6341  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [Idea] App for charity fundraising. on: June 11, 2012, 02:57:36 PM
Let's say you want to promote a cause with an event. Traditionally you have money pledged and then collect the money after the event. This requires some trust on behalf of the contributer that the money will get to its intended charity. With an app, a public key could be presented and a Bitcoin transaction can be seen in the app. The app itself would have a watch only wallet for the fundraiser, and would use a lite client for the transaction. This could even be used for pay-as-you-go chraity fundraising like doing household chores and stuff. Any thoughts?

Math is not science. Math is a descriptive language just like this language. There are no more perfectly straight lines real world than there are invisible pink unicorns. They only exist in the language of our imaginations. This is about philosophy. You can learn more about it by searching the term epistemology.

Mathematics is a science. It's not (only) a descriptive language. Math allows us to obtain true knowledge, not only talk about it. Ex: If two items of the same nature are put together with another two items of the same nature, you'll have four items of that nature (2+2=4). That's not a product of "imaginations", it's a true fact.
I threw you a bone. OK, so you claim math is a science. Fine. a^2 + b^2 = c^2 is a math theorem that is mathematically accurate to absolute precision. Now show me a perfect triangle anywhere in nature that can be measured and independently tested and verified to have perfectly straight lines and can be accurately measured at anytime to be be consistent of the theorem that a^2 + b^2 = c^2 exactly.

I'm absolutely ecstatic about the possibility of things working off of a close-proximity network. I don't however think that it will work for Bitcoin the way they're intending. Can't wait to see what can be come up with in the future!
It's good to be skeptical. I hope to be reading about this in your magazine one day when I buy it at the bookstore.
6344  Economy / Economics / Re: Ron Paul vs. Paul Krugman on: June 11, 2012, 12:38:58 PM
A theory requires empirical testing, otherwise it is a hypothesis.

You're basically calling mathematics entirely a "hypothesis". That's nonsense. Logical deduction on top of axioms can produce valid scientific theories, and in some situations this method is much more reliable than trying to conduct repeatable experiments with all the variables properly isolated (the "empirical" way). Social sciences are an example: experiments can't be repeated at will, and it's impossible to even distinguish all variables, let aside isolate them.
Math is not science. Math is a descriptive language just like this language. There are no more perfectly straight lines real world than there are invisible pink unicorns. They only exist in the language of our imaginations. This is about philosophy. You can learn more about it by searching the term epistemology.

All merchants and citizens must register their pre-existing addresses
FLAW DETECTED.

If somebody registers 20 addresses, how would anyone know that they didn't have another 300 addresses that they keep hidden?

Bitcoin is a form of cash and just as easy to hide as any other form of cash. Criminals often keep seperate sets of books with cash income. That's why there are audits.
6346  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox AML/KYC Process Explained on: June 11, 2012, 04:08:51 AM
I don't know what is happening with your verification system, but I was denied because you did not acknowledge a bill I uploaded. I uploaded another bill so I hope it gets approved soon. I have been doing business with mtgox regularly for over a year. All I want to do is make Dwolla deposits. Fortunately, Bitinstant is there, though it costs a lot in fees.
6347  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ideal community to introduce Bitcoin to? on: June 11, 2012, 01:58:58 AM
I mean, couldn't you just come right out and advertise that Bitcoin travelers are not limited to the amount of cash they carry? Wouldn't it be great if resorts would take Bitcoin?
6348  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Transactions chaining ( create/sign ) question on: June 11, 2012, 12:45:43 AM
A multisignature transaction taking funds from #1 and paying them to #4 that requires signatures from #1, #2, and #3 should accomplish the same thing, though.

Great idea, Gavin!

So when we will have facilities to spend multi signature transactions without having all of the keys in one wallet?

Can you estimate how much time will it take to develop this?
You have asked the $64,000 (literally) question. It will happen, have faith.
6349  Economy / Economics / Re: The Macroeconomics of Chinese kleptocracy on: June 10, 2012, 10:40:46 PM
Bitcoin really isn't a political statement. I don't really see why any government would oppose it except for tax evasion. Bitcoin is quite traceable with the proper tools, so that shouldn't be an issue. In fact, because it is very fraud resistant, governments wouldn't have to worry about someone claiming fraud for their bad behavior.
6350  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ideal community to introduce Bitcoin to? on: June 10, 2012, 10:30:10 PM
You may be onto something. The community doesn't have to be a geographical one. Find a market that would find Bitcoin useful. Your tourism example may find vendors anywhere and everywhere that that would accept Bitcoin denominated in local currency. Travel websites might be a good place to advertise the value of travelers using Bitcoin.

Ideology has never been a force for progress. Only technology drives society toward an improved quality of life. Ask yourself who has the best plan for improving and delivering technological invention and innovation for the future.

tasteless food, pollution, stupid games, abundant porn, more old people, more ways to kill, loss of privacy,  ... i fail to see anything good that tech brought us
And what's ahead: nukes in every country, GMed viruses, rich people living to 300 years and AI that will make all of us redundant.
And don't forget forum trolls.  Grin

Ah, well.  Time carries on.  Whether by ideology or simple demographics, the concepts of liberty will once again dominate in the Republican Party.  It is simply inevitable now.
Perhaps. There are far too many parallels between the events of the last few years and the situation in the USSR circa 1980 for me to be certain that the current political system will still exist in 2016.

I think you forget that the USSR's biggest problem was that people could see they were poorer than necessary just by looking at television and seeing how we lived.  No matter how bad things get in the US economy, there isn't actually a better model that people can see right now.  Chances are, the system will outlive all of us.
Ideology has never been a force for progress. Only technology drives society toward an improved quality of life. Ask yourself who has the best plan for improving and delivering technological invention and innovation for the future.

This thing is so revolutionary, it needs a whole new way to carry it around. It needs to be worn openly, but still be accessible. Maybe pinned onto a pocket or lapel. Maybe dangling from a lanyard or blinged out on a gold chain. Maybe like a pocket watch. It's just to cool to carry in your pocket unless you want to hide it.

Jeez, you guys are really criticizing this pre-announcement. You haven't even given the "backers" a chance to postpone the actual announcement.

6357  Economy / Economics / Re: Ron Paul vs. Paul Krugman on: June 09, 2012, 03:15:58 PM
A theory requires empirical testing, otherwise it is a hypothesis. An axiom is a generally accepted definition, but in this case I and many others do not accept it. Therefore you are making logical fallacies starting with begging the question. You cannot call this science until it is testable and verifiable. It is pseudoscience until then.
6358  Economy / Economics / Re: Billionaires hate Bitcoin. on: June 09, 2012, 03:10:33 PM
Billionaries are going to hate bitcoin, since it is impossible to own billion bitcoins  Grin

Lol yeah.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be honest, I don't think they hate bitcoin because they probably don't know about them Tongue
Then before long they will be Zimbabwe Bazillionaires!
6359  Economy / Economics / Re: Ron Paul vs. Paul Krugman on: June 09, 2012, 02:45:34 PM
Can you provide an example of a specifically Austrian Economic axiom and how it can be used in science?
The main one is the axiom of human action, in that humans use means to achieve ends. As an example of use, it can be explain why barter occurs: if person A possesses a good X, person B possesses a good Y, A values the possession of Y more than X, and B values the possession of X more then Y, they perform an exchange (I'm ignoring transaction costs and the existence of other people and goods for simplicity).
OK, I'm with you so far. Your example has formed an hypothesis from your axiom. Science makes use of these tools by making predictions. Now we need to make a prediction based on this hypothesis that "humans use means to achieve ends." If we go with your example:
"if person A possesses a good X, person B possesses a good Y, A values the possession of Y more than X, and B values the possession of X more then Y, they perform an exchange (I'm ignoring transaction costs and the existence of other people and goods for simplicity)."
Now design an experiment that can test this hypothesis. And you'll need to test its falsifiability.
6360  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The death of Occupy on: June 09, 2012, 02:20:02 PM
It might only subjugate the poor because it cant be taxed and therefore cant fund social welfare programs.
I was thinking more along the lines that it can't be printed by a government to fund social welfare programs. I do think Bitcoin was created with egalitarian intentions, but those won't be fully realized until the current social-monetary power structure finally erodes into more evenly balanced economic system. Er.. I mean, the Evil Empire will be overthrown.
