazon. The L3+ is still bringing in around $18-25/day consistently, the D3 has gone from around $150/day when I ordered it to $5/day and I don't even have it yet...

Point is it is all a crapshoot, and just make the calls that make the most sense to you. The upside to GPUs is that you can start small and expand as you go, so the upfront cost can be less. I would also point out that the D3 is still profitable, it will just take a lot longer to reach your ROI (especially once the November and December batches ship), but even at $5/day with the stock miner at stock settings, it's still profiting $2-3/day on Dash. That's not a lot and will take around two years at that price to ROI, but depending on when better X11 miners are released and also how DASH and other X11 coins hold or go up/down in value, you still can recoup faster (example: if you are using Nicehash and had been getting paid out in Bitcoin all last month, everything you got paid is now worth twice as much if you held it).

It's all about strategies, but yes, the D3 turned out to be a poor choice, I really wish I'd just bought a second L3+, but again, live and learn. GPUs I bought that I thought would take 8 months to ROI have already done it in 3, others not as quickly. Just don't put money in you can't afford to lose and learn as much as you can about the coins you're mining and you'll do fine. Smiley
624  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Electroneum Mining (not getting paid) on: November 20, 2017, 10:13:46 PM
Unfortunately no, my pool dashboard show i've been paid, but I have nothing in my wallet. I've checked and double checked the address is correct and that the wallet is synced

Exactly what happened with my first test payment. I'm still holding my balance in the pool until I know for sure it's sorted.
625  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Hotmine X6 miner/upgrade kit review on: November 20, 2017, 10:12:00 PM
There is a group buy sub-board in the hardware part of the forum right here. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=137.0

Huh. I thought I'd searched pretty thoroughly for where to put the thread! Any mods reading this, please feel free to move it to the group buy forum.
626  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Hotmine X5/X6 upgrade for antminer S5/S3 on: November 20, 2017, 10:10:46 PM
you are from Kiev ? You could visit their quarters to see how things are going, since they are not replying anymore

I suppose, you could take orders from all who are interested, and make shipment  - with our prepay of course

They replied to me last on Thursday. They are still replying, just slowly (it took about a week for them to get back to me, though they were quick to reply from my message through their website)...

And the new poster's offer is definitely an option but we'd have to figure out some form of escrow or other to ensure that neither he/she nor US buyers get screwed. The problem with escrow with these types of things is, well, figuring out how to do it, since he/she obviously needs the funds to pay hotmine. Not sure what the options are there, honestly, but there may be one.
627  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Hotmine X5/X6 upgrade for antminer S5/S3 on: November 20, 2017, 05:52:00 AM
(I also have several Ukrainian friends here in Portland; if we can't get a big enough order together, I could see if they know anyone who would be cool with picking up a smaller order and shipping it for us)
628  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Hotmine X6 miner/upgrade kit review on: November 20, 2017, 05:43:03 AM
I didn't realize this thread turned into a group sales one; I started another here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2425582.msg24818692#msg24818692

Figured the marketplace was the right place to put it; anyone already organizing it feel free to take over that thread as well. I'm in for either two X5s or an X5 and an X6 if someone else is putting together an order. Smiley
629  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Hotmine X5/X6 upgrade for antminer S5/S3 on: November 20, 2017, 05:35:13 AM
UPDATE--it does seem that more than a couple of us have heard that 10 pieces is the minimum, so if we can get 7 more orders we should be good.

Also again, I am totally cool with a more senior board member being the one organizing the order if it makes everyone more comfortable. I don't care, I just want the upgrades. Smiley
630  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: (Review/Guide) Hotmine X5 upgrade kit for Antminer S1/S3/S5 on: November 20, 2017, 05:30:13 AM
I made a thread in the marketplace section to discuss/plan if we get enough folks. Seems the consensus is that a 10 piece minimum will likely be required. Discussion here:

631  Economy / Computer hardware / Hotmine X5/X6 upgrade for antminer S5/S3 on: November 19, 2017, 03:19:29 AM
This came out of a couple of discussion threads, but as many of us have had little luck attempting to order upgrades from Hotmine, I thought if we got enough people together to make a large enough order they might be able to ship to the US. Anyone else interested? I am happy to coordinate this, but since I really only want two X5s I am equally happy to let someone else do it if they have a larger order they want to place.  Post in here or PM me if you're interested and I can write them back and see how large an order we'd need!

Info on the upgrades (they also sell fully assembled X6 miners):

632  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Electroneum Mining (not getting paid) on: November 19, 2017, 03:11:13 AM
It was pretty stable for the most part, only the beginning was rough. But right now most pools are having issues again. I didn't even know that suprnova has an ETN pool, just switched my miners to it, let's see whether it's any good. The front-end is sluggish, but at least it's accepting my shares (both electroneum.space and hashparty aren't working for me at all right now).

Can you even see the frontend? If so, post a link? I just get a white screen when I try to go to it...
633  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Electroneum Mining (not getting paid) on: November 19, 2017, 03:05:46 AM
You should use more well known Electroneum pools. Also make sure you are reaching the PAYMENT THRESHOLD. I stay away from suprnova as much as possible because their website's user interface looks really bad. Such a hassle and non-intuitive to use.

I've had excellent luck with their Monacoin, Zencoin, bitcoinZ, and Einsteinium pools. Their Expanse pool had a payout problem that I think was resolved, can't remember (it wasn't for a lot). Their electroneum pool is the first real bad problem I've had with them, so I'm not judging them solely on it.
634  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Number of fans on: November 19, 2017, 01:28:40 AM
Longevity mostly. Single fan cards aren't designed to run hot 24/7, so if you plan on overclocking and mining, double are your best call. Triple are ok too, but IMO not worth the increase in price.

I do have 3 single fan 1060s that work fine, though they are metal cased and the enclosure has fans blowing through them to the exhaust, so that may make a difference (I did notice that when one of the fans was pointed askew, one of the 1060s did overheat). If you are doing an open set up or have a well cooled case, single are fine, but if heat is at ALL a problem for your rig, stick to double or triple.
635  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is "whattomine.com" owned by Nicehash?? ALwasy on TOP but this scam pays shit on: November 19, 2017, 01:24:40 AM
Nicehash do exactly as advertised. Never had any issues at all with them. The payouts were always within a reasonable margin compared to whattomine and they are almost never on top as it calculates fees too, which are harsh on the small miners.

For GPU, yes. For ASICS, depends. The L3+ is almost constantly more profitable on Nicehash than anywhere else according to whattomine.

This is a clarification, not a complaint. Nicehash pays out quite well for my L3.
636  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What should I mine with this server? on: November 19, 2017, 12:54:13 AM
If you can find a miner that works with it, point it at whatever cpu friendly coin you like. Chances are next to nothing that it will end up worth anything, but who knows? You could end up with some useless penny coins or the next monero.

(Note that I am not posing that as a 50/50 chance or anything, it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY, but it IS possible).

Or turn the server to folding at home or some other distributed computing process that has some scientific use, you won't get paid but you'll be helping...
637  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Building Cheap Miners : My "Secret" on: November 19, 2017, 12:45:44 AM

At the time that I got them they were a much better deal -- they have since marked them up alot.

The full size / dual fan 1070s were $319.99 when I made the OP.

Oooh, nice! Good snag on your part.
638  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Electroneum Mining (not getting paid) on: November 19, 2017, 12:18:05 AM
My two cents--I was pool mining on Suprnova but the first payment never went through. I'm carrying the rest of the balance on my Suprnova account until it does; they said they were having server trouble a few days ago and that it was fixed now, but the transaction still can't be found in the blockchain, so not sure what's going on with that coin. Not knocking Suprnova on this one, everyone I've spoken with about Electroneum has had issues so I think it's just not a reliable mining option right now (at least as far as I can tell, I tried a couple other pools as well and no love). *shrug*

EDIT TO ADD: my link to suprnova's electroneum pool seems to go nowhere now. Hmm...
639  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: ASIC or GPU mining? on: November 19, 2017, 12:10:59 AM

Why not? All online marketplace in my country are full of propositions of constructing GPUmining farm. And, as I can see, it is very popular service. Persons don't want to risk and buy ASICs. Gamers would buy your GPUs with great pleasure, but what about ASICs.

I know that can earn more with ASICs, but if there will be panic on market, it would be hard to sell hardware...

Not to speak for the poster, but my two cents: I read that as in reference to specific coins, that if ASIC mining is available for that coin then it is the way to go because a current ASIC chip geared for a specific coin will outperform a current GPU on that same coin, pretty much always, that's what it's designed to do. For general mining, you can still profit significantly with gpus though (look at the profits from the D3 vs 4 580s, but also look at 5 580s vs an L3+; it's all relative).
640  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: ASIC or GPU mining? on: November 19, 2017, 12:07:52 AM
ASIC mining if the machine hasn't been on the market long. Otherwise, GPU, because you have much more options of what to mine as well as an upgrade path and resellable parts. Right now I wouldn't pay full price for anything other than an L3+ (and we'll see how that fares when the Nov and Dec batches go online) or maybe an S9.
