6281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: did ASIC ruin bitcoin ? on: August 14, 2013, 06:57:26 PM
bitcoin might die because of ASIC and be replaced by bitcoin 2.0 or some new P2P digital currency. the first of anything never lasts it either dies and goes away for good or it evolves and gets replaced by something better. either way i think the future of bitcoin as it works today looks questionable. the good ol days of GPU mining are over. hopefully the next round they figure out a way to deal with people controlling the market and having the difficulty shit on ROI.

that´s not exactly true with technologies like the internet. the internet protocol for example which is still used today was developed in 1974. there have been several attempts by companies like microsoft, ibm, apple to start new protocols, but they did not succeed.

bitcoin is a protocol. if it lasts as long as the internet protocol there is nothing to worry about.

6282  Economy / Speculation / Re: CNBC 10 Minute Media Coverage on Bitcoin on: August 14, 2013, 03:14:31 PM
He seems to be pushing for this "narco-terrorism" angle a bit much. Wtf can we assume a narco-terrorist is?
Is that his way to describe drug trafficing?
If he really wanted to stop narco-terrorism he would have kicked HSBC out of the state and arrested some of the executives for their money laundering. They are the worlds largest money laundering outfit are they not?
I really like your last point.

As for the "narco-terrorism" i'm sure he's referring to SR. What he may not realize though, and credit to Trace Mayer for this point, is that SR turns the drug game from "who has the most guns and gang members", to "who has the best product and customer service". It is literally the best possible anti narco-terrorism tool ever.

Shame they don't realize that (or don't care).

"They" could erase "narcoterrorism" instantly if they wanted to. Legalize drugs. Voila, no more money for the "narcoterrorists".

I don't think that is really "their" goal though, considering how lucrative the "war on drugs" is for "them".

6291  Economy / Speculation / Re: A lot of talk about $50, but the very bottom may be lower on: July 12, 2013, 10:46:11 AM
Just read all five pages of this thread. I feel stunned at some of the comments. Those people are exactly why the denial --> fear --> capitulation phenomenon exist, and are a major source of profit for profitable traders.

$50 won't be the bottom. However, how big the $50 bull trap is will influence how hard the drop sub-$50 is. People who think this is a scare tactic are simply not thinking rationally, although it's almost disadvantageous to try to change people's thinking around since it requires people making mistakes in order to make money in a zero-sum system.

you guys talking about 50ies...    but we are leaving double digits for good...

6292  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Bubble Burst A Good Thing? on: July 12, 2013, 10:21:17 AM
Does anyone else think the bursting of the "bitcoin bubble" (which is still deflating, I think) is a good thing? I don't believe bitcoins were designed to be a way to store wealth. And that is exactly what they were/what they were becoming. I think that their intrinsic value lies in their utility. I guess people en masse are starting to see that. Maybe now they can truly act as the kind of cryptocurrency the were designed to.

bitcoin has many faces. it is money for the digital age. as a payment method it is facing the same dilemma as any payment system: merchants will only "invest" in it (time, effort, programming, etc.) if enough people use it (and therefore need to know about it). but people will only start using it, when there are enough merchants within the game.
bitcoin is overcoming this obstacle kind of gracefully by showing its speculative face: bubbles and steep rises and downfalls create publicity. since it is decentralized, no company can put out millions for any mainstream marketing. the bitcoin chart is its marketing agent. the higher the price, the more people learn about it and want to participate. that is why bitcoin has been, is and will be rising.

if numbers get too large to be useful (price above 1 k $) there will be a switch to smaller increments, like mBTC.

6297  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: blockchain.info wallet hacking ??? on: July 11, 2013, 03:52:06 PM
Did you lose any bitcoins?
Maybe someone put the wrong username and tried to login in your wallet.

It does not matter at all.

no, i use 2F, so nothing got lost.
6298  Economy / Service Discussion / blockchain.info wallet hacking ??? on: July 11, 2013, 03:34:12 PM
that is so weird: today the mobile 2F authentification of my blockchain.info wallet sprung on. but i was not even online. i thought someone must have tried to access my account.

just a few minutes ago my brother called me and told me he has received an email from blockchain.info that someone has tried to access his account. (he uses youbikey, so nothing happened.

what is going on ?

6299  Economy / Speculation / Re: Simple reason for the price spike... why this weekend's dip will be deep on: July 11, 2013, 02:31:00 PM
The value of the USD dropped!

Let me tell you a story.
Once upon a time in bitcoin land we were sitting on the fence at around $79/BTC, a big $600k wall stood in between us and the 80s.. Then BOOM! Ben Bernanke drops the bomb, America ain't doing so well after all...

The USD plummets, shedding 2%. But nothings happened to our bitcoins, the fundamentals are still strong, they are still as intangible as ever..

So bitcoin is worth exactly the same, but the USD is not. In fact at the current prices for the USD, BTC should easily be worth $80.6.

Only one problem there's a massive $600k sell wall at 80.... Actually, that's not a problem at all... In fact it's great news!! A massive opportunity, that means I can buy coins at 60c under what should be the value...

Wooosh lets buy up those cheap coins!!

Speculator... "Woah what's going on here... somebody just bought straight through that wall... They must know something... BUY BUY BUY"

More speculators "BUY BUY BUY"

More speculators "BUY BUY BUY"

$90/BTC!!!

Where to from here?

Has this little event driven up the price of BTC for good? Or are we going to see a massive splashdown in this weekends dip?

My bet is the 90 wall is going to hold, and people will start pulling their coins once the big fish who are keyed in on this kind of thing do.

hm... bitcoin has risen versus all other currencies as well.
