6201  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitClip: Now with concept drawings! on: August 08, 2011, 10:39:00 PM
Fixed that.
Also, there concepts. Not the final word. I would also think that just a numpad would be bad. I might see about getting a base58 keypad made or other. I was thinking we could put a camera in the back that was perma-focused at about 5 inches for scanning qr-codes (maybe even upload images for some sort of OCR? Probably not, but its an idea. I actually based the design off a blockified blackberry, reduced to a numpad and with a d-pad instead of a trackpad. I've personally seen some people type pretty fast and accurate with a numpad though, i've even seen computer keyboards that were just a numpad.
Don't have a custom base58 keyboard made.  Non-standard components will just make it more expensive.  Find an existing qwerty keyboard in the size you want, and figure out how to integrate it into the device.

A camera is an excellent idea, and I would say it's almost necessary.  Can you imagine waiting in line at a retailer while you wait for the person in front of you to painstakingly input all 34 characters of a bitcoin address, only for the checksum to not match and they have to do it all over again?  I would become rather agitated.  I wouldn't set the focus at a permanent 5" though.  Some QR codes will be much bigger than could be scanned from just 5" away (example: Meze Grill).  The camera would need to have an autofocus mechanism.

I would not buy or be interested in a device with just a numpad for input.  I absolutely abhor phones that are that way, even though I became pretty quick at entering in that method myself.  It's just plain obnoxious to type on one - enough to the point where I won't even consider purchasing a device that only has that method of data entry.
6202  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitClip: Now selling bitcoin-related backgrounds as a fundraiser! on: August 08, 2011, 10:04:35 PM
*not doing this anymore*
What does this mean?  You're done with the project?  Obviously not, or you wouldn't still be posting here...

Concept looks like a gameboy.  Tongue  And don't you need a full alphanumeric keyboard for typing out bitcoin addresses?  Going with just a number pad is a terrible idea - trying to accurately type in a full bitcoin address by pressing each key a certain number of times in a row to get the letter/number you want in the right capitalization you want sounds like a recipe for frustration and disaster.
6203  Economy / Speculation / Re: PANIC! on: August 08, 2011, 07:49:44 PM
I'm going to go ahead and suggest that the crossover potentially signals a market bottom, just because we've been in a steady downtrend for two months and this is the first time that something has changed.
The difficulty and hash rate are on different scales in that graph. There is no "crossover".
But the scales are matched to where difficulty = estimated difficulty at X MH/s.
6204  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Pre Alpha] PHPCoin on: August 08, 2011, 04:47:18 PM
It's all alphanumeric (for now).  I copy/pasted it directly from the other script I have that works just fine.   Huh  I'll keep playing around with it and see if I can figure out what the problem is.  Obviously, it's not the code, or other people would be having trouble as well.

Maybe firewall, or port forwarding?
localhost has nothing to do with that. Tongue

SgtSpike never said anything about his server architecture, so maybe you are jumping into conclusions.

All he said was that he installed phpcoin in a VPS, he never said that his bitcoind was on the same machine.

My bad.  Bitcoind is running on the same VPS, so it should connect using localhost.

Did that ip use any other account on mt gox?
This is an important question.
6207  Economy / Goods / Re: FS: Mangavox Odyssey Vintage Video Game System -38-ish BTC on: August 08, 2011, 06:29:30 AM
God I want this item! So I can throw it away a second time.....

Oh wait .. how many MH does it get again?
Throw it away?   Huh

I'm guessing... 1 MH/never.  Tongue
6208  Economy / Goods / Re: FS: Mangavox Odyssey Vintage Video Game System -22.22 BTC on: August 08, 2011, 06:09:54 AM
Ok, finally took some proper pictures!  Gallery link is below.  I'd post them here, but there's a lot of them...
http://imgur.com/a/iONO5#7uaqu

Also, price is no longer 22.22 BTC!  It'd be more like 38 BTC at today's prices...  I am listing it on eBay tomorrow, and will accept bitcoins for payment.  Starting price will be $200 + S/H, so maybe you can save some money by not buying it for $300 shipped?  Maybe it'll go higher than $275?  Not sure... the last console sold went for $215, but it didn't have the rifle or several of the games that I have.
6209  Economy / Goods / Re: 1 BTC Metal Engraved Public Key cards. Colors and custom images available! on: August 08, 2011, 05:09:43 AM
Just wanted to say, I bought a card from Noitev, and it's great!  I can't get the QR to scan for some reason, still working on if I goofed with it or if the exposed metal is too dark or reflective for it, but the card itself is fantastic.  Fits perfectly in my wallet, and looks great!  I obscured a lot of it, because I don't want to release the address to the internet.  Tongue

No, I don't buy Windows 7 keys from people with MSDN or student accounts that may be blacklisted at any time for violating the TOS.
6211  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Pre Alpha] PHPCoin on: August 06, 2011, 11:30:02 PM
I downloaded and installed the pre-alpha on a VPS.  I can't get it to communicate with my bitcoind install (throws an error regarding that after I log in to the account I registered), but another script I wrote based on bitcoin-php worked just fine.  Any ideas?

What error is that? Did you set up rightly the $btcuser and $btcpass to match your rpcuser/rpcpass?
Yes, $btcuser and $btcpass are set up correctly.  I triple-checked it.

MyBitcoin is Limited Liability Company, i.e. owners don't take any liability for company's debts. In this case maximum you can get suing them is corporation's assets.
Hence the reason I started with "If he's not incorporated..."  Wink  I wasn't sure what the registration of the business was.
6213  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mybitcoin.com Press Release #2 ? on: August 06, 2011, 08:35:56 AM
Tom Williams,

You better come up with %100 of everyone's bitcoins ASAP even if you need to buy them with your own money from one of the exchanges.

Those bitcoins are YOUR responsibility.

I can think of times in my life where I made mistakes,  and paid tens of thousands of dollars out of my own pocket to make things right.

Now it is your turn.

Do the right thing.
This x 1000.

If he's not incorporated, he can be sued for his personal assets and cash by anyone and everyone who lost bitcoins from this.  I encourage people to take this route once more of his information is revealed, and if he does not fully reimburse every single person who used the service.

wow after reading it all again you might be right bro. lol. and I might have helped Sad

who knows anymore.

Another example of perfect structure, spelling and verb-subject usage followed by perfect spelled FAKE syntax error.

"it also seems that there have been several sales and purchases in the last few days where I have not been inside ... it can not be true ... I expect all my money and bitcoins is back on my account."

This is nothing more than scare tactic to promote the YubiKey as the ONLY safe way to guard your bitcoins.

This is the moral of this whole thread.....

Hurry people, run out and buy a YubiKey from Mt.Gox LOL
Seriously?  I see plenty of errors in all three of those sentences.  Not one of them is perfect.

I also deal with a BUNCH of international people on a daily basis who have a variety of skill levels when it comes to the English language.  Some write in exactly the same "BS" broken manner as J. does.

Go find another thread to throw wild, baseless accusations around in.

6216  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Im just been attacked and robbed on my MT Gox account on: August 06, 2011, 01:03:01 AM
Hi, I checked the account history quickly, and saw the hack had nothing to do with your account email. The attacker used the reset password function and got the right reset key right after, which he used to change your password. Therefore here are my questions for you:

  • Was your email password strong too?
  • Are you sure you NEVER logged into your email from any other place than your home, on a safe computer (ie. never used that email from a mobile device, for example)
So basically, the attacker gained control of his email account, reset the MtGox password, then stole the coins.

I see this as a definite possibility, especially if his email password wasn't very strong.  As soon as that MtGox list got out, his email address was out there too.  Someone may have brute-forced (or otherwise extracted) his email address password.

Isn't it true that IMAP email/passwords are sent in plaintext unless a secure connection is specified?  Maybe someone was sniffing his data when he connected to his mailserver, and retrieved his account password that way...

J., do you have a "Reset password" email from MtGox in your inbox or deleted mail folder?  It was probably fully deleted, but you never know... not that it would really solve anything, it would just give confirmation to MagicalTux's investigation.
6217  Economy / Economics / Re: When will the federal government collapse in the US? on: August 05, 2011, 10:05:11 PM
There is no 'never' option because it doesn't make sense if you know one bit about history. Empires rise and fall, nothing lasts forever. Of course it could be way after 2025 that it collapses. And it will always be due to an unexpected event, not some artificial accounting construct like a debt limit (though it could set things in motion).

Then I'll treat the "2020-2025" option as the "2020+" option.  It's not going to collapse in the next 17 years.
6218  Economy / Economics / Re: When will the federal government collapse in the US? on: August 05, 2011, 09:32:07 PM
For the sake of this poll, since the author so biasedly decided not to include the option, I am treating 2020-2025 as the "Never" option.
6219  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Debt Deal Reached on: August 05, 2011, 05:56:26 PM
The rich can pay for the cops, the courts, and the military.

Right because you don't use any of that. I forgot about the fact that I get a police escort every time I go to the bank. Oh wait, I don't. If I want any extra security, I have to pay for that.

How many rich neighborhoods have the cops there daily making arrests vs. poor neighborhoods? Many of us live in gated communities with a private guard at the gate. We don't need the cops there.

How many court appearances are by the poor after raping, robbing or driving around drunk, etc vs. the rich? As for the military, I don't see how any of us benefits from murdering people on the other side of the planet. The only thing we need is a coastguard and a few nukes pointed at anyone thinking of launching theirs at us.

We should also include the fact that welfare keeps the masses from rioting/stealing, so the rich, who would be the ones hurt by the rioting and stealing can pay for that too.

So, pay money or get assaulted or stolen from? That's called extortion. If I want extra security, I'll pay for it, just like I already do.

I agree regarding infrastructure - corporations definitely use a large chunk compared to the average consumer.

Like I said, I don't have any employees. My infrastructure consists of a few web servers which I pay for and a computer at home, which I also pay for. Some companies may use a lot of a resources but that doesn't translate to every millionaire being the owner of one of those companies.

I can tell you have never spent any time being poor.  I assure you, the cops, courts, and military are NOT protecting the interests of the poor or the working class.
And I can assure you, they are.

See?  I can make statements without anything to back them up too!

Except that you are coming from a position of privilege and have admitted you have no experience being poor.

I've been robbed several times, the police did nothing.  The fact that the majority of arrests and court appearances are the poor is one more sign that these systems work for the rich, against the poor.

Poor criminals go to jail, rich ones pay small fines and go back to committing crimes.
I am?

I am upside-down on my mortgage.  I have student loans that I am trying to pay off.  I currently have negative monthly cash flow, despite my efforts to find extra avenues of incomes and cut items from the budget list (it's been a couple of years since I've bought a new article of clothing).

Yes, excuse me from coming from the perspective of the privileged.

Maybe the reason the poor go to jail more is that they commit more crimes?  Probably because they are more desperate, and are just doing whatever it takes to survive.  Ever think about that?

You have proven nothing so far.
6220  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I just got hacked - any help is welcome! (25,000 BTC stolen) on: August 05, 2011, 05:32:18 PM
Honestly anything is better than what we have now - which is NOTHING. Nobody is going to take BTC seriously if the currency is seen as being super risky - in the sense that there is no recourse against theft.

What you described can be useful as long as the reputation and rating system is robust and secure.

To be honest I'm surprised nobody has created any such service. It would be fine for me if it was for profit. I for one would gladly pay a percentage of the funds recovered if I can have them back. There could be a LOT of money in it for any company/organization who sets this up.

Another thing that could be useful would be a website that does in a more professional, detailed and graphical manner the same thing my C program does - track bitcoins. Once again I and no doubt many people would pay for this service. So my point is that there is a lot of opportunity for bitcoin security entrepreneurs. But sadly I get the impression that those who are intimately familiar with computer security and far more busy figuring out ways to STEAL bitcoins instead of how to legitimately EARN them. I could be over-reacting here and may be wrong on this wide generalization, but anyways, thanks for sharing your ideas mrb!
I don't see much profit in it.  There's no way that such a company could recover the funds, even if they were labeled as stolen.  And all someone would have to do is some quick laundering if they noticed some of the coins they had were on the list.  Sending them to a couple of exchanges, then back to themselves would suffice.

That said, I would like to build a tracker program with some reasonable statistical analysis.  People would be able to outsmart it, but for the most part, you would be able to see what addresses/coins are associated with a particular address.  It would be a fascinating analysis for sure.
